SYNOPSIS

The longitudinal, acoustically dense personal documentary describes the difficult period of

recovery after a serious brain injury. There are two narrators: ten-year-old Václav, whom we

hear before and after the injury, when he slowly, with difficulty, but with invincible optimismdescribes his injury as well as his life in the sanatorium. His mother Andrea, who

accompanied him through the difficult times and during short interludes in the difficult

recovery period recorded coverage from the children’s pavilion as well as interviews with

parents of other ill children. The documentary records the unique environment of the Hamza

Specialist Sanatorium in Luže, which has a unique history and a remarkable founder from the

start of the 20th

century Dr. František Hamza. Andrea’s diary entries are addressed to him

and she turns to him as to a spiritual guide during the difficult period of her son’s treatment.

With curiosity she also takes out her microphone in various moments of curative therapies,

she captures leisure time of wheelchair-bound children and she tries to meditate on whatstrange life situation destiny has set out for her and Václav. “Don’t give up, really don’t!”

says fourteen-year-old Tereza with a lifelong handicap of cerebral palsy at the end and this

exclamation is also the strongest message of the documentary.

THE EXCERPT

The excerpt includes the majority of the programme from the start to the 25th minute. The

final part includes information about the results of Václav’s long-term rehabilitation and the

stories of child patients the listener became acquainted with during listening to the

programme.

The sequence has been selected to represent all elements present in the programme and to

make sense when put together (the accompanying text of Václav + Andrea, Andrea’s diary

entries, reportage sequences, music score, interviews with therapists, patients’

observations. The documentary consists of two larger stories – the 14-year-old Tereza with a

life-long palsy and the six-year-old Arab kid Faris, who is on treatment in the Czech Republic

accompanied by his father. He naturally represents the fact that Arabs hold the Czech

rehabilitation school in high esteem and come to be treated here with full respect to the

rules of the Czech Republic. So the current topic of cooperation with Arab countries comesup unexpectedly in the documentary through the fact that if a child is ill, the parent is always

in a difficult position and will do anything to save him or her, whether they are a Czech, Arab

or Syrian child.

Andrea has been working freelance for Czech Radio since 1992. She makes documentaries

on the topic of handicapped people, she also works with issues related to education and

child development. She teaches radio and theatre theory at the Palacký University in

Olomouc where she also supervises the UP AIR student radio station. She is an editor of theRadioDock webpage on Czech radio events. Together with her son Václav she is currently

preparing a school theatre performance Plauta and another radio documentary entitled Fast

and Slow. Together with her husband and three children she keeps bees.

návrat do téměř normálního života.

Stalo se mi to, že jsem šel ke kamarádovi a srazilo mě auto.

Před úrazem jsem byl normální chlapec, který chodil do školy, měl celkem dobré známky a

tak, dobré kamarády.

Několik týdnů si vůbec nepamatuju, ale mám na tu dobu vzpomínku, na krku mám jizvu po

tracheotomii.

Nejdřív jsem byl v Brně na ARU, potom mě převezli do Ostravy, do hyperbarické komory,

abych se probral z komatu. A pak mě převezli do léčebny v Luži Košumberk.

You’ve been in a coma for five days, Vašík. I ask – How can we tell when you start wakingup?

The doctors call it Glasgow Coma Scale. You should be opening your eyes, reacting to stimuli,

speaking, following instructions. None of that is happening. But you can swallow, and that’s

supposed to be good.

Not much is known yet about brain damage. The prognosis ranges from vegetative and

immobile to a return to an almost normal life.

What happened to me was that I was going to my friend’s house and a car ran over me.

Before the injury I was a normal boy who went to school, had quite good marks and also

good friends.

I don’t remember several weeks at all, but I have one souvenir from that time, a scar on my

neck after tracheostomy.

At first I was at the ICU in Brno, then they transferred me to Ostrava to a hyperbaric

chamber. Then they moved me to the sanatorium in Luže - Košumberk.

