Vaishno Devi Temple

The first mention of the Mother Goddess is in the epic Mahabharat. When the armies of Pandavas and Kaurvas were arrayed in the battlefield of Kurukshetra, Arjun, the chief warrior of Pandavas upon the advice of Sri Krishna; meditated upon the Mother Goddess

and sought Her bless-ings for victory. This is when Arjun addresses the Mother Goddess as ‘Jambookatak Chit-yaishu Nityam Sannihi-talaye’, which means ‘you who always dwell in the temple on the slope of the mountain in Jamboo’ (probably referring to the present day Jammu). Navratri Festival is cele-

brated every year in Katra, the base camp of Sri Mata Vaishno Devi. On this auspicious occasion entire Katra town is decorated tastefully and people from the region participate in large numbers.

In order to visit the Holy Shrine of Mata Vaishno Deviji, one has to reach

Katra, a small town situated around 50 kms. from Jammu, the winter capi-

tal of the state of Jammu & Kashmir. Katra serves as the base camp for the

yatra. Katra is well connected to Jammu and Jammu, in turn, is well con-

nected to the rest of the country by air, rail, and road.

Kashi Vishwanath Kashi Vishwanath temple is one of the highly revered shrines of Lord Shiva. Earlier, Varanasi used to be known as Kashi, perhaps this is the reason the shrine is popular as Kashi Vishwanath. Vishwanath Temple has been mentioned in the holy scriptures for numerous times. In the

Hindu religion, the temple is regarded as one of the most important places of worship. As per the Hindu folklore, the temple must be visited once in the entire lifetime. A holy dip in Ganga River along with the 'darshan' of Lord Vishwanath is regarded as the leading way to 'Moksha' (salvation). Due to this reason, people seek to visit the place at least once in their life span. Some of the festivals celebrated are Mahashivaratri (Shivaratri is celebrated on the 6th night of the dark Phalgun (Feb or March) every year. On the auspicious day, devotees observe fast and keep vigil all night. Mahashivaratri marks the night when Lord Shiva performed the 'Tandava', Rangbhari (Amalaki) Ekadashi, Annakoot, Makara Sakranti, Shravan Masa, and Akshaya Tritiiya. Akshaya Tritiiya is considered as one of the four most auspicious days of the Ve-dic Calendar. It is the third day of the new moon of Vaishakh month (April-May). Varanasi is an important and major rail junction. The city is served by trains from all metros and major cities across the country. New Delhi, Mumbai, Calcutta, Chennai, Gwalior, Meerut, Indore,

Guwahati, Allahabad, Lucknow, and Dehradun. The nearest airport is Babatpur Airport.

Rameshwaram According to a popular legend, it was Lord Rama who installed this Linga here. Story goes that when Lord Rama was on his way to attack Ravana, he reached this place where he made a linga of sand and worshipped it. It is said that when Lord Rama was drinking water on the seashore there was a celestial proclamation - "You are drinking water without worship-ping me". Listening to this Lord Rama made a linga of sand and worshipped it and asked to be blessed so that he could vanquish Ravana. Lord Shiva blessed him accordingly. He also requested Lord Shiva to reside eternally here so that entire mankind should benefit from it. Shiva then manifested himself as the Linga and got installed there for eternity. According to yet another legend, while returning to Ayodhya, Rama worshipped Lord Shiva in the form of a Shiva Lingam made of earth by Sita. It is said that Hanuman was entrusted with the task of bringing an image of Viswanathar from Benares. Anticipating delay in Hanuman's return from Benares, Rama offered worship to a Shivalingam at a pre-chosen auspicious moment. This lingam is referred to as Ramalingam and the town is known as Rameshwaram. The following festivals are observed with greater glory and pomp in Rameshwaram. Masi Sivaratri - this festival is dedicated to Lord Shiva, Mahalaya Amavasai - last day of Mahalaya Paksham, Thai Amavasai, and Thirukalyanam. Rameshwaram Temple is situated in the island of Rameshwaram, off the Sethu coast of Tamil Nadu and is reached via the Pamban Bridge across the sea. The huge temple is known for its long ornate corridors, towers, and 36 theerthams.

