Incumbents reinforce through their oversight of technical training programs and professional mentoring the importance of continual learning, a strong work ethic, professional achievement, and commitment to the value of outstanding customer service to the benefit of the University mission and for personal and professional advancement. The Master of trades is dedicated to the orderly and effective succession of personnel within the work unit to facilitate advancement of apprentices to journey level positions and to ready internal journeymen and seniors for advancement when position openings become available in their respective shops. Incumbents shall represent the highest professional example of their trades and represent the core values of the facilities department. Each shop will typically be allocated a single master level position. The typical functions described here are the same for all eligible trades and are intended to supplement senior level qualifications, responsibilities, duties, and other job requirements found in the senior job descriptions of the respective shops. Summary

Typical Functions

1. Assists the Chairman of the Apprenticeship Committee in design, implementation, and performance monitoring of academic training requirements and on the job training (OJT) checklists for all fours years of the Department of Labor (DOL) certified apprentice program.

2. Assists the shop foreman with all aspects of training and professional development of internal personnel.

3. Assists the shop foreman with implementation of new work methods and practices to include introduction or advancement of computerized work management and data collections systems.

4. Assists the apprentices with academic and OJT requirements when problems arise with the successful completion of apprentice task lists.

5. Assists with resolving minor disputes that may arise between apprentices and assigned Journeymen trainers on OJT task lists. The Master may recommend changes in training assignments to the foreman or apprentice committee chairman.

6. Attends advanced skill level training programs, continuous improvement seminars, and training for new business related applications for trade as well as work order delivery management and customer service innovation as provided by professional trade organizations and university peer groups.

7. Attends the train-the-trainer programs in order to transfer knowledge attained through advanced training programs to shop personnel at all levels. Provides training as requested by shop Foreman.

8. Recommends training programs from direct personal experience that furthers the learning opportunities and advancement potential of all shop Journeyman and Seniors.

9. Assists shop foreman with attainment of improved ancillary skills by personnel to include computing, verbal, and mathematical self-improvement. Schedules self-improvement activities as approved by the facilities director.

10. Performs advanced level trade duties as part of the working crew.11. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

1. Skilled in the repair, maintenance, and construction techniques common to the Plumbing trade.2. Skilled in estimating time and material requirements for assigned projects.3. Comprehensive knowledge of applicable codes, standards, and regulations.4. Skilled with mathematical computations.5. Ability to read specifications from blueprints and schematic drawings.6. Ability to build to specifications from blueprints and schematic drawings. 7. Ability to work without supervision.8. Skilled in use of various hand and power tools common to trade.9. Basic computer skills.10. Skilled at troubleshooting problems.11. Customer service skills.12. Ability to train and guide less senior employees.

Minimum Qualifications

One year of experience in a Senior trade position within Utah State University’s Facilities Department is required. Must have a written recommendation from the shop foreman to be considered.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

The position requires considerable physical activity. Employees must have sufficient strength to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position including heavy lifting and/or pushing and pulling of heavy

objects. Employees must be prepared to assume uncomfortable positions such as crawling, kneeling, and squatting. Additionally, the work environment can include confined or narrow spaces. Employees must adhere to safety precautions and may be required to use protective equipment.
