JUNE 2016

***Next General Meeting – Friday August 19, 2016***

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Remember to renew your membership! If you haven’t done so, now is the time to do it. $20 Special ends June 30, 2016.

July 1st it goes back to $30. A special thanks to Irene Hammons; she recruit three (3) new members. Way to go Irene!

Looks like we have had some great weather while I was away. I see that several members were enjoying it by biking,

golfing and playing pickle ball.

WOW! Take a look at the calendar for another busy month ahead. Thank you to all of the members who are leading

events and also to those who are participating. Remember to check your HSC Google Mail as several impromptu events

are posted there.

At the May BOD meeting, we welcomed our new board members and we appointed our 2016-2017 Social Chairs.

Your Social Chairs are Iris Raiman and Dotty Lovell. Thank you Charlie Hernandez for helping Iris over the past years. A

list of our current BODs and Committee Chairs can be found on page 11 of this newsletter.

VICE-PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

First, I would like to thank you for voting me into office as your VP. In the past there has been a “VP Message” in the newsletter and I would like to carry on this tradition when I can. Below I have provided information about:

LYME DISEASE AWARENESS

EARLY SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS (3 to 30 days after tick bite)

Fever, chills, headache, fatigue, muscle and joint aches, and swollen lymph nodes

Erythema migrans (EM) rash:

o Occurs in approximately 70 to 80 percent of infected persons

o Begins at the site of a tick bite after a delay of 3 to 30 days (average is about 7 days)

o Expands gradually over a period of days reaching up to 12 inches or more (30 cm) across

o May feel warm to the touch but is rarely itchy or painful

o Sometimes clears as it enlarges, resulting in a target or “bull's-eye” appearance

o May appear on any area of the body

PREVENTION

Avoid Direct Contact with Ticks

Avoid wooded and brushy areas with high grass and leaf litter

Walk in the center of trails

Repel Ticks with DEET or Permethrin

Use repellents that contain 20 to 30% DEET (N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide) on exposed skin and clothing for protection that lasts up to several hours. Always follow product instructions. Parents should apply this product to their children, avoiding hands, eyes, and mouth

Use products that contain permethrin on clothing. Treat clothing and gear, such as boots, pants, socks and tents with products containing 0.5% permethrin. It remains protective through several washings. Pre-treated clothing is available and may provide longer-lasting protection

Other repellents registered by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) may be found at Insect Repellents: Use and Effectiveness

Find and Remove Ticks from Your Body

Bathe or shower as soon as possible after coming indoors (preferably within 2 hours) to wash off and more easily find ticks that are crawling on you

Conduct a full-body tick check using a hand-held or full-length mirror to view all parts of your body upon return from tick-infested areas. Parents should check their children for ticks under the arms, in and around the ears, inside the belly button, behind the knees, between the legs, around the waist, and especially in their hair

Examine gear and pets. Ticks can ride into the home on clothing and pets, then attach to a person later, so carefully examine pets, coats, and day packs

Tumble clothes in a dryer on high heat for an hour to kill remaining ticks (Some research suggests that shorter drying times may also be effective, particularly if the clothing is not wet.)

TOUR DE CURE & TDC TENT Saturday, June 11th ~Bonnie MacLean

At the time of this writing, our Tour de Cure team is 56 members strong, and we are the largest team in our category! We are also the top fundraising team in our category so far! There are opportunities for everyone in the club to be involved:

Join the Team

There is still time to register for the team. The Tour is on June 11th with routes of varying distance, so there is something for everyone! Register at our Team Page here:

http://main.diabetes.org/site/TR/TourdeCure/TourAdmin/1338269462?pg=team&fr_id=11081&team_id=723613

Sponsor the Team or a Rider

Please consider supporting our team with a tax-deductible contribution to the American Diabetes

Association. You can make a donation to the team, or an individual rider. Visit our team page for a list of riders. Choose your favorite cyclist, or support a team member who needs a little boost to meet their fundraising minimum. Remember, every rider has made a commitment to raise at least $200 in order to ride. To make a contribution, visit our team page here:

http://main.diabetes.org/site/TR/TourdeCure/TourAdmin?team_id=723613&pg=team&fr_id=11081

Visit the HSC Team Tent on Tour Day

We’re going to have a tent in the Tent Village on Tour Day! We hope that club members who are not riding will consider coming out on Tour Day to hang out with the team, send riders off, and welcome riders back after their rides. Ride start times are staggered throughout the morning based on mileage (6:30-11:30am), and riders will be returning at various times (up to 4:00), so regardless of the time you come there will be someone to cheer for as they leave or welcome back after their ride is complete. Bring a cooler, a picnic breakfast or lunch, games, cards, bocce and stay for an hour or the whole day!

**IMPORTANT POLICY CHANGE** HUGGERS SKI CLUB INC Policy Change

~ Board of Directors Overnight or longer trips with funds that pass through the club will require that checks from members be received by a deadline date. The deadline and the address for checks to be mailed will be published in the trip announcement. Trips must be announced to the membership at least two weeks before the deadline. Checks may be mailed as soon as the trip is announced. If a trip is oversubscribed, the Trip Leader and the Chairperson or BMAL responsible for that Committee or group will select the members eligible to go on the trip by random drawing witnessed by both parties. If someone is unavailable to do the drawing, the President will appoint substitutes as needed. The random selection will continue until all checks are given a sequential number. Should a cancellation occur, those on the waiting list will be contacted in numerical order until the trip is filled. Room assignments will be determined by the Trip Leader with attempt to accommodate all requests from trip participants. Should a participant disagree with their room assignment, final decisions will be made by majority vote of the Board.

HEALTH TIP What’s the Beef? ~Linda Louison-Krause, Certified Wellness Coach Americans eat 7 billion pounds of ground beef a year! That meat is a common source of food poisoning in the U.S. and 28% of us eat meat that is raw or undercooked. Consumer Reports recommends choosing meat without antibiotics, preferable grass fed. The top preference is organic grass fed. Always cook those burgers to 160 degrees F. A good alternative…veggie burgers with tomato and guacamole. Happy Grilling!

Preheat the oven to 425 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. 2. Peel the carrots. For true hot dog resemblance, when peeling, round the edges (like a hot dog.) 3. In a small bowl, whisk together the liquid smoke, soy sauce, maple syrup, onion and garlic powder. Place the carrots in a shallow baking dish and pour over the liquid mixture. If you have the time, cover and let them marinate for at least 2 hours (Overnight works best). If not, that's okay, just roll the carrots around in the mixture, using your fingertips to massage the marinade into the carrots. When the carrots are coated in the mixture, season with pepper and transfer to the baking sheet. Roast for 35 minutes or until fork tender. Every five minutes, brush the carrots with the remaining marinade mixture . 4. Once your carrot dog is done, place it into a hot dog bun and top it with your favorite hot dog toppings.
