Dear Parents and Guardians,
I am writing a short introduction this week as we prepare to enjoy our Founder’s Day celebrations. There are a
wonderful variety of different activities organised for tomorrow afternoon, both at the College and the nearby Banpo
Sports Centre, culminating in a concert at the end of the celebrations. A letter detailing the day’s programme was sent
out earlier in the week, but please do contact us if you did not receive your copy.
We are hoping that the forecast of good weather will prove to be true, as the day is largely an outdoor event. At the very
least, we will have our performances in the hall starting from 12pm, but will have a much earlier finish if the rain proves
to be too heavy to go outside. We will contact parents in the morning if we think there will be problems with weather,
but otherwise are keeping our fingers crossed for a sunny day!
There are several other important events happening before we finish for the year on Friday 28th June. An important
meeting will be held next Tuesday 11th June at the Seoul Club from 10.30am onwards. This will be an opportunity for our
Year 5-Year 9 parents to hear once more about our (I)GCSE programme and the plans we have to introduce the IB

Diploma in the future. We will also reaffirm at this meeting the excellent staffing that we have secured for Year 10 and
the Senior School in general. All of the teachers previously mentioned in the Newsletters will be joining us in August,
along with some additional appointments which I will be announcing in the coming weeks.
May I finally apologise for not being outside in the mornings to welcome the students into school every day of the week.
The main reason for this has been the need to attend some physiotherapy sessions for two mornings a week (up to
9am) on my old knees!
Yours faithfully,
Daryl Orchard

DCSL Basketball Squads
U14 Squads: The season has now finished so there will be no more after-school practices this term.
U11 Squads: I am writing to confirm that as the opposing school have had to withdraw from the match on Saturday
15th June we have no choice but to cancel the date. Obviously this comes as a great disappointment after looking
forward to playing the final game of the season.
Many thanks for your support this term and also to Mr Nava for his work with the girls teams - the children have
enjoyed learning the game and shown great progress in all areas.

Summer Holiday Reading
Many parents ask how they should keep their child reading over the summer. The holiday provides an excellent
opportunity to take a break from scheme books and to teach your child that we read for meaning and we read for fun.
When you are out and about
Encourage your child to read directions when you are travelling. Get them looking out for road signs
and talking about how long the journey is and how far there is left to go. Whilst travelling about read
timetables: bus, train and subway - this will also encourage independence. Remember that skills
learnt in one language can easily be transferred to another.
Make use of the internet
Look out for author blogs and websites, book previews as well as trailers on the
internet. There are lots of websites that have fun ideas and links to topics and are
appropriate for your child that will engage them and also encourage older readers.
We would recommend the CBBC website and National Geographic Kids.
Library and book shop visits
Help your child to find books relating to topics that they are particularly interested in. Librarians will happily tell you
about popular books and often there are fun activities and competitions that the children can get involved with.
Shopping
Ask your child to help with the weekly shop. They could write down the shopping list for the week and then read it
back in the store or online to find the products to purchase. You could get them to do some research online for new
school shoes or other items that they need before going shopping.
Keep up with the news
Encourage your child to find out what is going on the in world by reading a
newspaper or looking up child-friendly news websites like BBC Newsround.
Be aware that some news items might be of a sensitive nature, so you might want
to be around. It also gives you an opportunity to talk to your child about events
they have found out about. Local papers are often good for finding topics that are
relevant to them.
Start your own ‘Book Club’
How about reading the same book as your child, especially if it is a chapter book? This will allow you to share your
ideas about the book and the characters. Ask your child questions about the characters. For example: Which is your
favourite character? What would you have done in the same situation as the character? Suggest they write you a quiz
based on the book to check you have read the book properly!

Cooking
All children love to cook! Encourage them to read and follow simple recipes and also to plan for the
ingredients and equipment needed. Taste favourites from Roald Dahl's Revolting Recipes, The Silver
Spoon for Children or Jamie Oliver’s Eat it. Any recipe that is not too complicated will do.
Create a holiday scrapbook
Suggest your children make a scrapbook about their holiday. It could also be made online, using a blog
www.blogger.com - adjust the privacy settings to share it with just friends and family. Children can use the site to
write about their experiences and share photos, whilst giving them a real audience for their work.
Making books
Children love making up their own stories. Encourage them to design and make
their own book with illustrations. Your child could also use www.storybird.com to
help them create their own picture book, share online and even get it published as
a hardback book.
Teach Your Monster to Read
For children in or entering Key Stage 1, the free website teachyourmonstertoread.com will
allow your child to practice the first steps of reading, using the same synthetic phonics-based
method as we use in school. An iPad version is scheduled for release over the summer, along
with a sequel to the original game.
Relax with a book
Find a place in your home that would make a good ‘reading and dreaming’ place. They
could help you build it with soft cushions, an indoor tent, comfy blankets. It could even be
somewhere in the garden that is sheltered. Tell the rest of the family that your child
should not be disturbed when they are in their reading spot.
Have lots of fun reading!

Duanwu Festival Celebration
As the Lunar May is coming, a very important traditional festival is very close to us. The
Dragon Boat Festival, Dua nwu Jie in Mandarin, is a traditional and statutory holiday
originating in China and associated with a number of East Asian and Southeast Asian
societies. Our Primary students have made it very special by celebrating it by participating
in various activities.
Wearing five-colour threads
Five-colour threads symbolize the five-colour dragons which will bring us good luck and dispel all kinds of
disasters.
Design Wudu Cakes
‘Wudu’ means the five poisonous creatures: spiders, snakes, centipedes, toads and scorpions. People clean
the houses and eat Wudu cakes to keep the five poisonous creatures away and to protect ourselves.
Page 7 www.dulwich-seoul.kr
Eating Zongzi
Zongzi in Mandarin, is a kind of rice dumpling wrapped in reed or bamboo leaves. It is a special food for this
festival to commemorate a great poet, Qu Yuan.
Dragon Boat Race
The Dragon Boat Race is one of the most exciting activities of the Duanwu Festival. The dragon boats are
decorated in bright colours and people compete in groups. It promotes the spirit of cooperation and
competition. Our Year 4 students have made colourful dragon boats for the race!