Na hřišti vedle pavilonu M hrajeme petangue. Lukáš se vždycky rozmachuje, takže se vykloní

z vozíku. Terka má berle a háže taky. Ondra má perthes a petangue hraje celkem obstojně.

Měří nám to Terezčin tatínek. Je to profesionální hasič.

ANDREA

Takhle jsi to myslel, Františku?

I pomyslil jsem, aby trvale a konečně byl vybudován na rozkošné prostorné náhorní rovině

sousední obce košumberské, mezi zříceninami hradu Košumberka a mariánským chrámem

na Chlumku, nový ústav. Léčebný domov v domácí vlasti, ve volném čistém ovzduší,

v záplavě sluneční, který by nebyl zámkem vyvolených, ale mohl by sloužit každému dítěti

individuelně a přece bez všelikého majetkového třídění.

Jsme tady teprve pátý den, Vašíku. Sotva jsme se rozkoukali a už cítím, že se léčíme. Ty i já.

Ty na vozíku, s podepřenou hlavou, beze slov, krmený, obsluhovaný ze všech stran, já …

prostě přítomná a nápomocná, jak nejlíp umím.

The M Pavilion is a magical place really, because it’s for children from around the country,

wherever they come from.

VÁCLAV

We play pétangue on the M Pavilion playground. Lukáš swings his arm and leans out of his

wheelchair. Terka has crutches and throws too. Ondra has perthes disease and he can play

pétangue quite well. Tereza’s dad does the measuring. He’s a professional fire-fighter.

ANDREA

Is this what you had in mind, František?

It came to my mind that on the wonderful spacious plateau of the neighbouring village of

Košumberk, between the ruins of the Košumberk Castle and the Virgin Mary temple in

Chlumek, a new sanatorium should finally and permanently be built. A curative home in our

homeland, in open, clean air, in the flood of sunshine which would not be a chateau for the

chosen few but could serve every child individually and yet regardless of wealth.

CHAPTER SANATORIUM INTRODUCTION

ANDREA

We’ve only been here for five days, Václav. We’ve just found our bearings and I can already

feel we are healing. Both of us. You on a wheelchair, with your head supported, without any

words, fed, assisted on all fronts, and I... simply present and helping as much as I can.

TERAPEUTKA

Tak teď nám přivezli dítě, který leží, nekomunikuje. Nejdřív ho musíme naučit jíst, to je

základ. Teď si musí umět říct na záchod. Pak se musí naučit sedět a to všechno je velmi

dlouhá terapie, někdy to jde rychleji, někdy pomalu a někdy to bohužel končí v nějaké

vývojové fázi, kde to dál nejde. Ale pokud to jde, tak sláva, postavíme dítě na nohy, aby

následky úrazu byly co nejmenší a aby tam byla co nejmenší asymetrie.

Andrea: Kam jdete? Tatínek vozíčkáře: Jdeme tady kousek po okolí… Andrea: Jdete na

procházku, dokud není úplně vedro… Tatínek vozíčkaře: Přesně tak.

ANDREA

Rozhlížím se a dýchám. Úžasný lesopark s širokými cestami a prostornými loukami,

prvorepublikové pavilony, mozaika se slunečními hodinami, vysoké borovice, lípy, břízy.

Obrovská okna propouštějí spoustu světla. Který průvodce ti pomohl z temnoty na světlo,

Vašíku? Kdo tě vyvedl zpátky do života, když to bylo jen o fous? I já potřebuji nějakou duši

doprovodnou…


Leť, pravdo věrná širým světem a zvěstuj zdravý duch: Ó dejte, dejte chorým dětem potravu

vhodnou, slunce, vzduch!

