Tightly gripping his enormous weapon, CAT Publisher Steve Lewis dons Roman garb in readiness for CAT Night tonight at the Pantheon, a neo-Roman theatre that refl ects Leipzig’s Roman Empire history where ICCA chapter teams will compete in games for honours in the time-honoured fashion.

More than 1000 delegates have arrived in Leipzig for the 50th ICCA assembly – a new record for the association.

A total of 1,041 executives from international meetings businesses are in the German city for a fi ve-day programme of educational and social activities. The previous record was 982 delegates for the 2009 ICCA Congress in Firenze, Italy.

Since you arrived you will have seen the phrase “Leipziger Freiheit” everywhere. But what does it mean?

It beautifully refl ects the mentality of Leipzig’s citizens: their spirit of tolerance, freedom, and a curiosity for the unknown, above all, a desire to turn strangers into friends.

The citizens of Leipzig staged a series of peaceful protest marches against political oppression in 1989. Their spirit of freedom led to

What Leipzig has done for you...

Dick ouwehand rememberedIt is with great sadness that we record the death of Dick Ouwehand who was Secretary General of ICCA from 1987 to 1995. He passed away on October 8, 2011 and his cremation was held on Friday 14 October 2011.

Born in December 1930, the erudite Dutchman was a gentleman of great personal charm, a precocious intellect and irresistible dry wit. He guided ICCA safely through turbulent times and his passing will be greatly felt by all who knew him.

the collapse of the communist regime in East Germany, to the fall of the Berlin Wall, and to the end of the Cold War, thus bringing freedom to many individuals and countries throughout Europe and the world.

Now it has been adopted as the city’s offi cial slogan in a campaign created by LTM Leipzig Tourismus & Marketing who are co-sponsoring the ICCA Congress in Leipzig in so many ways.

It was no easy task. There are so many things

which are iconic for the city. With such composers as Bach, Mendelssohn, Schumann and Wagner all leaving their mark, it could be the city of music. Or perhaps the city of publishing, art, sport, science or motor cars (think Porsche).

So, it was no coincidence that the citizens of Leipzig chose freedom as their icon of identity. It runs through all levels of the cultural life they have shared with the world for centuries.

Chapters key to international growthICCA is becoming less Eurocentric, new membership fi gures reveal.

For the fi rst time ever the total percentage of European members in ICCA has fallen below the 60 per cent mark and half of new members now hail from outside the region.

The latest statistics show ICCA has 975 members, of which 41 per cent are non-European. On a country-by-country basis 87 countries are now represented, with only 47 per cent based in Europe.

It is expected that members from outside Europe will make up around half of the total membership within the next few years as ICCA expands its international reach through its chapters.

North America, South East Asia and the Middle East are key growth areas for the organisation.

Miranda Ioannou, from the ICCA Meetings Advisory Group, said: “We are going to see a lot more activity from the regional chapters so we are closer to our membership. If you have a problem, it is easier to access your chapter than go to HQ.”

She said ICCA’s global reach would help members weather the ‘economic storms, natural disasters and political turmoil’, which have caused so much havoc in the last year.

There is no better value-for-money marketing investment in our industry than membership of ICCA, according to its president Arnaldo Nardone.

Speaking at the Leipzig general assembly just 12 months after his election, Arnaldo Nardone of Montevideo said: “I have now seen how ICCA operates from the inside and am proud that we have been able to add real value to ICCA membership over the course of this year. For the many members who are using a good range of our services, I am convinced there is no better value-for-money marketing investment in our industry. For those few members in this audience who aren’t making the best use of what ICCA has to offer I have only one message: speak to the ICCA staff and get active, starting today!”

ICCA ‘best value-for-money’, says nardone

If you want to improve your performance you should eat chocolate, drink wine and play the piano.

That’s the view of Jon Bradshaw (pictured), meetings performance consultant, and formerly of Imex Exhibitions. In his presentation to delegates in the Meeting Support Sector, he said he had set up the Meetology Research Institute to provide research into developing improved performance from meetings and delegates. Dr Jon Sutton from the British Psychological Society has been recruited as a consultant and Bradshaw says he is “passionate” about the subject.

