OVER OUR 50-YEAR HISTORY,

WE’VE BECOME GLOBAL LEADERS IN POLYTECHNIC

EDUCATION. WE KNOW THAT GETTING A CAREER-

FOCUSED EDUCATION MEANS THAT PRACTICE

IS AS IMPORTANT AS THEORY.

At Humber, you’ll get lots of practical experience in facilities that mirror what you’ll see in the working world. And with work or clinical placements in many programs, you’ll have the chance to get on-the-job experience while you’re still in school. Your professors all have extensive industry experience, so they know what employers are looking for. With small class sizes and instructors who know your name, you’ll never be just a number here.

You’ve also got choices: you can complete a certifi cate, a diploma, a degree or an apprenticeship. Start with a diploma, then apply for advanced standing in a degree program. Complete a certifi cate, then pursue a diploma – we’ll help you choose the path that’s best for you.

Along with your classes, you’ll have opportunities to participate in applied research, helping to solve real-world problems and makean immediate difference. If you want to go into business for yourself, we’ll give you the tools and support you need.

BIANKA’S PATHWAY

After completing high school, Humber was the first postsecondary institution I attended.

The foundation I received from the General Arts and Science (GAS) program helped me improve my writing skills at a postsecondary level. I chose to continue my studies at Humber because its small classes and relational focus suited my learning style.

From the GAS program, I was able to excel in the Bachelor of Child and Youth Care degree program, where I learned to write research papers, compile incident reports and participate in classroom discussions.

I knew Humber offered practical and hands-on experience, and having the opportunity to complete an undergraduate degree with those qualities meant I could enter directly into a career after graduation. I have now enrolled in the Critical Disabilities Studies master’s program at York University.

As a student with disabilities, I have focused my time on advocacy and accessibility both in the classroom and in the Humber community. Humber has offered me every opportunity to incorporate my ideas for building a more accessible campus.

“THE CALIBRE OF EDUCATION OFFERED HERE IS BOTH A UNIQUE AND PRACTICAL PATH THROUGH POSTSECONDARY EDUCATION.”

YAEL’S PATHWAY

The world of academia is not easy to navigate, especially for those who might be the first in their families to enter higher education. I grew up in Hungary and immigrated to Canada with my family in 2000 where I attended high school.

I applied to Humber as a mature student in the General Arts and Science – University Transfer program to explore possible areas of interest.

I was also involved in the student advisory committee and the mentorship program. This provided further opportunities for bonding and it strengthened the support system Humber strives to provide.

I received a tremendous amount of support, advice and encouragement, which translated into success. I will forever be grateful for the fantastic people who invest so much of themselves into helping others realize their dreams.

Now, I am completing my final year at the University of Toronto studying political science and history. I am exploring volunteer positions with the Canadian Forces and I plan on continuing my studies part-time to obtain a second degree in psychology.

I am in the General Arts and Science – University Transfer program with plans to attend Guelph-Humber’s psychology program. I want to be able to work with LGBTQ+ youth, specifi cally gender diverse youth with mental illness. I want to be able to support them in whatever way they need help to navigate the world better.

At Humber, I’ve met some of the best professors I’ve ever had. Their classes have changed my view on things and opened a whole new world for me.

I initially got involved with the LGBTQ+ Resource Centre when I was on the Gender and Sexual Diversity Committee email list. After that, I started to work at the centre at the North Campus and my life has changed for the better. I’ve been able to help many students who don’t have a support system, those who are looking for their identity (or who are getting comfortable with their lack of identity) and be proud of who they are.

I have also been working with Athletics and their #HereToPlay campaign and with many departments at Humber and IGNITE to inform students to be mindful of their language and gender inclusivity.

The immense support I have received from my parents, my supervisor, my partners and my close friends has helped me be who I am today and I couldn’t be more thankful.

NOCT’S PATHWAY

I chose the paralegal degree program at Humber because it allowed me to study law immediately after high school. In fi rst semester I was introduced to Canada’s legal system and took focused courses including Legal Research and Writing and a course on contract law. The professors were knowledgeable and their infl uence on my profession goes beyond what they taught me at an academic level.

During my co-op program, I wrote the LSAT and applied to a number of law schools in Canada. I graduated from the Dual JD program based out of the University of Windsor’s Faculty of Law in partnership with the School of Law at the University of Detroit Mercy.

I now practice law out of my offi ce near Toronto Pearson International Airport dealing with businesses and entrepreneurial clients and the unique legal issues they face in their business and personal lives.

My advice to future Humber students is that with any endeavour, you get out of it what you put into it. Connect and network with faculty and other professionals early. Take part in student competitions to distinguish yourself from the rest of the pack. Open yourself up to the knowledge available to you and you will reap the benefi ts in your career.

“HUMBER’S SUPPORT HELPED US BUILD A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS.”Faria: I went to an Ontario university for four years, got my degree, and after working for a few years, realized I’d hit a plateau and decided that I needed more schooling if I wanted to advance my career. I went into the Bachelor of Commerce in Digital Business Marketing, and there I met Courtney.

Courtney: I came to Humber right out of high school. Once I went on a campus tour at the Lakeshore Campus, I knew I didn’t want to go anywhere else.

