Intelligent Property

• Infringement of IP kills innovation and creation; the serious consequence from it is that it also kills the industry which needs innovation and creation

• You can be prosecuted for IP infringement and liable for all the damages done to the IP owner

• In HK, a new body of intellectual property law has been developed which aims to reach the highest international standards, and put the Hong Kong, China at the leading edge of intellectual property development and protection

• Technology and engineering, in principle, are the same in every part of the world. This intrinsic advantage enables the mobility of employment for the engineering professionals

• Through HKIE, the HD awards are recognized by the following countries

– Canada, UK, Ireland, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand

• Apart from the HD academic award, trade certification is another means which enables employment mobility

• In general, three different stages for a professional engineer

– Experience building stage

• This stage usually takes 10 years to build up the competency and good command of the knowledge and skills

• You may need to hop around a bit at the beginning to find your destined career

• Better keep this “honeymoon” stage short, a prolonged period and frequent change of jobs will lead you to nowhere

• Once identify your career, you should work hard and learn more, don’t mind to work more, may be under paid, be patient, take on professional development programs and follow superiors’ orders (buy-in)