Science, he said, has already provided a lot of performance- enhancing information and it won’t be long before performance-enhancing but legal drugs are prescribed by conference organisers. In the room in the Congress Centre

was oily fi sh, blueberries, walnuts and spinach – all are good for cognitive performance and improved mental abilities, according to Bradshaw. He said other good brain foods include bread, yoghurt, blackcurrants, cocoa, tea and red wine (phew!)

“Remember that brain food fuels us – we are meeting athletes”, said Bradshaw. He added that Scandinavia is leading the fi eld in providing brain food at meetings and said modest levels of coffee are good for the brain. But he said that if you want to be more creative, you should do the following:• Embrace your grouch – it changes, questions and challenges the status quo• Let your mind wander• Look at art• Colour it blue (creative response is created)• Play the piano• Be more playful• Raise a glass!

MEETINGS:review, the leading international online TV and news channel has been acquired by a new joint venture company formed by Questex Hospitality + Travel and MeetingsIn.

The new business, called Qube International, will incorporate MEETINGS:review. The new owners claim the resources of Questex Hospitality + Travel, coupled with a dedicated global news and RFP lead generation platform from MeetingsIn LLC and MEETINGS:review, bring “a unique digital solution for small and professional meeting planners and the venues and destinations wanting to trade with them.” Questex says the new entity will reach more than 700,000 global buyers and industry professionals, with a powerful focus across the key meetings markets including the US.

Kerry Gumas, Questex President and CEO said: “Questex is an industry-respected global leader in the travel and hospitality industries, but we have focused our interests in the meeting and business sector They had to adopt a little Kiwi

ingenuity to follow yesterday’s Rugby World Cup fi nal, but the small New Zealand contingent at ICCA was “over the moon” with the All Blacks’ nail-biting 8-7 win over a fi red-up French team.

Leonie Ashford from Tourism New Zealand (centre) and Chris Atkinson from Auckland Convention Bureau (right), followed the action via online minute-by-minute blogs; while Jo Robinson, the Kiwi at Adelaide

Convention Centre (left), had access to surreptitious audio streaming during a session – aided and abetted by some friendly Aussies. (Meanwhile, Rochelle Long of CAT Publications was keeping in touch via ropey online streaming in the press room).

Despite an “incredibly tense” game, the Kiwis were fi nally able to break open the bubbly to celebrate the victory as the All Blacks lifted the Webb Ellis Cup after a 24-year drought.

MEETInGs:review sold to Questex and MeetingsInon events including Incentive Travel Exchange, Caribbean Meeting & Incentive Travel Exchange and Europe Meeting & Incentive Travel Exchange. This new venture extends our market access and visibility in the international meeting and business events arena, and aligns us more closely with the supply chain across the spectra we already service.”

Ian Quartermaine, founder and CEO of MeetingsIn, said: “We are delighted by the partnership with Questex as it brings colossal marketing strength and an exceptional sales presence to the industry. The acquisition of MEETINGS:review brings unparalleled industry, destination and rich media content that has, itself, raised the bar in online content provision.”

Us cities bid for higher rankingThe North Americans haven’t been doing vey well in the ICCA rankings because of lack of reporting individually by cities. “We have been doing well nationally, of course” said the chairman of the North American chapter, “and continue in fi rst place.”

Up to now there has been a reticence to report meetings business but the value of comparison with others has now been recognised and a taskforce has been set up to put matters right.

‘stop shouting, start listening’Social media speaker Lykle de Vries’ ‘kicker’ cut straight to the point: “The ROI of social media is your business will still exist in fi ve years.”

While more traditional ‘gatekeeper’ media struggled, he said, more than 600 million people were using social media networks at least once a day.

Destination marketers should look at what is already being said about their city or country online, then curate it and share it – or address those who had negative experiences to show that they are being heard.

“Use these tools to build trust and maintain it. Real human interaction is still the core, but social media allows you to spread out and support that. Stop shouting at the world and start listening.”

“Social media has overtaken pornography as the number one activity on the internet,” – Lykle de Vries, De Ondernemer, The Netherlands, about social media.

“Trevor’s solar panels are nearly as big as my exhibition hall,” – ACC Liverpool’s Kerrin Macphie plays the size comparison game with the Qatar National Convention Centre.

