Hydrophilicity [2] // Experimenting beyond type.Tutor: Daniela Konrad

The RMIT Master Design Studio Hydrophili-city [2] // experimenting beyond type strived to investigate local qualities of Melbourne’s Dock-lands and asked all participants to propose a site-specific architectural intervention on the undevel-oped site of the North Wharf pier.

The Studio was based on an intensive research on the context of the Melbourne Docklands, analyz-ing their given characteristics, structures, behav-iors, and atmospheres, as well as their ecological and economical rationales. Water and the wa-ter’s edge was always in the focus of our work, aiming at encountering new strategic ways for the appropriation of urban water territories. In several exercises the studio participants researched on the heterogeneities in situ, and opened up to the ter-ritorial, cultural, social, political and ecologi-cal forces of the site. All final architectural inter-ventions were based on a hypothesis and design guidelines derived from the research results. The quality and potential of the North Wharf pier and water general is addressed differently in each pro-posal, however, everybody discovered that the surrounding can suggest a template for the built! History of the Docklands area

Boon Wurrung and Woi Wurrung tribes’ areas1802: Lady Nelson and The Investigator made the rst European entrance into Port Philipp Bay1803/1804: The Surveyor General Charles Grimes discovered the Yarra River1835: John Pascoe Fawkner and John Batman arrived in Port Philipp Bay. J. Batman settled down on the Batman’s hill, in the actual docklands until his death. 1937: The Governor Richard Bourke made of cial the city of Melbourne and created the plan of the city.1848: Melbourne became a cityAbattoirs, boiling-down works, tanneries and other industries set up in the dockland area, creating a really polluted area. The Harbor was a basin a bit further up to the Yarra.1851: Gold was discovered in Victoria, beginning of the gold rush. Victoria became a separate colony from the New South Wales.A gas station is constructed near Batman’s hill to light the city. A cleaning system, the Yarra Yean System, was installed 30km north up to the river. The need of a new bigger harbor became obvious1877: The Melbourne harbor Trust was established: The Yarra would rst be rerouting, deepening and widening. The works started in 1879.1888: The Australian Wharf is inaugurated. The rst ship to berth, in 1893 was the Lund Line’s SS Hubuck.1890’s: Victoria’s economic crash. Project for the extension of the harbor are stopped1901: Melbourne became the temporary capital of Australia: • Economic upturn• Lots of cargos poured into the city• Wool was still the main export but also primary products from all over the state

“The ora of a salt marsh is differentiated into levels according to the plants’ individual tolerance of salinity and water table levels. Vegetation found at the water must be able to survive high salt concentrations, periodical submersion, and a certain amount of water movement, while plants further inland in the marsh can sometimes experience dry, low-nutrient conditions.Salt marshes are quite photo synthetically active and are extremely productive habitats. They serve as depositories for a large amount of organic matter and are full of decomposition, which feeds a broad food chain of organisms from bacteria to mam-mals. Many of the halophytic plants such as cordgrass are not grazed at all by higher animals but die off and decompose to become food for micro-organisms, which in turn become food for sh and birds.”

“The East Asian - Australasian Flyway is one of the world’s great yways. At its northernmost it stretches eastwards from the Taimyr Peninsula in Russia to Alaska. Its southern end encompasses Australia, particularly Victoria State, and New Zealand. Between these extremes the Flyway covers much of eastern Asia, includ-ing China, Japan, Korea, South-East Asia and the western Paci c. It is especially important for the millions of migratory waders or shorebirds that breed in northern Asia and Alaska and spend the non-breeding season in South-East Asia and Australasia. In to-tal, the yway passes through 22 countries with approximately 55 migratory species travelling along it, equating to about 5 million birds.Shorebirds are among the most impressive migrant waterbirds in the world and can be found in shallow water at both coastal and inland wetlands. They include plovers, sandpipers, curlews and snipe.Migratory shorebirds use the summers of both southern and northern hemispheres to conduct their life cycle. During their non-breeding phase they inhabit the southern hemisphere in ocks, arriving in Australia in October and feeding mainly on small crea-tures living in mud ats. In April, these birds y from their Australian feeding grounds to breed in the tundra areas of the northern hemi-sphere, such as the Russian Far East and Alaska. They nest on the ground, with their brown and russet breeding plumage providing camou age against predators.

