~ Business Manager’s Report ~ Brothers and Sisters,
The November elections are fast approaching. Even though the election
propaganda can be overwhelming, this election will prove to be very
important to labor. Not only is it important to keep a president in the office
that is labor friendly, our local elections are equally as important as they
affect us closer to home. Knowing that we have an anti-labor Governor in
place and a House of Representatives-that we probably don’t have a chance of
turning, it is crucial that we vote to retain a Democratic controlled Senate.
While social issues affect the individual, the Local Union should only address
the issues that directly affect your paycheck. Labor only had one line of
defense last year; the Senate. They were constantly bombarded with anti-
labor bills from the House, which was supported by the Governor. If we
would lose the Senate this year, we could find ourselves losing collective
bargaining rights and working conditions, much like the states of Wisconsin
and Indiana. I encourage all members to support your paycheck and vote for
those individuals that support you.
For those members, who have yet to register to vote, you have until the
October 27th deadline to do so. Visit the Iowa Secretary of State website to
download a registration form at www.sos.iowa.gov. For those that are
registered already, you will find enclosed in this issue an absentee ballot
request form. I urge you to fill this out and return to your county auditor to
ensure that your vote will be counted, even if you can’t make it to the polls on
election day.
In Solidarity, Kevin L. Clark

Apprenticeship News
Classroom related instruction has resumed for the 2012/2013 school year. Beginning last year, the new
NJATC “Core” curriculum was implemented with the first-year apprentices. The “core” curriculum will be
phased-into the Inside Wireman apprenticeship program until each year of the apprenticeship program is
utilizing the ‘core” curriculum. This year all first-year and second-year Inside Wireman apprentices are
experiencing the new NJATC “Core” curriculum. Incorporated into the “Core” curriculum are several hands
-on applications that are administered to the apprentice in each year of their apprenticeship. These hands-on
applications are basic skills that evaluate the proficiency of each apprentice according to their level of
training within the apprenticeship program. Here are just a few examples from the extensive list of
applications:
Installing a switched duplex receptacle
Installing a 3-way & 4-way switching system
Installing a retrofit “old-work” electrical box
Fishing an insulated sheetrock wall for flexible metal conduit
Installing a recessed luminaire
Trimming-out an electrical panel
Connecting a dual-voltage, wye-wound motor