Things they say

The fat cats come to townAmong the earliest arrivals in Leipzig for the 50th ICCA congress were some of the biggest names in the business. ICCA president Arnaldo Nardone (well, he has to be here, of course), past president Leigh Harry and also Edgar Hirt, president of the venues association AIPC, were all spotted scurrying to their respective duties.

In unusually warm central European sunshine, the Congress Center Leipzig proudly threw open its doors and the four great lions, emblematic of the city, stood ready to greet them.

ICCA membership manager Ksenija Polla addressed more than 200 fi rst time attendees on the opening day of the congress, with the words of wisdom: “We have numerous experts here – use them and do not be afraid to ask for advice. Don’t make your time away a void in your offi ce; make it like your offi ce has gained 1,000 employees.” Here’s what a selection of fi rst-time attendees hope to achieve at the ICCA Congress 2011:

“Argentina is bidding to host the ICCA Congress in 2015 – for us it’s very important to see how it all works! It’s also important to be here for the education programme and networking possibilities.” Vanesa Lio, Buenos Aires Province – Secretariat of Tourism, Argentina

“I’m taking part in the disaster management session with a case study of the earthquake in Japan. Natural disasters can happen anywhere – it’s important to talk about it and how you promote your country after such an experience.” Mariko Tatsumi, Japan Convention Bureau – Japan National Tourism Organization, Japan

“I’m speaking at a session on brand-building. I hope to be able to give delegates a real insight into how we run our conference WIT (Web In Travel) – and I hope to maybe secure some attendees out in Singapore.” Carl Griffi th, Cloud View, Singapore

“I’m hoping to meet some of the leading industry people, develop partnerships, do some networking basically. I will be going to as many sessions as possible, but I’m particularly interested in the sector meetings and learning more about the association market.” Jakub Konysz, ASAE, The Center for Association Leadership, US

“I have come to learn, hopefully to fi nd a few more mentors, and to develop international business leads for the PCO I work for. I like ICCA, there doesn’t seem to be a vertical hierarchy in the organisation, so it’s great for networking. You can speak to people who have 20 years of experience, as though they are your own teacher.” Davide Odella, Grupa Trip J., Poland

“As a blind person, I am here specifi cally to look at the accessibility issue across the whole meetings industry, as most people seem to think it’s just about wheelchairs. We want to mainstream this issue, so it becomes the norm.” Shakila Maharaj, KwaZulu-Natal Tourism, Africa

“I’m here for the networking, but also for training. I’m defi nitely here for the educational content as much as anything and if I can learn some new marketing strategies to take home then I will be happy.” Silvio Ramos, Bedouk Meetings & Events Media, France

“I want to meet new people, hear about the latest ideas and research in the industry, and discuss trends with my counterparts from other countries.” Irette Ferreira, Qatar National Convention Centre

Venues must do better to win and keep clients, says norris

Irish make a song and dance about decision-makers in Dublin

First words from first timers

Venues are having to do more for less to win and keep clients, the venue sector of ICCA affi rmed yesterday.

“Five years ago we didn’t have a risk manager,” revealed Annabel Norris of Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre. “Now we do.”

There were 17 new members in this, the largest sector of ICCA, and predominantly the joiners had been from outside Europe – more than

50 per cent. And a forest of non-European hands in the plenary room proved the point.

The latest sector survey was completed by 141 centres, which is only 47 per cent of category membership and a disproportionate 84 were Europeans so the sector was urged to do better geographically next time. The survey excluded hotels although the hotel category is growing within the sector.

A ‘compulsory hooley’ (that’s Irish dancing for the uninitiated), whiskey tasting and excellent business opportunities are on offer at the next European Client/Supplier Workshop, to be held in Dublin, Ireland 28-30 June 2012.

The event is open to decision makers for European conferences of more than 500 delegates and three-day sduration, with the event being held at least once every four

years and rotating between at least three European countries.

The workshop will be open to 15 destinations able to attract a suitable client for the exchange of experience and forging of new relationships – plus an enjoyable time in Dublin.

Meanwhile, ICCA’s fi rst Small Destination Client/Supplier Workshop will be held in Ghent in November 2012 and, depending on its success, another will run in 2013.

