HP AdvanceStack 10BT Switch Module Installation and Reference Guide

The features of the HP J3212A AdvanceStack 10BT Switch Module are:

■ Increased Throughput to Servers. Up to 4 servers can be connected to this module. Each port will dedicate up to 10 Mbit/s to each server.

■ Automatic Port Switching. If you have not changed the port configuration for each hub in the stack in the ASCII console or HP AdvanceStack Assistant (setting up security, disabling ports), the Management Module will move the ports onto the four different segments for you automatically on power up.

■ Load Balancing. In both the ASCII console and HP AdvanceStack Assistant, you can select the Load Balancing feature which causes the software to examine your network traffic and redistribute the hub ports to balance the network load.

■ Connect the Segments Together. Users on one segment can communicate with the users on another segment through the Switch Module backplane. Over the backplane, the traffic flows from segment to segment at a latency of 67 microseconds for a 64 byte packet.

The Switch Module has four external ports. The Xcvr (Transceiver) port supports twisted-pair, thin coax, and fiber media for external connections to servers at 10 Mbit/s, half duplex. Internally, the Switch Module connects to the four segments in the hub stack. The illustration below shows a top view of a Switch Module in a Switching Hub connecting to the four internal segments.

This guide shows you how to install your Switch Module into your HP Switching Hub.

After self-test, if the hubs have not been configured, the HP Management Module distributes hub ports across the four segments in the hub stack:

Note that the Xcvr (Transceiver) port and is not automatically distributed but you can distribute it manually using the ASCII console or HP AdvanceStack Assistant.

Viewing Port Segmentation

To see how the Switch Module distributed the ports, push the Segment Display Button on the Management Module to light the port LEDs for each segment.

Note. If you have used the ASCII console or HP AdvanceStack Assistant to set up any of the following features:

then the Switch Module will use the configuration and segmentation you set up. If you want the Switch Module to distribute the ports automatically, select the Configuration/Reset option in the ASCII console, then select Default Hub.

Connect Cables From the Switch Module to the Servers or Other Devices

The Switch Module has three twisted-pair ports and one transceiver slot where you can install a fiber-optic, twisted-pair, thin coax, or AUI transceiver. The following illustration shows a Switch Module with a fiber-optic transceiver module installed.

If a port is enabled and link beat is detected, the LED above the port will light. Link beat indicates that the cable is connected to a powered-on node at the other end of the cable. Detailed instructions to connect cables are provided in the transceiver manual.

This module is meant to be connected to servers. You can connect this module to other Ethernet hubs. However, be sure that a hub attached to one of these Switch Module ports is not also attached

to one of the hub stack’s ports, or you will have a network loop.

HP recommends using a stand-alone switch such as the HP J3125A AdvanceStack Switch 200 or HP J3126A AdvanceStack Switch 100 for switching other hubs.

Description of LEDs

The Switch Module has the following LEDs:

Where to Go From Here

You are now finished installing the module and connecting cables. No software configuration of the Switch Module is necessary. However, you can use the ASCII console or HP AdvanceStack Assistant to configure, monitor, and troubleshoot your module as described below.

Viewing New ASCII Console Commands

After the Switch Module is added to the stack, the ASCII console has a new menu item titled “Switch Controls” that appears in the main menu. From this menu you can configure the switch with these commands

LED State Meaning

Switch Module Counters in the ASCII Console

Note that the ASCII console shows statistics for data transmitted in two directions.

Counter Name Definition Valid Range For Sum of Outbound and Inbound Counters

Corrective Action if over Valid Range

Octets Number of bytes in error-free packets. Less than 500,000 bytes per second sustained (not just at the peak).*

Too many users are trying to access the same server. Copy the frequently used data or application to a second server to increase throughput.

Unicast Number of error-free packets ad-dressed to a single node.

Less than 4,000 packets per sec-ond.*

Too many users are trying to access the same server. Copy the frequently used data or application to a second server to increase throughput.

Multicast Packets Number of packets addressed to two or more nodes on the network, but not to broadcast.

Less than 4,000 packets per sec-ond.*

Use a LAN analyzer to track the source address of the offending node and check the content of the packet to identify the appli-cation sending these multicasts. Then reconfigure the applica-tion to stop the multicasts.

Errors Number of packets with data errors or incorrect frame alignment.

Less than .1% of good packets.

This counter indicates faulty cabling. Check cabling length. Replace bad cables if any.

Broadcast Packets Number of packets addressed to every-one in the network. These packets con-sume CPU resources from each node on the network.

Less than 200 pack-ets per second.*

Decrease the number of nodes in an IP subnet or IPX network by using more routers. Consult Novell Netware documentation on how to reduce broadcasts in an IPX network.

*The port counters in the ASCII console show totals, not number per second. Display these counters twice over a period of one second to see if the value falls in the valid range.

The same functionality is offered in HP AdvanceStack Assistant. For information on how to use HP AdvanceStack Assistant with the Switch Module, see the CD-ROM included with HP AdvanceStack Assistant.

Removing the Module

The module is removed from the hub by reversing the installation steps described earlier in this guide. To remove the module, follow these steps:

1. Remove power from the hub by unplugging the power cord.

2. Unscrew the two captured screws holding the module.

3. Pull the extractor handles up.

4. Pull the module out of the slot.

Warning: Replace the Expansion Slot cover plate over the slot using the two screws that hold it in place. Be careful not to overtighten the screws. When using the hub without the Switch Module, the cover plate must always be installed. This is required not only for safety, but also to ensure proper hub cooling.

Troubleshooting

Problem Solution

EITHER:- All LEDs are lit on the hub and remain lit.- The Fault LED is on for the Switch Module.

Verify that the Extender Cable is securely connected at each end.Verify that the Switch Module is fully inserted, extractor handles down, screws tightened.

The Switch Module didn’t distribute the ports upon bootup.

EITHER:The Switch Module didn’t distributes ports evenly on hubs because you configured at least one of the features listed in the Note on page 7.ORYou disabled port distribution in the ASCII console. Re-enable port distribution.

The LED for a twisted-pair port or the Xcvr port on the Switch Module is not lit when a cable is connected.

Verify that the cable is secure.Try a different cable.Verify that the connected device is powered on.Try a different port.

I had specified certain ports to be on isolated segments. What happens to these ports once the Switch Module is added to the stack?

The ports were put on connected segments. You can view the port arrangement in the ASCII console or HP AdvanceStack Assistant.

After I installed the Switching Hubs and the Switch Module, the Act(ivity) and Col(lision) LEDs are on solid and the network is very slow.

You probably have a network loop. Verify that you do not have a second cable connected from hub-to-hub (such as thin coax) in addition to the Extender Cable.
