Over Coffee with KrisSometimes I feel like I have turned into my mother; that is not necessarily a bad thing. My mother’s father helped startrecycling in Sioux Falls, and once recycling started in Detroit Lakes, my mom was very into it. My dad would make fun of mymom for washing the recycling so thoroughly. I recycle, and sometimes I find water bottles in the garbage can at home, that Idig out and mutter “Oh, honey”. Justin did not grow up in a recycling home, and he is learning, but sometimes he forgets. JenHatmaker in her book “Seven: an experimental mutiny against excess” shares a similar story in her month of “Waste” the last ofmy chapters. Hatmaker says, “This has become an obsession for me. I inspect the trash can every day to see if something canbe rescued for recycling.” Hatmaker asks the question: “What does it mean to be a godly consumer?” and that struck a chord with me. The Hatmakerfamily did not recycle or bother with creation-care before their experiment. Since this is something that is already on myradar, I will be trying something different. Instead of an intentional week, I will do an intentional month, in September. I willwalk to work (so don’t assume if my car is not in my parking spot, that I am not at church). And, I will not use paper towels athome or at church, that means I will be using a real towel to dry my hands when I am here at church. I will not use single usewipes, and I will try to not use very many paper products when I am away from home or church. You can check in with me andsee how I am doing throughout the month. It might be an easy month, or it may be more difficult than I think. Hatmaker lifts up this Psalm as having more meaning after her experiment; The earth is the Lord's and all that is in it, the world, and those who live in it; for he has founded it on the seas, and established it on the rivers (Psalm 24:1-2). Thank you for going on this journey with me.Blessings on the rest of your day, Kristina Dernier

Looking Ahead - A Note from Pastor KaylaAs we jump into this fall season, there is much excitement ahead! Kris and I have been working hard to find new ways toconnect our faith life and our daily life together, while also focusing on how we can better bridge the gaps that may existsbetween the church and our neighbors. One of the things that we are most looking forward to in the months ahead is a strategic planning effort with Great OutcomesConsulting, spearheaded by Leann Wolff. During this time, we will gather together to hear our story, to share our hopes anddreams, and to ultimately make sure that our mission, vision and values align with who we are as a congregation. In order to make this happen, feedback will be sought in various ways throughout the process. Sometimes we will ask for smallgroups to gather, other times it will come in the form of a survey. No matter the method, I ask that as these times for feedbackcome, that you be honest about your hopes and dreams for the future, that you truly reflect on what it is that we as acongregation are called to do within the church and outside the church walls, while also remembering that at the center of itall, the Spirit is moving in us and around us. I know that as a congregation we have the potential to do great things and I am hopeful that as we discern where it is we arecalled, we will find a clearer path to move forward with for the sake of spreading Christ's love. Blessings, Pastor Kayla

A Note from the Council Vice-PresidentWRITTEN BY KIMBERLY RASMUSSON-ANDERSONEach month the Council discuss the church properties and how best to maintain them. Recent conversations have included thefollowing topics:

· The fundraising goal for the water heater and softener has been met. Thank you! We are now obtaining estimates for that work to be done soon.

· The new windows for the east side of the office area have been ordered and the planned installation is in October.· A doorbell with video camera and intercom system has been added to the north entrance. If you are visiting the church

during a non-worship time, please use this doorbell to gain entrance and wait a moment for a response. We are thankfulfor this budget-friendly added security.

· With many new potholes, research is being done on gravel fill for the parking lot. Summer at Glyndon Lutheran means a break from our normal Wednesday services and faith formation classes, but there hasstill been a lot of activity at Glyndon Lutheran. Listening to input from GLC members, three new events were held in the lastcouple months - Preschool Vacation Bible School, a Middle School Service Plunge, and the Lyndon Day Rib Fest and block party.Thank you so much for sharing your new ideas with us, helping us execute on those ideas, and participating in these newevents! Summer is winding down now, though, and our fall schedules are just around the corner. Many people call September the othernew year. Kris and Pastor Kayla have done a lot of work to put together a GLC calendar from September, 2019 through May,2020. Are there any other planners out there? As the master scheduler of our household, this makes my planning heart sohappy! There are so many ways to get involved. We would like to share the good works of Glyndon Lutheran with more people,so we will be canvassing neighborhoods in September to welcome everyone to Glyndon Lutheran. We encourage everyone tojoin us in inviting a new friend or neighbor to worship and to help us make everyone feel welcome, if they decide to join us. As we resume normal schedules, I would like to extend an invitation to join the Love & Stitches prayer shawl ministry. We willmeet again on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 – 8:00. All experience levels are welcome. I am happy to give instruction tothose who are new to crochet. Lastly, a pet project for me is to add more special music to our worship experiences. If you play an instrument or sing, pleaseconsider sharing your talent with us. Thank you and as always, all are welcome to join us for future council meetings.