Terapeutka: Zvedej nožičky, jedna střídá druhou… koukej na mamku, jako čáp, zvedej ty

kolínka nahoru… šlapej a pokračuj pořád…

ANDREA

Když doktor František Hamza léčebnu v Luži zakládal, věděl, že k léčbě je třeba především

kázeň, přesný režim, laskavost a důslednost. Takhle se tady léčila na začátku 20. století

dětská tuberkulóza a stejně se tady léčí i dnes.

THERAPIST

They’ve just brought us a child who is supine, doesn’t communicate. We first need to teach

him to eat, that’s the start. He needs to learn to ask to go to the toilet. Then he needs to

learn to sit and all that is a very long therapy. Sometimes it’s faster, sometimes slower and

sometimes unfortunately it ends in some development phase without any further progress.

But if there is progress then great, we can put the child on its feet so that the consequences

of the injury are as few as possible and that there is as little asymmetry as possible.

REPO

Andrea: Where are you going? Father of a boy on wheelchair: We’re going to walk around

here... Andrea: You’re going for a walk before it gets too hot... Father of a boy on

wheelchair: Exactly.

ANDREA

I look around and breathe in. A wonderful forest park with wide paths and large meadows,

pavilions built at the start of the 20th century, a mosaic with a sundial, tall pines, lime and

birch trees. Huge windows let in lots of light. Who guided you from the darkness to light,

Václav? Who has led you back to life when it was such a close escape? I, too, need a soul to

accompany me…


Fly, faithful truth, through the wide world and herald a healthy spirit: Oh, give, give ailing

children suitable nourishment, sunshine and air!

Therapist: Lift your feet, one after the other... look at your mum, like a crane, lift your knees

When doctor František Hamza founded the sanatorium in Luže he knew that curing requires

discipline, punctual regime, kindness and consistency. That’s how children with tuberculosis

were treated here at the turn of the 20th

century and how it is treated here today.

VÁCLAV

Děti se tu hodně střídají. Vždycky se dívám, jestli přijede nějaký kamarád, se kterým bych

mohl hrát hry. Většinou hrajeme něco na úrovni „šprtec“ (pozn. šprtání prsty do vršků od

pet-lahví).

TEREZA

Na pavilonu M jsou děti s rodičema. Ale na pavilonu E bych byla sama, což by byl pro mě

velký pokrok.

ZDENA, její matka

Jmenuji se Zdeňka Chvojková, jezdíme sem už 14 let a pamatuji se, že když jsem tady byla

poprvé, tak v přízemí visely nástěnky a na nich obrázky dětské mozkové obrny. A já jsem si

říkala: Vždyť my sem vlastně vůbec nepatříme! Protože já jsem ani v jejích 15 měsících

netušila, že ta naše cácora tu obrnu má.

TEREZA

Já jsem dneska moc šťastná, protože se mi podařilo sednout si na paty, což je pro mě velmi

těžké, protože jsem to mnoho let nedokázala. Andrea: Tak to ti, Terezo, moc blahopřeju!

Terka: A měli jste slyšet maminku, když jsem jí to telefonovala, já jsem myslela, že skorobrečí!

ZDENA, její matka

Ta diagnóza není jednoduchá, ale dá se s tím pracovat. Nebudu dělat hrdinu – celý první rok

jsem nad ní brečela, protože jsme cvičili od šestého dne od narození. Byla nedonošená. Když

jsem cvičila rok a rok to dítě šestkrát denně brečelo, tak jsem brečela i já a říkala si, jestli to

má vůbec smysl, když nevidím žádný pokrok. Pak jsme přijely sem a najednou začaly

pokroky!

TEREZA

Já jsem sice vyrůstala s normálníma dětma ve škole, ale vím, že všechny děti jsou já, i když

mají obrnu, nebo epilepsii. Každej jsme nějakej. A jaké by to bylo, kdybychom byli všichni

stejní? Kdybychom neměli handicapy? To je věc života, věc okamžiku. Někdo se s tím narodí,

někomu se to stane. Moje babička vždycky říká, že je vděčná za každej den, kterej prožije. I

když prší.

