Txline Tool for W-element Model Characterization

The TxLine tool supports GUI-driven creation and characterization of models ofsystems of coupled transmission lines. The tool allows you to create models ofmany types of simply connected systems of transmission lines from 2-Dgeometrical description of the system cross-section, material properties, andlength specifications. The TxLine Tool may be used to create models of

interacting conductors in a cable or IC interconnect systems. The tool andmodel solution algorithms provide the essential functional capability of theHSPICE W-element, and allow RLGC model descriptions to be generated thatare suitable for simulation in HSPICE.

Currently, the TxLine tool is packaged with the CosmosScope installationpackage, which is a separate installation from HSPICE.

To invoke the utility, on the command-line, enter:

% txTool

Features, Enhancements, and Changes in HSPICE Z-2007.03

Synopsys Release NotesHSPICE Version Z-2007.03-SP1

Error Messaging Improvements

In the read-in function, when an error/warning is detected, it will print outwarning/error message with line #

The new format displays warning/error messages are as follows:

-> **warning/error**: file name: line number: error/warning message

Example:

-> **error**: 1.sp: 2: processing a parameter definition expected a name, got anumber

Design for Yield - Variation Block

ACMatch

ACMatch analysis is an efficient technique for computing the effects ofvariations on a circuit's AC response and is similar to the HSPICE DCMatchfeature. The variation definitions are taken from the Variation Block. For details, see ACMatch Analysis in Chapter 16, Mismatch Analyses in the HSPICESimulation and Analysis User Guide .

Interconnect variation with Star-RCXT

HSPICE interconnect variation using the Variation Block has been establishedwith the Star-RCXT Sensitivity-Based Extraction Flow. For details, seeInterconnect Variation in Star-RCXT with the HSPICE Flow in Chapter 14,Variation Block, in the HSPICE Simulation and Analysis User Guide .

Board and Package Design - Signal Integrity

S-element Performance Improvement Using RecursiveConvolution for Massive S-parameter Input

By using recursive convolution and a rational function matrix, users can set thecommand RATIONAL_FUNC_REUSE=1 so that the S-element seeks anavailable data file and reuses it without running a redundant rational functiongeneration process. For details, see Accelerating S-element Time DomainPerformance with Recursive Convolution in Chapter 2, S-parameter ModelingUsing the S-element in the HSPICE Signal Integrity User Guide .

S-element Accuracy Enhancements and DC Point Prediction

Enhancements including rational function approximation provide improvementsto S-element accuracy and DC operating point prediction with the addition ofINTERPOLATION parameter value of hybrid, and a new LOWPASS parameter

value setting rational function approximation based on low end frequencyextrapolation. For further information, See S-element Syntax in the HSPICESignal Integrity User Guide.

IBIS 4.2

Many improvements and upgrades to HSPICE support of IBIS have beendeveloped based on IBIS version 4.2 for the current release. The revisedchapter describes how IBIS model components are included in an HSPICEsimulation, with usage models for IBIS buffer, component, board-levelcomponents (EBD), and Interconnect Specification (ICM). For details, see Modeling Input/Output Buffers Using IBIS Files in Chapter 4 of the

HSPICESignal Integrity User Guide .

HSPICE RF

Periodic Time-Domain NOISE Strobing

A new RF analysis, PTDNOISE calculates the noise spectrum and the totalnoise at a point in time. Jitter in a digital threshold circuit can then bedetermined from the total noise and the digital signal slew rate. By using

the .MEASURE command, users can declare the strobejitter parameter. SeePeriodic Time-Dependent Noise Analysis (.PTDNOISE) in the HSPICE RFUser Guide .

Phase Noise Output by Source

HSPICE RF supports the of output phase noise due to the specified noisesource types. In addition, you can use specialized keywords to output phasenoise due to the specified noise source types. You can view Frequency-Dependent and Frequency-Independent Sources and Frequency and BiasDependencies. See PHASENOISE Output Syntax in Chapter 9 of the HSPICERF User Guide .

Features, Enhancements, and Changes in HSPICE Z-2007.03

Synopsys Release NotesHSPICE Version Z-2007.03-SP1

Verilog-A Update: LRM 2.2

The Verilog-A language that HSPICE supports is compliant with Verilog-AMSLanguage Reference Manual, Version 2.2, with limitations listed. The Verilog-Aimplementation in HSPICE supports a mixed design of Verilog-A descriptionsand transistor-level SPICE netlists with a simple use model. Most analysisfeatures available in HSPICE are supported for Verilog-A based devices, including AC, DC, transient analysis, statistical analysis, and optimization. TheHSPICE RF supported analysis types are HB, HBOSC, HBAC, HBNOISE,HBXF, PHASENOISE, and ENV.For full details, see Using Verilog-A, Chapter 12 of the HSPICE Simulation andAnalysis User Guide .

Custom Common Model Interface: BSIM4.6.0

The Common Model Interface (CMI) has been enhanced to cover BSIM4.6.0and previous releases on HSPICE 2006.09/09-SP1. If you are a user of olderCMI models, you will need to recompile your old cmi library or request a 3rd-party to recompile the old CMI by using HSPICE version 2006.09-SP1 or later. The compiled CMI after 2006.09-SP1 is compatible with later versions ofHSPICE.

