IDAHO FAVORED TOMAKE >MOORE= HISTORY
Sunday=s GI Pattison Canadian International S. at Woodbine
will certainly live up to its moniker, as four talented runners
from abroad are on site to challenge five North American-based
horses for the lion=s share of the C$1-million purse.
Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith and Mrs. John Magnier=s Idaho
(Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) was made the 5-2 morning-line favorite to
become the first sophomore to beat his elders since Joshua Tree
(Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) for the same connections in 2010. A victory
by Idaho, who most recently dislodged Seamie Heffernan at the
three-furlong mark when favored at 2-3 in the G1 Ladbrokes St
Leger Sept. 10, would give jockey Ryan Moore a remarkable
fourth straight success in the International, but first for trainer
Aidan O=Brien. Sir Michael Stoute has sent out the last two
winners of the International in Hillstar (GB) (Danehill Dancer
{Ire}) and Cannock Chase (Lemon Drop Kid) in 2014 and 2015,
and will be represented by The Queen=s Dartmouth (GB)
(Dubawi {Ire}).
Four of the five remaining entrants exit the Sept. 17
GI Northern Dancer S., a farcically run affair won by The Pizza
Man (English Channel) in a blanket finish from Wake Forest
(Ger) (Sir Percy {GB}) and World Approval (Northern Afleet).
Fifth that afternoon was Danish Dynaformer (Dynaformer), who
was inconvenienced by the slow pace that afternoon, but looks
up against it yet again in what looms a sit-sprint International.
VANCOUVER TO REVERSE SHUTTLE TO U.S. >TDN Rising Star= Vancouver (Aus) (Medaglia d=Oro), who
completed a perfect 2-year-old preparation with a smooth
victory in the 2015 G1 Golden Slipper S., will reverse shuttle
from Coolmore Australia to the farm=s Ashford Stud in Versailles,
Kentucky, for the 2017 breeding season.
AI saw Vancouver in Australia last week and he=s an
exceptionally good-looking individual who should sire both
racehorses and sales horses,@ said Ashford manager Dermot
Ryan. AI think U.S. breeders will be very impressed when they
see him. He=s by a very good sire in Medaglia d=Oro and is
proving extremely fertile with nearly 50 mares already scanned
in foal. Our sire sensation Uncle Mo was also an unbeaten
champion juvenile at two, as was Shanghai Bobby whose first
yearlings were very well received this fall and who Vancouver
very much reminds me of. It all bodes very well for the future.@

Vancouver to Reverse Shuttle cont. from p1
Victorious in the Listed Thoroughbred Breeders Plate on career
debut, Vancouver added the G3 Canonbury S. at second asking,
then broke the Rosehill juvenile track record in the G2 Todman
S., stopping the timer in 1:08.83 for the 1200 meters. The 3-2
favorite for the Slipper while backing up on just two weeks= rest,
Vancouver was taken on from both sides in the final furlong and
a half, but proved 3/4 of a length too good in the finish (video).
Bred by John Camilleri=s Fairway Thoroughbreds, Vancouver is
a son of the stakes-placed 2-year-old filly Skates (Aus) (Danehill),
making him a half-brother to

Owned by Chuck Zacney=s Cash Is King LLC, the Maryland-bredCathryn Sophia recorded her first breeze since the Cotillioneffort Wednesday, covering a half-mile in :47.46 (2/14), but themove was not enough to sway trainer John Servis. "Her white blood count was a little high after the Cotillion,@ theconditioner commented. AI watched her very closely after therace and actually she recovered from that remarkably fast. Igave her a little work [Wednesday] which I thought was solid, but I really wanted to see spectacular. Horses of this quality area rarity and you have to take care of them. Her Oaks win wasthe kind of performance you never forget as a trainer. It is agreat feeling to see her end the year healthy and happy.@ Added Zacney: "What a ride this has been, I mean she has wonsix of nine races for us by over 50 lengths. We have been soblessed in the horse business with Afleet Alex and now CathrynSophia. " Prior to her sensational score beneath the Twin Spires, CathrynSophia romped in the GII Forward Gal S. and the GII Davona DaleS. and was third in the GI Ashland S. She also rounded out thetrifecta in the GI Acorn S. and has current earnings of$1,229,720. Cathryn Sophia is consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency aship 113 to the upcoming Fasig-Tipton November Mixed Sale inLexington.
CAVORTING RETIRED TO STONESTREET Stonestreet Stables= Cavorting (Bernardini--Promenade Girl, by
Carson City) has been retired from racing and will join the farm=s
broodmare band in
2017, it was announced
Thursday. A post on the
Stonestreet website said
that the three-time
Grade I-winning >TDN
Rising Star= was recently
diagnosed with minor
bone bruising and would
not be able to make her
expected engagement in
the GI Longines Breeders= Cup Distaff at Santa Anita Nov. 4.
AWe are grateful to Kiaran McLaughlin and his team for the
care they have given her over the last three years and look
forward to her future foals,@ the post stated.
Four-year-old Cavorting won graded stakes in each of her
three years at the track, compiling a record of 8-1-1 from
13 starts and earning a total of $2,063,000. She captured the
GII Adirondack S. at Saratoga as a juvenile and the GI Longines
Test S. and GII Prioress S. at three. Cont. p5
With the exception of two brief interruptions during World
War II, the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe—Europe’s most presti-
gious horse race—has found its home at Longchamp Race-
course in Paris’s Bois de Boulogne since its inception in
1920. But there’s change in the air in France this year, and
with the rebuilding of its ancestral home, the action shifts to
Chantilly. We’ll take you through the town’s fabled training
grounds, and recommend our favorite Paris neighborhood
retreat. Elsewhere in Europe, we visit with a Newmarket clas-
sic: 83-year-old owner Bill Gredley—the businessman behind
Unex—who has his eye on this year’s Melbourne Cup with his
Big Orange. Stateside, uberchef Bobby Flay gives us his rec-
ommendations on dinner reservations if you’re headed to the
Breeders’ Cup next month, and there are great things hap-
pening in Maryland racing, both at Laurel and at Sagamore

spills the beans on his favorite things about France…and just
how much Pavlova it’s advisable to eat.

