Jerry, as he is known by friends and colleagues, enhanced many of

Elman’s techniques and added valuable new techniques which currently are used by thousands of hypnotherapist all over the world. Every day countless people worldwide are using these techniques to improve their per-sonal lives in a great variety of ways.

Thank you, Jerry, for your education and the techniques that are now

empowering so many people in their lives.

A fundamental conclusion of the new physics also acknowledges that the observer creates the reality. As observers, we are personally involved with the creation of our own reality. Physicists are being forced to admit that

the universe is a “mental” construction.

Foreword

When I first started learning hypnotism back in the late 40s there was very little written material about how to do hypnosis. Most of the books back then were listed for sale in the back of mag-azines in the classified sections. There were no videos or CDs. Learning was purely experimental. Over the years since then as more and more hypnotist came into the profession first books, then audiotapes, then CDs began to appear. Today, the hypnosis learning resources one has are almost infinite. The only problem today is most books seem to be rewrites of earlier books and do not offer much new information.

Ina Oostrom is definitely an exception to that rule. I remember

winning the first of my class many years ago she was suffering from a disease that I call "The Hypnotism Fever." She was so excited about what she was going to be able to do and how many people she was going to be able to help with her new skill it was hard to keep her still in class. It's obvious to me that over the years she has en-hanced her skills tremendously and is now an excellent hypnosis in-structor and after reading this book she is an excellent writer.

People frequently ask me to write a forward to the book they've written but I am very selective in doing this. Unless I consider a book will add information at the professional level I generally de-cline. Ina's book is a joy to read. It is written so you can actually understand what she is talking about in a clear and usable manner.

It is said that eventually the teacher learns from his student and

that's very true in this case. This book is well-written, easy to read and terrifically informative. If you want to enhance your hypnosis education and learn how to use techniques taught in a simple to learn step-by-step technique you really need to have this book in your library. I look forward to reading future contributions by Ina as, like I teach my students, I never want to stop learning.

Congratulations Ina on a wonderful book that I know will be

well accepted in the hypnosis community and for any others who are considering getting into this work. You remove the fear, mys-tery and misconceptions of the profession that many people have.

The lack of global acceptance of hypnosis is one of the major

challenges that hypnotherapists are facing – and generations of hyp-notists before us. There are many misconceptions and misunder-standings about hypnosis and people often think about hypnosis and hypnotherapy as a last resort for help.

A book on the subject of hypnosis that is not only an interesting

and informative read, but that also explains hypnosis/hypnotherapy so that anybody can understand it, Ina Oostrom with the co-authors of this book managed exactly that. Aside from many interesting his-torical and scientific information, she also believes that many things are possible in one single session and that is where I could not agree more with her. If you have ever thought of hypnosis as being a pos-sible solution for your problem(s), read this book! If you think that hypnosis is limited? Think again…and read this book!

I met Ina in 2012 for the first time and it was on the occasion of

my first OMNI Instructor training together with Gerald Kein. We immediately connected and her affinity for hypnosis and teaching were apparent from the beginning. This has led to many additional joint projects in marketing, journals, conventions as well as strate-gic business meetings. She is also greatly involved in charity work in Africa. She has done a lot to help people. With this book she con-tinues this tradition.

Ina is blessed with a great personality, dedicated to really helping

people. She believes whole heartedly in the true potential of hypno-sis and her first book on the subject proves just that.

Introduction

I have worked in this area a very long time, since I was a very young man. The evolution of hypnosis has actually been very slow. In my opinion, hypnosis is a great tool to assist people. - Gerald Kein.

Hypnosis is as old as humanity since it involves establishing se-lective thinking. In the case of hypnotherapy, we are given sugges-tions to the subconscious mind in order to cure a problem.

A properly trained and licensed health professional can address

mental health issues, as well as other medical problems from a psy-chosomatic perspective using the mind body connection.