The minefield of VAT compliance was tactically swept by mine-detector Martin Pinsonnault of TaxPort USA Corpn, but without making them safe, during the Meetings Management session.

Best advice he gave the largely PCO audience was to “appoint a tax advisor early” particularly, but not exclusively, for events outside the EU.

“It’s a vey complex subject,” he added unnecessarily.

Up to December 2006 it was

Tip-toeing warily through the VAT minefieldquite simple, but since January 2007 things changed due to an EU ruling. Further changes were made to what was deemed taxable, most of them to do with the place of supply of services rule. Local government at the venue became the big players.

Pinsonnault’s over-arching recommendations were to appoint a tax advisor, make sure you are told of the VAT consequences of using a particular venue and ask questions about what tax applied depending on the size of the event.

German cities ponder accommodation tax puzzleThe contentious issue of ‘bed’ taxes reared its head again when senior industry figures met to discuss the impact of government funding cutbacks on the meetings industry.

During a round-table discussion it emerged that most German cities were now mulling a visitors’ tax, where hotel guests are charged a small additional fee for their stay.

Should they choose to impose the surcharge they will join a growing number of countries and destinations across Europe using this method to boost revenues.

A representative from the Dusseldorf Convention Bureau said that hoteliers had started to collect a tourism tax, but a legal wrangle was now stalling proceedings.

Delegates also reported variations in how the money was spent. In most cases a percentage of the levy went towards promoting tourism or ‘cultural activities’, but this was not universal.

Eric Bakermans, marketing manager, The Netherlands Board of Tourism & Conventions, said such a levy in his country would be for ‘general purposes’ and not ring-fenced for tourism.

“More to the point, I don’t like it,” he said. “What are we saying to our guests? ‘Welcome

Sponsorship is taxable in most circumstances whether it applies to the whole event or not.

Can an association be exempt from VAT compliance? There were few exceptions. And be aware, he warned, that the same rules may not apply to the same meeting organised in a non-EU country from one year to the next.

And the final bombshell: revenue generated from a web page is not considered a legitimate invoice.

to Holland, here’s your invoice. No, it doesn’t work like that.”

An alternative to the bed tax was offered by Martin Winter, CEO of Gold Coast Tourism, Australia. There a tax is levied on all businesses, which generates around AUD 11.5 billion for tourism.

Liquid lunch with Generation RieslingFive German congress centres will set aside local professional rivalry tomorrow (Tuesday) when they treat delegates to the 50th ICCA World Congress to a slap-up meal – and a drop or two of Riesling!

The venues want to promote the Metropolitan Region of Frankfurt Rhine-Main which, they say, has “far more to offer than convenient traffi c and transport facilities” – like wine, for example.

The Frankfurt Rhine-Main Region is Germany’s biggest and most popular wine-growing area and lunch will be supported by Generation Riesling, an association of ambitious young wine growers. Congress centres in Frankfurt, Wiesbaden, Mainz and Darmstadt, will be hosting the event.

CAT night infoSponsored by CAT Publications

Looking like an ancient Roman temple, the “Pantheon” was erected in 1913 and originally served as a Leipzig Trade Fair exhibition pavilion. Today it is a popular entertainment venue. The interior combines the building’s old architecture with funky modern elements. The central dome is surrounded by chill-out areas. Thus, the Volkspalast will set a perfect scene for a really fun CAT Night.

Don’t miss out on great deals on meetings-related, incentive and other items! A great variety of prizes awaits your bids at the ICCA Silent Auction!

Generous ICCA members and other industry colleagues have donated exceptional prizes for this year’s Silent Auction. An overview of the prizes can be found at the Foyer level 0. Every ICCA Member and Congress Delegate is more than welcome to bid for the lots. Bidding is done via the Spotme device which each delegate should have collected upon arrival.

Bidding for the Silent Auction lots is anonymous. For delegates’ convenience ICCA has also implemented the max bidding system which allows entering the maximum amount which

delegates are willing to pay for a particular item. The system will then bid on their behalf up to their selected maximum. The max bid is not visible to other users and has to be unique.

The Silent Auction will close for bids on Tuesday, 25 October 2011 at 15:45 local time.

The ICCA Silent Auction is an annual charity event supporting the ICCA Education fund. This fund provides education opportunities for Young Meetings Professionals and helps raise professional standards in the international meetings industry.