David DiPietro
Cavorting Retired cont.
The bay retires in the midst of a three-race win streak, which
included scores in the June 11 GI Ogden Phipps S. at Belmont
and the Aug. 27 GI Personal Ensign S. at Saratoga.
Cavorting was acquired by Stonestreet for $360,000 as a
Keeneland November weanling. A daughter of GSW Promenade
Girl, she has a >TDN Rising Star= juvenile half-brother named
Thirstforlife (Stay Thirsty) who finished third in the GII Best Pal S.
in August.
DI PIETRO HOPES TO BE DANCING AT FASIGby Jessica Martini
When Dancing Rags (Union Rags) crossed the finish line first in
the Oct. 7 GI Darley Alcibiades S., she not only gave Maryland
breeder David DiPietro his first Grade I winner, but also
provided a timely update for her Tiznow half-brother who will
sell at the upcoming Fasig-Tipton October Fall Yearlings Sale in
Lexington.
AIt was very
exciting--I=ve bred a
couple of stakes
winners, but this
was my first Grade
I winner,@ DiPietro
said, before
admitting he was
forced to celebrate
the career highlight
completely on his
own.
AI was at my business school reunion in New Hampshire, I was
by myself and I flipped on TVG just in time to watch the race,@
he laughed. AI was with a whole group of people later who had
no idea about horse racing at all, so I had absolutely zero people
to talk to about it with until I got back to Maryland on Sunday.
But it was a thrill nonetheless.@
DiPietro, a former senior executive of Deutsche Bank and
former president of the investment banking firm Signal Hill,
followed racing from a young age before partnering with fellow
racing enthusiast George Bolton on his first racehorse.
AI always had an interest in it as a kid,@ DiPietro said. AI grew up
in Maryland and would go to the Preakness every year. My aunt
worked at Pimlico part time as an accountant, so I would follow
it and watch the big races on television. Then when I was in my
business career, I got connected to George Bolton, who was a
good friend and a co-worker, and I really got into the business
with him. I bought a yearling with him at Saratoga and I=ve been
at it ever since--a lot of times with him and more recently I=ve
done a fair amount on my own.@
A member of the board of
Maryland Horse Breeders
Association and a former
president of the Maryland
Million Ltd., DiPietro
currently has five
broodmares--two based in
Kentucky and three in
Maryland.
AI=ll keep a couple of horses
in training in Maryland and I
have one horse in training in
Kentucky,@ DiPietro explained. ABut the primary focus for me is
really to breed and to sell.@
Even the horse in training in Kentucky was bought with an eye
towards a future broodmare career.
AI actually bought her as a broodmare prospect as a yearling
just because I really liked her,@ he said. AI work pretty closely
with [bloodstock agent] Larkin Armstrong and we were talking
about it and decided we would take that approach for this one
and so she is in training, but was really purchased with the idea
of having her be a broodmare at some point down the road.@
It was Armstrong=s name on the ticket when DiPietro
purchased Dancing Rags=s dam Home Court (Storm Cat) for
$110,000 at the 2012 Keeneland November sale. The then-11-
year-old mare, who had sold for $1.4 million at the 2005
Keeneland November sale, was in foal to Lookin at Lucky at the
time and the two men saw nothing but upside in the purchase.
Graded stakes placed on the track, Home Court is a daughter
of champion Jewel Princess (Key to the Mint). Just months
before the November sale, her Tapit yearling sold for $300,000
at the Keeneland September sale. That colt went on to be 2014
GII Amsterdam S. winner and GI King=s Bishop third-place
finisher Coup de Grace. Cont. p6

DiPietro cont.
AI=m not a swing-for-the-fences kind of player in this business, I
try to be pragmatic,@ DiPietro explained. AHome Court was an
incredibly well-bred mare who had sold off-the-track for
$1.4 million. She had been bred to some very good stallions, for
sure, and without any really big horses coming out of that. So I
think people grew a little leery of her. She was in foal to Lookin
at Lucky and we just felt like if we could get
her for that price and in foal to a first-year
stallion who might be popular, that we
would have pretty limited downside. We
both loved the pedigree and her yearlings
had all sold really well, so we were pretty
confident that we would probably do
reasonably well with her without any huge
expectations. It was just a really good value
at the time and we loved the pedigree and
she was a nice-looking mare who threw
nice-looking foals.@
The decision to send Home Court to GI Belmont S. winner
Union Rags was based largely on their physical match-ups.
AThe one thing about Home Court, with the matings we were,
and still always are, trying to put a little more leg onto her,@
DiPietro commented.
AShe is a little shorter and so we thought Union Rags fit thatbill nicely. We tried to breed her back to Will Take Charge lastyear and we loved the physical match there. And then we wentto Tiznow for some of the same reasons--an established sirewho might throw a good physical. That was sort of the thinkingin terms of the physical match and Larkin has been great atkeeping his eyes out for horses that suit her.@
Dancing Rags sold for $80,000 at last year=sKeeneland September sale before bringing$210,000 from Chadds Ford Stable at thisyear=s OBS March sale. AThere were a lot of Union Ragses in theKeeneland catalogue last year and I would saythat I think our strategy was sound, but sheended up not being as big as a lot of the otherUnion Ragses,@ DiPietro recalled. AHe didn=treally stamp himself as much on her as he didon some of the other horses in the sale and Ithink we suffered a little bit as a consequence.
She was a beautiful filly, very well put-together, but being in thefirst book, I think the bar is so high and there were so manyother ones to choose from, that despite Coup de Grace=ssuccess, we thought we would do really well, but I think maybeshe wasn=t exactly the physical type that the buyers werelooking for, particularly relative to other Union Ragses that wereavailable. Cont. p7

DiPietro cont. He added, AI was a little bit disappointed at what she brought, but I had made up my mind to let her go and hopefully shewould end up in good hands where she would help the mareout.@ Dancing Rags had made only one start for Chadds Ford and
trainer Graham Motion, a third-place finish in an Aug. 5 Laurel
maiden, when her yearling half-brother by Tiznow made his first
appearance in the sales ring at last month=s Keeneland
September sale. The youngster was led out unsold at $70,000.
AI think we were all--one of the people involved used the word
speechless--at what happened when he went in the ring [at
Keeneland],@ DiPietro admitted. AThere was so much pre-sale
interest and activity and vet work and re-looks, so we thought
we were in pretty good shape and well, well north of what
happened in the ring. I wasn=t there, but it seemed like the sale
started off kind of funny--it seemed to get stronger as it went
on. So I think it was one of those things where we just fell
through the cracks because there were no specific knocks on the
horse. He=s a big, flashy, strapping colt who vets really well. The
buyers on that day were maybe looking for something different
and we didn=t want to let him go.@
The yearling will return to the sales ring on the third and final
day of the Fasig October sale, which runs from Oct. 24 through
26, as hip 1237 through the Lane=s End consignment.
AI wasn=t interested in selling him for that price [at Keeneland],
but hopefully now he=ll get a little more attention and there
really isn=t much to knock him for,@ DiPietro said. AI=m hoping
he=ll get a lot more interest, particularly with the update.@
As a native Marylander, DiPietro has plenty to be excited
about as the state continues its racing renaissance.
AWe are very excited down here,@ he confirmed. AWe went
through a lot of tough years and we lost a lot of momentum, but
the numbers have started to turn up and some nice new
stallions have come into the state. The owner and breeder
program, which really rivals the best programs out there right
now, has made a significant difference. It=s been very lucrative
to the active breeders.@
He continued, AAnd of course, our purse structure has
improved and it=s attracted quite a bit of interest from trainers
outside of the state, so the racing has gotten meaningfully more
competitive. Being as close as we are to Fair Hill [Training
Center], we are getting a lot of entries from a number of great
trainers who are based there. So I actually think with these
maiden races down here at $40,000 plus a very good bonus
program, breaking your maiden at Laurel is actually quite good
because the competition is pretty stiff. Dancing Rags may have
been one of only a handful of horses who were Maryland-bred
in her maiden race, so there are quite a bit of people shipping in
and running here.
The other thing that has been great is the facilities that the
owners have started to pump a lot of money into, particularly
Laurel and hopefully Pimlico down the road. So it has made it a
more pleasant experience to go the races. I hope it lasts. Things
can be pretty volatile in this business, but I think for now, we are
trying to capitalize on it and sustain it for as far into the future
as we can.@
CALIFORNIA CHROME REMAINS ATOP WBRR There was little to no change at the top in the latest edition of

Chautauqua (Aus) (Encosta de Lago {Aus}) remains the world=s

point better than G1 Nunthorpe S. winner Mecca=s Angel (Ire)
(Dark Angel {Ire}), bound for this weekend=s G1 QIPCO British