VÁCLAV

There are always new children. I always watch whether a new friend is arriving whom I could

play games with. We usually play something at the level of “šprtec” (note: flicking water

bottle lids).

Children in the M pavilion stay here with their parents. But I’d be alone in the E Pavilion

which would be a great progress for me.

ZDENA, her mother

My name is Zdeňka Chvojková, I am Tereza’s mother. We’ve been coming here for 14 years

and I remember when I came here the first time there were notice boards downstairs with

pictures of children with cerebral palsy. And I thought: We don’t belong here at all! Because

still in her 15 months I didn’t realise that the little girl of ours had palsy.

TEREZA

I’m really happy today because I’ve managed to sit on my heels which is really difficult for

me, because I couldn’t do it for many years. Andrea: Congratulations, Tereza! Tereza: And

you should have heard mum when I told her on the phone, I thought she might cry!

ZDENA, her mother

The diagnosis is not easy, but you can work with it. I won’t pretend to be a hero – I cried and

cried over her the first year, because we exercised from her sixth day. She was prematurely

born, and when we did the exercises for a year and my child cried six times a day at home, I

cried over her too and asked myself if it’s worth it, when I can’t see any progress. Only when

we came here did the progress start to show!

TEREZA

I don’t think about it all that much. I was brought up with normal kids at school, but I know

that all children are like me. They may have palsy or epilepsy. Everyone has something. And

what would it be like if we were all the same? If we didn’t have handicaps? It’s a question of

life, of a moment. Someone is born with it, to someone it happens. My granny always says

that she’s grateful for every day she can have. Even when it rains.

ZDENA, její matka

A teď, když je jí čtrnáct, vidím, že i tyto lázně udělaly velkou změnu. Pro někoho malichernávěc, ale pro mě ohromná novinka: dokáže si obléct ponožky! Už se sama oblíkne! Na to se

těším od té chvíle, co se narodila.

VÁCLAV

Když se řekne Pavilon M, tak se mi vybaví ty teploučký koupele…. Prostě vodoléčba.

PRIMÁŘKA

Na našich pavilonech máme děti s chronickými onemocněními a velice přibývá úrazů. Léčba

je v tom případě „běh na dlouhou trať“.

ANDREA

Třetí týden. Zasáhl mě hluboký smutek a strašná únava. Usnula jsem už v šest při poslechu

audioknížky, v sedm jsem mátožně Vašíka převlíkla, dala mu léky a uložila ho, umyla se. Lehla

jsem si do postele k Vašíkovi, propletli jsme si prsty a byli tak spolu. Venku se navečer zvedl

vítr, je osm, v těch obřích oknech pozorujeme, jak se komíhají větve stromů sotva olistěných,

posloucháme šumění v korunách těch velikých lip a bříz. A slyším Vašíka cosi šeptat – dnes je

to teprve pátý den, co vůbec artikuluje nějaká slova, logopedi z něj zatím vyrazili „ jo“ a „ne“.

Zvedl se na lokty a dívá se na ledničku, na které máme nalepenou rodinnou fotku z výletu.

Přeříkává si, co vidí: taťka, mamka, Anežka, Vašík, Matěj. A zase uléhá a usíná.

Hipoterapeut: Ty hnědý jsou huculové, ty bílý jsou starokladrubský běloušové.

ANDREA

Na ranní směnu nastupují hrdinky lužské hipoterapie: Cety a Bouřka

ZDENA, her mother

And now when she’s fourteen I can see that even the spa treatment here was a great

change. For some it’s trivial, but for me it’s something I’ve been looking forward to since she

was born - she can put on her socks! She can get dressed! It’s silly, but for me it’s a great life

achievement, that she can put on her socks.

VÁCLAV

When you say the M Pavilion, I think of lovely warm baths…. Simply water treatment.

SENIOR DOCTOR

In our pavilions we have children with chronic ailments - neurological, orthopaedic - but

there are also more and more injuries. The treatment takes a lot of time.

