Kick off the IDABO Education Institute by attending this FREE workshop which is designed for industry professionals such as Engineers, Architects, Building Jurisdictions, Contractors, Builders and others interested in learning about proper connections. De-tailed information will be provided on Simpson Strong-Tie products for wood framed construction. During this workshop, attendees will follow along with a computer presentation, participate in class dis-cussion, binder and catalog review. Product samples may also be used to provide a hands-on learning experience.

Tuesday, January 25th 7:00am- Continental Breakfast 8:00am- Registration 8:30am-4:30pm Legal Aspects (1 day, .6 CEU's- Steve Thomas, CCC) The first part of this course provides individuals with guidelines for administering the legal aspects of code enforcement, prosecution and maintenance. Topics will include historical results of ignoring regulations, interpretation and application of pertinent laws and theories of legal liability. The second part will discuss ethics, with a discussion of “real world” issues that affect the perception and performance of the code enforcement staff.

IBC Significant Changes (1 day, .6 CEU’s- Doug Thornburg, ICC)

This seminar introduces participants to the major changes from the 2006 IBC to the 2009 IBC with an emphasis of the changes con-tained in Chapters 1-11. The lecture and activity format allows participants to discuss the changes, reasons for the changes, and answer knowledge review questions. Information presented will allow participants to apply these new code requirements to design, plan review, and/or inspection.

8:30am-Noon 2009 IMC Update (1/2 day, .3 CEU’s- Sam Dardano, ICC) This seminar provides an overview of the changes from the 2006 to the 2009 IMC. It identifies changes in organization and code requirements and the applicability of these requirements to design, plan review and inspection.

This seminar provides an overview of the changes from the 2006 IFGC to the 2009 IFGC. It also identifies changes in organization and code requirements and the applicability of these requirements to design, plan review and inspection.

8:00am- Registration and Vendor Visits Resume 8:30 am– 4:30pm IRC Significant Changes (1 day, .6 CEU’s- Steve Thomas, CCC) Review the change from the 2006 edition to the 2009 edition of the International Residential Code. The background behind many of the changes will be discussed to provide the participant with an understanding of the intent of the changes and how to apply it to their everyday work. Discussion covered in this class will also include the code change process.

Advanced Means of Egress (1 day, .6 CEU’s- Doug Thornburg, ICC) This seminar provides participants with the requirements for means of egress. Plans for a 4-story commercial building are provided to allow participants the opportunity to practice problem solving related to each egress issue.

10:30am– 10:45 am Vendor Visits/ Break Noon– 1:00 pm Lunch 1:00pm– 4:30 pm Interior Finish/Virtual Lab (1/2 day, .3 CEU’s—Bob Eugene, UL Lab) This presentation provides an in-depth examination of the Stan-dard’s based test methods applicable to the interior finishes addressed in Chapter 8 of the IBC. In addition, the class offers an overview of how to use UL’s On-line Certifications Data-base. This course looks at several test standards referenced by the International Codes and lets you see the tests as if you were in the lab itself. 2:30pm– 2:45 am Break and Vendor Visits End Refresh with cookies and soda or water. 8:30am-4:30pm Multi-Family Construction (1 day, .6 CEU’s- Steve Thomas, CCC)

Overview of the requirements for multi- family dwellings in the International Building Code. Type V-A construction may be the most difficult type of construction to build a structure by. This seminar discusses the design, construction and inspection of Group R-2 occupancies including, building planning, fire-resistive rated construction, fire protection requirements and means of egress requirements.

IBC Structural Fundamentals (non-energy) (1 day, .6 CEU’s– John Henry, ICC) Examines structural provision requirements of the IBC. Ad-dresses major elements including structural design, structural tests and special inspections, foundations, concrete, masonry, steel and wood.

Over the Counter Plan Review (1 day, .6 CEU’s- John Smith, City of Lewsiton) This class will be geared towards permit techs and review some of the duties and tasks needed to provide effective front counter services.

STI Fire Stop (1/2 day, .3 CEU’s Instructor: Brandon Kaplan, Mountain States Specified Technologies, Inc Brought back by popular demand! Attend this session to learn what’s new.

Residential Air Balancing (1/2 day, .03 CEU’s– Russel Goyen, Chief Plmg/Mech Inspec-tor, City of Idaho Falls and Les Tibbals, Energy Specialist, City of Nampa This will be a hands-on session using a scaled-down model of actual ductwork along with the instruments commonly used for air balancing. Air balancing is the final, and in some ways, the most important step in assuring HVAC home comfort. The class will demonstrate the effects resulting from proper/improper duct sizing and design along with fitting selection, and how to use the load calculation and duct design information to ensure that the correct amount of conditioned air is delivered to each room or space in the home. This class will have great practical value for contractors and code officials alike.

IRC Wall Bracing (1/2 day, .3 CEU’s– Steve Thomas, CCC) Focuses solely on the prescriptive wall bracing methods in the IRC. Topics will include the code implementation of wall brac-ing with wood panels, gypsum panels, fiberboard panels, alter-nate braced panels, continuous wall sheathing and portal frames. Example problems will be provided and discussed.