A ROYAL INVASION AT WOODBINEby Michael Adolphson
The Crown is advancing on North American soil for the first
time in centuries--except this time the United Kingdom=s current
monarch, Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth II, will simply be
sending a pair of talented thoroughbreds to do battle for her in
a pair of Grade I events that top a smashing Sunday card at
Woodbine in greater Toronto.
Practicing a bit of sovereign privilege
over a former realm, Her Majesty
stands an outstanding chance to have
her iconic royal purple-and-scarlet
silks in the winner=s enclosure after
both races.
AI find it actually nice to have horses
[running for The Queen] and I=m very
proud to represent her,@ said Kerry
Jones, assistant to trainer Sir Michael
Stoute. AThere can be pressure, but
we train the horses the same and you try to put it in the back of
your mind. [The Queen] is a great ambassador for the sport and
she knows her horses. We treat them like any other owner=s
horses, but sometimes at the end of the day we do kind of think
>Oh, please win for The Queen=, of course.
AI wouldn=t say we are over-confident, but we are not here to
sightsee, especially for an owner like The Queen,@ Jones
continued. AWe=re here to race. [Stoute] knows what type of
horse he wants to bring out here and we=ve made stepping
stones to these races.@
Two Stoute-trained offspring of top international sire Dubawi
(Ire) will don those colors on Sunday, including Dartmouth (GB),
a Darley-bred who will likely be one of the favorites in the
featured C$1-million International over 12 grassy furlongs.
Impressive when out-gritting one of the top turf horses in the
world, Highland Reel (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), in the G2 Hardwicke S.
at Royal Ascot, the bay 4-year-old was a late-running third in the
G1 King George & Queen Elizabeth S. over the same trip behind
that rival in late July. Pointed toward the International since, he
prepped with a game second in the G3 Legacy Cup at Newbury
Sept. 17 over tiring ground.
ADartmouth was a little more boisterous out of the box after
shipping,@ Jones said. AHe being a 4-year-old colt took the trip a
little better and just wants to get on with it and do his job. He
just looks so well. We knew he had a little bit to work on and
needed the Newbury run. After Ascot we gave him a little break
and put some condition on him. The [Newbury] ground was very
soft and we were so pleased with how he ran. By the looks of it,
he has come on tremendously well.
AHe also will love this faster ground,@ she continued. AMany of
the Dubawi=s need firmer ground to do their best running and
that=s one of the reasons we are here. As far as the trip, he can
sit anywhere and you can honestly do anything with him. He can
sit behind and that suits him just fine. He=s very straightforward
and not one to sit on the bridled. He will settle right off it and let
the rider put him where they need to. Fingers crossed.@
A victory by Dartmouth would give
Stoute his fourth victory in the
International, making him the winningest
conditioner in the race=s storied history.
His victories include the previous two
years with Cannock Chase (Lemon Drop
Kid) and Hillstar (GB) (Danehill Dancer
{Ire}), as well as 1996 with the
exceptionally versatile Singspiel (Ire) (In
the Wings {GB}). It may worthy to note
that the last time that the race was three
weeks out from the GI Breeders= Cup Turf
and won by a Stoute trainee, said pupil
[Singspiel] wheeled back to run a bang-up second over the track
in America=s richest grass event--a race in which he is the
second-winningest trainer.
Diploma (GB), a 3-year-old Royal homebred, heads to the
C$500,000 GI E. P. Taylor S. over 10 furlongs as an improving
type who also seeks firmer ground, not too dissimilar from the
way subsequent champion and Stoute trainee Dank (GB) (Dansili
{GB}) was prior to shipping to North America to claim victories in
the GI Beverly D. S. and GI Breeders= Cup Filly & Mare Turf in
2013. Cont. p9

Royal Invasion cont.
Very close to Jones= heart, the listed winner has blossomed
under her care as head lass to the filly and will try to improve
upon an unplaced effort as the favorite in the
G3 Strensall S. at York against older males Aug. 20.
AShe is special, especially with being The Queen=s homebred,@
Jones explained. AShe has been a little more subdued since
arriving than [Dartmouth], but that isn=t unexpected. We=ve
been trying to step her up [in class], but the ground has been a
factor. She lost position in the race against colts and that hurt
her, but we are here because she=s capable of going into
Group 1 company. We would have done this at home, if not for
the ground.
AWe=d like her to be properly on the pace a bit,@ she
continued. AShe enjoys it there and if you drag her back, she can
get a little bit disappointed. We would like to see her more
involved, in third or fourth, and then see what happens. She has
the talent, so hopefully she runs her race.@
It may only be fitting that one or both of The Queen=s first
horses to compete at Woodbine prove victorious at the venue
that hosts its marquee event, the Queen=s Plate, every summer
in her honor.

Case Clay | Photos by Z
Before the Hammer is a series presented by Keeneland that will
spotlight consignors, their stories of success and their featured
offerings at the upcoming Keeneland November Breeding Stock
Sale.
TAKING CHARGE OF THE FUTURE AT THREE
CHIMNEYSby Amanda Duckworth
Three Chimneys Farm has been in a transition period recently,
and as a result, has made very specific selections when it comes
to what it will offer at this
year's Keeneland
November Breeding Stock
Sale. Many of their mares
on offer come from a turf
background, as the farm is
moving toward more
dirt-centric pedigrees.
"We looked at the mares
that we have and took a
lot of the grass ones and
put them on offer because
we want to have around
50 dirt pedigree families,"
said Case Clay, the farm's
chief commercial officer.
The reason for this new
direction is because Three Chimneys is looking toward the
future at the type of stallions it wants to stand.
"In America, dirt stallions are what people want to breed to,"
said Clay. "That's not taking anything away from the great
stallions in Kentucky that produce grass horses - we had Rahy
and Dynaformer - but we really want to focus on the Will Take
Charge-types that produce dirt horses.
"It is difficult to just go buy a stallion prospect, so we are going
to try and play in every market. Maybe we can buy one off the
track, maybe we can breed a dirt horse, and maybe we can buy
a dirt yearling or weanling. The classics here in America are on
dirt, so that's what we are going to try and produce. If we have
grass in the family of the mares, it is harder to produce a dirt
stallion."
Among the mares in the Three Chimneys draft this year is Wild
Wind (Ger) (hip 107) the Group 1-placed Danehill Dancer (Ire)
mare comes with an impressive pedigree, as her third dam is
champion and exceptional broodmare Miesque.
"She has it all in my opinion," said Clay. "She has the form, the
family, and the produce to be a really exciting mare."
Three Chimneys acquired Wild Wind in France at the 2012
Arqana December Breeding Stock Sale for i1.175 million ($1.5
million) and is only offering her now because of its move toward
dirt pedigrees. Other mares being offered include Grade I
winner Summer Soiree (hip 75),
who is by War Front, and the
Grade III-winning Tapit mare
Tapicat.
"It helps that this is an
international sale because these
are some international
pedigrees," said Clay. "It should
be a good market for these
mares."
Like it has in the past, Three
Chimneys will also be offering
some high-profile weanlings.
Amongst them is Summer
Soiree's colt by Will Take
Charge.
"It is a market play," said Clay.
"We were pleasantly surprised by the September market, and
we feel like this might be a good time to sell a special weanling
and the market would be receptive to it. The weanlings on offer
are less grass related, and more market driven."
The yearling market has been a good one for the farm as well,
as according to Clay, of the 20 yearlings to sell for $1 million or
more at Keeneland in the last two years, five of them came from
Three Chimneys.
"Three Chimneys has made a big change over the last few
years in regards to ownership, and it shows that the market is
receiving our product well," said Clay. "It's been rewarding in
that regard. That stat was through three different consignors.
We are working well breeding, raising, and selling horses the
market is receptive to."

