I Left My Heart in San Francisco Paper and Blade Looking in: The famous song and Valentine’s Day have inspired our first diY project. The four artists working on Paper and Blade have each been inspired by their own personal histories. Mayumi Hamanaka’s work combines lost photographs from the Japanese Tsunami along with her own photographic works. Kai Margarida-‐Ramirez has combined images from her grandmother’s home with her intricate handiwork. Do you have a connection to this city or to another place? What image does this connection make you think of? Tools:
-‐ map -‐ pencil -‐ scissors or razor blade -‐ glue -‐ one sheet of paper (big enough to cover your heart)
How to do it yourself: Find a map of your place. (If you don’t have access to a map, find one online.)
What do you think of when you see this place?
Find an image -‐ search online, make a sketch, or take a photograph.
Cut out the image and glue it to the map.
Draw a heart over your map. Make sure it's big enough to go around the image.
Cut it out! Cut the outline of the heart and your image.
Be careful. Do not cut away any of the parts that touch your heart.
It’s a good idea to place a piece of cardboard or a cutting mat under the paper before you cut, so that you don’t damage your table.
Glue your heart onto another piece of paper.
Frame it, display it, cherish it! Have fun!
