Baker High school. During the fourth quarter, our staff will be working with students to register for classes for the 2016-2017 school year, and confirming graduation requirements and post- secondary plans for our seniors. One of our primary efforts as a comprehensive high school is to give our parents and students all of the tools they need to make great decisions that will pay off for the student in their future careers. Communication throughout the entire school year is an important tool for the success of our students. In a school as large and diverse as ours, it is challenging for students, teachers, and administrators to stay abreast of the many activities and opportunities that routinely take place throughout the school. For a lucky few, your teen will rush home with all the news of the day, sharing information, reviewing grades and assignments, and notifying you of upcoming events. The rest of you often have to work harder to find out what’s happening and what’s important. In case you haven’t already been doing so, here are some reminders that can assist you in staying informed: Please remember to refer to the school website often for updated information and end of year dates. Review the interim grade notices and quarterly report cards that we send and mail. Look for club, organization, and event flyers. Scan the local newspapers for items about our students and our school. The District’s Code of Conduct and the Student Planner are both excellent sources for fundamental information. Parent Link messages are sent out periodically with important information for students and parents. Most importantly, call or e-mail us when you have questions or concerns! We look forward to hearing from you and discussing your student. This has been an incredible school year! I am very proud of our student and staff accomplishments and appreciate the support of our community. I am confident that our tradition of excellence will continue. Ida. S. Baker High School is an outstanding school and I am honored every day to work with dedicated and talented staff members and students. The opportunity to serve as an assistant principal in a school that I love is an amazing feeling. Go Bulldogs! James Iandoli Assistant Principal

Literacy NewsWHAT ARE TEACHERS READING? The Teacher Book Club recently read THE TURNER HOUSE by Angela Flournoy. It is set in Detroit and tells the story of the Turner family who lived in their house over 50 years. All 13 children are “called home to decide its fate and reckon with their pasts”. It’s as much a history of Detroit as it is a revelation of family dynamics. Not only does a book club model the importance of literacy in our everyday lives, it also reinforces the social aspect of reading a good book.

Foreign Language Fair On Saturday, March 12th, many of our French, ASL, and Spanish students competed in the Lee County Foreign Language Fair. Students competed in the following categories: Quiz Bowl, Entertainment, Video, Declamation, and Art. The French Quiz Bowl team consisting of Starr Warner, Richard Taylor, Amanda Kovacs, Alysen Carrasco, Mauricio Amaro, and Chloe Walker, tied for 2nd place. The following students rated at the highest Superior level: Jennifer Sleiman and John Billy St Fort. Rating in the Excellent level were: Katherine Guardado, Yandi Bello- Ruiz, Shira Joya, Alysen Carrasco, Tabatha Lehmann, Cheyenne Gillis, and Keila Ramirez. Finally, rating in the Very Good level were: Sahara Agel, Stephen Manzo, Alexis Larsen, and Cally Servick. In the Art category, the following students received 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places respectively for their ASL paintings: Alicia Marzullo, Alison Prince, and Amanda Nehila. We are very proud of the hard work and achievements of all of these students.

News-Press Athlete of the Week Christian Menendez garnered 5,231 votes to win the News-Press Athlete of the Week for February 29 – March 5.

Ida Baker High was one of only two Florida high schools to receive national recognition for the DECA Advocacy Campaign. Our IBHS DECA chapter put forth a lot of time and energy into this project. Please congratulate our student marketing intern, Jessica Routte, for taking the lead on this Campaign.
