Our goals included securing student teaching placements, assessing the need for teacher professional development, and study exchange with universities in Peru. We toured five IHM elementary and secondary schools and a professional school. At each school we were greeted by teachers and students who treated us to various cultural events including dancing, blessings, and singing. The IHM Sisters stationed in Peru were gracious, charming, and warm, guiding us all the way. Along with 12 IU undergraduates there on a mission trip we toured historic Lima, attended mass at the Lima Cathedral, met the cardinal, ate great local cuisine, and attended a fantastic professional dance show. Our first school was Villa María, Miraflores where we experienced how deeply the Peruvian culture is revered and how well the children speak English. Immaculata Goes to Peru! by Melissa Reed, Ed.D.

On May 17th, Sister Ann Heath, Vice President for Academic Affairs, and Dr. Melissa Reed, Division Chair of Education, left for Lima, Peru on the first leg of a South American journey. Our goals included securing student teaching placements, assessing the

need for teacher professional development, and study exchange with universities in Peru. We toured five IHM elementary and secondary schools and a professional school. At each school we were greeted by teachers and students who treated us to various cultural events including dancing, blessings, and singing. Our first school was Villa María, Miraflores where we experienced how deeply the Peruvian culture is revered

and how well the children speak English. We were thrilled by the students display of dances and songs with commentary to welcome us and show the grandeur of their culture.

Next we visited Escuela Imaculado Corazón, the boys school K-5, and were amazed with many aspects of the children’s education. The expansive grounds of Villa María, LaPlanicie host the 6-11 grade students as well as the Escuelita K-6. National Test Center Certi-fication through the NCTA shows out-side testing entities that a test center operates under the highest accepted standards and procedures for all types of testing.

Peru (Continued from page 1)

After eight wonderful days in Peru, we headed to our next stop Santiago, Chile, where we visited Villa María Academy Santiago. At Villa María we observed the students, and were treated to the local dances and songs. We both agreed to maintain the IHM connection to Villa María Academy Santiago. The students of VMA Chile enjoy a rich ex-perience of learning English, culture, academic subjects, debate, and athlet-ics within the beautiful setting of the school. The school is undergoing a complete renovation to upgrade its fa-cilities, its theatre, music facilities, labs while the little early childhood center provides a sweet environment for children to grow and learn with a total immersion in English. A scheduled visit to the premier Catholic University in Santiago to discuss study abroad op-portunities included an unplanned riot of secondary and college level students protesting education in Chile.

Apparently riots in Chile are common-place and people just proceeded as normal coughing off the after effects of tear gas. We were safe and what I remember vividly is a

peaceful prayer service being held in a center courtyard amidst all the chaos.

We are confident that our journeys to Peru and Chile will lead to opportuni-ties not only for the Education Division but for our other disciplines as well. The majority of students and teachers were English speakers. The schools in Chile and Peru recognize the need for English fluency. The Education Division will be inviting students to conduct 50% of their student teaching and/or obser-vations in South America as of May 2017. There are many other exciting prospects for South America in the plan-ning phases right now so look for more to come.

We are pleased that this initiative has been blessed as we learned recently that Immaculata University received two grants for nearly $250,000 from the US Department of Education. The un-dergraduate international studies and foreign language (UISFL) program grant and the Fulbright-Hays Group Project Abroad grant will fund course develop-ment, travel, and training for faculty and students (Peru student teaching, Peru Spanish course, service-learning locally, instruction for Peruvian student teacher supervisors) and resources to support these courses (i.e. Rosetta Stone).

If you have any questions about our trip or are interested in learning more about service to Peru or Chile, do not hesitate to contact one of us.
