P r e s i d e n t ’ s M e s s a g e

It is almost over! My last month as ASHRAE Philly Chapter president is here, and we

are going out with a bang. Three exciting events will occur from May 9 through May 18.

Our last chapter meeting of 2018-2019 will be held at the 2nd

Story Brewing Company in

Old City on May 9th. Elizabeth Baldwin, PE, will be giving an update on Philadelphia

building codes. Elizabeth is the Director of the Development Division at the Philadelphia

Department of Licenses and Inspections.

Our annual golf outing will be hosted at the DuPont Country Club on May 13 starting at

12:30 pm. Lunch, dinner and prizes will be offered to participants. I would like to thank

Tim Reinking for his outstanding work in running the outing year after year.

Our Young Engineer of ASHRAE Spring Social event is being held on May 18. We will

be attending the Philadelphia Union soccer game at Talen Energy Stadium as the Union

host the Seattle Sounders FC. If interested, please reach out to Dan Brown, our YEA

Committee Chair.

To sum up the year, we tried some new things in regards to meeting times, venues and

topics that I feel were very popular. We increased overall chapter meeting attendance

by 73% as compared to our 2017-2018 year. I hope this trend continues next year. Our

overall chapter membership growth, however, was stagnant. We really appreciate

feedback in regards to what we can improve on or what we can offer as a chapter to

increase interest. My goal of 1,000 LinkedIn followers for the ASHRAE Philadelphia

Chapter page fell short by 761 followers! We will do a better job in the future to provide

timely updates to the page as well as providing higher quality content.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at all of our May events!

Advance registration and pre-payment are required before the meetings.

We need your attendance! If we are below our guaranteed level for attendees at our meetings, our treasury could be negatively effected.

Our programs are designed around the membership’s input and we all need to support these meetings to maintain

a strong/informed association. We hope to see you at our next meeting. Please come out and support our Chapter!

Green “Sustainable” HVAC Design

Rear Admiral Ann C. Phillips, USN (Ret) is a member of the Center for Climate and Security’s Advisory Board. A Surface

Warfare Officer, Rear Admiral Phillips has served in every warfare group of the Surface Navy: Destroyers, Aircraft

Carriers, Amphibious, and Replenishment Ships. During her 31 years on active duty she commissioned and commanded

level rise across the Hampton Roads region that could be used as a template by other regions facing similar challenges.

Now an independent consultant, she continues to work to address sea level rise and climate impact on national security

at the regional, state, and national level, and speaks about climate security and adaptation strategies to a broad range of

audiences. She also serves on local, regional, and national non-profit Boards, and coordinates an evolving wetlands

restoration project for her neighborhood in Norfolk, Virginia.

Note from the CTT Committee

As the data center market continues to grow, server side environmental requirements continue to be relaxed;

space setpoints are rising, allowing more energy efficient strategies to supplant traditional direct mechanical

cooling.

One innovate approach that has gained traction over the last decade is indirect evaporative cooling. Using an air

-to-air heat exchanger to separate outdoor airflow from the return air allows dry bulb economizer operation

without the need to aggressively filter the incoming airstream. Using evaporative (or in some designs, adiabatic)

pre-cooling in the secondary airstream provides most or all the cooling capacity when dry bulb temperatures are

above economizer threshold. Any remaining load is then handled via traditional methods.

The attached ASHRAE article from 2011 provides a great summary of the concepts and design considerations of

this approach.

Indirect Air-Side Economizer Cycle Data Center Heat Rejection

ASHRAE Journal, March 2011

The electric power consumed to manage our digital dependency is growing, and so is the resulting by-product: heat.

HVAC engineers are tasked with selecting mechanical systems that strike a balance between high reliability and low

life-cycle cost. This article explores a cooling/heat rejection strategy that is gaining acceptance and achieves a

balance of reliability and energy efficiency.

Indirect Air-Side Economizer

The indirect air-side economizer (IASE) cycle uses outdoor air to reject heat, but the outdoor air never enters the

process or space. The IASE uses an air-to-air heat exchanger (HX) to transfer data center heat to a separate outdoor

airstream (“scavenger air”). Figure 1 illustrates one type of IASE system that uses a plate-type air-to -air HX.
