–Igneous rock are classified according to their textures and compositions.

Igneous rocks are formed either underground or above ground.

  Underground, they are formed when magma deep within the earth becomes trapped in small pockets.

Compositions

This type of Igneous rock is called intrusive. It is also known as plutonic rock and is classified according to its size, shape, and position relative to the surrounding rock. Ex. Granite is this type of rock.

Igneous rocks are also formed when volcanoes erupt and lava is on the Earth’s surface.

• This type of Igneous rock is called extrusive. It is also known as volcanic rock because it is brought to the surface by volcanoes.

• Basalt and Dacite is an example of this type of rock.

Textures• Have 4 basic textures:

–a.Glassy-shiny and look like glass. The materials that make up this rock are not organized crystals.

–b. Fine-grained- made of interlocking mineral crystals.

–c. Coarse-grained- consist of interlocking mineral crystals which are all about the same size.

–d. Porphyritic rock-large crystals scattered on a background of much smaller crystals.
