J A M E S & A L I C E C O R N E L I S O N A N D K E N N E T H C O B B On November 22, 2016, three Huguely family members and three of their best friends had the honor and privilege to visit the new National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) in Washington, D.C. The museum, strategically located on the National Mall in close proximity to the Washington Monument, is the only national museum devoted exclusively to the documentation of African American life, history, and culture. To date, it has collected more than 36,000 artifacts for display. The NMAAHC opened to the public on September 24, 2016, as the 19th and newest museum of the Smithsonian Institution. Fortunately, Alice Cornelison was able to procure six free timed passes a few months in advance for that day. Levels 2, 3, and 4 above ground feature historical exhibits, artifacts, and displays for media, culture, and entertainment, respectively. Very exciting stuff!!! The Concourse, which includes three levels below ground of historic galleries and covers the transatlantic slave trade from 1450 to the mid-1900s through the civil rights period, is very thorough and moving. The Concourse also includes a massive spiral staircase from the lobby, the Oprah Winfrey Theater, and a café.

Even though the small group arrived for its 11:00 A.M. start time and departed just after 4:00 P.M., it could’ve easily stayed until the 5:30 P.M. closing time perusing the many outstanding and thought-provoking exhibits. Definitely, a “must-see” historical museum! And the group was more than happy to perform a dry run on behalf of the Huguely Family in advance of the 2017 Huguely Reunion. Afterwards, needing time to relax and get off their feet, as well as to avoid WDC rush-hour traffic, a very nice sit-down dinner was thoroughly enjoyed at nearby Clyde’s restaurant. Seated (L-R) are: James, Kenneth, Alice, Theresa Jackson, Alice Swanson, and Dr. Maurice Swanson.

For his part, on December 22, 2016, Kenneth, on behalf of the WDC Planning Committee, formally requested on-line 50 group timed passes for the Friday of the 2017 Huguely Reunion. He anticipates hearing back in early January 2017. (Mack Huguely & Everee Huguely Branches)

T R I S T O N R U N Y O N Congratulations to Triston Runyon, who received his very first college admissions letter from Morehead State University in November! Michael, Jr., and Dawn hope that this is just the first of many such letters for their youngest son. Triston, a ‘Class of 2017’ high school senior, graduated early (in December) with a few college credits under his belt, and will walk with his classmates in the spring. He plans to start college full-time in the fall. Dawn exalts, “I’m so proud… and it begins, somebody pray for me!” Amen!

His older brother, Trevon, currently not enrolled in school, was recently hired by Xerox as an Online Customer Care Chat Agent for Apple products. On November 19th, the Lex-Kin “Chili Souper,” a great way to bring in the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, went on as planned with a few of the current members present. The food was both delicious and palate-tingling, and a good time was had by all! The Runyons will keep the Huguely family posted as to their plans to host the next event. (Stephen Huguely Branch)

Our Huguely ancestors looking down from above expect nothing less… (Huguely Executive Committee)
