A LITTLE OVER A YEAR AGO, WE LAUNCHED A VISION.

A vision to bring together the leading thinkers, doers, and creators of this region to share our story and inspire the next ranks of innovators. To celebrate the incredible future being built here in Greater Boston at the intersections of art, science, and technology. HUBweek is a first-of-its-kind civic collaboration and it would not exist without the unwavering support and passion of our sponsors and collaborators. This year, we are again humbled and energized by your response. In our first open call for collaboration, we received over 150 submissions to participate in HUBweek 2016. More than 70 collaborators and sponsors will join us this year to bring you unique programming and experiences.

From its inception, HUBweek has been an open invitation to those who believe in a brighter future and want to be a part of authoring and building it. We hope that the contents of this booklet will provide just a glimpse into all of the inspiring people and ideas you can expect to find this fall at HUBweek. We’ll see you there.

MARCELO COELHOCreative Director, Marcelo Coelho StudioBridging art and technology with programmable materials and digital fabrication.

Q: How do you foresee the worlds of art, tech, and business colliding?

A: More artists and designers have been embracing business as a way to get their work out into the world and make an impact. Art and technology can challenge our assumptions of how the world works, how we communicate, and how we relate to one another. At the same time that they challenge, they also provide the tools for us to rethink and recreate this world in deep and fundamental ways. We will be seeing a lot more entrepreneurs with creative backgrounds.

For more from Marcelo, visit HUBweek.org.

Art-making has almost magical powers in allowing the human race to tell its collective story—to interpret history, explore the present, and imagine the future; it is a global language that everyone speaks and understands. There is a new momentum and profound paradigm shift happening in our region. The traditional models are being challenged and redefined as boundaries are blurring, art/science collaborations are sparking new thinking, and visionaries

are driving business innovation. In fact, CEOs have identified creativity as a core competency for the future. Leveraging Boston’s unique strengths in education, technology, and innovation, art has the special power to creatively unleash new and amazing possibilities that could potentially impact the entire world.”

SUSAN DAHLING SULLIVANChief Strategic Officer, ArtWeek/Citi Performing Arts Center

“ COLLABORATIONS ARE SPARKING NEW THINKING.” INTERSECTIONS OF ART, SCIENCE, AND TECH

8 HUBWEEK SEPTEMBER 25 – OCTOBER 1, 2016

If two patients present to the health care system anywhere in the country with chest pain, for example, and the only difference between them is their race, culture, or language—the minority patient is likely to receive lower quality care than their white counterpart. Minority patients tend to receive less pain medication for the exact same fracture. Black women with breast cancer are diagnosed at later stages of the disease and have a higher mortality rate. And people of color are two to four times more likely than white patients to develop end-stage renal disease. Deepening racial and ethnic divisions in the United States have created an urgent need for the health care community to refocus its attention on ending racial and ethnic disparities in health and health care.”

JOE BETANCOURT, MD, MPH Founder and Director of The Disparities Solutions Center,Massachusetts General HospitalAssoc. Prof. Medicine, Harvard Medical School

ASWITA TAN-MCGRORY, MBA, MSPHDeputy Director, The Disparities Solutions Center at Mass. General HospitalAdvancing policy and practice to eliminate racial and ethnic disparities in healthcare.

Q: What is our largest impediment to healthcare equality? How are you working to solve this?

A: The “not me” phenomenon is a big resistance point. Clinicians will tell us, “I don’t treat patients differently, I treat everyone the same.” This is about acknowledging that everyone is different and what works for one patient may not work for another. We need to tailor our approach based on the patient’s needs, their living environment, and their resources. In a nutshell, that’s what culturally competent care really is.

3MIKE FESTADirector, Wayfair Next, WayfairUsing virtual reality to build shopping experiences of the future.

Q: What is Wayfair Next and how did it get started?

A: Wayfair Next, which started last November, is our R&D department working on moonshot projects. Wayfair co-founder Steve Conine and I had a shared vision for how these technologies can evolve the industry. I won our company hackathon by creating an AR experience that projects 3D furniture into a customer’s home. We talked about how we will be able to leverage 3D models for AR/VR and decided that it made sense to create a small team to develop those next-gen experiences.

For more from Mike, visit HUBweek.org.

Your brain stores virtual reality (VR) experiences as memories. When I watch a video of being on a fighter plane from my phone, my brain remembers sitting in a room watching that video on my phone. If I did that in VR, my brain would remember being on a fighter plane. It’s not like you wouldn’t be able to remember you were wearing a VR headset, but on some level your brain stores that VR experience as

something you actually did. In three to five years, I think every smartphone will be a proper VR device. So everyone will use VR for various purposes: training, education, gaming, etc. This region is going to contribute an incredible amount to [it] over the next few years and beyond.”