Prior to the recent formation of the East Asian–Australasian Flyway Partnership and its Flyway Site Network, a program was launched in March 1996 in response to the need for international action to protect migratory shorebirds along the East Asian - Australasian Flyway. The East Asian - Australasian shorebird site network linked wetlands that are interna-tionally important for shorebirds. The shorebird site network played an important role in highlighting the importance of wetland areas for shorebirds and promoted activities for their conservation. The network encour-aged site managers to establish a local advisory or liaison group and develop management plans, which helped gain support for the management of these sites for conservation. The network also helped site owners, managers, local people and participating organizations to gain international recognition and support for their site and their conservation efforts. The network was an international cooperative effort supported by both governments and non-government organizations. The 31 sites that joined the network across 10 countries have since been transferred to the new East Asian-Australasian Flyway Site Network, which will continue to support this important conservation effort well into the future.”

Docklands wetland is a great opportunity and a strong symbol to improve Melbourne’s ecological awareness. It will become one of the most impor-tant salt marshes and ecological laboratory inside a city in the world.

The salt marsh will have a strong impact all over the city in many different features.

Increasing the environmental quality, could the Victoria Harbour become a new „reservoir“in the next 10 years?

The proposed site has no rules or intentions of usage and people are unsure on how to oc-cupy the space. Thus, the North Wharf in the Docklands needs to be given a greater sense of ownership, without too specific rules. Our intentions are to blur and interweave move-ments and boundaries between activities, as well as, the threshold between water and land. Our proposal, the RMIT school of fine arts, occupies the whole North Wharf pier. Adja-cent to the campus, The Melbourne Museum of Art is placed along the end of the pier as well as small retail and cafes to encourage a diverse group of people to visit the site. The school sprawls across the pier, linked through movement as well as the spatial needs of the students. The program evolved through the need to create a greater sense of culture and art in the Docklands and to encourage and attract more attention from the local community.

Architecture does not mean inventing but discovering, an ever new interpretation of known terms, seeing the world with different eyes, experiencing it anew, redis-

covering it and enlivening it with new content.(Goethe)

The design process involved continuous operations by addition, subtraction, and alteration of a grid system to densify the site and create individual moments. The process was based on site analysis and research, social interaction and site conditions such as wind, sun, and atmospheric qualities which created a site specific proposal. The final architectural inter-vention is based in the notion of threshold and how architectural threshold can be used to create a notion of discovery within the site as well as a slow transition and reconnecting the inhabitants to the site through creating personal experiences. The project sets up a blended dialogue throughout the site between program, landscape and waterscape; and we seek to create a more diverse appeal, attracting more Melbournians, and more importantly, at a higher frequency and for a longer duration.

Culture, site and subtletyChris Gilbert

Story 1:200CULTURE, SITE AND SUBTLETY. DOCKLANDS: NORTH WHARF

The compilation of the conducted research in the area of the North Wharf pier and an awareness of the architectural and social conversation regarding the existing Docklands development has lead me to the following conclusions:1. Any new development within the Docklands area should embody the qualities of Melbourne. Quality of space, intimacy, warmth, texture, intensity, and scale. // 2. Due to it being a central site with easy access to the CBD and major highways, it should be used to contribute to the goals of Melbourne 2030, as such the site should consist largely of high density residential dwellings. // 3. There should also be a wide range of commercial and recreational activities within the site. In order to become successful it needs to create its own community with a self generating/perpetuating level of intensity and activity. //

It turns out w

ot enough parks and trees - s

in service to the city

Being close to the city is important to

me, also being near places of interest, I

love where i live because i'm

a 10 minute walk from heaps of re

ally different areas, sydney road, ly

gon st, brunswick st, th

e city (that's more like 30mins actually)

A sense of community is important, a

s is public transport w

hen you are remote. parks are a necessity anywhere.

Lots of greenery and trees, open areas. tr

ansport because i don't lik

e to use my car.

Public transport, c

lose to shops, mixed demographic

A safe quiet environment that is close enough to work and shops but doesn't feel like we live in the suburbs.

Community and schools

Being close to friends and the city

Locatio, accessability to the city, like transport

Greenery (doesn't have to be a park as such, but tree-lined streets), somewhere to get a decent coffee

Space, trees, safety

Environment, Public Transport, and closeness to friends and work is very important to my environment.