Sri Ayodhya (The Birth Place of Lord Sri Rama)

According to our scriptures Ayodhya is the birth place of Lord Sri Rama. It is on the banks of sacred river Sarayu. It is the most sacred place of pilgrimage. Sri Ramayana says, the city was founded by Manu, later it became the capital of the descendants of the Surya dynasty. Lord Sri Rama was the most celebrated king of this dynasty. This region was known as Kosaladesa in ancient times, and also has been described as “a city built by Gods and being as prosperous as paradise itself” in the Atharva veda. Skanda and other Puranas rank Ayodhya as one of the seven most sacred cities of India. The following places should be visited in Ayodhya other than the Janamasthan, Kanak Bhavan, Hanuman Garhi, Ramkot, Swarg Dwar, Mani Parbat and Sugriv Parbat, Treta Ke Thakur, Nageshwarnath Temple etc. Some of the important festivals celebrated at Ayodhya are Sri Rama-navami in March/April and Shri Ram Vivah Utsav in Sept/Oct. Ayodhya is six miles from Faizabad station. There is a railway station in Ayodhya also. The nearest airport is at Lucknow (130 km). Ayodhya is situated in Uttar Pradesh.

Bhadrachalam - Sri Sita Ramachandra Swamy

According to a Ithihasas, the significance of this shrine dates back to the Ramayana Era. This coherent hill place existed in "Dandakaranya" of Ramayana period where Rama with his consort Sita and brother Laxmana had spent their vanavasam. Parnashala (the place connected to the famous Golden Deer and the place from where Sita was abduct-ed by Ravana) is also in the vicinity of this temple site. It is at this Mandir site that, long after Ramava-tara, Bhagawan Mahavishnu manifested Himself as Rama again to fulfill a promise He made to His Bhak-ta Bhadra, who continued his Tapas through Yugas, praying for the grace of the Bhagawan Sri Ramachan-dra Murthy. Two festivals are most important here at Bhadrachalam - Annual Kalyanotsavam on the eve of Sri Rama Navami and Vaikunta Ekadasi (Mukkoti). During Sri Rama Navami (March-April) there is a huge influx of pilgrims not only from Andhra Pradesh, but also from other distant places to attend the wedding of Lord Rama with Sita. Sri Sita Ramachandra Swamy will give darshan through the Vaikunta Dwaram on the eve of Mukkoti (December-January). Bhadrachalam is about 130 kilometres from district headquarters Khammam and 320 kilometres from Hyderabad.

Guruvayur The presiding deity in the Garbhagriha (central shrine) is Mahavishnu, worshipped according to the pooja routines laid down by

Adi Sankaracharya and later written in to the Tantrasamu-chaya by Chennas Narayanan Nam-boodiri (born in 1427). The Chennas Namboodiris are the hereditary Tan-tri of Guruvayur temple. The people at large, however, invoke the Lord as UNNIKRISHNA or BALA-KRISHNA. Guruvayur, the Utsavam lasts for ten days. Beginning on the day of Pushya (the 8th asterism) in the month of Kumbham ( February-March), it ends after the Aarat-tu on the 10th day. Guruvayur, the abode of Lord Sree Guruvayurap-pan, is located 29 kms northwest of Thrissur

(Trichur) in central Kerala.

Kolhapur Mahalakshmi

The Sri Mahalakshmi Temple of Kolhapur is one of the Shakti peethas located in Maharashtra. The various puranas of ancient India, have listed 108 Shakti peethas where Shakti (the goddess of pow-er) is manifested. Amongst these, Sri Mahalakshmi of the Karveer area, (the area where the present town of Kolhapur is located) is of special significance. Mahalakshmi Temple Kolhapur is one of the six sites of the Shakti, where one can get both fulfillment of desires as well as salvation from them. It is therefore considered of even greater significance than Uttar Kashi, the place where one prays for salvation to Sri Mahalakshmi the consort of Sri Vishnu. It is said that both Sri Lakshmi and Sri Vishnu reside in the Karveer area eternally and shall not leave even at the time of Mahapralayakala. This region is therefore also referred to as a Avimuktakshetra. Karveer re-gion is eternally blessed and is believed to be held by Mother Jagdambe in her right hand, and so this region is protected from all destruction. Lord Vishnu himself adores this region more than Vaikunta or the Kshirasagar since it is the home of His consort Lakshmi. The greatness of this region has therefore attracted many sages and devotees, the bless-ings and affections showered by this region on its devotees are immeas-urable. It is believed that Prabhu Sri Dattatreya still comes here every noon to seek alms. The Sri Mahalakshmi Temple is situated in the city of Kolhapur in Maha-rashtra. Kolhapur is an important and significant city lying in the ancient Karveer region which is a treasure trove of ancient religious monuments

in Western Maharashtra.