ANDREA

Third week. I was flooded with deep sadness and terrible tiredness. I fell asleep at six

listening to an audiobook, I changed Václav drowsily at seven, gave him his medicine and put

him to bed and washed. I lay down in Václav’s bed, we interlocked our fingers and were

together like that. The wind outside rose in the evening, it’s eight o’clock, through the large

windows we watch the branches of trees with hardly any leaves yet, we listen to the rustle inthe crowns of the large lime and birch trees. And I can hear Václav whisper something – this

is the fifth day he’s been able to articulate some words, speech specialists have so far made

him say “yeah” and “no”. He lifted himself up on his elbows and looks at the fridge on which

there’s a family photo from a trip. He recites what he can see: daddy, mummy, Anežka,

Václav, Matěj. He lies down again and falls asleep.

ANDREA

The morning shift starts for the heroines of hippotherapy in Luže: Cety and Bouřka

Václav: Mohl by někdo zrychlit, když má nějaký boty, nebo …

Andrea: Vašík se chtěl zeptat, jestli by mohl nohama pobídnout koně, jako to dělají žokejové.

Hipoterapeuti: Zkusíš to a uvidíme, jestli tě poslechne, ano?

Andrea: Vašíku, řekneš to slovo a zkusíš ho tak jenom takhle lehce patama ho pobídnout,

ano?

Hipoterapeut Kopecký: Jenom tak ťuknout, ano? Poslechla, vidíš! … Poslechla tě! Pěkně

vykročila!

MOHAMED+ANDREA

Bloumáme po chodbách s tatínkem Mohamedem a jeho šestiletým synem Farisem. Oba

dnes odjíždí. Faris se chce rozloučit s Matýskem.

Mohamed: My name is Mohammad Raseeriya, I’m from Saudi Arabia. I came here to for

some good treatment for my son, because I heard a lot about the Czech Republic...

ANDREA

Mohamed Rasírija je ze Saudské Arábie. Přijel sem i s rodinou kvůli svému synovi. Je v České

republice už popáté. Vyzkoušel různé lázně a v Hamzově léčebně je moc spokojený. Užplánuje pobyt i na příští rok.

Mohamed:...physiotherapy for my son and he had a good result and he is improving and I’m

planning to come back next year.

Andrea: Can you tell me once more what’s your name?

Faris: Faris.

Andrea: What are you going to do?

Faris: Ergotherapy.

Faris má ergoterapii. Vystřihuje záložku do knížky. Každou chvíli se ale převalí na bok, lenoší,

moc se mu do práce nechce.

Andrea: Václav wanted to ask if he could jog the horse the way jockeys do it.

Hippotherapists: You’ll try it and we’ll see if she obeys to you, okay?

Andrea: Václav, you will only say the word and gently urge her with your heels like that,

okay?

Hippotherapist Kopecký: Just a little tap, okay? She’s obeyed, you see!... She’s started

walking!

We’re walking along the corridors with father Mohammad and his six-year-old son Faris.

They’re leaving today. Faris wants to say goodbye to Matýsek.

Mohammad: My name is Mohammad Raseeriya, I’m from Saudi Arabia I came here for some

good treatment for my son, because I heard a lot about the Czech Republic...

ANDREA

Mohammad Raseeriya is from Saudi Arabia. He’s come here with his family because of his

son. He has been to the Czech Republic five times already. He’s tried various spas and he is

very content with the Hamza sanatorium. He is already planning his next year’s stay.

Mohammad: ...physiotherapy for my son and he had a good result and he is improving and

I’m planning to come back next year.

Andrea: Can you tell me once more what’s your name?

Faris: Faris.

Andrea: What are you going to do?

Faris: Ergotherapy.

It’s Faris’s ergotherapy lesson. He is cutting out a bookmark. Every now and again he rolls his

side, he’s lazy, he’s not very keen on working.