Sense of community and community/civic pride in the surrounding environment is important. Also safety/low crime rate and proximity to necessities and attractions.

Good neighbours, community spirit, access to amenities (shops, schools, sporting clubs etc.)

As a person with a young family we like to be able to go to the parks, walk to school and have reliable public transport.

Sense of community, public transport, proximity to work, promixity to friends, perceived safety, established, close to city, vibrant.

Public transport, 2. safety/crime rate, 3. adjacent shopping and facilities/entertainment, 4. demographic of residents, ie. socio-economic background, 5. access to major roadways/freeway arterials

Public transport because my wife and i only have one car, so need it to get to work, sense of place and character.

Everything is close by, public transport.

Sense of community

Initially i thought the idea of living in the docklands could be quite cool. there was a great opportunity for exploration in design, architecture that could make it a really good environment to live in. However, after nearly a decade of development i would choose not to live in the docklands for several reasons....

Parkland (ie green space and a 'place to relax/study in nature' ), availability of public transport.

Lifestyle, small business that contribute to the community (eg local butcher, small cafe, etc).

Green streets, quite, close but separated. People/community, close to parks.

No, it's too commercial and has lost its character. No, it's too expensiveNo way! it's a wasteland! No escape from the city and it's too windy. I would want a backyard or a park somewhere close...No, there is no community thereNo, there's no yards and it's not really suitable for a young family.I wouldn't mind living in Docklands, if I was wealthy enough to own a flat there as well as the house in Jacana - it would be great to have a crash pad so to speak in the city for action weekends. I wouldn't be into living there all the time as I like space and a backyard.

No, because i work mostly in geelong. When i do work in Melbourne close access to freeways is important. I don't think the docklands area can provide parking for work vehicles and easy access to major freeways.

No. too apartment style, too high rise.No I wouldnt live in the Docklands, its a concrete jungle, has no greenery, would feel really sterile living there, yes its close to the city, but it's just depressing.

Yes, I like the array of new residential buildings, the area seems strange yet inviting, like it was built for the Olympics in a country like Russia, and now everyone's left, its like a real new ghost town

No, has no character. No thanks - from my experiences (which have been limited) it lacks trees and gardens and I find the first stage of the development dated and isolating (wind tunnels etc) nothing seems to link and the sports stadium & the railway station seem to separate docklands from the city - the railway line in particular does not appear to address the docklands side.

From quick viewing the central, business district of docklands appears to engage more with "Melbourne", smaller streets, laneways, better building street connections and scale

I wouldn't want to live in the docklands because the only available living form is apartments. I don't like apartments and I really don't like new apartments, they're badly built and made of crappy cement sheeting. I reckon the sealants in the bathrooms are also really crappy, the ceiling would start to leak after the 59th shower the person living above you had

I don't know, i'd have to give it proper try, i don't think i've ever really been there.

No, it's a shithole. there is nothing visually good looking about the place on any level, no green areas, no good places to eat, it's just a really very ugly area. it seems dormant of any life at all

No, probably too close to city centre, prefer being slightly further out

Part of me would like to live at the docklands so i could see and use more of the culture that Melbourne has too offer and the close proximity to work. Docklands however doesn't offer an affordable lifestyle, enough open safe and land for my family to use and grow, ie vegetables, animals, garage for tools, alfresco living and tranquility.

No, it will only be cool when there is an overflow of people out in Docklands,. And because it is like a big apartment complex.

No, i think the area is ugly and expensive for what it is. I would prefer to live in the eastern suburbs

No, it's strange, sterile and expensive

Not at all. Don't like that end of the city, don't think there's any atmosphere (perhaps something to do with it all being built recently and there hasn't been time for it to evolve like the suburbs I like)

No because i think that it is a yuppie ghetto that is going to become the biggest slum in Melbourne.

I dont think I would enjoy living near the docklands. It seems quite industrial to me, and not very homely to me. I also have the misconception that it is quite far away from everything.

I would love to live in the Docklands but perhaps not later on when/if I have a family and pets etc. I imagine it is better suited for young people and DINKS (double income no kids). It has restaurants and cafes at your doorstep and it is so close to the city which is very attractive to me.

Not with a young family because they would need to travel out to attend school, sports clubs etc.

No, it's windy, soulless, needs more greenery and facilities for families.