Throughout the history of hypnosis, its use has been repressed

in a number of cases; still hypnosis is not yet fully embraced by the general public as a viable means for healing the mind and body. In the field of neuroscience, we no longer need to convince scientists that hypnosis is real and can have a major impact; scientists now make use of hypnosis for testing various conditions of the human mind. Furthermore, an increasing number of hospitals are using hypnosis either for problems such as irritable bowel syndrome and

pain elimination; moreover, some operations are performed with hypnosis as the sole anesthetic.

The use of hypnosis could dramatically reduce the cost of

healthcare. While it could be a viable means to prevent illness, it still it does not have the place it deserves. In the mind of many peo-ple, including physicians and dentists, hypnosis is considered ‘hocus pocus’ and not believable. That is contrary to extensive scientific research that has been conducted and the great results that have been established in many fields in relation to hypnosis. One of the major factors that hypnosis is not widely used in our society is the fact that it is not linked to an important business model which gen-erates large amounts of money. Money is the driving force behind much in our society, including the health industry. Whereas West-ern 'medicine' is unparalleled in history with regard to issue areas such as emergency, surgery, heart failure and such, the results for curing people from chronic diseases and illnesses such as cancer lag behind.

When you have a method that brings rapid relief to a patient in

terms of pain reduction or elimination using only the mind of the client, it is difficult to link such a process to a business model which generates income as a result of research. What if you can use self-hypnosis to teach children to be more in control of their own minds. There is no big corporate profitable business model behind that ei-ther.

So until will we find philanthropists who are seriously devoted

to the good of mankind, research in this field will remain insuffi-cient.

Since the days of Descartes, the human body has been researched as a machine that can be taken apart and repaired in a similar way a motor car would be repaired without taking into account the im-portant role of consciousness. Fortunately, the interaction between the mind and the body is being increasingly considered. The way our health system is organized unfortunately for a major part still rests upon the foundations that were established in the days of Des-cartes in the first half of the seventeenth century. ‘Cogito, ergo sum’ is the only truth he could find as the rest was all incertitude. Des-cartes proposed a mathematical method for finding certain knowledge step by step, a method on which the science had to be built on a certain fundament. His method, which made a clear divi-sion between matter and mind or between body and soul, was needed in order to build a science based on measurable knowledge. His idea about categorization of thought between philosophy and theology “became an unstated assumption of physics that no human qual-ities of consciousness, intention, emotion, mind or spirit can significantly influence a well-designed target experiment in physical reality.” 1 Profes-sor Tiller's research shows that “this assumption is no longer correct. We humans are much more than we think we are and Psychoenergetic Science continues to expand the proof of it.” 2 We see however that it is the patients themselves who just look for a way to get healed and who are educating themselves more and more. Moreover, medical universities are also increasingly incorporating the mind and body connection.

What is hypnosis?

In fact we cannot define exactly what hypnosis is. Scientists are

still trying to figure it out. Is it a state or is it a process? The one thing that is very important to realize is that hypnosis is a very nat-ural state of mind. You can enter this state naturally several times a day without even noticing. Some examples include: becoming emerged in music or a movie; being engrossed in your work; being so lost in thought while driving you almost miss the next exit. The latter we call highway hypnosis. This can happen when your nor-mal consciousness, i.e., the analytical part of your mind is engaged with a problem at work or a family issue while your subconscious mind is taking over the driving. For the subconscious mind your safety is of greater importance than finding the right exit. Being in hypnosis means being in a state of great focus, whereby critical and analytical thinking is less involved.

Through hypnosis we can understand who we truly are and

what we feel. Hypnosis is capable of amazing things. How hypnosis works is easily explained by using the working of a computer.

Page 19: Hypnosis the Key to€¦ · 5 This book is dedicated to Gerald Kein, one of the greatest hypnotists of our time and the person who kept the ideas of Dave Elman - the founder

When a human is born he/she has access to a basic operating system that takes care of important functions that are mostly exe-cuted automatically, such as breathing, regulating blood pressure and temperature and much more. A baby is like a new computer out of the box.

The young child starts a learning process through interaction

with other people and events taking place in their environment. It does so without being critical; a child absorbs information very eas-ily like a sponge. It is easy to install many different programs onto a computer so that it has the capacity to do different things. A child can very quickly learn different things. For a child, it is important to learn very fast; being critical about everything it learns would only hamper the speed of this learning process.

