B: Well, I don’t know…

A: Have a look, this bracelet is very beautiful, and the design is original.

B: Well, no, it’s too big, I think…. Could you show me these earrings?

A: Yes, of course. Look, they are modern and the stones are beautiful.

4. What flowers were bought?

N: Hello! I need your advice.

A: Yes, please.

N: I need a very beautiful bunch of flowers for my mum’s jubilee.

A: What flowers does she like?

N: Unfortunately, I don’t know. What flowers are the most beautiful?

A: Look, they are all very beautiful. What is your mum’s favorite color?

N: It’s hard to say… Well, let’s choose pink and white roses.

A: Would you like a big bunch or a small one?

N: I’d like a big one decorated with pink and white ribbons.

A: How do you like this one?

N: Oh, it’s wonderful! I’ll take it.

Tips on how to choose a gift:

  Know the person’s interests / hobbies / needs / tastes . . .  Know the person’s favorite color/perfume/clothing style/ singer . . .

Talk to his/her other friends or parents, siblings. Or ask him/her

indirectly. Ask what is the best gift that he/she has ever received or the

worst.

Take someone along with you. While you are shopping for the gift take

someone along with you if you want. If the person is a common friend then

it’s even better. As he/she will be able to help you make a choice. Because

at times we tend to get confused in the gift shop because of so many

choices.

Wrap it. The wrapping does count. If you wrap it up with newspapers, that

doesn't seem too attractive. Tie it up with a ribbon, use some

stickers, glitters, write a nice and sweet message in calligraphic

handwriting if the space permits and that'll be perfect.

Fae: Help! I still need to buy a gift for my mother and I can’t seem to think of the

perfect present, something that’ll really knock her socks off .

Pablo: Why don’t you just get her a gift certificate or a gift card? That way, she

can pick out her own gift.

Fae: Oh, she would hate that. She would think that I didn’t put any thought

into buying her a present at all, while I’ve been racking my brain to think of

something she’ll like. Maybe I should buy her a car!

Pablo: Now, don’t get carried away. You get like this every year. I know you want to

please your mother, but remember, it’s the thought that counts.

Fae: I wish that were true. If I get her the wrong gift, I’m afraid she’ll

be disappointed, or worse, she’ll hold it against me for the rest of my life.

Pablo: It boggles my mind how you can work yourself up like this every year.

Fae: How can I not? You know my mother.

Pablo: Yes, I do, and I have one piece of advice for you: Buy her a gift she

can return.

3/ READING:

People often receive unwanted gifts for their birthday. The truth is many

people want either money or a simple present such as flowers or a kiss

not things they already have. I know about this subject because an

experience made me realize of what people want.

Last Monday was my Aunt's birthday. We had a party and the critical

moment was the one in which we had to give her the presents. I hadbought a bag for her but, unfortunately, she did not like it. Perhaps

Page 7: ILC Intermediaire Lesson 8 Gift

because she has three or four bags and does not need anymore. I realized

these kinds of gifts are not wanted.

Money is probably the best gift that can be given. I usually ask for money

for my birthdays because I often save money to buy expensive thingssuch as a camera which hardly is bought for birthday. I am planning to

buy my own television for my bedroom that is an example of why I like

receiving money as a gift.

The last option is simple presents such as flowers or a kiss. You might say

people do not like them because those things do not have any value but I

can assure sometimes people around you prefer simple presents instead

of material expensive things. Have you ever kissed your girlfriend after

you have not seen her for a long time? It is a wonderful moment andcannot be compared with a watch, for example.

My conclusion is that sometimes it is better to give someone a hug, a kiss

or a simple present instead of expensive stuff which could not be useful.

Do you agree with the writer? Explain why?

4/ WRITING: Writing Cards

Here are ten messages from ‘cards’:

1.  Get well soon. We all really miss you here in the office!2.  Merry Christmas and Happy New year to you and your family.

3.  I just wanted to send you a card to say thank you for all your help.

4.  Have a really good Christmas and New Year. Have a good break!

5.  Congratulations on the new addition to your family. Thinking ofyou.

6.  I love you my darling and want to spend the rest of my life with

you.

7.  Many happy returns. Have a great day and don’t drink too much!

8.  I’m really sorry for what happened. I hope we can put it behind usand be friends again.

9.  Happy anniversary. I can’t believe it has been forty years. I still

love you as much as I did when we met.

Do you know this Howard Johnson song titled "M-O-T-H-E-R (A Word That Means

the World to Me)?"

'M' is for the million things she gave me,

'O' means only that she's growing old,

'T' is for the tears were shed to save me,

'H' is for her heart of purest gold;

'E' is for her eyes, with love-light shining,

'R' means right, and right she'll always be,

Put them all together, they spell MOTHER,

A word that means the world to me!

What does your mother mean to you?

A girlfriend or boyfriend

A teacher at Christmas

A lady who’s just given birth

A sick secretaryA friend on his birthday.

A nurse

Anyone at Christmas

A person who had an argument

Someone who has been married for a long time

Write a gift letter to your mother for Mother’s Day (follow the

instructions and sample letter below):

Instructions

Visit a bookstore or greeting card shop and select a card. Choose a thematic card(humor, poem, message of love), or a blank card.

Begin with a simple expression of gratitude for your mother's presence in yourlife. You can say, "Mom, I am so happy that you are in my life and I appreciateeverything you do." This sets the tone for the card in a strong, personal way.

Express specifically what makes your mother special. Remind her of somethingshe has done for you recently or during the past year, or recall kindness sheshowed to someone you know. Your goal is to find a quality or characteristic in

your mother that you can express to demonstrate what she means to you.

4 Conclude by wishing her a great day. If you don't live near her, you can write, "I

wish I was there celebrating with you mom, I really miss you." Reiterate your loveand gratitude. Examples include: "Thank you for always seeing the best in me," or"I know I can always count on you to be there for me," so the card ends on astrong note of affirmation.

Dear Mom,

Without you, I wouldn't be here, there would be no ME to bother you for everything

and breakfast. I may not be your little baby anymore, I've changed, I've grown, but

loving you hasn't. I love you to pieces!

Today on Mother's Day I want to tell you that I love you and I mean it with all my

heart. You are the most important person in my life!

Love,

Sam
