I hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable Fall. Much like last year, you are able to purchase your yearly membership in the HOA as well as pay for your boat storage, on our website. As always, if there is anything you feel should be on our website, have any interesting news items/articles of local interest or you have any comments or feedback, please email me at [email protected]. In addition, if you would like pictures of your house, once it is safe to re-enter our community, please provide your Mariner's Cove address, and we will reply with pictures of your house. Please note this is via email only.

If there is anything you would like to see in the Beacon, or on the website, please email me at [email protected].

NOTES FROM THE PRESIDENT- TIM KAY

Welcome Summer! The boats are in, the bay is getting crowded and Rt. 1 is a nightmare. Summer is officially here! Work has begun on Sussex to improve drainage prior to paving and that only took 5 years. Unfortunately Jennifer Lee is a disaster and probably won’t even be considered until next year, the pool cabana which should have been completely remodeled by now is somewhere on the back burner and a playground for kids?? You know the answer….maybe someday. We, as a board, continue, sometimes relentlessly, to try to get improvements made here at the Cove and are usually met with, “it’s not in the budget for this year.” Well, the board can only try so many times. It’s really up to the residents to demand that things change. You can do that by e-mailing our manager and the regional manager. The more residents they hear from the more upset they’ll get and MAYBE something will happen to improve conditions here at Mariners Cove. I will still be filing a complaint with the AG’s office regarding potholes and the temporary fixes which are already beginning to deteriorate. The rest is up to you. I will include the addresses of the manager and regional manager at the end of this report. Board elections will be held at our August general membership meeting and nominations are due by our July meeting which will be held on Sat. , July 9 at 10:00 AM in the clubhouse. There will be 3 openings on the board and nominations should be forwarded to Linn Spicer by e-mail or phone; [email protected] or 302-947- 2950. You may nominate yourself or someone else but all nominations must be to Linn by July 9. If no one chooses to run the board will only have six members. This is your opportunity to help make a difference. You need not be a full-time resident but must be an HOA member.

VICE PRESIDENT- DON FAHY

As the summer starts to hit us and we are getting our yards cleaned up and boats ready for the season, it is easy to overdo it a bit and before you know it, sunburn may not be the only thing that may be making you a bit unwell. You may be experiencing heat exhaustion. And, if so, you can easily do things to prevent it. According to WebMD, heat exhaustion occurs when the body loses salts and fluids from being exposed to high temperatures for long periods of times. But, what exactly is a long period of time? That differs from person to person and varies by age, gender and ethnicity. Additionally, those on medications, such as diuretics for high blood pressure, are more prone to feeling the effects of heat exhaustion more so than those who are not. Signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion include fatigue, dizziness, dehydration and shortness of breath. As people, we tend to ignore these during times of outdoor work as we expect to overexert ourselves, but we should at least be thinking twice during times of excessive heat. Ways to prevent heat exhaustion include:

Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.                     Use a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or more.                     Drink extra fluids.  At least 8 glasses of water of day is the daily recommendation.   However, this is the minimum.  Gatorade is also a great way to keep hydrated.                     At least two hours before any outdoor work, drink an extra two full eight (8) glasses of water.                     Avoid caffeine and alcoholic beverages before or during exertion at times of high temperature.

Heat exhaustion is not the same as heat stroke, but heat exhaustion can lead to heat stroke if left ignored. Heat stroke is a greater health condition that can lead to hospitalization other serious health complications. Have a great and healthy summer!

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH- DEBBIE COVERDALE

The Neighborhood Watch Members are patrolling our streets, keeping a watchful eye open for any unusual activity. They can be recognized by the placards on their vehicles which read, “Neighborhood Watch Patrol.” In order for the Watch Members to have clear visibility around homes while driving by, we suggest the following:

Have bushes trimmed on all sides of the home.Remove any debris that could impair a clear view on all sides of the home.

Don’t Invite Trouble! Keep your grass and yard cut and maintained so as not to imply your home has been vacated. We can all do our part to keep our Community safe. Report any suspicious activity to a Watch Member patrolling your street. Neighbor by neighbor and street by street, we can keep our Mariners Cove Community safe. You may contact Debbie Coverdale, Chairperson of the “Neighborhood Watch Patrol.”

DMHOA

DMHOA meets monthly on the 4th Monday of the month at Angola Beach and Estates. The meeting is open to all. As a member of our HOA, you are automatically a member of DMHOA.

ACTIVITES- MIKE DEMACRO

Summer is officially here, finally! We have many activities scheduled for the balance of this year. We schedule these events to raise money for your community and participation has been very low. If you are able to volunteer for an event or are interested in joining the committee please email me at [email protected]. You are not required to be part of the activities committee to assist with any function. Hope to hear for you!

Boat Yard- ED OLLIS

One of the amenities provided by the Homeowners Association is onsite watercraft storage. Last year more Homeowners than ever took advantage of this amenity and the boat storage lot was completely filled to capacity. I would encourage anyone that is interested in onsite storage to contact me as early as possible since storage is limited and is only available on a first come first served basis to paid HOA members. The boat storage lot is located at the foot of Knoll Way. Lot storage is $35 and covers the year-round maintenance of the boat yard. I will begin taking space reservations April 15.

What is a Home Owner’s Association?

If you were to visit Wikipedia, you would see a homeowner’s association (HOA) is:

a corporation formed by a real estate developer for the purpose of marketing, managing, and selling of homes and lots in a residential subdivision. It grants the developer privileged voting rights in governing the association, while allowing the developer to exit financial and legal responsibility of the organization, typically by transferring ownership of the association to the homeowners after selling off a predetermined number of lots. Membership in the homeowners association by a residential buyer is typically a condition of purchase; a buyer isn't given an option to reject it.

However, your Mariner’s Cove HOA is far from that. Unlike the example shown above, membership is entirely voluntary. We cannot tell you what color your shutters should be. Rather, we are more akin to a social organization. That is what I am here to discuss today; why you should join.

Your HOA does many things for you, all for the low yearly cost of $20.00. These benefits include the following:

- Quarterly Beacon newsletters which keep you apprised of community happenings and often include fun recipe ideas or word searches.

- The Yearly Family Picnic, held at the end of August

However, were you aware of the following benefits?

- If you are a member of the HOA and we are involved in arbitration with ELS, and a monetary judgment is awarded, you are a beneficiary of this award.

- $3.00 of your membership is given to DMHOA (Delaware Manufactured Homeowner’s Association). This automatically makes you an at-large member. DMHOA holds monthly meetings to inform homeowner’s of new trends and ingoing legislation which affects you.

- Your HOA is the conduit between us as residents and the Office, and can work with the Office to ensure the concerns of residents are addressed and possible issues are resolved before they become nuisances or problems.

- Your HOA has a wonderful activities committee. This committee plans numerous events for your yearly such as the pancake breakfast and shrimp night. You can be involved in making these activities a success and help to craft new activities by coming out the meetings or offering to help at events.

- The sense of pride in knowing you are a part of a social organization whose goal is improving your life here in Mariner’s Cove

- The communal nature of knowing you have wonderful neighbors and friends, who want to get to know you.

I hope these few short reasons give you a sense of what your HOA does for you. My father, Mike Gray, and the new President Tim Kay (along with the board) have worked and are working hard for you. $20.00 and/or a little bit of your time can go a long way towards making Mariner’s Cove a better place to live.
