VVR111 – Hydrology and Aquatic Ecology

What have you learned so far

• Hydrology • Atmospheric systems • Rainfall-runoff relationship • Urban hydrology • Water treatment • Physical and chemical characteristics of lakes • Nutrient cycles • Food web • Marine Systems • Environmental problems

RESTORATION OF RISEGERGA RIVER

Time to put it all together!

VVR111 – Hydrology and Aquatic Ecology

Project - Riseberga River

• “Consultancy” work

• Restoration of areas of Riseberga River

– Riseberga park (groups 1, 2, 7, 8)

– Toftängen (groups 3, 4, 9, 10)

– Käglinge road (groups 5, 6, 11, 12)

• Group work

”Interactions in groups are like among animals”

•Group interactions are important and can be

handled

•Meet each group (10 min) for discussion 1 Nov

(13-15) and 2 Nov (10-12)

•Possibility to discuss potential problems in the

group

•Discuss solutions and how to handle them

VVR111 – Hydrology and Aquatic Ecology

Steps

• Visit to the areas to be restored (27 Oct)

• Do a first sketch map of your restoration plan (1, 2 Nov)

• Improve your first sketch based on some more theory (8, 10, 17, 22 Nov) – More hydrology, some hydraulics, restoration technics,

biodiversity, EU water directives, decision support systems

• Write a preliminary report about your project – get comments

• Write the final report

• Present your project (8, 9 Dec)

Practical issues

• Buses leave 10:15 from the Eco-house • Toftanäs wetland park at 10:45 hs • Sallerupsvägens wetland area at 11:15-12:00 hs • Respective group at respective project area from about

12:30-15:00 hs • Return about 16:00 • Maps and other information, already available on our

home page, will be also distributed at the bus. • Bring warm clothes, umbrellas, rain coats,

wellingtons, lunch/snack, camera, pen and paper.

Report

• 1st page: Title, author names, group number and email addresses.

• 2nd page: Preliminary table of contents • 3rd – 10th page

– 1. Introduction (background, problem description, delimitations) – 2. Objectives – 3. Description of area and hydrology: catchment, water

balances, precipitation, runoff, urban areas, etc. – 4. Description environment and pollution load

• References • Appendixes: calculations details. In general only principles

are necessary giving relevant references.

VVR111 – Hydrology and Aquatic Ecology

Report

• The first preliminary report (one per group) should be submitted at latest Tuesday 22 November 24:00 to [email protected], and [email protected].

• Feedback on preliminary report 24 Nov (13-15hs)

• Final report should be handed in at latest Friday 2 December 24:00 to the same as above.

Sallerup road

Suggestions on how to start your project

Start with the large issues, e.g.

What do we want to do with the area?

What is our vision!

Which are the possibilities with the area?

Which are the restrictions of the area?

Requirements

•Increase nutrient retention

•Increase biodiversity

•Increase ecosystem services, i.e. make the area

better for the people