Chimneys= Keeneland November consignment
Clay's family owned Three Chimneys for decades before selling
the majority of it to Goncalo Borges Torrealba in 2013. When it
comes to the Keeneland November Sale, there is no doubt that
Three Chimneys has certainly had its share of success both
before and after the farm changed hands.
In 2004, the farm offered a multiple Grade I-winning mare,
who as unlikely as it sounds, turned out to be a bargain when
she was hammered down for $4.2 million.
That mare, Take
Charge Lady, won
more than $2.4
million during her
career. Many of her
biggest victories
came at Keeneland,
where she pulled off
the hat-trick of
winning the
Alcibiades S. (then a
GII, now a GI), Ashland S. (GI), and Spinster S. (GI), the latter of
which she won twice. When she entered the ring at the
Keeneland November Sale, she was carrying her first foal.
The resulting foal, a filly named Charming, had a modest racing
career but went on to produce the Eclipse Award-winning filly
Take Charge Brandi. Take Charge Brandi sold for $6 million at
Keeneland's 2015 November Breeding Stock Sale to be the
highest-priced horse sold at public auction worldwide last year.
Take Charge Lady, meanwhile, subsequently produced Grade 1
winners Take Charge Indy and Will Take Charge, the latter of
which was named 2013 champion 3-year-old colt and now
stands at Three Chimneys. Take Charge Lady was named
Broodmare of the Year shortly thereafter.
"We consigned Take Charge Lady for Jerry Bach, and what she
has gone on to do is pretty neat," said Clay. "You can sell a
high-priced one and maybe they don't produce, but to be
attached to her is special. She has gone on to do such great
things, and having Will Take Charge on the farm as a young
stallion now is wonderful."
Just one year before, Three Chimneys sold GI Breeders' Cup
Distaff winner Spain for $5.3 million. Her weanling Storm Cat
colt followed her into the ring, and he brought $2.4 million,
which at the time was a record price for a weanling at the
Keeneland November sale. Three Chimneys had consigned both
the mare and her son on behalf of the late Prince Ahmed
Salman's The Thoroughbred Corporation.
Another popular race mare, multiple Group I winner Life At
Ten, was consigned by Three Chimneys at the 2011 November
Sale, where she sold for $1.95 million.
Handling dispersals is one of Three Chimneys strong suits, and
just last year, in addition to its normal offerings, Three Chimneys
was entrusted with Regis Farms dispersal. Both of the farm's top
lots came from that group of horses, and as it happens, they
were both Tapit fillies-Royal Obsession, who brought $1.15
million, and Shook Up, who sold for $1.65 million.
"Last year's Regis dispersal was a big package of horses, and it
went really well," said Clay. "We've had some good dispersals
here for clients, and November has been a really good niche for
us as consignors."

NY FOAL CROP HOLDING STEADYBy Mike Kane
New York=s 2016 foal crop will exceed 1,600 for the third
straight year, according to statistics compiled by the New York
State Breeding and Development Fund.
Tracy Egan, the Fund=s executive director, said that her field
team has recorded 1,614 foals that were
dropped in New York and qualify for the
state=s incentive programs. That figure is
just short of the 1,629 foals that the fund
recognized in 2015. Egan said that late
registrations might push the final figure
beyond last year=s total and a fifth straight
season of growth.
Nevertheless, she said the up-to-date foal
count shows that New York=s program
remains strong and vital.
ASince 2011, our foal crop has increased
about 35%,@ Egan said. AIt=s another good year.@
The Breeding and Development Fund=s annual report for 2015
shows that the state=s foal crop plummeted during the
world-wide economic depression that began in 2008 and
reached a nadir of 1,225 in 2011. The recovery coincided with
the overall improvement of the economy and the opening in
late October 2011 of the Resorts World Casino with video
lottery terminals (VLTs) at Aqueduct Racetrack operated by the
New York Racing Association. By law, some revenue from the
casino flows to New York=s Thoroughbred racing and breeding
industries. The Breeding and Development Fund, based in
Schenectady, registers foals and bloodstock, administers the
breeding and racing awards programs and promotes breeding in
the state.
AThe program doesn=t exist in a vacuum,@ Egan said. ANYRA is
offering excellent purses. Let=s face it, the promise of the VLTs
has been fulfilled because there is that money from the VLTs
that NYRA is putting into purses so that New York-breds are
running for really good purses, whether they are New York-sired
or Kentucky-sired.@
In its annual breeding statistics report issued by The Jockey
Club in September, which shows where foals are conceived,
New York=s figure of 940 was down 3.59% from the 975 of 2015.
Egan said that The Jockey Club number synchs with the fund=s
overall figure because typically, about 45% of New York=s annual
foal crop is produced by out-of-state stallions.
According to Egan, some of the pregnant mares bred in other
states and sent to New York to foal New York-breds--the bulk of
that group is from Kentucky--can stay in New York long enough
to be bred to New York-based sires and establish residency.
Egan said that there usually is an influx of pregnant mares
purchased at the November bloodstock sales.
AWhat they are coming here for are the generous breeder
awards and the fact that we have a lot of racing opportunities,@
she said. AIn 2015, NYRA wrote 825 restricted races for New
York-breds. We also have Finger Lakes Racetrack, which offers
bountiful opportunities to race.@
Egan said the fund is nearing the completion of a project that
will make video of every stallion standing in New York available
through an on-line link. The videos will also show picturesque
scenics of the state=s stud farms.
CASINO VOTE STRICKEN FROM ARKANSAS
BALLOT by T.D. Thornton
Opponents of an Arkansas ballot measure to legalize three
new casinos by amending the state=s constitution have won over
the Supreme Court of Arkansas in their effort to have the
question stricken from the Nov. 8 vote.
A state supreme court ruling issued Oct. 13 agreed with
anti-casino petitioners
that the title of Issue 5
was Alegally insufficient@
because one line in the
measure includes a
reference to accepting
wagers on Asporting
events,@ which the justices
interpreted as a violation
of federal law.
One of the petitioners in the suit was a group called
Committee to Protect Arkansas= Values/Stop Casinos Now.
According to the Arkansas Ethics Commission, a lead donor to
that coalition was Oaklawn Park Racing & Gaming, which gave
$59,500 through Aug. 30 to the anti-casino cause. The parent
company of Southland Park Gaming and Racing, which formerly
was a stand-alone greyhound track, gave $50,000.
Although both Oaklawn and Southland are legally allowed to
conduct poker, blackjack, roulette, craps, and electronic gaming,
the Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration
considers neither a Acasino.@ Rather, they are allowed to operate
such forms of betting under 2005 AGames of Skill@ legislation
that is exclusive to the state=s only two pari-mutuel venues.
In wiping the question off the statewide ballot, the concurring
justices cited the federal Professional and Amateur Sports
Protection Act, which, in their interpretation, prohibits Arkansas
or any other state from legalizing sports betting.
Associate Justice Karen Baker wrote in the majority opinion
that, AThe ballot title does not inform the voters that the
Amendment violates federal lawYThe voters are entitled to a
REGIONAL REPORT FRIDAY • OCTOBER 14, 2016
TDN REGIONAL REPORT • PAGE 2 OF 5 • THETDN.COM FRIDAY • OCTOBER 14, 2016
ballot title that is honest, impartial, and intelligible and will give
them a fair understanding of the issues presentedYWe conclude
that the ballot title of the proposed Amendment is insufficient. It
fails to convey to the voter the scope and import of the
proposed measure.@
Because the election is only 3 1/2 weeks away, pro-casino
sponsors have been given a shortened time frame of just five
days to ask for a re-hearing on the matter.
Arkansas election officials have already been ordered to
neither count nor certify any votes on the casino measure.