MOHAMED+ANDREA

Mohammed: ...different style of life, it’s not a big deal, you know.

Mohamed se v České republice cítí dobře. Je tady přirozeně odlišný styl života, ale to mu

nedělá problém. „Rád se přizpůsobím,“ říká, „je potřeba přijmout pravidla společnosti, ve

které zrovna žijeme. Jediný opravdu závažný problém je, že Češi neumí anglicky.“

Mohammed: The only difficulty I face a lot is they don’t speak English.

Andrea: So it’s something new. He wasn’t able to do it before.

Mohamed: Exactly.

S Farisem je to jako s mnoha jinými dětmi tady. Dva roky rodiče netušili nic, potom mu lékaři

Podařilo se! Faris má fotku s Matýskem, strká mu velkou čokoládu a spokojeně si vykračuje

Loučíme se. Farisovi se za dlouhých sedm týdnů rehabilitace nejvíc líbilo hraní s Matyášem a

individuální cvičení s fyzioterapeutkou Radkou. S Mohamedem si přejeme hodně štěstí. Sobě

navzájem i našim dětem.

Vidíš, Františku, ty ses jezdil učit do švýcarských tuberkulózních sanatorií, dnes do tvé

léčebny jezdí i lidi z Arábie nebo Ameriky.

Faris: Sleep.

Andrea: Oh, you should continue, come on.

MOHAMMAD + ANDREA

Mohammad: ...different style of life, it’s not a big deal, you know.

Mohammad feels good in the Czech Republic. The life style is naturally different here, but

that’s not a problem for him. “I’m happy to adapt,” he says, “it’s necessary to accept the

rules and order of the society in which you live. The only real problem is that Czechs can’tspeak English.”

Mohammad: The only difficulty I face a lot is they don’t speak English.

Andrea: So it’s something new. He wasn’t able to do it before.

Mohammad: Exactly.

Faris is like many other kids here. For two years his parents didn’t suspect anything, thendoctors diagnosed palsy. Faris is a beautiful, lively boy with large eyes and a mane of curly

hair. When he arrived he could only go in the lift. Now he walks down the stairs and jumps

down the last two.

Done! Faris has a photo with Matyáš, he gives him a large bar of chocolate and contentedlywalks out of the M Pavilion.

We say good bye. What Faris liked the best in the seven long weeks of rehab was playing

with Matyáš and individual exercises with physiotherapist Radka. Mohammed and I wish

each other and our children lots of luck.

You see, František, you travelled to Swiss tuberculosis sanatoriums to learn, now people

from Arabia or America come to your sanatorium.

Já si myslím, že je to díky tomu, že tady ta rehabilitace je skutečně velice náročná, hlavně na

to dítě. V jiných státech nejsou takové nároky a rehabilitace je tam velmi benevolentní .

Důraz je kladen na to, aby si klient vybral, co chce dělat. Ne to, co by měl dělat, aby se ten

jeho stav zlepšil.

Kdyby terapeut nebyl důslednej, řekne: No, tak ty, chlapečku, pláčeš, tak už toho necháme…

ale to se nikam nedostanete! Pokud jsou dobrý výsledky, tak jsou za cenu až takovýho …

11. rehabilitační týden: Cvičení – hypertronický trapéz, balanční stoj, přenášení váhy,

posilování pánevního dna. Hipoterapie – Vašík zvedá ruce, záda rovná, zadek plně sedí.

Mechanoterapie nohy, zátěž 3, práce levé nohy 41 procent, pravá 59 procent.

VÁCLAV

Dneska jsem jel 15 minut, ujel jsem 4,4 kilometrů, křeče nula, 3, 0 kcal… Andrea: A bolí tě

nohy? Václav: Nebolí.

Pavilon M by byl sám o sobě plný energie, protože děti jsou plné energie. Atmosféra je tu jak

kdy, když má někdo špatný den, tak je tu atmosféra na nic a když tady svítí sluníčko, tak je to

tady úžasný.