However, a human in fact does need something to filter infor-

mation. At around the age of seven, a child starts to develop critical thinking skills. However, it is important to realize that the way in which a child views the world is for a large part pre-determined by its family and the environment in which it grows up. The moment critical thinking starts, it already processes information through the filters that are, in part, installed by events and people from its sur-roundings.

You can compare critical thinking skills with the firewall of a

computer where it is determined what dataflow or program is al-lowed in and what must be blocked. This critical factor is at work most of the time without us being aware of it. To demonstrate this critical factor while you are reading this book we would like you to think about a square ball, blue grass, or purple snow. Do you accept

Page 20: Hypnosis the Key to€¦ · 5 This book is dedicated to Gerald Kein, one of the greatest hypnotists of our time and the person who kept the ideas of Dave Elman - the founder

H Y P N O S I S T H E K E Y T O S E L F - E M P O W E R M E N T • 1 9

the idea of a square ball, blue grass, or purple snow? At least it trig-gers the following thoughts: I never thought a square ball or blue grass could be possible; and I have never seen purple snow. So something happens in your mind that makes you attentive when a sentence is made with two pieces of information which do not match. You evaluate the information and probably reject the possi-bility of a square ball and in this case you reject it with your con-scious mind. Now pay attention. This way a lot of information that enters your mind will be rejected subconsciously; the filter in your mind will block it without you even being aware of it, because of all previous programming that went into your mind.

Critical thinking skills are important. It enables us to filter infor-

mation, determining what is relevant and what is not. However, this ‘firewall’ can also work against us, for instance when a person wants to quit smoking. Smoking is very much programmed into the subconscious; consequently, the subconscious believes the behavior is important, which makes quitting very hard, as the suggestion to quit smoking needs to be accepted by the subconscious. This is where hypnosis can help. Hypnosis can help you to change behavior permanently.

The basis for hypnosis is that the critical thinking aspect of the

conscious mind can be passed and acceptable suggestions can be es-tablished into the subconscious mind. In this way we can work on many mental and also physical issues that seem otherwise very dif-ficult or impossible to address.

In our work we use the definition of hypnosis as suggested by

Dave Elman:

Hypnosis is a state of mind in which the critical faculty is bypassed, thus making selective thinking possible.3

The definition of hypnosis is constantly evolving and no agreed

upon definition has been reached. From the early 1800s until our present day, the endeavor to define hypnosis has created much con-troversy. Some definitions refer to hypnosis as a procedure and other definitions describe hypnosis as a product.

On March 24th, 2014, the American Psychological Association

(APA) has accepted the following definitions:

Hypnosis: A state of consciousness involving focused attention and reduced pe-ripheral awareness characterized by an enhanced capacity for response to sug-gestion.4

Hypnotic induction: A procedure designed to induce hypnosis.4

Hypnotizability: An individual's ability to experience suggested alterations in physiology, sensations, emotions, thoughts, or behavior during hypnosis.4

Hypnotherapy: The use of hypnosis in the treatment of a medical or psycholog-ical disorder or concern.4

However, the need for future research is emphasized in or-der to completely discover the mechanism of hypnosis and all yet

unknown factors which make it possible; also, further research is required into its broad clinical application.

The matrusjka dolls inside of us

We always think that everything we ever lived through is forgotten or retained in the form of memory. As a matter of fact, it’s there; it’s part of us every mo-ment of every day. We live our life in the light of reflected action. The things we use to do we’re still doing in our minds – Dave Elman.

The things we have experienced in our life can have a great im-pact on how we feel in the present. People experiencing burn-out, depression, fears, or phobias do not always understand the root cause of their feelings. Although many of them might have an idea about the origin of their problem, thinking about it does not help them to address the issues which are bothering them. In most cases the client in fact does not have a clue what the real cause is of the problem.