Sri Subrahmanya Swami, Tiruchendur On the coast south of Tuticorin, this impressive shore temple is one of the six abodes of Lord Murugan and is very popular with pil-

grims. The location of the temple is ideal and draws a perennial stream of devotees. The temple overlooking the sea is an inspir-ing sight. This place is revered as one of the greatest of the Lord's Aru Padai Veedugal, literally 'Six Bat-tle Camps'. In-deed, it is here that Murugan

and his deva-sena or army of celestials confront and vanquish the titan Surapadma and his demonic horde. This momentous struggle is annually re-created at Tiruchendur on the sixth day of Skanda Sashti, the 'Six (days) of Skanda'. It is located in the small town of Tiruchendur in the district of Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu, India. It is 55 km south-east of Tirunelveli, 40 km from Tuticorin and 75 km north-east of Kanyakumari. It is easily accessible either by bus or car. Frequent train services are available to Tiruchendur from the nearest railway junc-tion, Tirunelveli Junction.

Salasar Hanumanji

A Ginthala-Jat farmer of village Asota in the district Nagaur of Rajasthan was ploughing his field. All of a sudden the plough was hit by some stony thing and a resonating sound was created. He dug up the soil of that place and found idols covered with sand. His wife reached there with his lunch packet. The farmer showed the idol to his wife. She cleaned up the idol with her sari (dress). The idol was that of Balaji Lord Sri Hanuman. They bowed their heads with devotion and worshipped Lord Balaji. This news of the appearance of Lord Balaji spread in the village Asota immediately. The Thakur of Asota also heard the news. Balaji or-dered him in his dream to send the idol to Salasar in the Churu district. Same night a devotee of Lord Hanuman, Mohan Dasji Maharaj of Salasar saw Lord Hanuman or Balaji in his dreams as well. Lord Balaji told him about the idol of Asota. He immediately sent a message to the Thakur of Asota. The Thakur was surprised to discover that Mohandasji knew minor details without coming to Asota. Cer-tainly, it was all happening by the grace of the Almighty Lord Balaji. The idol was sent to Salasar and consecrated at the place known as Salasar Dham today. On Chaitra Purnima and Ashvin Purnima large fairs are organized every year where more than 6 to 7 lakhs of people assem-ble here to pay their homage to the deity. Salasar town is part of the district Churu in Rajasthan and it is situated on the Jaipur-Bikaner highway.

Nanganallur Chennai

Sri Ragavendra Swami and Sri Kanchi Paramacharyar entrenched the 32 foot idol of Sri Anjaneyar in 1989 and consummated the Kumbhabhishekam in 1995. The distinguished factor of the 32 feet idol is that it was molded out of a single rock. The idol of the central image is 32 feet in height making it one of its own kind. Sri Rama, Sri Lakshmana, and Sita with Sri Anjaneyar, Sri Vinayagar, Sri Ragavendra, and Sri Krishna with his consorts Bhama and Rukmini are also indoctrinated here. The idol is believed to have special power and is considered a healer. The temple conducts the following utsavams namely Hanuman Jayanti, Sri Rama Navami, and Gokulasthami. Hanuman Jayanti normally falls between Dec 15 - Jan 14. This is the most significant Utsavam of the Temple. This Utsavam goes on for a period of 15 to 17 days during which "Laksharchana" for Lord Anjaneya is per-formed. Japam, Homam, and Abishekam as prescribed in the scriptures are performed. Nanganallur - the satel-lite town to the city of Chennai, formerly Madras, located about 10 km from the city and 5 Km from the Airport, is now known as the town housing the 32 feet Viswaroopa Adhivyadhihara Sri Bhaktha Anjaneya Swamy. The temple has indeed become a landmark and no tourist bus in that route skips the temple. The temple is accessible by road and by subur-ban trains stopping at Pazhavanthangal railway station.

