VodafonePower to you

What’s in store?

Your vans and trucks keep the world’s goods moving. Whether

you’re carrying pallets or parcels, the function you play is critical to

consumers, companies and governments alike.

But if you’re to beat your competition — and exceed your shippers’ expectations to deliver farther, faster and for less — you have some big questions to answer. How can you:

• Keep your costs down? Oil prices are on a long-term upward track — raising the cost of fuel. And there’s road pricing, insurance and other costs to consider too. Yet in a volatile economy, customers are extremely price-sensitive: IDC found that supply chain costs are still logistics managers’ top priority. You need to cut wasted time and route miles to the bone if you’re to maintain margins.

• Be more environmentally friendly? Truck and vans are big polluters, not just in terms of greenhouse gas emissions and air quality, but noise and congestion, too. You need to prove that you’re playing your part to make your fleet greener and comply with the tightest regulations.

• Improve fleet safety? You have a duty of care to protect your drivers and other road users from risk — and to comply with legislation, such as the EU Working Time Directive and US rest-break rules. Safety has to be a top priority.

• Deliver a better service? Logistics is often seen as a commodity, and you face strong local and regional competition. To stand out you need to increase delivery speed and reliability, and surprise your customers with innovation in the services you offer — with features such as real-time shipment tracking, and same-day delivery to customers.

Machine to machine (M2M) connects your trucks, shipments and drivers to your central management systems, enabling them to communicate in real time. It’s already widely used to power fleet tracking applications. But it has the potential to do much more: helping you answer all of these questions, and taking you to a new level of efficiency and control. Let us show you how.

Ernst & Young surveyed transport and logistics providers about what they’d do if diesel prices hit $5 per gallon. Nearly half said they’d do nothing; others said they’d just try to pass the cost on to customers. M2M can help you find another way to thrive in a difficult operating environment.

M2M: the logistics nervous system

M2M connects your vehicles, shipments and management systems in

real time — giving you the insight and control to make improvements

in everything from fuel efficiency to delivery speed.

Drive efficiency from start to finishWith M2M, we can help you cut costs from every part of your operations:

• Routing: M2M fleet management solutions combine location data about each van, cab and trailer with mapping, live traffic data and upcoming job details to assign routes more efficiently. They can cut fuel costs by eliminating unnecessary mileage and idling, and maximise vehicle utilisation through backloading and shipment consolidation. As road pricing and congestion charging schemes spread, you can adapt your routing to minimise those costs, too.

• Vehicle maintenance: Using sensors that feed vehicle performance data over the M2M network, you can spot and diagnose problems remotely, and schedule vehicles in for preventative maintenance before a breakdown — without doing unnecessary work.

• Driver efficiency: In-cab monitoring systems can track how each driver is accelerating and braking, identifying opportunities for training to improve their smoothness and efficiency. You can also make sure that each driver is complying with the Working Time Directive and other regulations, making the most of the people you’ve got available — critical when you’re dealing with a shortage of skilled drivers.

• Insurance: M2M-connected in-cab cameras help you reduce accidents by monitoring how safely each driver is behaving and making sure they’re not speeding. It also enables you to track and recover stolen vehicles. With M2M you can demonstrate to insurers that you’re minimising risk, and cut your policy costs.

.

Improve sustainabilityRefreshing your fleet is clearly a big part of becoming more environmentally friendly: new engine technologies, high-volume trailers and alternative fuels can cut emissions per route-mile. But new vehicles are costly. With M2M-enabled intelligent navigation and routing, and active monitoring of driving style, you can cut each vehicle’s CO

2 output, and also adapt your routing and

scheduling to avoid noise in residential areas, cut night driving, and automatically skirt traffic jams and low-emission zones.

Protect your staff and assetsDrivers are lone workers, and they may be many miles from help in the event of an accident or attack. M2M can give these workers a lifeline, allowing them to raise the alarm manually with a panic button in the cab or on a mobile device. M2M can also monitor drivers and vehicles automatically, instantly alerting dispatchers to a collision or even if a vehicle deviates from a planned route, so you can act more quickly.

Your vehicles, and the products they carry, are also at risk of theft, loss or damage as they pass from warehouse to customer. M2M sensors installed in trailers, pallets and cabs can help you track their location and status, and automatically alert you to unexpected behaviour: whether it’s a refrigerated trailer warming up, a sealed container being opened, or a truck moving when it shouldn’t.

Accelerate your supply chain to deliver better serviceLogistics managers report that supply chain agility is second only to cost in their list of priorities. Whatever you can do to keep your customers informed, give them control, and deliver to them more quickly will put you ahead of competitors. M2M can give real-time information about where each shipment is on its route from port to warehouse to customer, giving your staff near real-time visibility into the status of the delivery.

M2M also enables you to offer new, value-added features directly to your customers: for example, M2M-sourced information, delivered to a customer portal, enables shippers to track-and-trace their delivery in real time and get an accurate arrival estimate so they can plan loading and unloading crews. A seamlessly integrated M2M-enabled supply chain even lets you offer commercial and consumer customers the ability to change their delivery preferences — for instance, from home to work or store — even after their shipment has been dispatched.

Isotrak expands fleet management services with VodafoneSince 1999, Isotrak’s fleet management services have given UK fleet owners access to vehicle location through on-board wireless devices. Vodafone provided Isotrak with an M2M solution based on standard SIM cards. The Vodafone network covers 99% of the UK, giving Isotrak customers visibility of their vehicles on the vast majority of their routes. Vodafone created a custom tariff that enabled Isotrak to offer its customers lower fees and expand the range of services it offers.

With Vodafone SIM cards installed in their Isotrak devices, fleet owners can offer hands-free voice and text communication to drivers, to communicate route changes and provide a lifeline in emergencies. Because the Vodafone network can transmit much more data than just vehicle positions, Isotrak has been able to offer fleet owners information from engine management sensors, including data about vehicle speed, temperature, fuel consumption and carbon emissions, which they can use to track improvements in maintenance and sustainability.

Putting M2M to work

Logistics companies, fleet management solution providers and other

leaders in the road haulage sector are already using our M2M solutions

to transform their efficiency and agility. Here are just a few examples.

Vodafone M2M solutions for transport and logistics

M2M helps Zenith Hygiene cut CO2

emissions by 28%Zenith Hygiene Group, a cleaning and hygiene specialist, is avoiding almost 600 tonnes of CO

2 emissions per year with

TomTom fleet management, supported by our M2M services.

Zenith’s 597-tonne saving equates to a 28% reduction in CO2

emissions across its 61-strong lorry fleet. Zenith is saving more than £200,000 per year in fuel, and a further £50,000 in maintenance — meaning M2M is delivering full ROI in just three months.

The solution has enabled Zenith to benchmark its vehicle usage and fuel consumption, while managers and drivers have been given an insight into driver performance behind the wheel. As a result they have been able to minimise incidents of speeding and harsh driving, and promote a greener, safer and more efficient fleet operation.

Infomobility.it cuts fleet insurance premiums by 60%Infomobility.it provides real-time, in-vehicle monitoring for haulage companies and their insurers. These monitoring services help encourage safer driving habits. Fleet operators using the technology to demonstrate safe practices have seen insurance premiums fall by up to 60%.

Infomobility.it chose Vodafone to provide the wireless data connectivity that powers these M2M solutions, because we met its requirements for high network reliability and coverage, Quality of Service (QoS) and cost-effective network charges for data traffic.