Gallant) showed an above-average local five-furlong gate breeze
in 1:01 1/5 Oct. 5 and was given a 71-10 chance in this debut.
Breaking alertly, the homebred pressed the pace in close range
from third through a strong :21.85 quarter. Drawing on even
terms three deep passing the five-sixteenths marker, Who=s the
Lady kicked clear at the furlong grounds and held sway late for a

BONDURANT (c, 3, War Front--Ivory Empress {GSP, $189,402},
by Seeking the Gold) graduated at second asking over course
and distance last October and followed that up with a narrow
allowance victory Nov. 20 at Churchill before going on the shelf
for more than nine months. Resurfacing in a sprint Sept. 3 at
Kentucky Downs, the homebred had a bit of a trip and rallied to
be a close fifth. Backed down to 31-10 here from a 15-1 morning
line quote, the bay broke a step slowly and dropped out to run
last of 11 heading around the clubhouse turn. Beginning to
advance three deep going into the far bend, Bondurant swung
six wide at the top of the lane and kicked on strongly once
switching leads in midstretch, sweeping to the front just outside
the sixteenth marker en route to a two-length triumph.
Croninthebarbarian (Stroll) was up late for second. The winner=s
2-year-old half-brother McCraken (Ghostzapper) scored on
debut Oct. 2 at Churchill. Ivory Empress, a half-sister to GISW
Mea Domina (Dance Brightly), is responsible for a yearling colt

ILLUSSION ARTIST (f, 3, Drosselmeyer--Art of Illusion, by Forest
Wildcat) was bet like a sure thing at 11-10 in her Sept. 7 debut
at Indiana Grand and ran to the money with a 7 1/2-length
romp. Let go at a 27-5 in this spot, the dark bay stalked from
third along the rail past a moderate :23.06 quarter. Nudged
along passing the three-furlong pole, she tipped four wide at the
top of the lane and grinded away throughout the stretch to just
get up over Etiquette (Tapit) by a neck in the dying strides. The

BURKE REFLECTS ONRECENT SUCCESS
TDN Q&A by Chris McGrath
Quiet Reflection (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) seeks her third Group
1 prize of the season in the Qipco British Champions' Sprint at
Ascot on Saturday. Only beaten twice in nine career starts, she is
the latest bargain buy to consolidate a remarkable revival in the
career of her trainer Karl Burke.
Suspended for 12 months in 2009--he admitted naivete over
new rules, having talked horses with a banned former patron
and business associate--Burke was obliged to hand over his
licence to his wife Elaine.
Since the end of that ban, their historic Spigot Lodge stable in
North Yorkshire has produced a Derby runner-up in Libertarian
(GB) (New Approach {Ire}), a dual Group 1 winner in Odeliz (Ire)
(Falco) and now an outstanding sprinter in Quiet Reflection. All
were very cheaply bought--at 40,000gns, i22,000 and ,44,000,
respectively--and Burke has been busy at Tattersalls this week
trying to unearth the next gem. Nonetheless, he took time out
for a chat with TDN earlier this week.

MARES MAY HOLD SWAY IN CAULFIELD CUP While only two mares have won the G1 BMW Caulfield Cup in
the past 15 years, Saturday A$3-million staying contest could
provide another with Ciaron Maher=s G1 Victorian Oaks winner
Jameka (Aus) (Myboycharlie {Ire}) the current favourite, while
Darren Weir=s multiple stakes winner Real Love (Aus) (Desert
King {Ire}) looks to have conditions to suit for adding the prize to
her already impressive record.
A winner two starts back in the G3 Naturalism S. at Caulfield,
Jameka progressed to finish second to leading G1 Cox Plate
contender Hartnell (GB) (Authorized {Ire}) in the G1 Turnbull S.
next time out with a gap of over three lengths to Tally (Aus)
(Street Cry {Ire}) in third. At seven runs of 2000 metres or
further, the lightly raced mare has never finished further back
than fourth, highlighted by Group 1 placings at every attempt.

WITH KARL BURKETDN: How do you juggle your different tasks at this time of
year, being so busy here at the sales even while preparing a
Group 1 favourite for the weekend?
KB: Yes, it's a hectic time. I'm here at the sales now but we're
driving back tonight to see Quiet Reflection work and then we'll
be heading back in the morning. But for me this is the most
important part of the job--so much so that it can get a bit
frustrating when the phone doesn't stop ringing. I like to be
totally focused here, I can get a bit blinkered. Obviously there
are still horses at home with owners who need to know what's
going on. But what I'm doing here is so very important. Because
it doesn't matter how good a trainer you are, if you don't buy
the right horses you're not going to have winners.
TDN: Well, you've obviously been buying the right horses,
judging from this series of horses so outperforming their price
tags. Would you say that upgrading the value of such horses
has become the brand for your career rebuild?
KB: I'd always bought cheapish horses but always tried to sell
most of them on. Over the last four or five years luckily we've
been in financial position to keep a leg here, a half there, and it's
worked out when we've sold them on. If anything, we've almost
become a victim of our own success. Now a lot of owners are
wanting us to keep a
stake--and obviously that
can soon add up to an
awful lot. We've always
got to keep trading some
in. We bought a filly here
last year for seven-grand
and kept a half. She won
first time out, and we got
a really good deal from
America. But that all goes
straight back in: filling the holes left by the ones that don't make
it, while hopefully leaving a little left over to re-invest in the
structure of the business. Everything we've been able to do is on
the back of the sale of horses. Just this year, another barn has
gone up and we've also spent a quarter-million pounds
converting some lads' accommodation. So yes, it's all a big
investment. But we've a great lifestyle, we live well without
having loads of money in the bank, and hopefully one day--when
we wind down--we'll be able to reap the rewards. Cont. p3