No, no sense of community. Not sure if day-to-day facilities such as supermarkets are accessible. Does not 'feel' like Melbourne. No heritage.

Yes. proximity to city and inner-eastern suburbs and city.

No! Little thought was given to the public spaces/interstitial spaces around the buildings and they have just become dead zones. The scale of the buildings are too large given building proximity and with respect to human scale. Not enough active street frontage and no reason to stay in the area. The only appeal are the apartments themselves!

No. Its a weird place.

No. Because its dead and expensive.

I think it was built for many different people. I would say it was built for everyone and was (or still maybe will be) intended to be a social meeting place for a spectrum of the community. With what's there you can see that developers and the government aimed for the sporting crowd, office workers and residents.

No. too artificial and inappropriate for my lifestyle.

No. it doesnt have anything that i would want: no lifestyle, sense of community, etc.

No. I like have a house not an apartment & backyard. No a good vib down there, one one my age, doesn't have any "grain". no good shops, no intimacy.

Tourists.Young gay m

en, 30 yr old single professionals and couples without kids.

Tastless retirees.

People who want the convenience of being close to the city.

Retirees and young childless people

I think Docklands was aimed at urban hipsters, childless, wealthy and the like

Young people who are renting and want to go out all week and all weekend. It is not family orientated at all.

Young people who are renting and w

The docklands was perhaps aim

I think the docklands was built for the developers to m

ake money, the future plans to m

ove the population into the city will help fill any buildings built. it seem

s like the start of a long term plan, not m

any people now but in 20years it w

ill be filled. Coporate people w

ith higher budgets will buy the properties,

they are not focused towards the low

end rental market by any m

Built for yuppies and empty nesters w

ho wanted to be close to the city action w

ithout the inconveniences of the adapted to living city - access to parking, organised and tailored accomm

odation and associated services (such as garbage collection). With the m

any many options available in

Melbourne it is generally not an area that people need to visit - ie. entertainm

ent, day out, shopping or eating.

The only person I know w

ho lives in the docklands is the CEO

of Myer w

ho comm

utes down to m

elb from S

ydney, and a girl at work w

ho doesn't actually live there anymore. i think the docklands w

as built/aimed at people like them

... transient, un stylish and a ridiculous dedication to a

corporate job which m

eans they are only home to sleep and eat.

I think it was built for hip accountants and speculative retirees

I actually have no ideas- morons...cos i just can't im

agine why anyone w

ants to live there, i am assum

ing people with no taste.

Probably older couples/em

pty nesters or professionals

City folk that w

ant to be at restaurants every night and attend every concievable event that occurs in Melbourne, ie football, cricket, ballet, com

Young accountant types and yuppie bogans.

Retirees

I think the docklands is aimed at retirees and young professionals.

Sense of community is very im

Near public tra

the city,

but still suburban, e

ut still close enough to

walk/ride to

the city

Refer to question 2(sorry

It turns out w

e are not fans of our area - n

ot enough parks and trees - s

o they will be im

portant for fu

ture home purchases - our area does have sense of community and we are a 5 minute walk to an express tra

in service to the city

Young people who are renting and w

ant to go out all week and all w

eekend. It is not family orientated at all.

The docklands was perhaps aim

ed at business people who are never hom

e and don't care so much about having neighbours, (no tim

e, not really home m

uch anyway?)

I think the docklands was built for the developers to m

ake money, the future plans to m

ove the population into the city will help fill any buildings built. it seem

s like the start of a long term plan, not m

any people now but in 20years it w

ill be filled. Coporate people w

ith higher budgets will buy the properties,

they are not focused towards the low

end rental market by any m

eans, studios starting at 400per week

Built for yuppies and empty nesters w

ho wanted to be close to the city action w

ithout the inconveniences of the adapted to living city - access to parking, organised and tailored accomm

odation and associated services (such as garbage collection). With the m

any many options available in

Melbourne it is generally not an area that people need to visit - ie. entertainm

ent, day out, shopping or eating.

The only person I know w

ho lives in the docklands is the CEO

of Myer w

ho comm

utes down to m

elb from S

ydney, and a girl at work w

ho doesn't actually live there anymore. i think the docklands w

as built/aimed at people like them

... transient, un stylish and a ridiculous dedication to a

corporate job which m

eans they are only home to sleep and eat.