Sringeri Jagadguru Sri Adi Shankara Bhagavatpada established the first of the four Amnaya Peethams at Sringeri more than twelve centuries ago to foster the sacred tradition of Vedic and Sanatana Dharma. These peethams are the beacon lights of Sanatana Dharma.

He is the proponent of Advaita philos-ophy and revived Sanatana Dharma. When Sri Adi Shankara Acharya came to Sringeri, he saw an unusual sight on the banks of the Tunga. A cobra was seen spreading out its hood over a frog in labour pains, to give it shadow from the scorching mid-day sun. Struck with the sanctity of the place, which could infuse love between nat-ural adversaries, Sri Adi Shankara Acharya chose this very location to establish His first math.

The Navaratri Utsava is the most celebrated one among all the festivals at Sringeri. During these auspicious nine nights the Jaganmaata is worshipped who bestows ultimate knowledge (Brahma Gnyana), prosperity, and education (vidya). The nearest Airport to Sringeri is Mangalore International Airport Bajpe, which is at a distance of about 100 km away. Nearest railhead is at Udupi, which is connected by rail to Chikmagalur and other major cities in South India. Taxi cabs are available from Udupi to Sringeri.

Tirupati Tirumala

The ancient and sacred temple of Sri Venkateswara is located on the seventh peak, Venkatachala (Venkata Hill) of the Tirupati Hill, and lies on the southern banks of Sri Swami Pushkarini. It is by the Lord’s presidency over Venkatachala, that He has re-ceived the appellation, Venkateswara (Lord of the Venkata Hill). He is also called the Lord of the Seven Hills. The temple of Sri Venkateswara has acquired unique sanc-tity in Indian religious lore. The Sastras, Puranas, Sthala Mahatyams, and Alwar hymns unequivocally declare that, in the Kali Yuga, one can attain mukti, only by worshipping Venkata Nayaka or Sri Venkateswara. The benefits acquired by a piligrimage to Venkatachala are mentioned in the Rig Veda and Asthadasa Puranas. In the-se epics, Sri Venkateswara is described as the great be-stower of boons. There are several legends associated with the manifestation of the Lord at Tirumala. During September/October Bramhothsavam will be per-formed to Lord at Tirumala.

Millions of people come to participate in this utsavam to seek blessings of the Lord. The town of Tirupati is one of the most ancient and spectacular places of pilgrimage in In-dia. It is situated in the Chittoor district in southern Andhra Pradesh. The town owes its existence to the sacred temple of Lord Sri Venkateswara situated on the Tirumala Hill adjoining it. With a history that dates back to over twelve centuries, the temple is the jewel in the crown of ancient places of worship in southern India.

Dwarka

Krishna renounced war in Mathura for the greater good of the people living in the region (and was hence known by the name Rancho-drai) and founded the city of Dwarka. Sri Krishna had previously killed Kansa (an oppressive king who ruled the city and his maternal

uncle) and made Ugrasen (Kansa's father and his maternal grandfather) the king of Mathura. En-raged, the father-in-law of Kansa, Jarasandha (king of Magadha) with his friend Kalayavan at-tacked Mathura 17 times. For the safety of the people, Krishna and the Yadavas decided to move the capital from Mathura to Dwarka. Jarasandha lost all 17 times he fought and his complete ar-my was killed. Jarasandha attacked with 18 akshosainya each time. The Mahabharat war of Pan-davas and Kauravas consisted of 11 Akshosainya (1 Akshosainya describes 1000 horse riders, 1000 elephant riders, 2/3 thousand on foot something like that the figures for number of horse riders etc are not exact but Akshosainya is used and has a exact figures). Krishna left before Ja-rasandha was about to attack 18th time. Jarasandha lived for 800 to 1000 years and Bhisma also lived for little above 800 years of which 532 years he spent in learning. The city derives its name from the word dvar, meaning door or gate in Sanskrit. Dwarka is con-sidered to be one of the holiest cities in Hinduism and one of the Char Dham along with Badri-nath, Puri, and Rameswaram. The Jagatmandir temple which houses the Dwarkadhish, a form of Krishna, is also located in Dwarka. Dwarka is also the site of Dwarka Peeth, one of the four cardinal maths established by Sri Adi Shankara, the others being those at Sringeri, Puri, and Jyotirmath.