TDN: In trying to keep that balance right, presumably there are
times when it can all get a bit precarious?
KB: For sure. That's there all the time. But I try to be fairly strict.
Every month I sit down and list everything we own, the
percentage in each horse, and set a fire-sale value if I had to
walk away quick. Even that valuation gets pretty frightening, as
it adds up. But we've made it work for three or four years, and if
we can make it work for another three or four we'll be alright.
TDN: You mention being a victim of your success. Is there an
element of that also in being associated only with cheaper
horses?
KB: Of course, the guys who are more established than us have
the owner-breeders who can
afford to go to the Galileos or
Dubawis and the rest. Every
trainer is trying to break into that
level. But I'm very satisfied with
what we've got, and it's just a
matter of keeping it going and
showing the kind of job we can do
so that eventually, hopefully, we
might be sent those well-bred
Derby contenders.
TDN: It was a less obvious Derby
type who got you rolling again, in
2013 runner-up Libertarian [albeit strictly Elaine still retained
the licence then]. Is it right that you were only able to get your
hands on him after he breezed "like a snake"!?
KB: Yes, he was bought here at the Breeze-Ups for ,40,000 by
Lars Kelp and myself and Hubert Strecker, who was the owner.
We sold him [to Godolphin] for a bit more than that! It was a sad
day to see him go, because he was a bit of a character.
Obviously we all look at our own horses through rose-tinted
spectacles, to a degree, but I do think that the Derby could have
been run 10 different ways than the way it was and we'd have
probably won nine. We just needed that strong pace. Typical
Aidan [O'Brien]...Everybody thought they would go a fast pace
to take on Dawn Approach (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}), and he
did the opposite and went steady. It didn't suit us, and we were
always three or four lengths farther back than ideal as a result. It
wasn't anybody's fault. When the jockey wanted to go forward,
he would have had to pull too wide. But it was still a great run.
Godolphin were good enough to leave him with us for the Irish
Derby but the ground was very quick and, hand on my heart, I'd
say if Hubert still owned him I don't think he'd have gone there.
He was a little bit quirky at home and had shown signs that
he'd had enough for the time being. I do think he might have
won the St Leger for us [he finished fourth] but that intends no
slight whatsoever on the Godolphin operation. I did say to
Simon Crisford and John Ferguson at the time that I didn't think
he was a Newmarket horse. He was quirky, as I say, and we'd
got to the best side of him.
TDN: Quiet Reflection was another you found at the
Breeze-Ups. It was the page that drew you to her first, wasn't
it?
KB: Yes, I'd trained the granddam Clare Hills (Ire) (Orpen) to win
the Hilary Needler and finish fourth in the Queen Mary when it
was run at York. Probably at the time she was the best horse
we'd had. So that attracted me, and then
we'd had Toocoolforschool (Ire)
(Showcasing {GB}) from the sire's first
crop and won the Mill Reef with him. So I
was keen to look through everything by
Showcasing (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), and
when I saw that cross I was very
interested. Yes, she breezed nicely
enough, but it wasn't over-convincing and
Tom Whitehead, who sold her, knew that
he didn't have too many people on her. To
be fair to Tom, he said he'd keep a leg if
we bought her and that obviously helped.
And the rest is history.
TDN: Even given the changes in the sprint programme that
have helped bring the 3-year-olds through, it is very rare to
find such a consistent achiever in this discipline. How is she
shaping up for Saturday?
KB: We have had a bit of coughing in the yard but I think we're
through the worst and, touch wood, she hasn't been affected.
Please God she runs the same race on Saturday as she has all
year because if she does, she'll be the one they've got to beat.
And if she does, it will be great credit to the team at home
because we've kept her on the go all year. She was in work
before Christmas, in fact, because we knew we had the G3 Prix
Sigy at Chantilly in April as her starting point and didn't want to
send her over there half-cooked. She had a short break after the
July Cup, but that's all she's had. Third to Limato (Ire) (Tagula
{Ire}) there was a great run on ground we know is plenty fast
enough for her and, though I wouldn't have said she'd given any
sign of reaching the end of her tether, Dougie [Costello, jockey]
did say coming in that even going down he felt she wasn't quite
herself, that she felt a little jaded.
Karl Burke & Libertarian | Racing Post
TDN EUROPE/INTERNATIONAL • PAGE 4 OF 11 • THETDN.COM FRIDAY • 14 OCTOBER, 2016
So all credit to the filly, she's so tough she still went out there
and ran her heart out. And that's what she is all about. If she's
95% on Saturday she'll try 110%. She's a beautiful filly to deal
with, as kind as you'll ever get in the box, and just goes about
her business the same every time, whatever you ask of her.
TDN: In his days as a jump jockey, Dougie can never have
imagined that he would ever take a pull halfway through a
Group 1 sprint, the way he did at Haydock. His role is a nice
part of this story, isn't it?
KB: Yeah, it is. Dougie's a great guy
and we were struggling for
consistency with riders, especially
with maidens and 2-year-olds
coming though towards the better
races, when Jim Crowley or Danny
Tudhope would have to be jumping
off to ride for their stables. That
was getting frustrating and while
Dougie wasn't the first we asked,
he was the first to commit to the
yard and it's worked out really well.
TDN: After Libertarian, Odeliz also
made an important contribution to
your rebuild, didn't she?
KB: We bought her as a yearling at Arqana October. She was
huge, and I think that's why we got her so cheap because she
was a lovely specimen otherwise. That kind of size will put a lot
of people off. But we gave her a lot of time and she didn't run at
two. Actually I did have her in the French Guineas through the
winter. I remember our French travelling head lad sitting on her
and saying, "This is all right, this will win a French claimer no
problem." I didn't like to say that I'd just entered her in the
French Guineas. We owned 50% of her and sold her to stay in
the yard to Barbara Keller. That was a great deal for us--and
turned out to be a fantastic one for Barbara as well. [Odeliz was
sold privately after failing to reach her reserve at 950,000gns at
Tattersalls last December.]
TDN: Not having been brought up in the game, how do you
account for this priceless knack for spotting value prospects at
the sales?
KB: The basics can be learned, but after that you have to
develop your own feel. I can remember coming home with some
tremendous mistakes when I first started.
There's nothing like putting your own money down and getting
it wrong to sharpen you up next time. I was coming to the sales
all the time even when I was riding, 30 years ago: I always loved
the whole scene. Sometimes I think I'd rather be a bloodstock
agent, because it's not a bad lifestyle. A lot of good judges say
they just buy the horse [i.e. ignore the page] and that's fair
enough, but I do love looking through the catalogue and when I
see a cross I'll have a vision in my mind--whether it's going to
look a speedy type, or whatever--even before I see the horse.
Sometimes it doesn't work out but every now and then you'll
come across an unusual cross and think to yourself: "Well, that
might just work," And so you see the
animal, though it doesn't look obvious
on paper and a lot of people won't
look at it. I do think that's quite often
how we've pinched some.
TDN: Though clearly most unwelcome
at the time, the way things have
turned out can you see any benefits
from your enforced career break?
KB: Definitely, in hindsight. After the
initial shock of being banned, after
those first few weeks I'd be lying if I
said I didn't enjoy the rest of the year
off, with all the traveling I did: Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore,
Dubai. It was Elaine and the girls who bore the brunt of it, who
had to keep the show on the road. For me, even just behind the
wheel of the car I wasn't rushing any more, my whole
perception changed, I wasn't cursing and tearing around. So
when I started back training, I wasn't pushing the horses. I
wasn't thinking: "Oh no, this race isn't filling, I've got to have a
runner." Sometimes I notice myself slipping back a bit, but the
break did make me better at sitting back a little. We'd got up to
virtually 100 horses before, but certainly not to the same depth
and quality we have now. When I got banned, within a month
we were down to 25 to 30 horses and I'd say maybe 18 of them
were ours. So all credit to the girls, as I say. They were
determined to keep it going. They were able to keep the nucleus
of staff on, as well--most of whom are still with us now. But if
you said to me when the ban finished that I'd be in the position
we are now, I'd have said there's no chance of that. And I think
most other people would have said the same.

