F O R E W O R D This booklet contains the schedules of all courses taught to the predoctoral dental students and dental hygiene

students in the College of Dentistry. Also, it contains the College of Dentistry’s academic calendar and

examination schedules for the current academic year. Please be advised that the calendar and schedules are

subject to change without advance notice.

Students in the College of Dentistry are expected to attend all scheduled lectures, laboratories and clinic

assignments. Attendance taken in the classrooms, laboratories and clinics is related directly to student

accountability and professional responsibility. When students miss twenty percent (20%) of scheduled classes,

laboratories or clinic assignments for which they have not secured an approved excuse, three percentage (3%)

points will be deducted from their final grade in that course. This may include days missed for unauthorized

travel.

Students must not make travel arrangements prior to the last day of the semester examinations. Unforeseen

circumstances, such as inclement weather closures, may result in rescheduled examinations.

Requests for excused absences must be submitted to the Office of the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs

within twenty-four (24) hours following the absence, unless the student is too ill to do so, and must be

accompanied by the necessary supporting documents. Requests for excused absences for missed examinations

or quizzes due to illness will be processed by the Office of the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. All other

excuses will be provided by the respective course directors.

Unexcused absence from a scheduled examination will result in a zero (0) grade for that examination Students, who receive excuses, must make arrangements with the Course Director of the missed examination,

within forty-eight (48) hours of returning to school, to take the make-up examination. The make-up

examination must be taken within 5 business days of the students return. All make-up examinations not given

or rescheduled within the specified time indicated, due to negligence on the part of the student, will result in an

F, numerical grade of zero (0) for that examination.

Excused absence from clinic service assignments must be made up at a subsequent date approved by the

departmental chairman and the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs.

During scheduled midterm examinations all (D1) first year dental students’ classes will be held in the Smart

Classroom

During midterm examination period, all classes are suspended for (D2) second year dental, (D3) third year

dental, (D4) fourth year dental, (DH3) first year dental hygiene and (DH4) second year dental hygiene students.

Before the final examination period, all classes should be completed. If not completed, the class is suspended

for (D1) first year dental, (D2) second year dental, (D3) third year dental, (D4) fourth year dental, (DH3) first

year dental hygiene and (DH4) second year dental hygiene students.

During both midterm and final examination periods, clinics are open by appointment only and all service

assignments closed.

Students must not make travel arrangements prior to the last day of the semester examinations. Unforeseen

circumstances, such as inclement weather closures, may result in rescheduled examinations.

Grades in the College of Dentistry are reported as:

A = 4.0 (excellent) | B = 3.0 (above average) | C = 2.0 (average) | F = 0.0 (failing)

vi

Satisfactory performance is required in all courses for promotions and graduation.

In addition, (D2) second year dental students are required to take and pass Part I of the National Board Dental

Examinations before promotion to the (D3) third year dental class. (D4) fourth year dental students must take

and pass Part II of the National Board Dental Examinations to receive a diploma from the College of Dentistry.

The Executive Committee of the College of Dentistry will review and make recommendations concerning the

academic performance of each student at the end of each semester and the Summer session.

Howard University and the College of Dentistry Policy on email address All (D1) first year dental, (D2) second year dental, (D3) third year dental, (D4) fourth year dental, (DH3) first

year dental hygiene and (DH4) second year dental hygiene students are issued an email address from the

University. It is the responsibility of the student to ensure their Howard University email address is enabled.

Howard University and the College of Dentistry will use the students’ official University email address for all

correspondence.

The students will receive correspondence from secondary entities (exp. Blackboard, ExamSoft, etc.,) within the

University and the College of Dentistry. Therefore, the student is responsible for verifying that all secondary

entities have the student’s official University email address.

The students are responsible to check their Howard University email address regularly when on campus or off

campus and during University closure for inclement weather, holidays or special events.

If the students do not adhere to the above, this may result in missing important notifications from the

University, the College of Dentistry and all secondary entities, such as; grades, schedule changes, and other

information that could adversely impact on a student’s grade and academic standing.

Howard University and the College of Dentistry Policy on personal information The students are responsible for updating their personal information.

The University and the College of Dentistry must maintain current address information for all enrolled students.

All (D1) first year dental, (D2) second year dental, (D3) third year dental, (D4) fourth year dental, (DH3) first

year dental hygiene and (DH4) second year dental hygiene students should update their address with the

University and the College of Dentistry electronically by logging on to the Howard University Bison Web and

HOWARD UNIVERISTY COLLEGE OF DENTISTRY

ETHICS AND PROCEDURES FOR EXAMINATIONS

EXAMS WILL BE ADMINISTERED EXCLUSIVELY VIA EXAMSOFT AND/OR BLACKBOARD ON PERSONAL

COMPUTERS. ALL PERSONAL COMPUTERS SHOULD BE IN GOOD WORKING ORDER AND FREE OF NON

ACADEMIC MATERIAL TO FACILITATE THE DOWNLOADING OF EXAMS.

