Art from across the seas this month, starting with FIONA WATSON [1] at CASTLEGALLERY from 03–25 JUN. Born in Newfoundland, she initially studied to be a

biological scientist before deciding on a change of career. Printmaking at the

Glasgow Print Studio opened up a whole new world; etching copper and steel

plates with acid turned out to be the perfect blend of art and science. Since then

her work has developed to include digital imaging, screen printing, photography,

collage, painting, video and land art. Watson’s work is characterized by a

whimsical, yet sometimes cynical, playfulness. Her paintings, original prints and

collages are delicate, meticulous and beautifully crafted.

Up in Helmsdale at TIMESPAN Icelandic design collective VIK PRJÓNSDÓTTIR[2] showcase their textile work in an exhibition running until 19 JUN that bringstogether contemporary design and traditional craft. “In the centuries-old struggle

to live on this inhospitable island, sheep have been our greatest resource,”  they

say. And so, working almost exclusively with Icelandic sheep’s wool, they’ve madeuse of a resource that has evolved in isolation over 1,000 years. Its particular

combination of light, insulating inner fibres and long, tough outer fibres creates

warm, waterproof and uniquely durable textile material. The collective work hand

in hand with local knitwear factories and producers, in a collaboration that is

invigorating the Icelandic wool industry with a new design impetus.

Well, this is strange. After three months where it felt like there was a new ‘event’ picture

every other week, the month of June – traditionally where the big guns come out in full

force – seems strangely sparse. There’s no trace of ‘–Men’ (Bat, Super, or X), with the two

tentpole features of the month being two sequels nobody’s quite sure that they want –

INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE (26 JUN Vue) in which Roland Emmerich follows up

his 90s staple, minus Will Smith and plus LIAM HEMSWORTH; and NOW YOU SEE ME 2

(10 JUN Vue), a continuation to the inexplicably successful 2012 magician heist movie,

now with added DANIEL RADCLIFFE. Alternatively, a lower-budget action flick (and perhaps

the month’s best) can be found in THE NICE GUYS [1] (03 JUN Vue) – a buddy/action

movie from Shane Black, boasting the pairing of RYAN GOSLING (looking typically smooth)

and RUSSELL CROWE (revealing a hitherto unseen talent for comedy – oi, who at the

back said Les Mis ?) as a PI and mob enforcer investigating a conspiracy in 60s LA – think

James Ellroy à la Black’s ownLethal Weapon . If you prefer heartstring-tugging to shooting,

‘magic’ tricks, or punching, then the major release for you might be ME BEFORE YOU

[2] (03 JUN Vue), an adaptation of Jojo Moyes’ young adult weepie, with EMILIA CLARKEstarring as the caretaker who falls for SAM CLAFIN’s severely disabled rich kid. None of

that tickles your fancy? Then pop along to Eden Court, where there are second chances

to see two of the best blockbusters of the year so far (really), CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL

WAR (25–26, 28–29 JUN) and THE JUNGLE BOOK (04–05 JUN).

Two real-life icons get the big-screen treatment this month, with perhaps the most notable

being the already awards-buzzed RACE [3] (03 JUN Vue), starring STEPHAN JAMES as

Jesse Owens, the African-American track and field athlete who won a record-breaking

four gold medals at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Meanwhile, DON CHEADLE writes, directs

and stars in MILES AHEAD [4]  (24–30 JUN EC), a fictionalised Miles Davis biopicwhich seemingly seeks less to accurately chronicle Davis’ life than imitate the rambling

structure and hazy style of his music – and could well be as effortlessly enjoyable.