CHAMPION ATTRACTS 11; 2015 TRIFECTA
DRAWN WIDEST Saturday=s G1 Qipco Champion S. has attracted a field of 11
following Thursday=s declaration stage for this year=s renewal of
Ascot=s 10-furlong
contest. Last year=s hero,
Fascinating Rock (Ire)
(Fastnet Rock {Aus})--who
was forced out of his
engagement in Chantilly=s
G1 Prix de l=Arc de

month--has been
allocated 10, while last
year=s second Found (Ire)
(Galileo {Ire}), who overcame a wide gate to claim Arc glory in
her most recent go, is drawn widest of all. Her stablemate and
G1 Epsom Derby runner-up US Army Ranger (Ire) (Galileo {Ire})
is drawn in two, the pair seeking to provide Aidan O=Brien with a
belated first win.
Last term=s third Jack Hobbs (GB) (Halling) bids to get back in
the groove, having been pulled up in Newmarket=s Apr. 30 G2
Jockey Club S. in his only subsequent start, and is alongside his
old foes in nine. Almanzor (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}), who
annexed a stellar edition of last month=s G1 Irish Champion S. in
impressive fashion, bids to cement his position at the head of

BOOK THREE RECORD FOR KODIAC COLTBy Emma Berry
Smashing the record price for Book 3, Ballyhimikin Stud's
smart son of Kodiac (Ire) (lot 1549) was the highlight of a
buoyant first session of the sale, with Charlie Gordon-Watson
out-trumping Richard Brown at 200,000gns.
Out of an unraced sister to the late Danetime (Ire) (Danehill),
the late April colt represented a decent pinhooking success for
James and Charlotte Hanly, who bought him at Goffs for
i25,000.
"He's a beautiful colt who did really well. We just loved his
pedigree, there's a lot of early speed and hopefully he'll be one
for the Tattersalls sale race this time next year," said James
Hanly.
"Edmond Mahony asked us to support this sale as Tattersalls
put up a lot of money and make a big effort for that race, so we
hand-picked this colt to come here. We wish the buyer lots of
luck with him."
That buyer is as-yet unnamed, but Gordon-Watson confirmed
that he is for a long-standing owner with Ed Dunlop. He added,
"He's a very good-moving horse from a very good farm and he
stood out a mile. Ed Dunlop will train him. We also bought Red
Cadeaux at this sale--he cost 55,000gns and ended up winning
,5-million."
With four horses sold for 271,000gns, Ballyhimikin Stud ended
day one as leading
vendor by average,
while
Gordon-Watson was
the leading buyer,
with four bought for
339,000gns,
including the
National Stud's
first-crop son of
Havana Gold (GB)
(lot 1374) for
60,000gns on behalf of Chinese owner Dr Johnny Hon.
Despite the fact that 66 fewer horses were offered and 69
fewer sold than on the same day last year, turnover wasn't far
short of last year's tally at 4,447,000gns (-2%), and both the
average and median improved dramatically at 22,689gns (+32%)
and 17,000gns (+26%). The clearance rate was down from 84%
to 79%.
Equaling last year's top price and the only other six-figure lot
of the day was a colt by Sir Percy (GB), who sold to trainer Dean
Ivory for 115,000gns with Gordon-Watson this time forced to
play underbidder. Lot 1514, a half-brother to one of Harbour
Watch (Ire)'s first winners, Miss Sugars (GB), was bred by
Chippenham Lodge Stud and offered for sale through the
Castlebridge Consignment. He will replace another son of Sir
Percy at Ivory's yard, as his 105-rated dual juvenile winner Twin
Sails (GB) is heading towards the Horses-in-Training Sale later
this month.
"My father found him and will take a share in him," said Ivory,
whose father Ken was also a trainer. "He's a really good-topped
colt by a solid sire who walks well. We're delighted with him."
The colt's Australian-bred dam Three Sugars (Aus) (Starcraft
{NZ}) is a winning daughter of GIII Natalma S. winner Hoh Dear
(Ire) (Sri Pekan) from the family of GI Northern Dancer Turf S.
winner Wigmore Hall (Ire) (High Chaparral {Ire}).
Kodiac was also responsible for another couple of the more
expensive yearlings of the day, with Acorn Stud's colt out of
listed winner Kindling (GB) (Dr Fong) (lot 1388) being the top
selection for agent Jill Lamb at 75,000gns. Charlie Hills will train
the colt for Julie Martin.

"We've been trying to buy all week and found things too
strong, but we are delighted to have bought this colt. He looks
strong, has a lot of quality and one we can get on with," said
Lamb. "I've been associated with a couple of good Kodiac colts
and this horse looks quite similar--let's hope he is as fast."
Four lots previously, Rathasker Stud's Kodiac filly (lot 1384)
was claimed by Willie Browne for 70,000gns, having been
bought in the same ring last December for 15,000gns by
Maurice Burns and Peter Kelly.
"She looked like a real 2-year-old--a proper one for the sales
race. A lot of people liked her and those ones are always easy to
sell," said Burns.
The filly is the first foal of the 86-rated juvenile winner Katevan
(Ire) (Heliostatic {Ire}), a daughter of the G3 Prix de
Psyche-placed Lesgor (Irish River {Fr}).
The Iffraaj (GB) yearlings sold well through Book 2 and one of
his daughters became the co-top price for a filly in Book 3 after
Darren Bunyan went to 70,000gns for lot 1448. The chesnut filly
is out of a Bertolini unraced half-sister to former champion
2-year-old Seazun (Ire) (Zieten), winner of the G1 Cheveley Park
Stud S.
The trainer said, "She is for the Straight For Victory syndicate,
which has been lucky. She is a lovely filly, a stand-out for me
today. She ticks all the boxes and has a great pedigree."
The members of the Straight To Victory syndicate enjoyed
Group 3 success on The Curragh in August when Hit The Bid (GB)
(Exceed And Excel {Aus}) won the Curragh S.
Few trainers would peruse the stock of Thewayyouare
yearlings as keenly as Jamie Osborne, who trained the GI
Breeders' Cup Classic runner-up Toast Of New York by the same
sire, and he added another by him to his stable on Thursday.
Lot 1408, sold by Genesis Green Stud, is a half-brother to the
G3 Round Tower S. winner and young stallion Cappella
Sansevero (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) and was bought through
agent Federico Barberini for 60,000gns.
Overbury Stud's Delegator has made an eye-catching start with
his first runners this year--his current tally standing at seven
winners from 20 runners, including G3 Firth Of Clyde S. winner
Delectation (GB)--and a colt from his second crop (lot 1365)
provided an early highlight during the first day of Book 3 when
selling for 58,000gns to Richard Brown of Blandford Bloodstock.
Shrewd pinhookers Peter Kavanagh and Michael Downey came
up trumps again, having bought the son of the Pursuit Of Love
(GB) mare Heartsease (GB) for just 5,500gns at the December
Foal Sale.
"We thought Delegator was a little under the radar when we
bought him," said Kavanagh, who consigned the colt through his
Kildaragh Stud. "He was always a good racehorse in a vintage
generation, and he's a good-looking horse who gets nice stock.
We've supported him every year with a handful of mares. He's
done well with his first runners and people are waking up to him
now as he has a lovely pedigree. This colt had a lovely attitude
and a great swing to him and plenty of people seemed to like
him."
Brown, who couldn't name his client, agreed with the vendor's
assessment, adding, "The stallion has had some decent winners
from not many runners and he was a classy racehorse himself,
finishing second to Sea The Stars (Ire) in the 2000 Guineas. He
gets a good-looking horse and I really liked this colt."
Book 3 continues at 10am today and is followed directly by the
84-lot Book 4, which concludes the October Yearling Sale.Peter Kelly and Maurice Burns | Tattersalls

