Theory Definition Scene Character Example

Explanation Using 10 pt. font, define the theory of collection of theories. Response should include information from the slides and/or the articles. Can include your opinion if backed up by evidence, but should not only be your opinion. Make sure to include the components of the theory if applicable. Do not provide examples here.

Describe the scene you will reference. Set up the situation to include where it occurs in the movie and the plot overall.

Describe the character and/or characters in order to give us a reference related to the situation you will reference.

Give a detailed example of the theory and tell us why this illustrates the theory. Refer to the definition and key components of the theory as much as possible. Be as specific as possible. It is okay to add your opinion if it is backed up by evidence you cite about the scene and character. Do not make the reader infer anything about the scene or character. For example, if you discuss intellectual stimulation as part of transformational leadership it should be defined.

Trait Based Theories

Trait based theory assumes that individuals inherit specific qualities that make them a natural born leader. This theory identifies certain characteristics shared by leaders.

The end of the movie where the prince releases William from the stocks and knights him.

Prince Edward/William

Prince Edward saves William from the stocks and untimely an early execution; and, because of what he has learned of William, bestows a knighthood upon him. The Prince says to William, “Your men love you; If I knew nothing else of you that would be enough.” The Prince sees a natural born leader in William because of his influence and devoted followers.

Skills and Competencies (Use HTM Model)

The HTM model of skills and competencies includes being people savvy, self savvy, and business savvy. Under these categories are certain skills like strategic decision making for business savvy, interpersonal communication for people savvy, and self development for self savvy.

Geoffrey, the writer, introducing a tournament

Geoffrey Geoffrey the writer, introducing a tournament, is an example of the competency, people savvy. With his words he is able to captivate the crowd and inspire them to cheer for William. He is able to rile up the crowd and create a strong following.

Behavior Based Theories (Use MLQ or LPI)

There are two categories of behavior based theory: task oriented and relationship oriented. This theory states that leaders are naturally focused on one or the other. There are several instruments that can be used to determine which of the two an individual is more of. One of there means is the LPI. The LPI is broken down into five categories: model the way, inspire a shared vision, challenge the process, enable others to act, and encourage the heart.

After William is discovered as not truly being a knight, he still goes out because of his honor.

William Even after being discovered as not being a true knight, William still decides to compete in a joust. This radical behavior is what makes him stand out as a leader. Most people would flee town after being discovered as not a true knight; even William’s friends tried to convince him to run. However, William had a strong vision and was determined to see it though to the end.

Theory Definition Scene Character Example

Leader/Member Exchange (LMX)

This theory states that leaders and followers develop relationships based on social exchanges. There are three phases of LMX: leader and follower start off as strangers, then become acquaintances and finally, a partnership is formed.

War and Roland help Willam get ready for the tournament dinner.

Geoffrey, Kate, Roland, Wat

William has proven his devotion to his friends and his determination to reach a goal that will benefit all of them. In return, his followers develop a deep trust for William. In return, they decide to do something for William and help him get ready for the tournament dinner with Jocelyn.

Path/Goal Theory

This theory focuses on how a leader motivates a follower in order to accomplish a goal. The leader can be directive, supportive, or participative and can be task oriented or relationship oriented. Behaviors of the path-goal theory ma be clarifying goals, supporting followers, or removing obstacles.

William talks Wat and Roland into letting him train to be a knight.

William William illustrates his vision to Wat and Roland. He is able to clearly articulate his goal and show how their visions fit into his. He listens to his friends, understands what their own dreams are, and incorporates those dreams into his own. Then, he makes sure everyone’s visions are realized.

Situational Leadership

The situational leadership theory states that leaders are either task or relationship oriented and they can’t be both and do not tend to ever change. Since you cannot change between being task or relationship oriented, you have to change your situation and adapt accordingly. The Blanchard model labels leadership styles as delegating, supporting, coaching, and directing. You will use each of these styles depending on your situation.

In the beginning of the movie, William takes the place of his knight at the tournament.

William In the beginning of the movie, William decides to take the place of his knight. This is an excellent example of situational leadership because anyone of the three (William, Wat, or Roland) could have stepped up to the plate and assumed the role as knight. However, William was the one to do so. In addition, it seemed that both Wat and Roland recognized William as most fit to do so.

Transform-ational Leadership

This theory says that a connection is created that increases motivation and morality in both the leader and the follower. Other theories focus on the development of the follower but this one sees the benefit and transformation on both sides of the relationship.

After Geoffrey’s last speech, Wat helps William realize that he is now a knight and transforms into that role screaming,” WILLIAM!”

William As William is jousting, he screams his own name at the top of his lungs – proud of who he is. This show that he has achieved his vision of “changing his own stars.” He has transformed of being fully accepting of himself, William, as a knight, not an imposter. He proves to everyone that anyone can be whatever they desire regardless of their background.
