4.1 Explain opportunities for exploiting converging

technology. Research Report

Page 7: Ideas

What you should do… Research the convergence of technologies and what opportunities this

creates

Page 8: Ideas

How to Generate New IdeasStart at the beginning

Page 9: Ideas

Where are the ideas hiding?Everything around you can be a possible topic for writing articles, stories, or

anything else you can imagine.

Finding an idea is limited only by your own imagination.

Page 10: Ideas

Read forums and message boardsMillions of people post on forums and message boards each day in search of

answers to their personal burning questions.

As you stop into your favorite forum, look to see what types of questions these people are asking, then do some research on said topic.

With just a bit of effort, you could produce a great article.

You could also end up writing several articles on the same topic, just seen from different points of view.

Page 11: Ideas

Write out a list of possible topicsDo it the old fashioned way.

Grab a pen and paper, and list as many topics as you can think of.

Next, put a mark by the ones you feel most comfortable writing about or the ones you'd like to find more information on.

For each topic, try coming up with a list of sub-topics or particular points that should be covered under each topic.

Finally, try to come up with a list of pros and cons that could be covered for each topic.

Page 12: Ideas

Favorite websitesRun through some of your favorite websites and jot down some of their good

and bad qualities.

What would make the site better?

What parts of the site could be removed without hurting its integrity?

If you like to play games online, write about which games are the best or write about which sites are appropriate for certain age groups.

Page 13: Ideas

Newspapers and magazinesAs you're reading through your daily newspaper, make a list of the main topics

covered.

Make up a list of headlines that grab the readers attention.

Magazines are full of information that could lead to other such articles.

As you read about a certain topic, try to come up with similar ideas that could lead to future articles, or make up a list of opposing ideas for a rebuttal type subject.

Page 14: Ideas

Visual aidsPictures are a great place to find things to write about.

For instance, if you're looking at a picture of a horse standing on a grassy hill, you might come up with topics about breeds of horses, best ways to properly care for horses, or even which areas are best for raising horses.

A simple picture of a coffee pot could lead to articles about the coffee industry, which coffee makers are the best or worst, or even how the coffee beans took over the world.

Let your imagination run wild.

Page 15: Ideas

Individual BrainstormingYou need to generate an idea for exploiting converging technology

Come up with an idea for a new way (opportunity) of using converging technology

Go…..

Page 16: Ideas

Peer Assessment & Feedback Test your idea in a group situation

Get some feedback from your peers about your idea

Is it feasible, interesting, unique, sellable?

Make notes

Page 17: Ideas

4.2 Research and plan a test for an identified

opportunity. Research Report

Page 18: Ideas

What you should do… Identify questions to ask the potential target audience for an identified

opportunity

Page 19: Ideas

ResearchHow do you know if it is a good idea?

Page 20: Ideas

The Research Process You need to research both your idea and how you will test your idea on your

potential audience

Page 21: Ideas

Consider the Commissioning Guidelines Ensure that the idea is original and that it adds something new to what already exists

Make sure that your idea isn't already operational on any other websites

Be sure that it will work and carry out thorough research to iron out potential problems

Be clear about cross-platform potential and flexibility

Try to keep your designs within the look and feel of existing material to ensure continued branding

Think about your audience and make sure your ideas are well targeted

Ensure the idea complies with broadcaster/company guidelines

Ensure that the facilities, hardware and software you need are accounted for

Ensure that the idea is appropriate for the commissioner

Page 22: Ideas

The Research Process1. Check to see if your idea already exists. In what format does it exist?

2. Is your idea feasible? Consider finances, technical aspects, do some initial audience response testing (brief survey)

3. Develop some branding ideas

4. Do some audience profiling

5. Check the guidelines (commissioning/funding/copyright)

6. What equipment/personnel would you need to make it happen?

7. Is it appropriate? (Child protection, Legal status etc.)

Questionnaires / SurveysThe four most important criteria for good questions:

Pointed As short as possible Non-ambiguous Well-structured

When designing the questionnaire you should pay attention to the question order.

Do not mix questions, so that they will appear incoherently.

Let someone else test your survey before publishing it, to make sure that your questions are clear and make sense.