FINAL SHOT Friday=s G2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte comes late in the
season for the 2-year-old sprinters, but it offers the last chance
for the category members to achieve something notable before
the curtain comes down. It is a shame that the unbeaten G3
Firth of Clyde S. winner Delectation (GB) (Delegator {GB}) is a
non-runner, but the representation from Britain remains
typically strong as that country seeks a sixth renewal since 2005.
Ibrahim Araci=s Koropick (Ire) (Kodiac {Ire}) boasts the best form
among them, having
followed a second to
The Last Lion (Ire)
(Choisir {Aus}) in the
G3 Sirenia S. over
this trip on
Kempton=s Polytrack
Sept. 3 with a fifth in
the G1 Middle Park
S. also at this
distance three weeks
later. Charlie
Fellowes sends Moonlit Show (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) into
action on the back of her win in the Listed Blenheim S. at this
trip at Fairyhouse Sept. 27 and he said, AShe=s in good form and
has definitely come on for it. I=ve just put a pair of cheekpieces
on, though. I just felt in the last half a furlong she was idling and
pricking her ears. There=s good and bad points to that. It=s good
because it tells me she had a fair bit left in the locker, but it=s
bad because if anything is close enough to take advantage if she
does it again, she=ll be caught out.@
Pick of the French could be Sun Bloodstock=s acquisition Sans
Equivoque (Fr) (Stormy River {Fr}), who beat the subsequent G1
Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere fifth King of Spades (Fr) (Foxwedge
{Aus}) by a head in the G3 Prix Eclipse over this course and
distance Sept. 21.

GMAASH (GB) (f, 2, Dubawi {Ire}--Maids Causeway {Ire}
{G1SW-Eng, $644,496}, by Giant=s Causeway), who was worn
down late when fourth on debut over an extended seven
furlongs at Wolverhampton Sept. 27, crept to the lead from her
high draw by halfway. Perhaps idling when in the clear with a
furlong to race, the 6-5 favourite was fortunate the line came in
time to hold on by a short head from Desert Mark (Ire) (Approve
{Ire}). Maids Causeway, who captured the G1 Coronation S.
staged at York after finishing runner-up in the G1 1000 Guineas,
has a yearling colt by New Approach (Ire) and a filly foal by
Frankel (GB) to come. She hails from the distinguished
Wildenstein family of top-level performers Verveine (Lear Fan),
Vallee Enchantee (Ire) (Peintre Celebre), Volga (Ire) (Caerleon),

Dansili {GB}), a 150,000gns TATFOA foal and 450,000gns
TATOCT yearling, had been a well-beaten third over this course
and distance Sept. 11 and showed the benefit of experience to
gain a prominent position in second early. Earning the lead
approaching the furlong pole, the 5-1 shot stayed on to secure a
half-length verdict over Bolt Phantom (Exchange Rate). Thaaqib
is the first foal out of a granddaughter of My Emma (GB) (Marju
{Ire}), a dual highweight who was successful in the G1 Prix
Vermeille and G1 Yorkshire Oaks and is a half-sister to the G1 St
Leger and G1 Gold Cup-wining sire Classic Cliche (Ire). From the
extended family of this year=s Gold Cup runner-up and dual G3
Sagaro S. winner Mizzou (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), she also has a

at Newcastle last time Sept. 2 and took a keen grip in a close-up

Sent to the front with 1 1/2 furlongs remaining, the 9-4 joint
favourite held on to win by a neck from Cliffs of Capri (GB)
(Canford Cliffs {Ire}). The winner is a half-sister to the G1 Raul y
Raul E. Chevalier winner El Expresivo (Arg) and fellow sire
Epsilon (Arg), and more importantly to Rio de la Plata. He was
successful in the G2 Vintage S. and G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere at
two and went on to place in the G1 Sussex S., G1 Poule d=Essai
des Poulains and G1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp twice as well
as winning Italy=s G1 Premio Vittorio di Capua and G1 Premio

CHABELITA (GB) (f, 2, Lawman {Fr}--Chabelle {GB}, by Shirocco
{Ger}), only ninth on debut over seven furlongs at Mont-de-
Marsan Sept. 7, started at 6-1 and broke best to lead for the
initial 100 metres before being headed off by Galinka (Fr)
(Soldier Hollow {GB}). Outstaying that rival after passing her
with a furlong remaining, the i150,000 ARQAUG yearling
asserted to win by two lengths. Chabelle, who is a half to the G1
Vincent O=Brien National S. runner-up Chabal (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}),
was represented well by her first foal after More Than a Dream
(Ire) (Halling) finished second in the G3 Prix Noailles. Talented
members of this dynasty include Spin Cycle (Ire) (Exceed and
Excel {Aus}), who was second in the G2 Norfolk S.; San Sicharia
(Ire) (Daggers Drawn), who captured the G3 Chartwell Fillies= S.
and, further back, the dual Group 1 winner Vahorimix (Fr)

favourite kept on resolutely under stretch-long cajoling to deny

Mares May Hold Sway In Caulfield Cup cont. from p1
With three runners in the race, Jameka looks the leading
chance for the Maher stable, who will also saddle up Group
1-winning mare Set
Square (Aus) (Reset
{Aus}) and last start
Group 3-placed
Pemberley (NZ) (Darci
Brahma {NZ}).
"This race is one of the
big three that we all
dream of as a trainer to
win," Maher said.
"Hopefully one of my
three can do the job."
Eight-time stakes winner Real Love produced an impressive
three-length victory in the G3 JRA Cup on Sept. 30, and with two
stakes wins at the trip plus a significant drop in weight, last
season=s champion trainer Darren Weir could taste victory in his
first Caulfield Cup come Saturday.
The race will see four international runners having their first
Australian starts, with Sir Isaac Newton (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) from
the Aidan O=Brien camp and the Lee and Anthony
Freedman-trained Exospheric (GB) (Beat Hollow {GB})--
previously finishing fourth and fifth, respectively, to Postponed
(Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the G1 Juddmonte International--
highlighting their class.
One of two entries for the team, Godolphin=s Scottish (Ire)
(Teofilo {Ire}) could be the one to watch of the international
contingency. A win over Exospheric and a second to Highland
Reel (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) at his most recent 2400 metre start
could see the Charlie Appleby-trained 5-year-old give Kerrin
McEvoy and Sheikh Mohammed their second victory in the race
since All The Good (Ire) in 2008.
AI=m delighted with barrier seven; it gives Kerrin plenty of
options,@ stated Appleby. AIf we can get a nice clear run into the
race we are hopeful of being very competitive.@
In search of his first Caulfield Cup victory, Chris Waller will
saddle up G2 Avondale Gold Cup winner Sacred Master (NZ)
(Mastercraftsman {Ire}). Recording very good finishing sectionals
last time out in the G1 Metropolitan H. when fourth, jockey
Tommy Berry will be able to take up a good position from
barrier eight in search of his first win in the time-honoured race.
While getting on in age, last start Metropolitan H. winner Sir
John Hawkwood (Ire) (Sir Percy {GB}) should prove an
interesting runner for trainer John Thompson from barrier five.
With three wins and two second-placed performances from
seven attempts at the 2400 metres, including his impressive last
start win, The Waratah Thoroughbreds-owned gelding is one to
watch at odds.
