Trek donates $10 per mountain bike sale (over $1,000 retail) to IMBA’s trail initiatives. Over the course of our three-year partnership, Trek has made a $600,000 commitment to create singletrack trails, bike parks and other mountain bike facilities.

TREK RETAILER BRINGS NEW TRAILS TO OMAHA

Kent McNeill (see photo) likes to see people enjoying close-to-home trails. The co-founder of High Gear Bicycle Store and the Trek Store of Omaha, Nebraska, is making this vision a reality in the hub of the Midwest cycling community. McNeill serves as president of local IMBA-affiliated advocacy group Trails Have Our Respect (THOR). Forming a coalition that includes the Omaha Parks Department, Activate Omaha and the National Park Service, THOR helped build Adam’s Park Trail in one of the city’s roughest neighborhoods.

“Funding for the trail project comes from IMBA’s Trailbuilding Fund, combined with local and national grants — though the majority of the trails’ cost will be borne through sweat equity,” said McNeill. Phase 1 of the build was completed this June.

The health benefits of close-to-home recreation helped a key partner, Activate Omaha, attract a $360,000 grant from the Robert Woods Johnson Foundation to improve physical activity and nutrition. The facilities at Adams Park will be, “inviting for all kinds of riders on all kinds of bikes,” said Tammie Dodge, project manager for Activate Omaha. “Our hope is that once riders develop their biking skills the park, they’ll have the confidence to bike outside its borders.”

“It’s exciting to see the Trek Store and IMBA club at the crux of an organized community-wide effort to attract support for urban trails in Omaha.” said Rich Cook, IMBA development director. “This project sets a national example for healthy communities.”

This spring, IMBA launched the Public Lands Initiative (PLI) with the goal of increasing mountain bike access across the United States. The

announcement was made in dramatic fashion during the Bicycle Leadership Conference, as bike industry captains John Burke and Mike Sinyard joined Bikes Belong’s Tim Blumenthal onstage to voice their support. All three pledged $100,000 to help launch the program.

“This gets us about halfway to funding the first two years of this very important work,” Sinyard told the crowd, which included representatives from many of the world’s largest

bike companies. Burke added, “I think the people in this room can double that figure —not in a year, not in a month, but right now.”

What happened next was truly remarkable. “From that moment, industry leaders began stepping forward with incredibly generous pledges,” said Mike Van Abel, IMBA’s executive director. “Some of them, like SRAM’s Stan Day, pushed the energy in the room even higher by immediately voicing support — to the tune of $100,000 in SRAM’s

case! The outpouring continued throughout the day, and

it’s still ongoing.”IMBA

will tackle nearly two-dozen priority PLI campaigns in 2010. They will serve as models, providing templates and protocols for the benefit of IMBA clubs and advocates across the country.

BURKE’S SPEECH INSPIRES PEARL IZUMI TO HOST PLI EVENT

The speech made by Trek’s John Burke’s at the Bicycle Leader-ship Conference so inspired Pearl Izumi’s National Sales Manager Todd Grant that he offered to host a PLI event at their Broomfield, Colorado, headquarters to help promote bicycle-friendly land protection. Colorado Congressman Jared Polis (D-Boulder) is crafting a large Wilderness bill that would affect the important mountain bike destinations of Breckenridge, Vail, Carbondale and Copper Mountain, total-ing roughly 300,000 acres of Wilderness in Summit, Eagle and Pitkin counties. Ninety busi-ness owners and members of the bike industry joined Grant in welcoming the congressman and urging him to keep trails open and protecting the land. IMBA presented Congressman Polis with a letter supporting appro-priate Wilderness, supplement-ed by bike-friendly companion designations that would protect even more land, while allowing for mountain biking.
