4-H ACHIEVEMENT IN NORTH CAROLINA

Geared to fit the economic, social, physical, and Spiritualgrowth and development needs of the individual and the needs of thecommunity, 4-H serves to help young people grow into better indivi-duals in a better community, in a better state, and in a better world. Here in North Carolina where 4-H has grown from an idea into theworld's largest rural youth organization, we point with pride to theimagination and ability of the pioneers who laid the foundation for anorganization that has captivated the interest of people in all parts ofthe world. It's greatest achievement is reflected in the lives of peopletrained to serve as good citizens in their community. This specialedition of the 4-H Ward gives a brief summary of the achievements ofNorth Carolina's state and national 4-H winners during 1962. Whilethese records are obviously superior to the average, they do give ina true sense something of the scope and effectiveness of 4—H Club workin its program of training boys and girls in the art of better living.

Every person in North Carolina may well be proud of the achieve-ments of our 4—H members in county, state, national, and internationalaffairs. Few states can boast of a finer record of achievement. Recordsof this nature do not just happen. They are achieved because of theuntiring efforts and consecreated leadership of Extension workers andlocal volunteer leaders who have given more than they were expectedto give in the way of service and influence in the direction of 4—Hactivities. The sympathetic understanding of parents interested inobtaining the best training possible for their boys and girls, and themoral and financial support of individuals and business organizationshave helped boys and girls to make these achievements.

The information given in this report deals primarily with achieve-ment in 4-H project and related activity. Equally significant achieve-ments have been accomplished in the areas of citizenship training, leadership activity, wildlife conservation, 4-H health improvement,4-H Church Sunday programs, statewide recreational training, andparticipation in state, regional, national, and international activities. These have served to open new doors of opportunity to broaden horizons,to provide challenging experiences, knowledge to sharpen the imagina-tion, and skills to challenge the ingenuity of young people. Such a pro—gram has touched and influenced the lives of about one out of every fiverural boys and girls in North Carolina eligible for 4-H membership.