I think it was built for hip accountants and speculative retirees

I actually have no ideas- morons...cos i just can't im

agine why anyone w

ants to live there, i am assum

ing people with no taste.

Probably older couples/em

pty nesters or professionals

City folk that w

ant to be at restaurants every night and attend every concievable event that occurs in Melbourne, ie football, cricket, ballet, com

edy festival, theatre, art and any other exhibition.

Young accountant types and yuppie bogans.

Retirees

Young professionals who care too m

Not exactly sure. P

the burbs and have misconceptions that the place is vibrant and city-like?

Corporate people w

I think the docklands is aimed at retirees and young professionals.

Young professionals (D

Being close to the city is important to

me, also being near places of interest, I

love where i live because i'm

a 10 minute walk from heaps of re

ally different areas, sydney road, ly

gon st, brunswick st, th

A sense of community is important, a

Young people who are renting and w

ant to go out all week and all w

eekend. It is not family orientated at all.

The docklands was perhaps aim

ed at business people who are never hom

e and don't care so much about having neighbours, (no tim

e, not really home m

uch anyway?)

I think the docklands was built for the developers to m

ake money, the future plans to m

ove the population into the city will help fill any buildings built. it seem

s like the start of a long term plan, not m

any people now but in 20years it w

ill be filled. Coporate people w

ith higher budgets will buy the properties,

they are not focused towards the low

end rental market by any m

eans, studios starting at 400per week

Built for yuppies and empty nesters w

ho wanted to be close to the city action w

ithout the inconveniences of the adapted to living city - access to parking, organised and tailored accomm

odation and associated services (such as garbage collection). With the m

any many options available in

Melbourne it is generally not an area that people need to visit - ie. entertainm

ent, day out, shopping or eating.

The only person I know w

ho lives in the docklands is the CEO

of Myer w

ho comm

utes down to m

elb from S

ydney, and a girl at work w

ho doesn't actually live there anymore. i think the docklands w

as built/aimed at people like them

... transient, un stylish and a ridiculous dedication to a

corporate job which m

eans they are only home to sleep and eat.

I think it was built for hip accountants and speculative retirees

I actually have no ideas- morons...cos i just can't im

agine why anyone w

ants to live there, i am assum

ing people with no taste.

Probably older couples/em

pty nesters or professionals

City folk that w

ant to be at restaurants every night and attend every concievable event that occurs in Melbourne, ie football, cricket, ballet, com

edy festival, theatre, art and any other exhibition.

Young accountant types and yuppie bogans.

Retirees

Young professionals who care too m

uch about their image.

Not exactly sure. P

the burbs and have misconceptions that the place is vibrant and city-like?

Corporate people w

I think the docklands is aimed at retirees and young professionals.

Young professionals (D

Tastless retirees.

People who want the convenience of being close to the city.

Retirees and young childless people

I think Docklands was aimed at urban hipsters, childless, wealthy and the like

Young people who are renting and want to go out all week and all weekend. It is not family orientated at all.

Young people who are renting and w

The docklands was perhaps aim

I think the docklands was built for the developers to m

ake money, the future plans to m

Built for yuppies and empty nesters w

ithout the inconveniences of the adapted to living city - access to parking, organised and tailored accomm

any many options available in

Melbourne it is generally not an area that people need to visit - ie. entertainm

The only person I know w

ho doesn't actually live there anymore. i think the docklands w

I think it was built for hip accountants and speculative retirees

I actually have no ideas- morons...cos i just can't im

Probably older couples/em

City folk that w

Young accountant types and yuppie bogans.

Docklands Vision

A Place for Everyone – belonging to and

offering quality experiences for residents,

workers, investors, shoppers and visitors

from Melbourne, regional Victoria, interstate

and overseas.

A Thriving Water Place– by integrating a

wide range of land and water-based

activities, dining, retail, events and other

attractions, seven days a week, to shape

Docklands into a vibrant boating destination.

Docklands is celebrated for its integration of

the water, urban art, entertainment,

technology, services, sports, heritage and

culture with wide promenades and public

open spaces. While Victoria Harbour is

recognised as Melbourne’s ‘blue park’ – a

stunning and well-used water place hosting a

variety of uses.