Sounds astonishing? It is just a fact we encounter in our practice

when a client comes in with problem a, b, c, or z. We ask them what they think is causing the problem. After using a special technique we call regression, where the client can follow the trail of feelings back to the moment it first arose, we find that in most cases, this does not match the client’s preconceived ideas of where the problem came from. It does not mean that the events that the client thinks that are causing the problem are not important. In fact, often they can be seen as highly emotional events that strengthen the initial feeling of the problem. The initial problem, however, the seed that caused the negative feeling to grow, is usually planted at a young

age and often not considered significant in terms of the problem from the point of view of the adult.

We have to consider ourselves as a matroesjka doll – the Russian

doll that contains all the smaller dolls inside. Or, if you like, a tree that holds the ring of every year of the tree inside itself. If you peel off every layer, eventually you will hold in your hand the small sap-ling that was the origin of the big beautiful tree. As with a tree you can see in its rings the state of the season and years. You can read in the rings whether it was a good year with sufficient rain or whether it was plagued by drought.

In the human mind we find ourselves a representation of all our

ages similar to the small dolls inside the matroesjka. Using regres-sion techniques, we can speak with clients’ younger selves to ascer-tain whether they felt safe and comfortable or if something happened that shook their life to the core.

By ways of hypnosis we can go back and locate the origin of a

negative feeling that may be the cause of a problem in their adult life. Sometimes the client knows about the event and sometimes they do not. The subconscious mind can sometimes decide to block the memory. Further, from the perspective of the adult, the event that may have occurred at a young age may not seem significant in terms of being related to the problem. However, their younger self may be living out the negative event every day and it can be strengthened by subsequent events to a point that the person may experience fear, a phobia, depression, burn-out, or other symptoms.

In this regard Carl Jung said that what we do not allow to be-

come conscious in our life will become by itself our fate. In other

Page 25: Hypnosis the Key to€¦ · 5 This book is dedicated to Gerald Kein, one of the greatest hypnotists of our time and the person who kept the ideas of Dave Elman - the founder

words, if we do not deal with our issues from the past they can re-surface in the form of a problem.

When the conscious mind is preoccupied with everyday

thoughts, it does not notice the automatic programs and behaviors which are running the show from the background, and which are sprouted in the subconscious mind. These automatic behaviors rep-resent 95 percent of the reasons why people do the things they do. This is due to the enormous power of the subconscious mind – it can process 20 million bits of information per second, while the conscious mind can process 40 bits of information per second. This huge capacity for recording perceptual experiences plays in the background on automatic pilot. Usually people only become aware of these repetitive subconscious programs after someone or some-thing triggers a particular response.

Advance Praise

Over the course of my long professional career I have read many thousands of pages, literally millions of words, on the subject of hypnosis. Hypnosis the Key to Self-Empowerment deserves a leading place among the best introductory works on hypnosis I have ever encountered and contains abundant information of compelling interest even to veteran practitioners. Bonus: It is stylishly writ-ten and a pure pleasure to read. Highly recommended!

There are many, many books on Hypnosis out there – and some of them even have accurate information.

This book by Ina Oostrom, Simona Linskens and Vijay Sharma stands out as one of the most important books in recent years that correctly explains the World of Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy (where Hypnosis is used to produce pos-itive change – physically, mentally or spiritually)

It covers a vast range of topics that effect or are affected by hypnosis – quan-tum physics, the theory of the mind, belief systems, energy fields, DNA fac-tors, societal belief systems to name a sprinkling. The book also has an excellent overview of the history of modern hypnosis. Most importantly the authors set out to correct the imbalance (in literature, though perhaps not in practice) between the Ericsonian type of Hypnosis and the Hypnosis Tech-niques of David Elman. Both huge figures in the creation of modern hypnosis techniques, but as the authors point out, for some reason Dave Elman is pretty much absent in the literature of modern hypnosis, which is strange given that his methods and procedures are widely used by modern hypnotherapists.

This book seeks, among other things, to correct that imbalance with its expla-nations and descriptions of the many fields of hypnosis in current use that have come from the concepts of Dave Elman.

However the biggest reason to read this book is that it has its facts straight re-garding the concepts, methods and modern worlds of hypnosis, no matter what type or ‘brand’, and it is clear and direct in its explanations.