I think it’s because the rehabilitation here is very demanding, especially on the child. In other

countries they don’t have such high demands and rehabilitation is very benevolent. It is

stressed that the patient can choose what they want to do. Not what they should do to

make their situation better.

If the therapist is not consistent and says: Well, boy, you’re crying, so let’s stop... That way

you never get anywhere. If the results are good, it’s at the cost of tough training. You need

to be kind, but you mustn’t make concessions.

Eleventh week of rehabilitation: Exercising – hypertonic trapezius, balancing stand, shifting

body weight, strengthening pelvic muscles. Hippotherapy – Václav raises his arms, his back

straight, his bottom fully sits. Leg mechanotherapy, load 3, left leg working at 41 per cent,

right at 59 per cent.

VÁCLAV

I cycled for 15 minutes, managed 4.4 kilometres, zero cramps, 3.0 kilocalories... … Andrea:

Do your legs hurt? Václav: They don’t.

The M Pavilion would be full of energy, because children are full of energy. The atmosphere

here changes. If someone has a bad day, the atmosphere is not very good, and when the sun

shines, it’s wonderful here.

VÁCLAV

Různí sportovci si vždycky vezmou mezi sebe jednoho sportovce s handicapem a jedou na

kolech přes celou republiku. A zrovna probíhají Hamzovou odbornou léčebnou.

Při té příležitosti je běh léčebnou pro všechny a já jsem ho chtěl taky běžet.

REPO ZÁVOD

Na start! Pojďte za mnou, už to konečně odpálíme…Lukáši, prosím tě…. Startovní čára,připravte se ….. má to dvě kola, dohromady asi půl kilometru…jsme všichni na startu? … Vaši,

podívej, kolik lidí poběží, nemůžou být všichni vepředu…. Tři, dva, jedna, start! Rozběh (do

toho mluvím, slyšíme zvuky běhu)

ANDREA

Běží, jede, popojíždí a sviští si to kolem nás děti na vozíku, děti na trojkolkách, koloběžkách,

mrňata na odrážedlech, maminky s kočárky. Držím se s Vašíkem za ruku a pomaličku běžíme

po okraji silnice. Netrvá dlouho a úplně všichni nás předběhnou. Jsme poslední. To Václav

ještě nikdy nezažil. Otáčí se, beze slova odchází, mizí pryč.

Vašíku! Co je? Kam jdeš? Vašku!

VÁCLAV

Při tom běhu se stalo, že já jsem chtěl běžet na plný votáčky, jenomže moje kolegyně –

mamka, mě pobízela k vytrvalému běhu, abysem tam vydržel běžet. Což mě naštvalo, takže

jsem nakonec neběžel vůbec. – Užs mi to odpustil? – Upřímně? – Ne.

ANDREA

S tímhle teda nevím, Františku … jak mluvit s desetiletým klukem, kterého předběhli úplně

všichni?

For this occasion there is also a run across the sanatorium grounds for everyone and I

wanted to run too.

Three, two, one, start! Hurry up! Be careful, children!

ANDREA

Children on wheelchairs, children on tricycles, scooters, babies on push-bikes, mums with

pushchairs are running, riding, whizzing past us. I’m holding Václav’s hand and we slowly run

along the edge of the road. It doesn’t take long and everyone overtakes us. We are last.

Andrea in REPO - Václav, what’s wrong? What happened?

Václav has never experienced this. He turns round and leaves without a word, disappears.

REPO

Václav, what’s up? Tell me what happened. The track is the other way. Are you tired?

VÁCLAV

During the race I wanted to run to the full, but my running partner, my “colleague” - my

mum, made me run endurance style, so that I could run to the end. Which made me angry,

so in the end I ended up not running at all. – Have you forgiven me? - Frankly? – Yes. – No.

ANDREA

This is something I cannot figure out, František... How do I talk to a ten-year-old who was

overtaken by everyone?