4“ FORGET THE STATS.” WOMEN IN TECH

MELISSA JAMESPresident, Founder, & CEO of The Tech ConnectionBridging the gap between underrepresented tech talent and companies.

Q: How has your own experience inspired or shaped your mission?

A: There were times I felt like people saw me as the only person of color on my team, the only female in the office. With the mentorship of Michael Koeris, I was able to build my self-confidence. Mike would always ask for my opinion and allowed me to implement my ideas. He taught me to be insanely curious about my work and to use my curiosity to influence my career development.

For more from Melissa, visit HUBweek.org.

The data and rhetoric paint the really negative side of gender in the workplace, and in particular, on women in tech. While there is absolutely still work to do, there are countless stories of women starting companies and shattering the glass ceiling. I think it’s important that we match the reality of the current statistics with the inspiration and energy of progress being made. It’s imperative that we balance impatience with inspiration.”

MALIA LAZUPresident, Epicenter CommunityFostering civic engagement through education and community building.

Q: Boston is being increasingly recognized as a destination for innovators.

What role do you think that the Epicenter Community has played in that?

A: The recognition of Boston not only includes becoming a destination for innovators, but also the most inequitable city in the country. Epicenter Community sits in that dichotomy. We have created a process that connects, assembles, inspires, and accelerates creatives and innovators from Roxbury, Dorchester, and Mattapan. Through our programming, we help bring together over 20,000 people a year, have helped bring minority businesses to market, and are creating the culture of inclusion in Boston.

For more from Malia, visit HUBweek.org.

“ EVERYONE HAS A ROLE TO PLAY.” CIVIC INNOVATION

We see cities using a variety of tools and strategies—including technology—to improve citizen services and participation. [But] civic innovation is not about technology; it’s about people. The people in Boston are passionate about improving services and access for all residents. They show up with personal interests and connections and share their skills and expertise willingly. The approach is human-centric and there is a role for everyone to play. Boston sits at the intersection of technology, academia, and startups, with a world-renowned healthcare and biotech community. All of that combined with city innovation offices like the groundbreaking New Urban Mechanics initiative make the city a unique headquarters for civic innovation.”

6SHAWN HESSEBoston Office Leader, emersionDESIGNCreating sustainable spaces for clients advancing society.

Q: You were a Climate CoLab Urban Resiliency Fellow a couple years back. What were some of the takeaways from that experience?

A: What I found most striking about that was just how difficult much of this work is. Everyone working on the problem, from engineers and planners to city officials and big non-profits, is in essence making it up as we go along. There are essentially no standards, and often not even a clear understanding of what the changes really are that cities should be planning for. I am most inspired by the Rockefeller Foundation’s 100 Resilient Cities program, which has established a very clear definition of resiliency.

For more from Shawn, visit HUBweek.org.

“ BETTER SOLUTIONS WILL BE FOUND.” CROWDSOURCING GLOBAL SOLUTIONS

In the past, we usually assumed that the solutions to global problems would come from a relatively few government policy makers and other experts. Now, the internet makes it possible to actively involve many thousands of other people, too. That means many more ideas and points of view can be considered, and—hopefully—much better solutions can be found. We already know that global crowds can help solve complex scientific problems like folding protein molecules,

classifying galaxies in space, and mapping the neural connections in brains. And recent research like our MIT Climate CoLab project shows that similar approaches can be used for more complex societal problems, like what to do about global climate change.”

LYDA KUTHExecutive Director, LEF FoundationSupporting documentary filmmakers in the creation of new work.

Q: Why is it critical to support New England documentary filmmakers?

A: Boston has a longstanding tradition of documentary filmmaking and is recognized internationally as a center for innovation in the nonfiction form—due to innovations both technological and aesthetic, for they influence and drive each other—and this continues today. What I am most passionate about is LEF being part of this continuum through its support of documentary artists who are pushing the “adjacent edge” at this moment in time.

For more from Lyda, visit HUBweek.org.

The next generation of filmmakers [in this region] is exploring new frontiers in documentary. Documentary films in recent years have expanded further into the realm of great visual storytelling. Rich cinematography, animation, VR, and experimental elements can be blended into a film to create new ways of expressing the filmmaker’s vision. Documentary film has spread in so many directions stylistically that the diversity is truly incredible. Successful social movements can be facilitated by the power of documentary films such as with Gabriela Cowperthwaite’s Blackfish. There is no limit to the style and substance of great documentary filmmaking and audiences are responding by seeking out these films in theaters and beyond.”