ICCA’s success over four decades has been built on the principle of members exchanging commercial information with one another about recently hosted events. This is the foundation of ICCA’s Association Database and again will be a central component of this year’s Congress.

What is “Business Exchange (BE)” information and why is it valuable?

At many ICCA events, and especially at the annual Congress, many members sign up to exchange data on association meetings that they have recently hosted or helped to organise. This data is more detailed than that which is held in the standard ICCA database fields, and provides additional insights that can be extremely valuable when bidding or deciding whether to bid for a meeting.

To apply for the Business Exchange (BE) each of the

184 delegates provided data on one major international event they have recently been involved with, and committed themselves to share their insights and inside knowledge about this event with other delegates throughout the Congress. ICCA Data supported delegates in ensuring that an unprecedented amount of commercially important data is exchanged during the Congress, turning the event into a massive intelligence gathering opportunity.

Some tips and tricks for those participating:• Make sure you know your own business lead in extreme detail, so that you can offer genuinely valuable advice to other delegates.• Research which leads are relevant to your company/destination, especially leads or bids you are already working

on, so that you know who to track down in Leipzig to exchange data.• Obtain additional detailed information on existing sales leads/bids.• Identify ICCA members who could in future provide valuable information on prospective clients/events.• Contact key ICCA members to either follow up sales leads, or reinforce the new relationship and ensure willingness to exchange useful information on an ongoing basis.

And for those who were too late to sign up for this year:Find out more about this programme from this year’s participants – their badges will show if they are participating.

At this year’s general assembly, ICCA president Arnaldo Nardone said the past year had felt like 24 months because so much had happened to him and the world.

He pointed to the impact of political events and natural disasters on member organisations and countries and said the past year had been unique. But, he said, it is in times like this that ICCA can show invaluable support for those affected by such events.

“One of my fi rst policy changes as president has been to bring the ICCA Board of Directors closer to you, the members, to make sure that our strategic decisions are in line with your business priorities, and that we really listen to your concerns and objectives. I strongly believe that unless ICCA’s leadership constantly listens to its members, it is in danger of drifting away from relevance; unless members feel that they are able to interact directly with their leaders, they will not support the many strategic changes.

“Whilst my travels have shown me a wonderfully positive picture of ICCA members and their business successes, it is important to also refl ect on the

broader background of the world in which we have to operate. Terrorism is still a terrible burden, whether by crazy individuals, or calculating organisations and the groups that have committed numerous atrocities in many countries around the world. This has also been a dreadful year for natural disasters.

Economically, we have had an even more crazy year: a near-default on US government debt, a nonstop crisis in the Euro-zone, and wild movements in the prices of gold, oil and exchange rates. Anti-banker protesters are occupying city centres, and yet many companies are earning greater profi ts than ever before. The situation sometimes seems far too complicated for any individual to understand what is going on.

“Whilst all of this economic and political turmoil has been going on, ICCA has steadily kept doing the work that we value: substantially increasing the size, functions, and amount of detail in the association database; building our membership slowly but steadily, focusing on attracting the right quality of company which will add real value for all of us in this business community.”

hotels unite in city’s convention push Almost a third of the mid-range to up-market hotels in Florence have joined forces with the city’s convention bureau in a campaign to make the destination more attractive to meeting planners.

Forty of the city’s 140 three, four and fi ve star hotels have signed up to the scheme which will ‘ring-fence’ 3,500 rooms for organisers of major congresses. In return, hotels will be given web-marketing support, access to promotional material, participation in events, priority advertising and ‘high visibility’ during conventions and trade fairs.

Firenze Convention Bureau (FCB) president Giacomo Billi said: “This demonstrates the

importance of the conference sector for the region. Investing in conferences is a priority.”

Beatrice Grassi, president of the hoteliers association in Florence, added: “We welcome this important partnership. We fi rmly believe in the activity of FCB with a new management team which seems to have brought a wave of competence and enthusiasm to the congress sector.”

Meanwhile, the association is actively involved in a working group to verify the possibility of allocating a large part of the city’s tax revenues to the conference sector. FCB director, Carlotta Ferrari, said they were “striving to enhance the entire hospitality industry”.