MOSFET Reliability Analysis (MOSRA)

Two of the most critical reliability issues, effects due to the hot carrier injection

(HCI) and the negative bias temperature instability (NBTI) are addressed withthe current release. HSPICE reliability analysis allows circuit designers topredict the reliability of their design such that there are enough margins for theircircuits to function correctly over the entire lifetime. For details, see HSPICEMOSFET Reliability Analysis (MOSRA), Chapter 17 in the HSPICE Simulationand Analysis User Guide .

Known Problems, Limitations and Solutions for Version Z-2007.03

Synopsys Release NotesHSPICE Version Z-2007.03-SP1

Known Problems, Limitations and Solutions for Version Z-2007.03

Missing POST and RUNLVL directives in 2007.03 HSPICE .ini file

(Fixed in Version Z2007.03-SP1) In the MS Windows version of HSPICE, thereis an initialization file named hspice.ini in the root of the installation folder. In2007.03, the default location is C:\synopsys\Hspice_Z-2007.03\hspice.ini.

This file contains search path information for some included parts, and twoimportant options: POST and RUNLVL. POST is the option that directsHSPICE to create post-processing output files for waveform viewers. RUNLVLenables routines that automate certain speed, accuracy and convergencecontrols.

Both POST and RUNLVL were omitted in the 2007.03 hspice.ini file. If you donot explicitly set POST in your file, no waveform output file is created.

If you had previously relied on the setting of RUNLVL (default=3), then speed, accuracy, and even convergence of the simulation could differ.

To correct the problem, open the file "hspice.ini" with a text editor, and replacethe line:

.option

with:

.option post runlvl

Note that version 2006.09 and 2006.09-SP1 HSPICE installed on the same

Windows PC will read the newer HSPICE initialization file, so this problem canshow up on those versions as well.

Multithreading and Active Devices

Beginning with the Z-2007.03 release, the limits for when HSPICE will usemore than 1 thread are 512 transistor devices (MOSFET, JFET, BJT) or 1024diodes. If the circuit does not have the required number of active devices,HSPICE will automatically use a single thread.

Common Installer Error Message

Due to a limitation in the current Common Installer, the post-installation script ininteractive mode is not supported.

It is safe for end users to ignore the installation error message.

The following error messages in the $installdir/install.log are safe to be ignored:

ERROR : Failed to execute $installdir/hspice/bin/config

ERROR : Remove temporary directory: /tmp/synopsys_11744

+ exec tixwish $installdir/hspice/bin/tcltk/config.tcl

+ /$installdir/hspice

Searching for Commands in the HSPICE Online Help System

Due to a limitation in the WebWorks Help search engine, leading periods (.) incommand keywords are not recognized and users will get a “no results”message when including the period. For example, a search on “.SAVE” will

fail.Best Workaround—Use the Index capability: Select Index > C > commands for a full listing of HSPICE/HSPICE RF commands. Clicking a .<CMD>  takesyou to the command reference listing.

For control options, select Index > O > options and select from .OPTION <option_of_choice>.

Another workaround is to search on the command without the leading period. This will produce results but will not weight the return, resulting on multipleentries for a command that is an English word. “SAVE” will result in many hits, while “BIASCHK” will find the command reference quicker.

Troubleshooting Browser Problems

This section explains how to resolve browser-specific problems with viewingHelp.

The browser windowdisplays a link in thestandard browser

instead of openingthe Help topic.

Click on the link to display the desired Help topic.

If you are viewing a different domain or site than the one inwhich WebWorks is installed, you may see this behavior.Security considerations prevent browsers from followingscripting instructions to open a document in a different domainthan the one currently active in the browser.

The topic or thenavigation frame didnot load completelyor disappeared.

Click the browser Reload button once or twice. If the page stilldoes not appear, click in the address bar and press the Returnkey to reload the frameset.

To avoid this problem, do not resize the browser window whilea page is loading.

There are errors in

font display orparagraphalignment.

1. Check that style sheets are enabled in your web browser.

The HTML pages reference a Cascading Style Sheet(CSS) file.

2. If you are using Netscape 4.X, upgrade your browser.Newer browsers follow the W3C standards for displayingHTML more closely.

Pages and the Indexpanel load slowly.

1. Performance might be slow over DSL or Cable modemconnections. Unless you are working over a fast LAN,consider installing a local copy of Help for betterperformance.

2. If you are using Netscape 4.X, upgrade your browser.Newer versions of Netscape load Help more than twice as

quickly.

Internet Explorerwarns about "ActiveContent" and doesnot open Help

This is a normal security feature of Windows XP ServicePack 2 that is triggered by the JavaScript used in the Helpsystem navigation.

To view Help during your current Windows session:

1. Left-click in the yellow warning bar and choose AllowBlocked Content.

2. Click Yes in the confirmation dialog box.To turn off this security warning:

1. Select Tools > Internet options.
