HOW WE USE THE WATER CYCLE Evaporation The sun heats up water and makes it evaporate and rise into the air as water vapour. That's why puddles disappear on a hot day. Condensation As the water vapour rises, it cools and condenses to form water droplets. Clouds are formed when water droplets and pieces of dust join together. Precipitation The water falls back to Earth as rain, sleet, snow or hail. The word "precipitation" comes from Latin and means "falling". Sources of water Yorkshire Water takes water from rivers and from wells called boreholes. It also stores water in huge artificial lakes called reservoirs. Water Treatment Works Water needs to be treated to make it safe to drink. At the water treatment works the"baddies" are removed from the water. Piping in and out Water comes to your house through pipes called mains. When you have used the water, it goes into another set of pipes called sewers. Sewage Treatment Works The dirty water (called sewage) needs to be treated to remove other "bad- dies" before it is safe to be returned to the water cycle.