If, when it comes to true stories, you prefer to skip dramatisations and go straight to the

source, then there’s a few treats this month: Eden Court have two profiles of Scottish folk

legends: WHERE YOU’RE MEANT TO BE (17–23 JUN EC) follows ex-Arab Strap frontman

AIDAN MOFFAT as he takes his reinterpretations of Scottish folk songs around the

country, while HAMISH [5] (03–09 JUN EC) delves into the life of folk revival figurehead,

Scots poet and World War II veteran HAMISH HENDERSON. NB:XPONorth  offer a special

screening of the latter at Eden Court on 08 JUN, followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers. There are two examinations of controversial artists in MAPPLETHORPE: LOOK AT THE

PICTURES [6] (28–29 JUN) and VERSUS: THE LIFE AND FILMS OF KEN LOACH [7]

(03–06 JUN), which look at the “sexual outlaw” photographer, Robert, and social realist

filmmaker, respectively. Where documentaries - and controversy, for that matter - can

be found, of course, MICHAEL MOORE is rarely far behind, and America’s most divisive

pundit now returns with WHERE TO INVADE NEXT [8]  (10 JUN Vue, 10–16 JUN EC),

which sees him travelling the globe in search of solutions to America’s economic and

social ills. It will not be subtle, but it will be incendiary, and it will be compelling.

Fans of horror and animation (but not both at once) face competition between Hollywoodand continental efforts. If you want a scare, then you’ve got the sleeper-hit sequel THE

CONJURING 2 [9] (17 JUN Vue), with VERA FARMIGA and PATRICK WILSON reprising their

roles from the first instalment while James Wan returns as director – or a truly twisted

collection of fairytales in TALE OF TALES [10] (17 JUN Vue), Gomorrah  director Matteo

Garrone’s star-studded, gloriously surreal take on the Neapolitan folk stories where the

    Nice Guys Finish First…

likes of Rapunzel, Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella originated. And if the kids are off to thecinema, then it’s a toss-up between Toy-Story-but-with-pets THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS (24 JUN Vue) and hand-drawn French-Danish sea-faring adventure LONG WAY NORTH[11] (17 JUN Vue), which looks likely to be utterly charming.

Other Eden Court highlights are Turkish-French director DENIZ GAMZE ERGÜVEN’s Oscar-nominated coming-of-age tale MUSTANG [12] (17–23 JUN), Gallic provocateur LUCILEHADŽIHALILOVIC’s superbly unsettling and massively exciting-looking feminist bodyhorror EVOLUTION [13] (10–16 JUN), plus several films that ‘skipped’ Vue – includingDEMOLITON (03–09 JUN), SING STREET [14] (until 02 JUN) and EVERYBODY WANTSSOME!! (10–16 JUN); and a chance to pay tribute to the much-missed PRINCE with ascreening of PURPLE RAIN on what would have been his birthday, 07 JUN.SHORT FILM FANS: Don’t miss the huge programme of shorts available to view as part of 2016’s  XPONORTH (08–09 JUN) all at Eden Court, all FREE  - register at  xponorth.co.uk (see P29)

Funny old fella that J.R.R. Tolkien. In 1939 he was despairing of ever bringing his great

work The Lord of the Rings  to a conclusion, but never one to let his mind idle, he kept the

cogs whirring. And one morning he woke up with a story complete in his head. As you do.

The resulting yarn, about a painter obsessed with a canvas of a tree with a vast landscape

behind wasLEAF BY NIGGLE [1], which Puppet State Theatre Co bring to EDEN COURT on

03 JUN. Surrounded by ladders, bikes and heirlooms, Richard Medrington (Jean from The

Man Who Planted Trees ) recounts Tolkien’s miniature masterpiece, with music specially

composed by KARINE POLWART in a show suitable for everyone aged ten and over.

Another kids’ classic comes in the shape of SEUSSICAL THE MUSICAL JR at EDEN

COURT on 17 & 18 JUN. Journey from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus as

the Cat in the Hat narrates the story of Horton the Elephant who discovers a speck of

dust containing tiny people called the Whos. A magical show for all the family courtesy of

Performers UK, whose FAME JR was a big hit at EC last year. And we’re looking forward to

the EDEN COURT COLLECTIVE – NTS EXCHANGE SHOW [2] at EC on 29 JUN, wherein a

group of young actors from all over Scotland have been brought together to create a new

piece of thought provoking theatre for the NTS Exchange Festival. Devised by the actors

themselves under the direction of Eden Court CREATIVE Theatre workers, this is a chance

to see the next generation of dramatic talent. For more local young talent, see P35>>>

David Walliams is becoming this generation’s Roald Dahl and his fans will be wanting to

head to BRODIE CASTLE for a performance of his excellent RATBURGER [3] on 26 JUN.