DAPHNE ZOHARFounder & CEO, PureTech Solving health challenges through multidisciplinary approaches.

Q: What inspired you to form PureTech? What drives its focus?

A: So often companies are started because someone’s passionate about a specific idea/technology, and they do everything they can to make that successful. We felt there was a different way to approach this, by starting with the unsolved problem (eg. mental health disorders or conditions like obesity and autoimmune disorders, where very safe, yet efficacious approaches are needed) and then looking for new modalities one could apply to solving those problems. We decided to focus on chronic conditions that are big contributors to overall healthcare costs and where one could impact a broad number of patients.

For more from Daphne, visit HUBweek.org.

8Most people don’t know that many Boston clinicians and researchers are also accomplished musicians, artists, writers, and storytellers. The study and practice of medicine in Boston is increasingly connected to the arts and humanities. We find this connection can improve empathy and communication with patients, enhance perspective, sharpen diagnostic skills, foster teamwork and communication, and reduce burnout. This connection of art and medicine will improve care. By celebrating

our artistic gifts and harnessing their power to heal, we have the ability to push beyond the limits of technology and focus on the humanity of medicine.”

GERALDINE HAMILTONPresident and Chief Scientific Officer, Emulate, Inc.Emulating human biology to understand how disease, medicine, chemicals, and food affect human health.

Q: What do you foresee as the greatest benefits to patients?

A: The Organs-on-Chips technology will help drive the acceleration and discovery of potential new drug candidates. By finding which drug candidates will be safe and have the most impact on patients earlier in the design process, we can help to reduce the time and cost of development, and get more new therapies into the hands of patients. I am also personally interested in adopting the technology for individual patients, which would allow us to better understand the underlying biology associated with specific diseases and potentially explore not only custom treatments, but also preventative measures for health and wellness.

For more from Geraldine, visit HUBweek.org.

9I think many people assume drugs somehow glide from the brains of scientists to the FDA, which ignores all of the complicated and fascinating—and sometimes illegal—things that happen in between. The rapid pace of biological discovery is generating loads of novel ideas on how to treat disease, but changing winds in economics and politics have brought to light important issues about the relationship between scientific promise and societal reality. [At the end of the day], people ought to know that the biotech business, however inscrutable it may seem, is really just made up of people with big dreams, big egos, and clashing ideas about the future.”

ELSA SZEFounder, AgoraFacilitating inclusive civic engagement via online townhalls.

Q: What’s been the hardest part about turning your idea into a reality?

A: After I developed the idea of Agora in my graduate thesis at Harvard, I realized no one was doing anything like that anywhere in the world. So I decided to take the leap and create it. The hardest part was overcoming the jaded attitude some people have at first because they didn’t believe the broken system could be fixed. But guess what? The best parts of the world have always been shaped by idealists, not critics.

For more from Elsa, visit HUBweek.org.

While the younger generation seems to be broadly characterized as lacking focus, we see the opposite with many of our startup founders. Not only are they able to balance their rigorous academic schedules with the formidable task of building a company, but they also seem to have a supernatural ability to put the energy and effort required into both. I also think people will be surprised by how hungry they are to change the world for the better, by the quality of ideas and clever ways they are trying to turn their visions into realities. They seem to be driven by an internal motivation to make the world a better place, rather than looking for external financial rewards or recognition.”

ANDERS BROWNWORTHPrincipal Engineer, Circle Changing financial exchange by moving money over the open internet.

Q: What’s Circle’s mission and what draws you to it?

A: Circle is on a mission to change the global economy. We’re making sending someone money as safe and easy as sending them a text. And we’re doing this with the blockchain, the internet of open value exchange. I come from a technology background and have always had a special place in my heart for finance. Combining this at the start of the new FinTech revolution happening right now makes it impossible not to be excited!

11“ INEFFICIENCIES IN OUR DAILY TRANSACTIONS ARE UNACCEPTABLE.”THE BLOCKCHAIN

It’s similar to the early days of cell phones, when not many folks could afford them and cell phones were mainly used for emergencies. Today, it’s a world of instant communication as most people are using cell phones. In a similar fashion, we can expect the same adoption of blockchain for business transactions. For example, ifa few friends or neighbors get together and decide to beautify the neighborhood, they could do this all digitally, including picking a contractor and then ultimately resolving all the accounts via a distributed ledger.”

12LIZ POWERSChief Happiness Spreader, ArtLifting Empowering artists experiencing homelessness and disabilities.

Q: What’s the worst piece of advice you’ve received?

