25th of each month!

President’s Message: Let me begin with some of our Month of May activities: Henrik Ibsen participated in the “Søttende Mai” parade in Brooklyn with 16 adults and 7 children. We had a great time, the weather cooperated to its fullest. Nearly all of us carried a Norwegian flag, so we were notice-able from a distance. In a true to Nor-wegian parade custom, we lowered the flags when passing the review stand in order to show our recognition of the 17th May Committee. Of the Sons of Norway Lodges, we, Henrik Ibsen, received a third place. Following the address by Boomer Esiason we went as usual over to the Swedish Club for a bowl of Lapskaus and something to help it down. The only hitch in the day was that the return trip was somewhat delayed as the bus turned up some 40 minutes late. On May the 21st, our monthly meet-ing, we had a surprise visitor Richard Deininger from Gulfstream Lodge, Florida. We also had a second visitor Zone One Director Kris Rasmussen, and he filled us in on Zone One activi-ties. The first item on our agenda was to initiate David Bartow together with

his daughter Oriya into our Lodge. Although Oriya’s membership is de-fined as “Unge Venner”, I included her in the procedure as she has shown a tremendous enthusiasm for the Nor-wegian Culture. Norwegian to English translation. Please find below some help in order for you to read Norwegian Papers using your computers and the Internet. There are a couple of requirements before you begin incorporating the Norwegian to English Translation. We all have our favorite WEB home page, but if you want to incorporate this procedure you have to make GOOGLE as your WEB Home Page. On the GOOGLE page, in the upper left corner you find the word WEB, count 8 words towards right and you will get ”more” click on that. And the three words down is ”Translate” , click on that and you will find on the lower half of the page ”Translate From:” Norwegian and Translate To: ”English”. That is it. When you now go the GOOGLE WEB page open up a Norwegian Newspaper and click on translate in the upper right Corner and bingo you get the English translation. Remember now this is word by word translation so you may have to shuffle the text around a bit to make it correct English.

About the upcoming yard sale June 19th, you are probably doing some spring cleaning about now. Find some things you really don't need, and put them aside for the yard sale. We need to raise

funds for the Lodge. Some suggestions for yard sale items are:

• Electronics • Cell Phones • Toys and Games • Kitchen stuff • Jewelry • Books • Paperbacks • Videos • DVDs • Music CDs • Software CDs • LPs

As reported on News Community Newspapers Nords on parade! By Shavana Abruzzo Tuesday, May 18, 2010 8:09 PM EDT Pint-sized nationalists Christopher Lageraaen and his sister, Shannon Lageraaen, sat on a sidewalk on Fifth Avenue in Bay Ridge, each holding a flag of Norway a red eye-pleaser with an indigo blue Scandinavian cross outlined in white waiting for the action to begin. By Proud Grandpa Asbjorn Lageraaen

How the fights start

A woman was standing nude, looking in the bedroom mirror. She was not happy with what she saw and said to her husband,

"I feel horrible; I look old, fat and ugly. I really need you to pay me a compliment.'

The husband replied, 'Your eyesight's damn near perfect.'

And then the fight started.....

T onight I find myself in New Jersey. It has been a busy

week starting with the Zone 6 cau-cus which was held in the Washing-ton Lodge’s new cultural center.

On Thursday, I started for the Syttende Mai parade in Brooklyn. My first stop was again the Washington Lodge Cultural Center where the Norwegian Ambassa-dor and several members of the Fairfax city council and the Mayor were in attendance for a special art show. Then further North to the Pleasant Point lodge for a regular Friday night meeting. Saturday was a day of SON rest but I did go to Hoboken to help out one of my Daughters. On Sunday it was off to the big Brooklyn Parade which, as usual was a lot of fun. I followed up the parade by starting back South and enjoying dinner with my former lodge, Noreg in Marlboro NJ. Tomor-row I will be up early catching the Cape May Ferry so I can make it back to Virginia Beach in time for my final Syttende Mai function. My suitcase will remain full as I am off to Clearwater FL for the Syttende Mai Regatta. Life is great if you have the strength. I am sorry to report that one of District 3’s great lions has passed away. John Kaare Haugen who played a vi-tal role in our organization for over 50 years recently passed away in Norway. Please read about him on the website as well as in the 3DT. The District Convention is drawing near. Needless to say, both your Convention Committee as well as the District Board is very busy these days making sure all the loose ends are gathered up. Keep checking the web-site for any late breaking news. http://3dsofn.org/newsletter/convention.html There was an article on Yahoo news today concerning 200,000 not for profit organizations who are about to lose their tax free status because they didn’t file their 990 form. We only need to file the form annually so please don’t forget to file it on time. Our web site continues to service more and more visi-tors. The May numbers through the 17th are over 172 daily visitors. This may be the month the average will break 150 daily visitors. We have seen over the past few months that the events pages are the most visited. As we go into the summer months the web site will be

