Welcome to Imagination: Traditionalist
Imagination Style shows how to pair imaginative, inspired design with a specific
digital scrapbook style and the techniques to make it happen.
For this Imagination Style lesson, we’re playing with the juggernaut style of
Traditionalist, what I like to call the “OG” of scrapbooking. Traditionalist pages rely on
superb photo arrangement, established themes, integrated layering and fun title work
to stand out.
We’ll explore the following techniques:
• Explore the main characteristics of traditionalist style design
• Review inspiring scrapbook art and pull out design elements to use on our
layout
• Choose one of the 4 main photo arrangement styles: grid, scattered, big
photo/little photo or storyboard as the base of our design
• Use patterns, colors and decorations that support the theme of the design
• Learn the difference between relaxed and elaborate traditionalist design
• Highlight tidbits shared from other traditionalist scrapbookers
Let’s get started!

Introduction: Probing Questions
Each month, before we jump into our photo-editors and create our project, I’ll share
the images and the reasoning for what sparked my imagination for the Imagination
Style lesson and our upcoming project lesson. Let’s take a look at the second board:
IS: Traditionalist on Pinterest.
As we dive into each image, think about how the image could inspire your scrapbook
design. Here are a couple of probing questions you can ask yourself whilst looking at
each image:
1. Design: What’s the base shape of the design? What can you identify as the
foundation of the design that moves your eye around the page?
2. Photos: How are the photos added to the design? Are the photos in black and
white or color? Are the photos shaped or manipulated in any way and if so how?
3. Color: How is color used on the page? Is there a color story? Neutrals? Accents?
4. Type: How is text used on the page? As information or as a design element?
5. Decoration: Is the image decorated in some way that could be interpreted as
embellishing and if so how?
Probing questions move you past viewing a cool image to evaluating an image. You
begin carefully considering all parts of an image and dissecting those parts so you
can pull out what you need to inspire some part of your own scrapbook page.

The Lesson: From Start to Finish
Traditionalist pages are, probably, the easiest scrapbook pages for us to build simply
because they capture the art of combining words with photos AND digital
scrapbooking was born from traditional page design.

a. First Steps
i. Create a new empty workspace. Go to File > New: 12 x 12 inches (or
your preferred size), 300 PPI, white background. Click OK.
b. Arrange the Photos to Create the Design Base
i. Add your photos. Open your photos and add them to the workspace.
Consider using one of the four Traditionalist placement strategies: grid,
big photo/little photo, scattered, or storyboard.
c. Strategize Placement for Title and Journaling
i. Leave room for an embellished title. Within the arrangement of the
photos, give yourself enough space to add an elaborate, decorated title
before developing the rest of the layout.
d. Decorate the Page
i. Add embellishments. Begin by using element clusters that fill empty
space within the layout or frame a nearby photo.
ii. Use a visual triangle. Consider using color and repetition to create a
visual triangle — three points around the page that help the eye jump
from point to point.
iii. Select the right tool. Select the Magic Wand tool in the Tools panel.
iv. Consider a relaxed or detailed embellishment style. Decorate your page
according to whats feels right to you. Don’t add elements because you
think it will look more traditional.
v. Fill-in gaps using layering. Try to add objects below your photos and
above your photos to imply the layout has depth.

over 100px. Type the title word.
2. Duplicate the word using shortcut keys CMD/CTRL J. Reduce the Fill
Opacity to 0%.

Add a 7 px Stroke; Center. Click OK.

5. Navigate to Window > Styles and load the Champions Metal Styles.
6. Apply the Metal: Gold 6 style to the stroked text. Adjust the Drop