For anyone seeking an understanding of Hypnosis, Modern Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy, or for those of us who would like a straightforward, and truth-ful account of Modern Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy – this is the book to read. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Hypnosis, The Key to Self-Empowerment is an outstanding, comprehensive work that explains everything a non-hypnotist needs to know about the subject.

If you want to understand hypnosis, how it works, and what hypnosis can do to improve your mental and physical well-being, you need to read this book! Sean Michael Andrews, Award winning hypnotist, Master Practitioner of Neuro-Linguistic Programming and Certified Life Coach

This is one of the most comprehensive books on hypnosis I ever read – and I read a lot of them. The authors do not only dig into the single hypnosis tech-niques but they also give the big picture on how and why hypnosis works. Even if you didn’t know about hypnosis so far, after reading this book you will un-derstand the power of hypnosis and how it can help with a lot of mental and medical problems, how it helps children overcome their issues and a it discusses many other applications.

The authors describe the subject with many metaphors taken from daily life. So you can understand very easily how your subconscious mind affects your thoughts, emotions and body functions.

Numerous case studies nail down what the authors depict in their book. They show that the hypnotic state is not supernatural or manipulative but a natural state everyone experiences every day without knowing it.

This book is dedicated to one of the most underestimated hypnotists and founder of modern hypnosis, Dave Elman, and to Gerald Kein who enhanced Dave Elmans techniques in the last decades. Both deserve to be more recognized because their hypnosis methods and techniques are unique and helped thou-sands of people worldwide.

I met one of the authors, Ina Oostrom, several times. She is not only one of the most intelligent persons I know but she also has a big heart. She contributes tremendously to today’s hypnosis world. I fully recommend her as a hypnother-apist and OMNI hypnosis instructor.

This book is a must read for you if you are interested in finding a natural, effective and efficient way to overcome your problems, if you want to get pro-found and science-based information about hypnosis, and if you want to ex-pand your existing knowledge about hypnosis.

It’s an honor to review a book that represents the totality of hypnosis, one of the most powerful tools available to mankind. Hypnosis is the portal to what is really happening inside and around us and can unlock the many secrets of our subconscious mind and even our souls.

When I was 20 years old I experienced firsthand a NDA (Near Death Experi-ence), I was in a severe car accident and went into a coma and my body landed in Intensive Care while I was having a grand experience in another world that I can only describe as incredible peaceful and comforting. It felt like being home and there was no desire to go back to my life as a medical student preparing to

become a surgeon, which was my lifelong dream. This dream world was fasci-nating and addictive. At a certain moment I was approached by a few beings who looked like the wizards out of a Hollywood movie and I was gently but firmly summoned to go back to complete my mission. There was no place for discussion and a moment later I was in my paralyzed body wondering if it was a dream or real. My dream of becoming a surgeon was destroyed because of the after effects of the blunt trauma. That is how I became interested in alternative fields of medicine and became an acupuncturist and a few years later also a hypnotist. The reason was that I was searching for answers that science could not give me. In hypnosis I found the answers about life, why we are here, where we come from and much more. In hypnosis we enter through a portal that can bring us to past experiences, future visions and discover the true reasons of why things are happening to us. Once we go through the portal of hypnosis into ‘all there is’ there are many doors we can enter like the memory bank of this life and find out things we have forgotten and also the causes why we feel and react certain ways, we can communicate with our soul, with our higher conscious-ness, with our body’s intelligence and even with other intelligences that we did not know existed.

This book: Hypnosis, the key to self-empowerment is one of the first books that really gives us a glimpse in the infinite possibilities hypnosis has to offer. Hyp-nosis will unlock our potential in ways that even many hypnotists have no idea about. My wife Joy has unlocked through hypnosis a doorway to be in contact with her guides, her higher consciousness, her soul and the vast wealth of in-formation of the past, future and other dimensions and has become my go-to Oracle whenever I have an important question. You can discover how this is possible with this book and I recommend it to anyone who is interested in the mystery of being human and want to find out more about ourselves.

I hope this book will land in many hands of those seeking to know more!

With respect and complimenting the authors on an incredible well crafted, easy to read book!
