Our containers spend their lives in harsh and sometimes dangerous environments. When leaving our production, the contai-ners are all shiny, clean, and have no trace of neither wear nor tear. To keep this state maintained throughout multiple years at seas would be unrealistic.

Wear and tear can be described as ine-vitably damage that naturally occurs as a result of normal wear and aging. Wear and tear is a form of depreciation which is assumed to occur even when an item is used competently and with care and proper maintenance.

The container is designed to protect the inflatable liferaft against UV rays and sea-water, but still to allow condensation water to exit the container and therefore not 100% watertight. Inside the container the liferaft is wrapped in either plastic or aluminum pack-ing bags, so unless the container has open holes the liferaft is still well protected until the next annual service.

Smaller cracks or scratches in the surface (gelcoat) are not putting the functionality nor the lifetime of the liferaft at risk. These smaller cracks or scratches can occur during transportation and handling onboard and they will be repaired at the next annual service. All service stations and service technicians are trained and equip-ped to repair the containers, even if it is larger damages.

Still, we need to ensure that the containers returned to our customers possess a certain level of standard. Most ship owners, class, port and flag surveyors are viewing the appearance of the container as an indicator of the quality of service.

The VIKING service kit contains new labels and container closing bands to ensure thatall labelling are renewed at each service, as well as the container closing bands.

Unfortunately, from time to time, we still receive customer complaints deriving from container not cleaned or repaired to a satis-factorily level. This is very disturbing to our reputation and customer satisfaction and should of course be avoided.

By following these guidelines, technicians will always be sure to comply with VIKING’s container cleaning and repairing standards, and hence avoid any cases of customer dissatisfaction and complaints from container issues.

Service stations using the VIKING iPad electronical check list should take pictures of the container after service is completed to document conditions in case of transportation damages.

Finally please note that best practice is to keep a smaller quantity of containers in good conditions from condemned liferafts in stock to replace heavily damaged or misco-lored containers on older liferafts still in good conditions.
