At different points of our learning journey, we all face a challenge that may makes us feel uncomfortable to do, or feel like walking away from it or not even attempt-ing to do it because the challenge that we are facing can be hard for us.

For some of our children within all school-ing systems, such feelings and challenges are a daily thing. This culminates in our children not participating in school learn-ing, developing strategies in avoiding and delaying and not completing tasks. Sadly for some individuals it may lead to not be-coming literate or numerate. This may limit their ability to successfully participate in the work-force.

We are fortunate in our school community that we have a member who is quite knowledgeable in the areas of reading dif-ficulties and issues around dyslexia. As a staff we do put a high priority on finding ways to support our children with their learning. As a community, we all have a responsibility to support our children and try to provide them with every opportunity to be successful. This involves taking positive initiatives at home and at school.

On the last page of this newsletter are links that will further support you when researching options with reading.

If you have any queries please feel free to contact the school or your child’s teacher for further support. Growth Mind Set ‘A company that cannot self-correct, cannot thrive’ Carol Dweck

MUSIC News Festival Choir at Festival Theatre/Adelaide Oval Bridge

On Thursday, May 25th our choir joined

many other schools to make a massed choir of 1,500 voices. We rehearsed out-side Adelaide Oval and some students were interviewed by television stations. While we were singing a small drone helicopter hovered over and filmed us. We were the second school to go walking and singing under colourful parachutes over the bridge. We then joined a work-shop and, in groups, planned a new flag for our own “Children’s Republic”. Once we had drawn it we cut out coloured material in the shapes of hands, smiling faces, pizza and doughnuts.

Then we learned how to use a sewing machine to sew them onto a background sheet. We brought these flags back to school and have put them up in the Learning Street.

Enrolment forms are available from the Front Office.

FAREWELL Pre-Service Teachers This week we say goodbye to our Final Year Pre-Service Teachers from Flinders University - Sarah Gobbie, Tash Janssen, Melissa Buck, Brooke Candy and Damon Read. We have enjoyed having them as part of our learning commu-nity and know that they have gained many skills since beginning their time here. We wish them all the best for the remainder of their studies and look forward to them visiting us throughout the year.

IN-SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGY COUNSELLING SERVICE A psychologist is available at our school. Counselling is a very effective way of helping children and adolescents who are struggling with some aspects of their lives, from feeling anxious or depressed, to experiencing bullying or having difficulties controlling their anger. It can help them to recover and also help prevent reoccurrence.

To access this free counselling service you’ll need to:

Complete the GP information form provided to you by us.

Take the letter along with your child to your local GP and obtain a Mental Health Care Plan referral from your GP.

Complete the In-School Psychology consent form and return it to school together with the GP referral.

We’ll then contact you as to when the psychologist will start working with your child. For more information contact school.

Learning Difficulties Assessment/Useful Resources Families who may have concerns for their child’s learning and might be considering an assessment - the two main specialists that can give a learning assessment and diagnose dyslexia or other learning difficulties are an Educational Psychologist or a Speech Pathologist (some Occupational Therapists are also trained to do this).

The AUSPELD website link below helps parents/carers understand the process and is an excellent free resource. Understanding Learning Difficulties – A guide for parents: http://www.speld-sa.org.au/faq/understanding-learning-difficulties-a-guide-for-parents.html

Families can visit the following websites for advice on assessments and subsequent support, tutoring and accommodations for school: SPELD SA http://www.speld-sa.org.au/ or Dyslexia SA http://www.dyslexiasa.org.au/
