Community Involvement
As of Tuesday May 23rd, there are still a few grade 12 graduating students who are missing their 40 hours
of community service which is a diploma requirement. A friendly reminder that this is necessary in order to
graduate. It is advisable that grade 9-11 students start planning and taking advantage of the summer
holiday to complete their hours. A community service binder is available in the Guidance Office which lists
some available opportunities in Toronto. Also check out www.volunteertoronto.ca; www.toronto.ca/youth
Reminder: Not A Humberside Trip
Humberside does not organize a “Grad Trip” over the Summer Break. Any such trip is not organized,
sanctioned or supervised by Humberside staff. It has come to our attention that some secondary school
students in some schools are being approached by S-Trips and are being offered incentives to act as
“recruiters” for student trips. The S-Trip brochures may use school names, and may give the impression to
parents that these trips are sanctioned by the TDSB and supervised by school staff. These trips are not
sponsored or endorsed by Humberside or the TDSB.

Nutrition @ HCI
Mental health and wellness is an important area of focus at
Humberside. Research shows that when students are not hungry; they
achieve higher levels of success at school. Many Humberside students
will benefit from our Nutrition program which started in March 2017.
While many students leave home with a full stomach, many others
make decisions related to eating breakfast based on punctuality,
personal preference, athletic and other co-curricular and extra-
curricular activities. Sometimes making a decision to avoid eating
breakfast means that the student does not achieve their best.
Thanks to the Toronto Foundation for Student Success, Humberside will
continue to receive funding to offer a student nutrition program in
2017-2018.
Humberside C.I. Student to Sit on Minister of Education’s Student Advisory Council
Grade 10 Humberside student, Lex Hergott, was recently named as part of the 2017-18 Minister's Student
Advisory Council (MSAC). MSAC is made up of a diverse group of grade 7 to 12 students from all parts of
the publicly funded education system in Ontario (76 Ontario school boards in the province). The students
meet with the Minister of Education, Mitzie Hunter, several times throughout the year to share ideas and
provide advice on a variety of topics regarding Ontario’s public education system. Students hold a one-year
term and Lex’s first meeting was on May 4th. Students form subcommittees to discuss specific topics. Lex
was also invited to participate in a Canada Club luncheon meeting with the Minister at the Royal York Hotel
on May 8th and he will be part of a week in August at a leadership summer camp. In order to be chosen,
Lex had to complete an application process about himself and why he wanted to be on the council, and he
was chosen out of 500 applications. His top five areas of priority are student disengagement, social justice,
indigenous perspectives, special needs and the arts. Congratulations, Lex! We look forward to your
contributions to the council.
Credit Rescue: June 26th
On June 26th, staff and students will participate in a Credit Rescue initiative. The purpose of the day is to
have students that are in a failing position to complete work in order to rescue a credit. The morning
(9:00 – 12:00 noon) will be devoted to the Credit Rescue session. Students participating will complete work
provided by their classroom teacher and all work must be at a provincial standard. Students must have
attended classes regularly and have completed their culminating activity to qualify to attend the morning
session. In addition, students who are late and or absent for any portion of the credit rescue morning will
not be eligible for the credit. Students will be contacted and invited by their classroom teacher by June 23rd
to attend the Credit Rescue morning, which will start at 9:00 am sharp on June 26, 2017.

Clothing Drive
In the beginning of April, HCI Cares hosted their very first organized event for charity: a clothing drive!
After some time preparing and planning, the club members announced the event to students of
Humberside. Every lunch, individuals from the club would collect donations from generous students and
teachers. This resulted in a major success for HCI Cares. A total of 290 articles of clothing were collected in
a week, all of which will go directly to "The Sharing Place" to be dispersed to those in need within the
community. The club is anxious to plan their next charity event!
EQAO – Grade 9 Math
The Grade 9 Assessment of Mathematics will be administered on the morning of Monday, June 12, 2017.
This is a province-wide test taken by every Grade 9 mathematics student in Ontario and it is administered
by the Education Quality and Accountability Office of Ontario (E.Q.A.O.). Some of the components will be
evaluated by the classroom teacher and, in accordance with Toronto District School Board recommended
practice, will count for 10% of their final mark. All Grade 9 math students are expected to participate in this
evaluation. To help teachers, parents and students prepare for the assessment, EQAO provides support
materials which can be found at their website: www.eqao.com. At the end of May, letters were distributed
with more information to parents of Grade 9 math students.