And grown ups will love it as much as the kids.

    19/48

We’re sure that there’ll eventually be a month when there’s not much great music

on offer, but rest assured, this one isn’t it. Perhaps the most far reaching event

is XPONORTH (08 & 09 JUN) with not just a load of creative talks, workshops and

more at Eden Court, but free nightly gigs all over town from over 70 bands. As

you’d expect, there’s plenty of local acts on show, the best of whom also appear

at ‘Brew’ just a few days earlier (eg SPRING BREAK [1], LIONAL [2], SCHNARFF

SCHNARFF [3]) but others have travelled from all over the world and there’s even

an appearance from erstwhile Oxford Britpoppers HURRICANE #1. If you want to

go the gigs you have to register, but it’s free and open to everyone, so head along

to xponorth.co.uk and put your name down.

One of the most eagerly awaited appearances this month is surely that of PUBLIC

IMAGE LTD [4], John Lydon’s post-punk combo who have been making some of

the most innovative sounds around for almost 40 years on and off. While the

band remain at heart a vehicle for Lydon’s highly individual creativity, this line-upfeaturing The Pop Group’s mighty Bruce Smith and multi instrumentalist Scott

Firth have been playing together for years, so expect something pretty special.

Lydon has almost become a heritage act these days, but he’s a veritable

whippersnapper compared to ROD STEWART [5]. The Tartan Cockney brings his

tried and trusted mixture of showmanship, charisma and often underrated songs

(in particular ‘Killing Of Georgie’) to ICT’s CALEDONIAN STADIUM on 18 JUN.

Footballs will be hoofed into the crowd and leopardskin will be de rigueur.

If folk and world music’s your thing, you’re equally well served this month,

beginning with the excellent BUDAPEST CAFE ORCHESTRA at UNIVERSAL HALL

on 10 JUN who play traditional folk and gypsy flavoured music from across the

Balkans and Russia. At the same venue on 16 JUN and DINGWALL TOWN HALL

    on 17 JUN are TREACHEROUS ORCHESTRA [6] – a eleven-strong juggernaut who

invest folk with rare gusto, while on 23 JUN at EDEN COURT, TCHA LIMBERGER

& HIS KALOTASZEG TRIO [7]  play laments, Czardas and Szaporas from the

Transylvanian region of Kalotaszeg. Not something you’re likely to experience

every day, but the combination of beautiful voice and violin is irresistible. Another

beautiful voice is that of KAREN MATHESON [8] (UNIVERSAL HALL 01 JUN/EDENCOURT 12 JUN), singer with Capercaillie, who’ll be playing music from her new

album ‘Urram ’ which features Indian and African as well as Celtic musicians.

A word too for the excellent local musician JAMES MACKENZIE [9] who, aside

from appearing at XPONorth and Brew… headlines the Between The Lines  show

at EDEN COURT on 30 JUN (with support from Michael Cassidy), Ninja Tune

Radio’s ace DJ MONEYSHOT  at MAD HATTERS on 24 JUN and the traditional

festival kick start to the summer, BREW AT THE BOG (BOGBAIN FARM, 03 & 04

JUN) featuring a host of great bands including our tips HALFRICAN [10], PAWS,

IDLEWILD, WOMPS - and the excellent ‘Associates-for-the-21st–century’, WHITE.

which takes place on 08 & 09 JUN looks like being the best yet, particularly as it

has made the sensible decision to base proceedings in one place, namely EDEN

COURT. There’s still music in venues all around the city, but everything else can

be found in one place. And, most importantly, it’s OPEN TO ALL and ABSOLUTELY

FREE. All you have to do is go to the website at xponorth.co.uk and register.