I’ve always loved organizing and tidying, and eventually I realized that it might be possible to turn that into a business.

Faria: She had already organized my sister’s house, and we all said, “Why don’t you make this into a job?” We then started Declutter with CoCo, and applied for and won funding from the New Venture Seed Fund and the HumberLaunch pitch competition – $29,000 in total.

Courtney: Our mentor has been amazing. The money has been great, but working with our mentor has been even more valuable. He has our back 100 per cent, and we couldn’t have asked for better support.

I am currently taking the Criminal Justice degree program after graduating with a Community and Justice Services diploma in 2015.

My best friend introduced me to the Indigenous Knowledge certifi cate program in our second semester of the diploma program. She’s Indigenous and she wanted to learn more about her own culture but was too shy to go on her own. I wanted to be supportive, and then it turned into this amazing journey.

The program helped me become more involved with the Indigenous community at Humber. This was a great opportunity to extend that desire to learn about the people who lived here before colonization as well as the Indigenous people of modern-day Canada.

As a non-Indigenous person, I have always been appreciated and welcomed by everyone in the Aboriginal Resource Centre (ARC). Working here has strengthened that feeling thanks to the family of staff and students at the ARC.

I have recently been sworn in for the Military Police Reserves in January 2017. My Basic Military Qualifi cations (BMQ)/training will be completed in the summer of 2017.

I attended Lakehead University’s Honours Bachelor of Commerce in Administrative Studies. I knew when I chose that program that I wanted to go to law school after fi nishing the degree. After a year and a half, I decided that I wanted to study the law in my undergraduate studies as well as my graduate studies.

I chose the paralegal degree program because, in addition to a theoretical understanding of the law, I also wanted applied knowledge.

When initially researching the program, I learned that we would be required to complete placement hours obtaining hands-on experience in the fi eld. I also learned that we would be conducting mock trials, mediations, debtor-creditor examinations, and other tasks required in practice. This set the program apart from others.

I have a passion for social justice, and feel that having the qualifi cations to practice law will give me the ability to help others in ways that I otherwise couldn’t.

Before attending Humber, I completed an Honours Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Science at the University of Ottawa and a Master of Science in Biochemistry at the University of Toronto.

Throughout my undergraduate degree, I obtained scientifi c research experience in nanoscience, cellular biology, and microbiology at the University of Calgary, the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, and the Defence Research and Development Canada.

During my Master’s, I attended a talk given by a Regulatory Affairs professional which piqued my interest in the fi eld.

The Humber program offered the unique opportunity to learn about Regulatory Affairs hands-on. The assignments were highly relevant and represented tasks an RA professional would be asked to do.

It offered an outlook on pharmaceutical, medical devices and food, which would allow me to consider career options in various regulated industries. I had the opportunity to develop high quality work products, refi ne my oral presentation skills and learn from professionals in the industry.

My professors shared their wealth of knowledge and motivated usto succeed. They went above and beyond to help us attain our learning goals.

I am currently completing an internship with the Policy and Programs Branch of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. I look forward to applying the regulatory knowledge I obtained at Humber and through my internship to develop new regulations and bridge relationships between industry and regulatory authorities.

“I HAVE HUMBER TO THANK FOR KICK-STARTING MY JOURNEY.”

Before attending Humber, I studied geography at another Canadian university. I then worked at a large Toronto hospital in their Corporate Planning and Development department before I decided to quit my job and pursue fi lmmaking.

This was something that seemed unattainable to me because it felt like something only a privileged few were able to pursue. When I graduated from the diploma program, I discovered that I could be fast-tracked in the degree program, so I decided to complete a degree as well.

My old career path offered little room for creativity and fi lmmaking was defi nitely an outlet that could satisfy that urge. With fi lm, you can change the lives and minds of others.

Some highlights at Humber were shooting our studio drama projects and fi lming my independent project at the end of third year. These projects teach excellent work ethic and push you beyond what you think you’re capable of.

Since graduating, I have worked on a TMN Original TV series called Reelside and I shot my fi rst feature fi lm, Mina Walking, with my independent production partner Yosef Baraki. The fi lm premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival, won a Canadian Screen Award and has played in festivals on six continents.

I am presented with new and exciting projects every month. This is by far the most rewarding choice I have made in my life as it has brought me on adventures I could only have dreamed of.

When I was younger, I wanted to go into fi lm or music. I studied voice in high school, and ended up studying opera at the University of Toronto. Once I fi nished at U of T, I wanted to have an option for what I was going to do – I knew opera was a risky business, and it was hard to build up a career. I also wanted to take a break and let my voice develop.

I also realized that what I liked most about doing opera was the rehearsal and production process, more than the actual performing – and being able to make creative choices behind the scenes is exactly what I love about working in fi lm.

I felt comfortable in my program right away – the teachers were committed and supportive, and I felt I could trust them to help me fi gure out where I needed to be to succeed. We’re really well-prepared for the practical side of fi lmmaking – I was able to get some hands-on experience right away.

In my fi rst semester, I got a chance to direct, then I got a chance to do cinematography. That experience actually led to me directing a small-budget music video this summer, which has given me some good contacts in the fi eld. I wouldn’t have been able to do that if it hadn’t been for my experience at Humber.