your best source to get information on your events out to the rest of the District membership. Our web master Jim has made some very positive changes to the photo gallery so check it out. http://www.3dsofn.org/photogallery/index.html D3 is still leading the order in Membership growth even if we are now in a negative position. We have lost .03% of our membership through April 30 but that still remains the best. Compared to 2009, we have slightly slowed down the number of local lodge mem-bers leaving voluntary and we have reduced the volun-tary loss of 999 members by over 20%. This is a very good sign as 2009 was a bad year for members leaving voluntarily. If we can hold our own over the summer we should be in a good position to show a total gain as the fall bazaars normally recruit a large number of new members. I have really enjoyed the privilege of being your Presi-dent for the past two years. If I didn’t get to your lodge it wasn’t that I didn’t want to make the visit it was be-cause there just wasn’t time. I did get to every Zone and 27 lodges which was very enjoyable. While we saw completion of some significant projects during the past 2 years there are still many areas where we can improve our District. Investments in time, effort and money that were made in 2008 and 2009 will continue to benefit the District for years to come. I want to thank all of you volunteers out there who worked so hard for your lodges over the past two years. Without your efforts we would have been dead in the water. I also want to thank the 3D board of directors for the huge number of hours they spent doing our busi-ness and the support they have given me. Tusen Takk. See you in Harrisburg!!! May peace and harmony prevail within our lodge. Fraternally Ralph Peterson President District 3

A short history of the Norwegian Flag

In 1821, it was determined how the Norwegian flag should look like.

In 1821, it was not customery that countries had their own national flag. The warlords had their own flags and the Royalties had their flags. It is not known what the earliest Norwegian flag looked like. But a banner has been found in Scotland, specifically at a Casle Dunvegan on ”The Isle of Skye” and it is believed to have been brought there by King Harald Haråde. It has a yellow lion with crown and an ax on a red back ground, it was identified to be from around the year 1100 and it is identical to today's royal flag, it is believed that all Norwegian kings used it as their standard.. The lion was the symbol of the king. To make it more specific to Norway, the medieval kings placed a silver ax in the front paws of the lion. The ax was the symbol that killed Olav the Holy of Stiklestad. It symbolize the connection between "Norway's eternal king" and the Parliament. From 1600 Norway used the Danish flag, because of its union with Denmark. In 1814 Norway broke away from Denmark and the independent Norwegian state demanded its own separate national flag and throne successor, Prince Christian Frederik gave permission to the Norwegian lion into Dannebrog, the Danish flag, in the upper left field. The independence from Denmark did not last long before Norway was again in a union with another country, Sweden. In 1818 Sweden/Norway received a common flag, blue and yellow Swedish flag, and in the upper left field was a white cross on a red background. A member of the Norwegian parliament, namely Fredrik Meltzer, designed in 1821 the Norwegian flag as we know it today. Because of the just concluded union with Denmark and the new union with Sweden, Meltzer took elements from both of these flags. Denmark's red and white colors and Sweden's blue color was added. In 1844, Norway was still in union with Sweden, and the country got a union label introduced in the upper left corner in both Norwegian and Swedish flags. The Union Emblem received the nickname "herring salad" (sildesalat). A growing opposition to the union emblem grew and it became very unpopular and a "pure flag" became a demand from the Liberals. The Parliament passed the pure flag law in 1892 and then it became legal without a royal sanction. It was introduced on 1 January 1893 as the national flag and for Merchant Ships with split tongue.