A full list of everything taking place can be found in our print and online listings, but highlights include: 38 panels on subjects as wide-ranging as supercharging a

smartphone to broadcast standard tech innovations such as The Digital Garage

from Google; more than 100 films screened from emerging filmmakers at home

and abroad, including a short five-minute film at the start of every panel; a

    Dragon’s Den Style event at which writers pitch to top agents and publishers;

some of the most influential music supervisors currently operating in the world with

representation from Sony Computer Entertainment, ThinkSync, Warp Records and

Grey Worldwide and eleven one-off masterclasses allowing participants the chance

to learn from the cream of the creative industry crop. Sessions include; making

most out of crowdfunding, discovering secrets of good documentary storytelling,

introduction to game narratives, taking a germ of an idea and turning it into a film

script, applying 3D printing to business, shooting 360 content, songwriting without

    tears and much more…

XpoNorth is rightfully going to grab much of the attention this month, but there are

another couple of events worth checking out, beginning with WILL MILLARD [1] at

EDEN COURT EMPIRE on 08 JUN. This brand new solo show from the presenter of

BBC Two’s Hunters of the South Seas  (who has spent his twenties seeking ancient

intertribal trade routes in the unexplored West Papua) features stories from theseldom-seen lives of the Bajau spearmen, a first-hand account of an aboriginal

whale hunt and hard lessons from the most remote forest on earth.

The HIGHLAND LITERARY SALON at GLEN MHOR HOTEL consistently books some

sparkling guests and this month is no exception, with one of the country’s finest

writers, CHRISTOPHER BROOKMYRE appearing on 14 JUN. Highly recommended.

    While the Football’s Away…

    1

While the football season may be over, we’ll always have the memory of that brief

fortnight when both the Scottish Cup and the League Cup were held by Highland

teams – even if ICT and Ross County’s league form rather petered out towards the

end of the campaign. And at least there’ll be no worries about the national team

underachieving at EURO 2016 (10 JUN–10 JUL), since Scotland decided to take

the principled stand of not qualifying. The football close season does mean that we

can turn our attention to other sports though – like SHINTY [1]. To be honest, the

structure of leagues and cups within the sport is eternally baffling, but we do know

that the RBS MACTAVISH CUP FINAL at BUGHT PARK on 11 JUN is one of the

highlights of the shinty calendar. Head along to see how exciting the game can be

when played at the highest level. As we print, local clubs fill 3 of the last 4 spots in

the comp, GLENURQUHART, NEWTONMORE or KINGUSSIE all still in with a shout.

More excitement at the UCI MTB WORLD CUP in FORT WILLIAM on 04 & 05 JUN,

bringing together the best mountain bikers on the planet. A spectacular setting

and huge crowds make for an experience that’s as thrilling for the crowd as for the

    competitors.

    A two-wheeled event that’s not quite as hair-raising is the BIKEATHON, a 25 mile

family friendly ride that starts and finishes in Kingussie. Organised by Scottish Health

Charity Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland working with Cycle Friendly Kingussie and the

local community. All proceeds go to support people affected by debilitating chest,

heart and stroke illness in Scotland. More at bikeathon.scot

If you’re after something a little more gruelling however, you might fancy your chances

at completing the HIGHLAND HIKE CHALLENGE on 24 JUN, a 100km endurance

challenge in teams of 3--5, walking a scenic route from Inverness to Ullapool in 24

hours. Ouch. There are also 50km and 25km options. Still ouch.

Finally a word for the INVERNESS ABC 20TH ANNIVERSARY SHOW [2]  at

IRONWORKS on 28 MAY. With GB seemingly producing world champion boxers every

other week, this might unveil some stars of the future.

    35/48CABARET > COMEDY > DANCE > DRAMA > MUSICALS > MORE > 35

     It Takes Two…

More THEATRE features and events at: whatsonhighlands.com

Some enticing shows coming to town this month, none more so than the

irresistible dance moves of VINCENT SIMONE & FLAVIA CACACE in THE LAST

TANGO at EDEN COURT from 01–04 JUN. The Strictly… stars are breathtakingly

accomplished at the most inherently seductive of dances as they’ll no doubt

demonstrate in a “is it getting hot in here?” kind of way. This is their last evertour together too, so don’t miss this opportunity to see the greatest of moves

    performed with elegant passion.