STUDENTS WILL NOT BE EXCUSED FROM TAKING A SCHEDULED EXAM DUE TO LACK OF ADEQUATE SPACE

ON THE COMPUTER, THE EXISTENCE OF VIRUSES, OR ANY OTHER COMPUTER PROBLEM.

STUDENTS SHOULD NOTIFY THE OFFICE OF ACADEMIC AND STUDENT AFFAIRS AT LEAST TWO DAYS (48

HOURS) PRIOR TO EXAM ABOUT EXISTING OR POTENTIAL COMPUTER PROBLEMS SO THAT OTHER

ARRANGEMENTS MAY BE MADE.

1. Bags, books, papers, cellular phones, pagers, coats, caps, hats, and other miscellaneous materials are not

allowed in testing rooms during examinations. First offenders that are found with any of the

aforementioned will be dismissed from the exam and will earn a zero for the exam. Second and

subsequent offenders may be suspended and/or dismissed from the College of Dentistry.

2. If a room Proctor notices any student clearly copying answers from another student, the student that was

found copying answers should be notified that his/her activities have been observed and that a report is

being sent to the Dean. However, the student should be allowed to complete the examination. The

Proctor should, in this instance, submit a written report of his/her action to the Dean, “Irregularity

Noted” affix the date and time. If the Proctor notices that copying is going on and the one being copied

from is obviously not a participant, then the student should be moved to keep him/her from being placed

in jeopardy of being the “Innocent By-Stander”.

3. If any student and/or proctor is of the opinion that the facilities for any examination are too crowded

and/or poorly arranged for a student to protect his/her answers, such student and/or proctor should

immediately register a complaint with the individual who is in charge. In the event that prompt,

corrective action is not or cannot be taken, then the student and/or proctor should register the appropriate

complaint in writing to the Dean immediately following completion of the examination.

4. Each student is responsible for protecting the integrity of his/her answers. If cheating is noted during the

examination, or if cheating is disclosed by the computer during processing, candidates involved, whether

they be copiers or those copied from, are subject to penalty. The matter will be referred to the Judiciary

Board of the College followed by appropriate recommendations to the Dean for punitive action

(suspension and/or expulsion is the usual penalty for cheating). This warning notice will NOT be

repeated, but will be in effect and applicable to all examinations in the College of Dentistry

5. If the form of cheating is not copying from another individual, but involves the use of notes, papers,

books, or other miscellaneous materials or procedures, then the procedure for verification, as stated

above, should be followed. The item should be taken from the student and the student should be

allowed to complete the examination. A written report of the incident, as well as, the “evidence” taken

from the student must be sent to the Dean.

ix

6. Talking or any other form of verbal or non-verbal communication will NOT be allowed in the exam

rooms. If any student is observed talking, signaling with fingers or other objects, he/she should be told

to stop and written verification noted (as indicated above). This observance must be followed by a

written notice to the Dean. If the student is observed talking, signaling, etc., a second time, the

student should be dismissed from the examination and should report, immediately, to the Dean or

his designee. An oral report must be submitted immediately to the Dean, followed by a written report

from the Proctor.

7. Proctors and students share responsibility for the integrity of the exams. The student will retake any

examination for which any irregularity is found.

8. Students will remain seated after concluding their examinations and simply raise their hands for the

Proctor’s approval to be dismissed, i.e., verification of exam upload. They will then leave the

examination room through the marked exit and are not permitted to loiter outside the examination room

nor in any adjacent hallways.

9. During examinations, which are two or more hours, students will be allowed to take one bathroom break

to use the restroom facilities after obtaining permission from the proctor(s). Students needing a

bathroom break should raise their hand and receive permission from the proctor before standing up

10. Students will adhere to seating charts during all examination.

11. Students are held responsible for knowing and adhering to all the above protocol before, during and after

exams without faculty intervention.

The official emblem of dentistry was adopted by the American Dental Association (ADA) in 1965.

A Mythological History Its origin dates back to ancient times and to Asclepius, one of the earliest gods associated with health renowned

for his healing abilities, humane treatments and remedies. He can be recognized by his staff entwined with a

single snake. In ancient cultures the snake shedding its skin symbolized rejuvenation, healing and rebirth. The

best known of his children include Hygieia, from whose name the word “hygiene” is derived and Panaceia from

which the word “panacea” a cure-all or universal remedy originates.

The Design The ADA uses as its central figure a variation of the staff of Asclepius. In the background of the design are

branches of 32 leaves and 20 berries, representing the number of permanent and primary teeth. The symbol is

surrounded by an intersecting triangle and circle forming the periphery of the design. The Greek letter Δ (delta)

represents the letter D in the word dentistry. The Greek letter Ο (omicron) represents “odont” meaning tooth.

The Official Color The design uses as its background color a shade of lilac, which is the official color of dentistry. The color was

chosen to trim dental schools' graduation caps, gowns and dental emblems.
