Sharma, C. & Paramati, S. R. (2018). Measuring Inequality of Opportunity for the Backward Communities: Regional Evidence from the Indian Labour Market. Social Indicators Research, 138 (2), pp. 479-503. https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11205-017-1676-3

Abstract: The affirmative action policy for socially and economically backward communities in employment has been a debated issue in India. In this context, this paper aims to analyze the level of inequality by distinguishing between ‘circumstance’ and ‘effort’ factors in the Roemer’s framework on equality of opportunity. We measure inequality of opportunities due to two circumstances: caste and religion. Our empirical analysis, at state-level, utilizes a recent household survey data, which provides information related to efforts as well as circumstances of workers. The paper estimated inequality in the labour market and then decomposed it to know the circumstances that cause income inequality. Our estimates indicated that inequality and inequality of opportunity is substantially higher in India. Specifically, the outcome of our analysis evidently indicated that the socially backward communities do have economically disadvantageous position in some of the Indian states. However, the degree of circumstances based on inequality varies to a great extent among the states. Therefore, we suggest that the country does not need a nation-level affirmative action policy instead a state-level policy could be more appropriate as the intensity of the problem differ significantly among the Indian states. Biswas, I, Raj, Alok and Srivastava, Samir K. (2018) Supply chain channel coordination with triple

bottom line approach, Transportation Research Part E, 115, pp. 213 - 226.

Abstract: In this paper, we explore coordination of a sustainable risk-neutral supply chain that faces greening effort dependent demand. We propose a framework for exclusive distribution of sustainability responsibilities in a decentralised setting. We classify decentralised supply chain according to distribution of responsibilities for greening and social efforts. Our study demonstrates that greening and social responsiveness indices simultaneously influence all optimal parameters of a supply chain. We analyse generalised wholesale price and linear two-part tariff contracts for dyadic supply chains with triple bottom line objective. We demonstrate that a decentralised supply chain can be coordinated when the supplier is socially responsible. Mehra, P. (2018) Does consultation time influence patient perception of provider communication style, patient satisfaction, and word of mouth recommendation in India? A mediation analysis. Asia Pacific Journal of Health Management, 13 (1), 38-48. Abstract: In medically underserved developing countries such as India, the length of the consultation is often compromised; providers, it appears, have lost their natural empathetic tendencies and try to substitute talk with techniques and procedures. Despite this, surprisingly, patient satisfaction is high in India. This raises questions on the importance of understanding how patients feel about the clinical consultation length and the manner in which it affects their satisfaction. In this context, this study analysed if the time spent with the patient predicted different changes to patient satisfaction with the provider and word of mouth recommendation. This cross sectional study comprised a sample of working Indian adults (N=501), completing communicative competence measures and indicating their overall satisfaction and word of mouth recommendation potential. The four step Baron and Kenny’s model of mediation analysis, apart from the GLM and factor analysis, was used for the analysis. Findings showed that the communication style of the providers positively influenced the health outcomes such as patient satisfaction and word of mouth recommendation, and the length of direct consultation time mediated this relationship. Gender wise, male patients were more likely to complain about poor communicative competence of the providers and less consultation time than female patients.

It is concluded that patients positively associate a longer clinical consultation time with empathetic and communicatively competent providers and were willing to recommend him/her to others. However due to extreme paucity of qualified providers in India, patients generally ignore, overlook, or suffer problems related to consultation time or communication style of the providers. https://www.achsm.org.au/Public/Resources/Journal/Current%20Issue.aspx

Premchandran, R and Priyadarshi, P (2018). Validation of the Flourishing Scale for Married Employees

in the Information Technology-Enabled Services Sector in India, Journal of Well-Being Assessment , 2 (1),

pp. 75-89.

Abstract: The Flourishing Scale (FS) created by Diener et al., Social Indicators Research, 97, 143–156 (2010) is a measurement that assesses eudaimonic well-being in terms of psychological functioning. In this study, the psychometric properties of the scale were explored by using three Indian samples (I: n = 262; II: n = 347; III: n = 508) each comprising of married individuals belonging to the Information Technology/Information Technology Enabled Services (IT/ITES) sector. Reliability analysis and a multigroup confirmatory factorial analysis (MGCFA) were carried out on the FS, and the validity was examined by analysing their correlations with other measures of well-being. Results showed adequate psychometric properties for the scale, and convergent validity with subjective well-being measures. Results also demonstrated the unidimensional structure of the FS corroborating earlier findings. The MGCFA of the scale evidenced an invariant structure. In conclusion, the FS behaved consistently with the original study by Diener et al. and was found to be appropriate for use in assessing eudaimonic well -being among service sector employees in India. Further, due to its short length, the survey may be leveraged to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions of well-being programs by HR practitioners and may also be used in future studies on well-being.

Venkataramanaiah, S. Coordination and Collaboration Challenges: Insights from a Patient Survey on

emergency care delivery. July 21-22, 2018, Institute of Medical Sciences, BHU, Varanasi. Emergency Medicine

India

Abstract: Healthcare delivery in resource constrained environment is a big challenge for both healthcare professionals and policy makers. This is mainly due to higher levels of interdependencies among healthcare providers. Of late, healthcare professionals are adopting the management science approaches for improving quality, efficiency and timely delivery of delivery of care at low cost. This mainly includes supply chain management approaches which is built based on theory of coordination and collaboration with suitable incentives. In developing countries where resources are scarce such coordination failures can have potentially severe impact on patient health. However, there is limited understanding about how coordination takes place across and within the different healthcare service providers and how this influence emergency care delivery. This presentation focuses on coordination and collaboration challenges in trauma care delivery in India using a patient survey. The findings suggest mechanisms to better integrate the processes in the care delivery which include setting-up referral processes, ambulance services, using third party coordinators and process improvement within the hospital following lean principles and suggestions for policy making are also highlighted.