Results.DocklandServices & Amenities 4. The program should accompany a wide range of people from all classes and occupa-

tions. // 5. There should be opportunities for small business and artists to assist in gener-ating creative culture. // 6. It should attempt to be critical of itself rather than an ideal or a utopia. // 7. It should understand the environmental conditions of the site and take full advantage of them. // 8. It should be concerned with quality of space and livability of pub-lic areas and streets. // 9. It should be a framework rather than a complete design solution were every building is designed. // 10. It should not seek to interpret the water/its location or seek an abstract connection with it. Rather it should draw attention to its surrounds and qualities so that it might remove us from our internal world and make us aware of the natural, offering a relief from the urban and a moment to reflect.

Being close to the city is important to

me, also being near places of interest, I

love where i live because i'm

a 10 minute walk from heaps of re

Young people who are renting and w

ant to go out all week and all w

eekend. It is not family orientated at all.

The docklands was perhaps aim

ed at business people who are never hom

e and don't care so much about having neighbours, (no tim

e, not really home m

uch anyway?)

I think the docklands was built for the developers to m

ake money, the future plans to m

ove the population into the city will help fill any buildings built. it seem

s like the start of a long term plan, not m

any people now but in 20years it w

ill be filled. Coporate people w

ith higher budgets will buy the properties,

they are not focused towards the low

end rental market by any m

eans, studios starting at 400per week

Built for yuppies and empty nesters w

ho wanted to be close to the city action w

ithout the inconveniences of the adapted to living city - access to parking, organised and tailored accomm

odation and associated services (such as garbage collection). With the m

any many options available in

Melbourne it is generally not an area that people need to visit - ie. entertainm

ent, day out, shopping or eating.

The only person I know w

ho lives in the docklands is the CEO

of Myer w

ho comm

utes down to m

elb from S

ydney, and a girl at work w

ho doesn't actually live there anymore. i think the docklands w

as built/aimed at people like them

... transient, un stylish and a ridiculous dedication to a

corporate job which m

eans they are only home to sleep and eat.

I think it was built for hip accountants and speculative retirees

I actually have no ideas- morons...cos i just can't im

agine why anyone w

ants to live there, i am assum

ing people with no taste.

Probably older couples/em

pty nesters or professionals

City folk that w

ant to be at restaurants every night and attend every concievable event that occurs in Melbourne, ie football, cricket, ballet, com

edy festival, theatre, art and any other exhibition.

Young accountant types and yuppie bogans.

Retirees

Young professionals who care too m

uch about their image.

Not exactly sure. P

eople who w

ant a sterile environment w

ith everything brand-spanking-new? E

mpty nesters w

ho move in from

the burbs and have misconceptions that the place is vibrant and city-like?

Corporate people w

ho work in the city. P

I think the docklands is aimed at retirees and young professionals.

Young professionals (D

Being close to the city is important to

Young people who are renting and w

ant to go out all week and all w

eekend. It is not family orientated at all.

The docklands was perhaps aim

ed at business people who are never hom

e and don't care so much about having neighbours, (no tim

e, not really home m

uch anyway?)

I think the docklands was built for the developers to m

ake money, the future plans to m

ove the population into the city will help fill any buildings built. it seem

s like the start of a long term plan, not m

any people now but in 20years it w

ill be filled. Coporate people w

ith higher budgets will buy the properties,

they are not focused towards the low

end rental market by any m

eans, studios starting at 400per week

Built for yuppies and empty nesters w

ho wanted to be close to the city action w

ithout the inconveniences of the adapted to living city - access to parking, organised and tailored accomm

odation and associated services (such as garbage collection). With the m

any many options available in

Melbourne it is generally not an area that people need to visit - ie. entertainm

ent, day out, shopping or eating.

The only person I know w

ho lives in the docklands is the CEO

of Myer w

ho comm

utes down to m

elb from S

ydney, and a girl at work w

ho doesn't actually live there anymore. i think the docklands w

as built/aimed at people like them

... transient, un stylish and a ridiculous dedication to a

corporate job which m

eans they are only home to sleep and eat.

I think it was built for hip accountants and speculative retirees

I actually have no ideas- morons...cos i just can't im

agine why anyone w

ants to live there, i am assum

ing people with no taste.

Probably older couples/em

pty nesters or professionals

City folk that w

ant to be at restaurants every night and attend every concievable event that occurs in Melbourne, ie football, cricket, ballet, com

edy festival, theatre, art and any other exhibition.