Reducing Anxiety in the Exam Room
Some students feel anxious only during an exam or test. Some ways of reducing anxiety follow:
• Scan through the whole exam to discover which questions you are able to do with relative ease and
plan to do these first. The result is likely to be a little more confidence and the comfort of knowing
that there are no “easy” marks that you missed on the exam.
• Examine the marking scheme of the test or exam and plan to divide your time evenly among the
available marks of the exam; e.g., spend ten percent of your time on ten percent of the marks for
the test. While you may not stay strictly with this limit, it is worthwhile to know how many minutes
you should spend per percentage point in the exam. Following this guideline gives you a sense of
progress and feedback about how you are doing. It is important to keep track of your time so that
you have an opportunity to answer all questions: after all, it is better to give a 75% answer on all
questions than perfect answers on 50% of the exam.
• Some students even find it helpful to set mini-breaks at specified points during the exam during
which they close their eyes, relax their hands and do deep breathing exercises. Even thirty seconds
can help bring down your symptoms of stress if you use one of the various relaxation strategies.
• At all times try to focus on the process of answering the question rather than on the end result.

Summer Music Camp
Enrich your child's summer vacation with music camp through three unique programs.
- Summer Sounds - students can play a band or string instrument, guitar, keyboard and sing in a choir.
- DownTown Summer Strings - a great benefit to students who have at least one year experience playing
the violin, viola, cello or double bass, and wraps up with a concert open to the public.
- Toronto Summer Music Camps - offerings students in Grades 5-9 an opportunity to attend a residential
music camp held at Mono Cliffs Outdoor Education Centre, near Orangeville.

Music Notes
Humberside was recently awarded a concert from the Humber College "Jazz in the Schools" Ensemble. On
Friday, May 19th, the 12 ensemble members, under the direction of Brian O'Kane, dazzled their audience,
comprised of Grade 10 and 11 Band Classes, administration, and several faculty and students. During this
one-hour performance, students and staff learned about the history of jazz and its impact on our world
today. What a fantastic way to end a busy week!
On Tuesday, May 23rd, the Music Council hosted its annual Spring Open Mic in the school's Senior
Courtyard. The school community was invited to enjoy the warmer weather with a lunchtime picnic on the
lawn while many of our very talented students performed. Always a favourite event among the Husky
population, the Open Mic performers serenaded all who attended with their sweet sounds. Congrats to the
Council and Sound & Lighting Crew for running another successful event.

Bicycle Safety – Reminders for the family
Now that the warmer weather has approached us children will be participating in many outdoor activities
like bike riding. The Toronto District School Board and Toronto Public Health want kids to be safe while
playing outdoors this summer. Parents and caregivers can "stay a step ahead" by protecting children when
they ride. Here's how:
1. An adult should always supervise children 10 years of age or younger when they are using a bicycle
or other wheeled sports equipment. Even older children may need on-going supervision when riding
near the road.
2. Make sure children wear the correct helmet properly when they ride. Ontario's bike helmet law
requires all children and youth under age 18 to wear an approved bike helmet when riding a bicycle.
3. Keep students away from traffic when they use wheeled sports equipment. Make sure they ride in a
safe place.
4. Teach children how to:
a. steer, brake and ride in a straight line
b. wear the right safety gear, and
c. do a safety check every time they ride a bicycle, scooter, skateboard, use in-line skates or wear
shoes with wheels.
Humberside Collegiate Institute | 06-2017
7
5. Be within arm's reach when your children are learning to ride any wheeled equipment.
6. Always walk a bicycle, scooter or skateboard across a street intersection, instead of riding across.
7. Tell children that you are happy when you see them riding safely.
8. Remind your child of the safety rules when they forget.
9. Be a good role model - wear a helmet and safety gear yourself. Students copy what adults do.
Aboriginal Sharing Circle
On May 5th, members of the Aboriginal Sharing Circle along with Mr. Cassidy’s grades 11 and 12 Drama
students attended a play entitled The Witch of Niagara at the Helen Gardiner Phelan Playhouse. The play
was performed by actors from The Centre for Indigenous Theatre, which “embraces the spirit, energy and
inspiration derived from the culture, values and traditions of Indigenous people”. The cast were comprised
of actors from across Canada, many of whom would be graduating from the three year professional
training course provided by the CIT to promote emerging Indigenous artists. Thank you to Anushka Tintor
and Mr. Cassidy for organizing the field trip.
Report Cards & Summer Packages
This year all final report cards can be picked up Friday June 30, between 9:30 – 11:00 am in the cafeteria.
Packages of information and forms related to the 2017-2018 school year will be emailed to parents and
guardians in August. A number of these forms need to be signed by parents or guardians and returned to
Humberside.
