Often overshadowed by the hustle and bustle of nearby Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni, meaning “place of peace” in Xitsonga, offers residents and visitors a host of exciting things to do by day and by night – whether you’re a nature lover, history buff, shopaholic, clubber or gambler.

The Ekurhuleni metropolitan includes the towns of Alberton, Benoni, Boksburg, Brakpan, Edenvale, Germiston, Springs, Kempton Park and Nigel, each with its own character and hot spots. Here’s a list of things you could do in Ekurhuleni over a 24-hour period:

DURING THE DAy

Start your day with a bit of history and reflection at the Thokoza Memorial Wall in Khumalo Street, Thokoza. The wall was unveiled by former president Thabo Mbeki to recognise and honour the lives lost in the township during the unrest that took place in the region around the time of South Africa’s first democratic elections in 1994.

If you’re more of a nature fan, sharpen your bird-watching skills with a trip to Korsman Bird Sanctuary in Benoni. The sanctuary, which was declared in 1967, sits on a small pan with open water and contains more than 70 species of birds, including great crested grebes, grey herons, white-breasted cormorants and fulvous ducks.

Then indulge in a spot of retail therapy and

spoil yourself with a few gifts from one of the East Rand Mall’s 180 shops. Located only 7km from South Africa’s busiest airport, OR Tambo International, the mall is home to all the major chain stores and boasts an array of coffee shops and restaurants to satisfy even the most ravenous shopper. There is also a multi-theatre cinema complex where you can watch the latest movies on the big screen.

Not into conventional shopping malls? Right across the road from the mall is the East Rand Flea Market, where you can pick up a selection of proudly South African goods ranging from African art and jewellery to home industry products that are sure to make memorable gifts for you or for loved ones.

As evening approaches, treat your family or friends to a sunset picnic at Germiston Lake and enjoy spectacular views of green rolling lawns and calming still waters.

AT NIGHT

The East Rand has a host of top-class dining and clubbing experiences for the discerning visitor. If you’re looking for a real party, visit Nicci Beach – a hot nightclub overlooking the Wild Waters water park. Amid blue pools and swaying palm trees you can enjoy light meals and cocktails while South Arica’s top DJs get you moving and shaking on the dance floor.

An exciting way of posing a question at the conferenceDOESNT MATTER WHICH PHONE YOU USE. SIMPLY DIAL 49 004, TEXT YOUR QUESTION AND SEND.As part of the drive to improve our services every year, IMFO will once again continue to use the sms system for communication during conference sessions. IMFO is doing away with the roaming microphones and writing questions on paper during sessions. Delegates will send a text message with their questions to a 5 digit number. The Chairperson will access all the questions and facilitate the answers to the questions as they appear on screen. Before sending a text, please check the session Code which you wish your question to be posed. refer to conference programme. Each session has its own code!

In short, the procedure will be:stEP1: SMS S1/S4 (Your question) sent text to 49 004stEP2: You (the sender) will receive a SMS acknowledging receipt of your questionstEP3: Listen out to hear the chairperson raise your question to the speaker