A couple of interesting one-man shows are coming in the form of A DIVINE COMEDY

[1] (EC, 02 JUN & ARDROSS, 03 JUN) and UNDER MILK WOOD [2] (04 JUN). The

former sees the always welcome return of MIKE MARAN with his own adaptation of

Dante’s 700 year old The Divine Comedy , a poetic creation that underpins just about

all theatre and literature that has followed, it still resonates today as demonstrated in

this production which sees Maran join Dante through Inferno, Purgatorio and Paradiso

in the quest for the meaning of love. If it’s anything near as good as Maran’s previousItalia‘n’Caledonia  or his take on Captain Corelli’s Mandolin  then we’re in for a treat.

And we’re expecting Under Milk Wood  to be just as rewarding, particularly since it’s

performed by GUY MASTERSON, nephew of Richard Burton whose rendition of Dylan

Thomas’ classic is universally acknowledged as the standard against which all others

must be judged. This is Masterson’s fourth visit to Eden Court and previous shows

like Shylock  and Animal Farm  have shown his talent for immersing an audience in a

multi-character creation all on his own. There are no less than 69 of them in Thomas’

bawdily magnificent tale of a day in the world of the town of Llareggub and, having

performed this over 1500 times, Masterson has it honed to rich perfection.

There’s splendid comedy in Under Milk Wood , but if you prefer your laughs from

more conventional stand-up, you can’t go wrong with rising star BILLY KIRKWOOD

[3] who comes to EDEN COURT on 10 JUN. Award winning comic – and the voice of

Insane Championship Wrestling , Kirkwood has been described as a ruder Glaswegian

    version of Peter Kay.

Old Edinburgh has been well documented theatrically in recent months and after the

excellent I Am Thomas , now comes MURDER – JUST WHAT THE DOCTOR ORDERED

[4] (EC, 15 JUN) set in the world of 19th century Auld Reekie and the dark doings of

body snatchers Burke and Hare. Isosceles Productions make a welcome to return afterthe success of On Our Way to Lisbon , The Haunters  and many other great shows.

Finally some home grown and local productions at EDEN COURT, namely: SEUSSICAL

THE MUSICAL  (17/18 JUN) and EDEN COURT COLLECTIVE’s contribution to the

NTS EXCHANGE FESTIVAL  (29 JUN), both of which you can read more about on

P15; a couple of shows from TFX  in the form of A NIGHT ON BROADWAY  (12

JUN) showcasing the best song & dance routines from a host of great musicals

    and SPECTACULAR, SPECTACULAR (20 JUN) featuring four plays from five classes;

CAIRNGORM DANCE SCHOOL (26 JUN) & LAMDA MUSICAL THEATRE SHOWCASE

(27 JUN). Each demonstrating how the venue is at the heart of young creativeopportunity here and making government budget cutting all the more shameful.

    Castle Tavern

    1 View Place, Inverness 01463 718 178

Last month as we were tucking into

our tapas at La Tortilla, we watchedout of the window as tourists took

in the finest of views from the

castle before heading off in search

of a drink. And, without exception

the place they were all making for

was The Castle Tavern at the end

of the street, our most beautifully

situated hostelry. It’s a tiny pub,

but makes great use of the space

with outside tables on a terrace

that lets you see the Great Glen,

Ben Wyvis and the River Ness all

without moving from your seat. No

wonder it’s such a magnet for both

    visitors and locals.

    Something else that ensures the

    place’s popularity is the food,

resulting in it being ranked as one

of the ten best places to eat in

    Inverness, an accolade that has

us moseying along to see if it really

can hold its own alongside the

    city’s increasingly assured dining

competitors. And we pick a perfect

day for it. While the rest of the

land is in the grip of a heatwave,

Inverness is predictably, just a little

bit warmer than freezing, but clearblue skies make the view from the

    Tavern terrace pretty breathtaking,

the reason no doubt why most of

the outside tables are taken up by

    tourists.

    Ducking inside, past the lifesize

    model of iconic whisky figure

    Johnnie Walker (something that

should be copied by every pub on

the planet in much the same waythat barbers shops have poles, and

    pawnbrokers gold balls) we find

    that while the upstairs restaurant

is closed, we can eat in the bar. It’s

a compact room, but the half dozen

    tables are surprisingly spacious.