Prominent festivals celebrated at Dwarka are An-nakut Utsav performed in the month of Kartik, Bhai-Bij, Tulsi Vivah, Sankranti, Vasant Panchami, Holi, and Dhuleti. The closest domestic airport to Dwarka is located at Jamnagar. There are regular flights from Jamnagar to Mumbai International Airport. Taxi cabs are available from Jamnagar airport to Dwarka,

Jagannath Puri

Legendary account as found in the Skanda Purana, Brahma Purana, and other Puranas state that Lord Jagannath was originally wor-shipped as Neelamadhab by a saver king (tribal chief) named Viswavasu. Having heard about the deity, King Indradyumna sent a brahmin priest, Vidyapati to locate the Deity, who was wor-shipped secretly in a dense forest by Viswavasu. Vidyapati tried his best but could not locate the place. But at last he managed to marry Viswavasu's daughter Lalita. At repeated requests of Vidyapati, Viswavasu took his son-in-law blindfolded to a cave where Neelamadhab was wor-shipped. Vidyapati was very intelligent. He dropped mustard seeds on the way. The seeds germi-nated after a few days, which enabled him to find out the cave later on. On hearing from him, King Indradyumna proceeded immediately to Odra desha (Orissa) on a pilgrimage to see and worship the deity. The king was disappointed at the sudden disappearance of the deity. The dei-ty was hidden in the sand. The king was determined not to return without having darshan of the deity and observed fast unto death at Mount Neela, when a celestial voice cried “thou shalt see him”. Afterwards the king performed a horse sacrifice and built a magnificent temple for Vishnu. Narasimha murti (idol) brought by Narada was installed in the temple. During sleep, the king had a vision of Lord Jagannath. Also an astral voice directed him to receive the fragrant tree

on the seashore and make idols out of it. Accordingly the king got Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, Subhadra, and Chakra Sudarshan made and installed them in the temple. The most famous festival related to Jagannath is the Ratha Yatra, where Jagannath, along with the other two associated deities, comes out of the sanctum sanctorum of the chief temple (Bada Deula). They are transported to the Gundicha Temple (located at a distance of nearly 3 kilometres), in three massive wooden chariots drawn by dev-otees. Coinciding with the Rath Yatra festival at Puri, similar processions are organized all around the world. Located on the shores of the Bay of Bengal in the state of Orissa. Bhubaneshwar is the nearest airport. Puri is a rail terminus on the southeastern railways and is well con-nected to other parts of the country through the rail network. It is well connected to other parts of the country through the road net-work also.

Theertha Kshetra

The word Theertha means water and Theertha Kshetra is a sacred or a holy place. It could either be a river, a lake, or an ocean, or even a mountain that is made sacred through association with a deity or a saint. It is spiritual, sacred, and ce-lestial. Sthala Purana and Kshetra Mahatyam speak about a particular place/Theertha, its significance, cul-ture, and traditions of that place. These places are being used by the great sages for their spiritual activi-ties which are evident from the stha-la purana. Kshetra gained promi-nence depending on the merits of Theertha or the deity or the saint associated with it. It will help the pilgrims to cleanse their inner selves, wash out their evil tendencies

and open up before them a path or a direction for righteous living. It helps in at-taining Gnana and Bhakthi to the individuals and hence changes the direction of their future life. It is a place where one can get enlightenment for achieving liberation. Theertha Yatra is also one of the Karmas to be discharged. A Theertha Yatra is not only a physical act but it also implies the mental or moral disci-pline and learning toward self reali-zation. Pilgrimage/Theertha Yatra is a remedy for many ills and suffer-ings. Theertha Yatra is an oppor-

tunity to the householder to detach himself/herself for some time from worries and stress of the materialistic daily life and to devote that time spiritually.