Young accountant types and yuppie bogans.

Retirees

Young professionals who care too m

uch about their image.

Not exactly sure. P

eople who w

ant a sterile environment w

ith everything brand-spanking-new? E

xpats? Overseas students? E

mpty nesters w

ho move in from

the burbs and have misconceptions that the place is vibrant and city-like?

Corporate people w

ho work in the city. P

eople who m

ay be from interstate/overseas w

ho require a base in Melbourne.

I think the docklands is aimed at retirees and young professionals.

Young professionals (D

Being close to the city is important to

me, also being near places of interest, I

love where i live because i'm

a 10 minute walk from heaps of re

ally different areas, sydney road, ly

gon st, brunswick st, th

Young people who are renting and w

ant to go out all week and all w

eekend. It is not family orientated at all.

The docklands was perhaps aim

ed at business people who are never hom

e and don't care so much about having neighbours, (no tim

e, not really home m

uch anyway?)

I think the docklands was built for the developers to m

ake money, the future plans to m

ove the population into the city will help fill any buildings built. it seem

s like the start of a long term plan, not m

any people now but in 20years it w

ill be filled. Coporate people w

ith higher budgets will buy the properties,

they are not focused towards the low

end rental market by any m

eans, studios starting at 400per week

Built for yuppies and empty nesters w

ho wanted to be close to the city action w

ithout the inconveniences of the adapted to living city - access to parking, organised and tailored accomm

odation and associated services (such as garbage collection). With the m

any many options available in

Melbourne it is generally not an area that people need to visit - ie. entertainm

ent, day out, shopping or eating.

The only person I know w

ho lives in the docklands is the CEO

of Myer w

ho comm

utes down to m

elb from S

ydney, and a girl at work w

ho doesn't actually live there anymore. i think the docklands w

as built/aimed at people like them

... transient, un stylish and a ridiculous dedication to a

corporate job which m

eans they are only home to sleep and eat.

I think it was built for hip accountants and speculative retirees

I actually have no ideas- morons...cos i just can't im

agine why anyone w

ants to live there, i am assum

ing people with no taste.

Probably older couples/em

pty nesters or professionals

City folk that w

ant to be at restaurants every night and attend every concievable event that occurs in Melbourne, ie football, cricket, ballet, com

edy festival, theatre, art and any other exhibition.

Young accountant types and yuppie bogans.

Retirees

Young professionals who care too m

uch about their image.

Not exactly sure. P

eople who w

ant a sterile environment w

ith everything brand-spanking-new? E

xpats? Overseas students? E

mpty nesters w

ho move in from

the burbs and have misconceptions that the place is vibrant and city-like?

Corporate people w

ho work in the city. P

eople who m

ay be from interstate/overseas w

ho require a base in Melbourne.

I think the docklands is aimed at retirees and young professionals.

Young professionals (D

Nationwide, the whole eastern coast line of Australia has become very dry. Therefore, we have developed a strong interest in water re-utilization. Learning from several precedents for ecological systems we have decided to use the Seawater Greenhouse and a landscape filtering system as our main parts of a new livable ecosystem. In order to implement these ideas into North Wharf pier, we have started a precise calculation on the amount of water being produced by a Seater Greenhouse on our site. We have learned that this greenhouse would produce more fresh water than it would utilize for the production of crops. Thus, we introduce residential units as part of our ecosystem. The master planning of the whole systems is determined by the rate of freshwater production and how many residences it can support. In the end, our whole proposal is a self-sustaining system in regards to water.

The Seawater Greenhouse produces crops, fresh water and cool air, which can be utilized for human consumption. The systems works with seawater taken from the harbour, which is then channeled to the greenhouse to cool down the building, and is then returned back to the sea. The fresh water that is distilled out from a condenser in the greenhouse, is then used for irrigation of the crops and placed at disposal for residential consumption. Any surplus water is stored in containers. The rainwater that falls on the site is filtered by the landscape and stored underneath the pier. The Seawater Greenhouse has operable win-dows, which allow the cool air produced by the greenhouse to be passed onto the residen-tial block behind it in summer time. To conclude, Greenhouse+Park+Apartment is a new building typology which can significantly contribute to a sustainable future in Melbourne.