A: We decided to create ArtLifting as a public benefit corporation for several reasons: to treat artists with the dignity and professionalism they deserve. Artists did not want to be a “charity case.” Second, we strongly felt by creating a financially sustainable social enterprise, we could expand our impact exponentially. Countless people at the beginning told me I was silly to create a for-profit at the beginning. They were wrong.

For more from Liz, visit HUBweek.org.

It’s above all a mindset: the ability to tap into one’s innermost creative instincts—which musicians have in abundance—in order to advance and bring to fruition an innovative idea, a unique vision, a successful career. Entrepreneurship for us is a state of mind, not just a business pursuit. It’s both innate in every human being—much like music, but it’s also a very, very, very hard path to choose and it can be all consuming.”

EMILY REICHERTCEO, Greentown LabsEnabling entrepreneurs to solve big energy problems.

Q: Can you take us on a quick tour of Greentown today? What kinds of startups and technologies would a visitor see?

A: Our member companies span across cleantech sectors. They range from building and energy efficiency to agriculture, water, and waste, and transportation to advanced chemical materials. Visitors would see some member companies building in-home, efficient aquaponic gardening units to solar-powered cell phone charging stations . We may be biased, but Greentown Labs is a really exciting place to visit!

13Some people believe that clean energy can’t address the expansive and low-cost needs of the developing world—where the vast majority of growth in energy demand will come from in future decades. In fact, low-cost, clean energy solutions are being adopted rapidly in many developing countries already.

Much of the necessary expertise and knowledge needed to bring critical new energy technologies to fruition resides with industry. Supportive policies are the other key part of the equation. Research institutions can’t go it alone—we are only part of the answer.”

At the inaugural HUBweek in 2015, in the storied Faneuil Hall, Harvard Professor Michael Sandel led a celebrity panel that included Arianna Huffington and Yo-Yo Ma in a heated discussion around the ethical impacts of technology.

This year, we turn the mic over to you.

As we enter the final stages of the most contentious presidential election in recent history, we invite you to join us for a truly civic dialogue and debate around today’s most pressing ethical issues. Is it just to tax the rich to help the poor? Should people be free to buy and sell votes? Do rich countries have the right to restrict immigration?

Join us on Monday, September 26, the evening of the first general election presidential debate, from 6-8 p.m. at the Faneuil Forum.

One thing we’ve come to realize through this

process is that being “Of Boston” transcends

geographical bounds. It’s a shared mindset.

A nature that permeates through those who

have touched this city in one way or another.

Through HUBweek, we’ve developed our

own take on what it really means to be

“Of Boston.” Check all that apply.

YOU’VE GOT GRIT.

Resolve. You’re relentlessly persistent

and uncompromising. Grittiness is a trait

that runs in our core (not just because

of the harsh winters). The banal adage

about “curing cancer” as a reference

to doing important work is often used

ironically. Here, people are trying

to do exactly that.

YOU’RE INSATIABLY CURIOUS.

A life-long learner. One of our favorite

quotes from HUBweek 2015 was, “where else

in the world would people line up around

the block on a Sunday afternoon to hear a

philosophy discussion?” You’re curious? You

want to understand more about the world

we live in? You’re “Of Boston.”

YOU’RE SUBSTANCE OVER FORM.

There’s a bit of a “heads down” nature that

dominates here. Let the work do the talking.

Value and results over frills. HUBweek’s HQ

in 2016 is in the former Spotlight office

at The Boston Globe. Each day we are

reminded of the inspiring work that occurred

within these walls. That impact is seemingly

at odds with the humble nature of the

space itself—a sentiment that we’ve found

is representative of the work and authentic

nature of the people here at large.

“If Greater Boston is the world’s university,

consider HUBweek its homecoming.”

ARE YOU “OF BOSTON?”

YOU’RE RESTLESS.

We’ve been amazed at the fact that

almost every organization and institution

we have been fortunate enough to work

with has this universal recognition that what

is good enough today will not necessarily

be good enough tomorrow. From the well-

established corporation and well-known

researcher to the early-stage startup and

up-and-coming artist, Bostonians are in

thoughtful pursuit of better.

YOU’RE IN IT FOR THE TEAM.

People here care. They care about our

collective future. They want to do work

that matters. That’s why we’re home to some

of the leading civic and social innovators,

leading institutions, leading life sciences

and healthcare researchers. We continue to

be moved by the collaborative spirit of the

organizations and people here. There’s a real

community in the innovation and creative

ecosystem, a genuine desire to share, lend

a hand, and build each other up.

Whether you’re here for one week

this fall, four years, or a lifetime,

it’s an honor to work alongside

and celebrate your incredible

spirit. If Greater Boston is

the world’s university,

consider HUBweek its

homecoming. •