    And the welcome from barman,

    waitress and manageress is such

that you’re put instantly at ease.

It’s clear that this is definitely the

kind of joint where you could swiftly

    become a much-loved regular.

Regulars of old seem to include

plenty of footballers if the pictures

on the wall are anything to go by.

One in particular from the seventies

    where everyone has either facial

hair or a perm is alone worth avisit, demonstrating as it does that

    football survived perfectly well,

thank you very much, without such

    new fangled nonsense as healthy

diets, sobriety and any sense of

    sartorial elegance.

And so to the food. There’s a

special offer all day where you can

get two mains for £11.95, but we

choose instead to select from theexpansive menu. All the usual pub

favourites are on there and a check

    on the Tavern’s website suggests

that the menu itself hasn’t changed

    for years. Laziness or confidence?

As we soon find out, it’s the latter.

    My buddy’s Bruschetta   sets

    the standard immediately. It’s

    something offered by almost every

place in town, primarily because it

makes for a good profit margin, but

    here they’ve actually done justice

to it, a delicious mix of fresh

    tomatoes and spring onions,

    balsamic vinegar, and warm

    bread providing an impressive twist

    on a traditional favourite.

My Tiger Tails   are another menu

    staple, but again they’re turned

    into something rather exquisite.

    Plump butterflied tiger prawn tails

    are served with honey mustard

    dressed leaves, balsamic tomato

salsa and toasted ciabatta, asimple combination, but one that’s

absolutely nailed by whoever’s in the

    kitchen. The prawns are perfectly

cooked, the salsa providing a zingy

    counterpoint to their sweet moist

flesh and the ciabatta a cut above

    the usual bland factory product.

Home made? If not, then certainly

    tastes like it.

My companion’s main course is a

Veggie Burger , often a true test of

how inventive a chef can be. Sadly

in this case it’s nothing more than

    workmanlike (albeit substantial),

    though special praise is reserved

    for the accompanying skin-on chips

    which “are managing to taste

    somewhere between chip and

roast potato” and are judged highly

    recommended.

My main of Venison   is far more

    of a towering success. Almost

literally since it’s piled high on the

plate, a style of presentation that

isn’t going to win any awards for

    elegance, but which somehow suits

the robust nature of the dish itself.

A hefty chunk of what is described

    as “West coast silverside cut

venison steak” sits atop a grainmustard mash and an interesting

mix of parsnip, swede, carrot and

    mini sweetcorn, the whole brought

together with a red wine, rosemary

    and cranberry gravy.

The meat itself could be the best-

    cooked venison I’ve ever had.

    Medium rare as requested and

    perfectly seared on the outside,

not too gamey, but packed with

far more flavour than often bland

    beefsteak. A rich dish, balanced

skilfully by the fruitiness of the

    cranberries and the creamy yet

    tangy mash. The accompanying

    Windswept Blonde from the award-

    winning selection of real ales

    complements things nicely.

    As we’ve noted many times

before, puddings are often a real

    disappointment, being either

bought in or bereft of any real

    technical ability, invariably because

chefs just don’t like dessertsmuch. The ones here may well be

    accompanied by that weariest of

“flourishes” in the form of the dread

    physalis and sliced strawberry,

but they’re better than that and

they know it. So my companion’s

    Drambuie Cranachan   is a fine

    example of this indulgent Scottish

    creation, cream, raspberries

and the liqueur given texture byoatmeal, the whole raised on that

    pedestal marked “what’s not to

    like?”

At the Castle Tavern they offer a

    different flavoured cheesecake every

    day, itself an admirable commitment

and on the day of our visit, it’s Mango

    Cheesecake . The fruit’s contribution

is confined to flavour rather than

any notable physical presence, butsomehow it works even better that

way, making for a gloriously silky

    topping, with subtle yet distinctive

    flavours of the tropics.

An excellent meal then in that

rarest of places, a truly welcoming

    local with genuinely friendly

staff. If anywhere does justice to

    those magnificent views, it’s the

    Castle Tavern. All accolades fullydeserved.
