    Hydranoid: Dockyard

    Introduction

Scientific truth is simple but fancy. Even the most sophisticated and complex mechanisms of modern times

draw it's power from a principle as fundamental as the fact that water is incompressible. Keeping this

motto of basic simplicity at the core of this competition, we present to you Hydranoid: Dockyard, an

opportunity to make a dockyard crane using hydraulic mechanism. Energize your machine with syringes

filled with water and discover the joy of playing with the basics of our apparently complicated science.

TaskTeams have to make a machine using only hydraulic mechanisms, that should stay stationary in the circular

region(Refer Figure 1) and has to pick up blocks(Containers) from the collection platform(Ships) and place

them at platforms(Loading Trucks) of different heights and at different distances from circular area as

    shown in the figure below.

    Arena Specifications

    1. The arena will consist of four raised platforms (Loading Trucks) and a central circular area ofdiameter 200mm.

    2. There will be a big raised collection area (Ships) which will have blocks placed on it.3. The machine has to stay stationary on the central circular area i.e. the base of the machine must

not move from the circular area.

    4. The dimensions of the collection area where blocks are kept will be 100 mm x 200 mm.(figure 1)5. Dimensions of the block are 40mm x 40mm x 40mm. Blocks are made of thermocol and their

weight will be less than 10gms.

    6. The platforms will be at three different heights and distances from the central area and the blockshave to be picked up from the collection area and kept on these platforms.

    7. The angle between two consecutive platforms starting from the collection area is 45 degrees.8. Blocks once kept on the platforms will be removed manually by the organisers to create space for

placing the next blocks on the platforms.

    Machine Specifications

    1. Machine base area should not exceed 150 mm x 150 mm at the time of start. There is norestriction on the expandable height of the machine. The extensions used to control the machine

are excluded while measuring the machine dimensions.

    2. Machine can expand or compress during the run.3. Locomotion of any part of the machine should be governed by some hydraulic force.4. Use of batteries or any other source of stored energy is prohibited.5. Use of any type of electrical motors, springs, compressor and pressurised cylinders is prohibited.

    Controls

    1. The machine should only be controlled with the help of syringes(any other cylinder pistonarrangement).

    2. Maximum of two people will be allowed to control the machine at any point of time.

    Materials allowed

Any material from this list can be used in making the machine:

    1. Syringes (or any other cylinder-piston arrangement)2. Tubes3. Wood4. Metallic frames5. Rubber bands6. Plastic7. Water8. Metal pulleys

    Competition rules

    1. The maximum time given for completing the task is 6 minutes. A setup time of 2 minutes would begiven before the start of the run.

    2. The control of the machine by the participants must only be syringes.3. The machine has to pick up blocks from the collection platform and keep them on the 3 platforms

    using hydraulic mechanisms only.

    4. Maximum of three interventions are allowed during a trial.5. Machine can pick up any number of blocks at a time.6. A block once kept on a platform cannot be picked up.

    7. A block which falls down once can not be picked up again by the machine.

    General Rules

    1. The teams must adhere to the spirit of healthy competition.2. Any team that is not ready at the time specified will be disqualified from the competition

    automatically.

    3. Any damage to the blocks not allowed. Teams found damaging the blocks will be disqualified.4. The organizers reserve all rights to change any of the above rules as they deem fit. Change in rules,

if any will be highlighted on the website.

    5. In case of any discrepancy decision of the judges shall be treated as final and binding on all.

    Judging

    Point system:

    1. 10 points will be awarded for placing the block on platform 1.2. 15 points will be awarded for placing the block on platform 2.3. 25 points will be awarded for placing the block on platform 3.4. In case of a tie in the total points the winner will be decided on the basis of number of blocks kept

on platform 3. In case of a further tie the number of blocks kept on platform 2 will be counted. Still

if there is a tie then the time taken to keep all the blocks will be taken into account.

Elimination Round : Top 32 teams with maximum points will qualify for the final round.

Final Round: Team scoring maximum points within 6 minutes will win the competition.

    Eligibility

All students with a valid identity card of their respective educational institutes are eligible to participate.

    Team Size

A maximum of 3 are allowed in a team. Students from different educational institutes are allowed to make

    a team.

    Certificate Policy

    1. The top 32 teams qualifying for the Final round will be eligible for certificate of participation.2. Top three teams will be awarded the Certificate of Excellence.3. There will be prizes for best design and most innovative design which will be announced later.