Some of the SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES

STEPHEN L. THOMAS, CBO President, Colorado Code Consulting, LLC Mr. Thomas has twenty-seven years experience in working with building codes including plan reviews, inspections and administration. His firm provides building code consulting services for governmental agencies and architectural firms, as well as educational seminars on building codes. Start-ing a building code-consulting firm in 1999, he now serves as the contract Building Official for Cherry Hills Village, Colorado. Mr. Thomas has served on several ICBO com-mittees and currently serves as the Vice Chairman of the ICC Means of Egress Code Development Committee. He also is a member of the International Building Code Inter-pretations Committee for ICC. He has presented building code classes for the last 20 years and provides an interest-ing and engaging look at building codes.

DOUG THORNBERG Douglas W. Thornburg, AIA, CBO, is currently Director of Product Development for ICC. In this role, he provides leadership in technical development and positioning of sup-port products for ICC. In addition, Doug develops and re-views technical products, reference books and resource materials relating to the I-Codes and their supporting docu-ments. Other functions include serving as a technical ex-pert on jointly developed products with other associations, acting as a technical liaison with outside authors/contractors, and providing oversight of quality control and technical peer review panels for ICC products. He also instructs seminars nationally on the International Building Code. Formerly Vice-President of Education for the International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO), Doug was pre-sented with ICBO´s prestigious A.J. (Jack) Lund Award in 1996. A graduate of Kansas State University and a regis-tered architect, Doug has over 25 years of experience in building code training and administration, including ten years with ICBO, and five years with the City of Wichita, Kansas. He is certified as a building official, building in-spector and plans examiner, as well as in seven other code enforcement categories. JOHN HENRY John R. Henry, P.E., is a Principal Staff Engineer with the International Code Council (ICC) Business & Product De-velopment Department where he is responsible for re-search and development of technical resources pertaining to the structural engineering provisions of the code. Mr. Henry has developed and presented technical seminars on the structural provisions of the Uniform Building Code (UBC) and the International Building Code (IBC). He has a broad range of experience including structural design in private practice, plan check engineering with building de-partment jurisdictions, and over 8 years of

experience as an ICC Staff Engineer. Mr. Henry gradu-ated with honors with a Bachelor of Science in Civil En-gineering from California State University, Sacramento. He is a Registered Civil Engineer in California, a mem-ber of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the Structural Engineers Association of California (SEAOC). Mr. Henry is an ICC Certified Plans Exam-iner. SAM DARDANO Sam has served a five year term as the President of the Colorado Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Offi-cials. He teaches entry to advanced level mechanical courses. His career includes 30 years in the HVAC trades, with 11 years as a Mechanical Plans Examiner and the Chief Mechanical Inspector for the City of Boul-der, Colorado. He is a past member of the IMC Inter-pretation Committee and a present member of the IMC Code Change Committee.

BOB EUGENE Bob Eugene joined Underwriters Laboratories Inc. in 1999 and currently works as Senior Staff Engineer. Prior to that, Bob spent 22 years in the City of Spokane Build-ing Department, with the last nine as the Building Offi-cial. He has served on many ICBO committees including the Fire & Life Safety, Means of Egress Review and Occupancies Review committees. He also served on the ICC Fire Safety and General Committees and has

When new products appear on a job site, building officials are inclined to ask hard questions. This trade show provides you with an opportunity to meet with building officials, architects, engineers and other building professionals and familiarize them with your products, before the design, plan review, or inspection begins.

Sponsored by the Idaho Association of Building Officials, the trade show will be held January 25th & 26th, 2011, in conjunction with the Education Institute. This in a annual training event attended by over 200 building officials, designers and pro-fessionals each year. This year we will continue the Tradeshow Reception where you will gain full attendee exposure for an hour and a half while en-joying hors devourers, drinks and entertainment!

ASSIGNMENT OF SPACE Booth space will be assigned at the discretion of IDABO. IDABO will attempt to assign requested spaces. The decision of IDABO with respect to booth space is final. Exhibitors will receive an e-mail confirmation with its booth assignment. Booths are 8x10, and include one table and 2 chairs. Electricity is available. Exhibit space will be locked nightly. Conference meals will be served in the vendor lobby.

EXHIBITOR BOOTH PERSONNEL Each non-sponsor exhibiting company is entitled to two complimentary delegate registrations. If your company requires more booth personnel passes than provided, you must purchase additional delegate registrations. Please list all delegates on the Sponsorship/Vendor Booth contract on the next page and supply an email for each. Badges must be picked up onsite at the IDABO registration desk. Badges MUST be worn at all times for admission to the tradeshow. As a courtesy to Institute attendees and fellow exhibitors, all exhibiting companies are expected to open their booths promptly and staff them through required times.

DISMANTLING OF DISPLAYS The deadline for removal of all materials from the exhibit hall is 5 pm on Wednesday, January 26th. It is the re-sponsibility of each exhibitor to have materials packed, identified and cleared by the appropriate time. IDABO reserves the right– with no liability for damage, spoilage or loss– to dismantle, dispose of, or store or clear from the premises any display material, goods, property or merchandise of an exhibitor who has failed to comply with the removal requirements.
