ICSSEA 2003

Integration & Interoperability In today’s world relying heavily on computers, it is natural to wish to have software applications inter-operate within a same enterprise as well as between different enterprises collaborating on a common goal. Avoiding redundant recording of information is an economic necessity compelled by the “just-in-time” operation of the integrated enterprise, and, even more, the virtual enterprise. The current trend is providing services to which enterprises want to access while preserving their capability to evolve without being tied to particular providers. Along this line, information systems rely on a capability to integration that needs to be preserved and maintained. The software ingredients enabling integration and inter-operability are well identified today: EAI or workflow engines, as far as middleware is concerned, ERP, CRP or SCM for applications, the whole being combined through n-tier architectures based on heterogeneous platforms. In practice, conducting inter-operability projects proves more difficult than expected. Professional organizations worry about this fact, and trade press reports regularly integration woes. As a matter of fact, integration and inter-operability projects reveal superbly the hidden complexity, but quite actual, of applications. This complexity is compounded by the fact that new systems are seldom initiated ex nihilo and independently from existing ones: they need to cooperate with legacy systems and to bring together heterogeneous elements provided by external sources. For developers this implies designing carefully their architectures, mastering requirements engineering, resorting to adequate means for specifying and composing components, verifying and validating designs and implementations, as well as managing closely projects and development processes. Organized by the Center for Mastering Systems & Software (CMSL) of CNAM (Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers), the aim of the 16th edition of the ICSSEA Conference, to be held on December 2-4, 2003, is to provide a critical survey of the current status of tools, methods, and processes for elaborating software and systems. Particular emphasis will be laid on the key facets of integration and inter-operability such as software architecture, reuse and components, requirements engineering, system and software testing, system evolution & maintenance, or project management.