June Council Meeting Minutes - Approved 7.26.19Glyndon Lutheran Church Council Meeting - June 17, 2019 @ 6:15 p.m. Members present: Deb Tollefson, Pastor Kayla Billings, Cindy Henriksen, TJ Hopkins, Kris Dernier, Wanda Peterson, Brady Bleick,Kimberly Anderson, Esther Ellingson Devotions and Prayer — Kim presented a podcast that was focused on Proverbs 14 vs 1. GLC’s Mission Statement: Glyndon Lutheran Church is a Christ-centered community church, nurturing the faith of all generations.Secretary’s Report - No changes or additions were included to the report.

Motion to approve: Brady Bleick 2nd: TJ Hopkins Motion carried. Treasurer’s Report- As of June 17th the general fund is -$6374.00

Outstanding bills include: Portico, Kayla ($500.00) and Esther ($700.00) Total owing for this month will be an estimated - $14,000.00. A discussion followed that was focused on what we can do about this huge shortage. It was decided that the council will draft a letter requesting assistance from the congregation in order to alleviate some of the burden, while also explaining some of the reasoning behind it.

The long winter which included multiple closures seems to be the main issue that has impacted the deficit we are facing today. Please prayerfully consider an extra donation during the summer months. The construction in front of the church continues however that does not seem to be the largest factor for the loss in income. [Additional discussion in the Long-Term Finances section below]

Motion to approve the treasurer’s report: Kim Anderson 2nd: Deb Tollefson Motion carried.

Glyndon Lutheran may be perfect for them. 4. Council will also be reaching out to the community in order to let people know that we have a friendly place to worship just down the street from their home. 4. Day Camp Recap

Day camp went well. Some adjustments for next year are in the works. There will be a second session for the Pre-K in August due to the success of this one.

July Council Minutes (Cont.) - Approved 7.26.19Topics of Discussion1. Properties Update

a. Weeds- Matt Akre has graciously volunteered to work on the weed issue in the church rock bed. He will besupplying the necessary treatment products, and youth volunteers from the service plunge will also pull a large section of weeds.b. Dehumidifiers- Unfortunately, all 3 of the de-humidifiers in the church have broken. Through private donations we have beenable to purchase one new de-humidifier and we have one that is being loaned to us until the humidity calms down. c. Door Bell Video- Kris has purchased a new Video Door Bell for the North entrance of the education wing. This will provide ameasure of security along with allowing staff to answer the door using the voice response system to let people know someone iscoming to answer the door. This was a very minimal cost of approximately $75.00 compared to other systems available andshould alleviate some visitor frustrations born from a small staff trying hard to be in several places at once.

2. Reach Food Pantry

Peggie Chisholm who is the Executive Director of REACH located in Hawley presented to the council. GREAT things arehappening, and Peggie outlined a plan for REACH to establish a staffed food shelter in Glyndon, housed at GLC. (Some of youmay not know that the current food pantry is actually community-based pantry, simply housed at GLC, with GLC volunteers). Notonly will we have access to food from the Great Plains food bank we will be able to offer perishable goods also.

a. Grants- Peggie and Pastor Kayla were able to write and obtain a grant which will pay ½ of the salary needed to pay a parttime REACH employee to staff the food pantry one full day each week. The other ½ is being raised through fund raisers thatare being spearheaded by CindyHenriksen who is also a REACH board member and part of the GLC family (to be clear, this position will not be a part of GLC’sstaff, and the salary will not come from GLC). This will also help free up GLC staff time, who were previously volunteering tostaff the pantry.b. Fridge/Freezer- Grants were also obtained to purchase a fridge and a freezer in order to obtain meat and perishables fromGreat Plains and donors in order to provide families in need a well-balanced meal. These will be located in the Education wingand will be highly organized and monitored. c. Startup - during the service plunge, youth will help move the items from the current food pantry to the new set up located inthe two rooms farthest South on the east side in the education wing. The goal is to be fully operational September 10th. Untilthen, the current community food shelf will continue to operate through August 31st.d. Peggie outlined other services that REACH provides, including nutritional counseling and other social aid awarenesstraining, that may be available through this pantry.

Motion to allow REACH to establish an upgraded food pantry at GLC: TJ Hopkins 2nd: Nick Kinnen. Motion carried.

3. 7/10 Meeting Recap - The meeting held on July 10th had a GREAT turnout. What a night of fellowship. Council provided the mealwith a lot of help from others in the congregation (special thanks to Janet Marschke). Matt Akre provided some old favorite songsduring worship and we almost filled the church. TJ Hopkins (council president) presided over a short recap of what is going on in thechurch – focusing on positive programming, fundraisers and events, but also realistically outlining financial issues. 4. Fall Kick Off Event- Due to weather delays on the construction project we may not be able to work the sidewalk/bike pathreopening into a fall event.

Council decided that WE WILL BE HAVING A FALL KICK OFF on the 15th of September. More information to follow. Lord’s PrayerNext Meeting—Monday, August 19, at 6:15p.m.
