How we prevented a

LOGISTICAL LOCKDOWN to our supply chainThe global COVID-19 pandemic has caused significant disruptions

in the healthcare supply chain. With many of the markets we

serve under lockdown, it has been crucial for us to ensure that

essential medicines and healthcare supplies continue to be

made available to those who need them the most.

Here are three ways that have helped us ensure we continue to

fulfil our mission of making healthcare more accessible during

the pandemic.

Working with governments and healthcare associations across the region has always been an integral part of our business. During this unprecedented time, it has been an even

bigger priority to ensure the ongoing movement of critical medical supplies through various transportation channels – land, sea and air.

COVID-19 response measures have been implemented by country crisis management task forces from various min-istries and departments beyond Health, including Trade & Industry, Transportation, Defence and other Enforcement bodies. Understanding the dynamics of the decision-making process at country level allowed us to align with directives and ensured our ability to continue to operate.

In the face of lockdowns and movement control plans, we obtained exemption letiers from governments to allow free-dom of movement for our employees and transport partners across checkpoints and provincial borders. This ensured that all land deliveries of essential medicines and healthcare sup-plies continued.

In geographically complex countries like the Philippines and Indonesia, we faced additional challenges. In the Philippines, the suspension of domestic passenger flights presented some exceptionally complicated situations. We tackled the situation by working with the Philippine Air Force to charter flights to transport medication to the Visayas and Mindanao regions. We also partnered with the Philippine Coast Guard to transport critical medical supplies to main ports and with the Indonesian Army to continue supplying to remote locations in Papua and more.

In other markets, including Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan, we collaborated with local and federal governments to ensure that our driversand other frontline employees could continue to carry out their services.

As the COVID-19 crisis evolves over the next several months, we will continue our dialogue with various health depart-ments and other relevant government authorities across the region to be exempted from specific lockdown measures that may restrict access to medicines and healthcare supplies.

uring this extraordinary period, we expedited the launch of digital

platforms in several markets. This included a fast-tracked launch of eZRx, an interactive engagement portal for customers to place orders for prescription drugs, medical devices, or consumer health products - anytime, anywhere.

eZRx makes up for the inability of sales reps to visit customers due to social distancing measures and lockdowns. The platform ensures that all orders are fulfilled, while maintaining efficiency and product integrity, and is currently available in the Philippines, Singapore, and Malaysia with plans to launch in other markets as soon as possible.

As COVID-19 continues to spread, the fear of infections and saturated healthcare systems are driving large numbers of people online for medical consultations. To improve access to health services during the quarantine period in the Philippines, we are working closely with the Department of Health (DOH) and doctors’ associations to launch eZConsult, a telemedicine application. We plan to launch in August, working closely with our pharmacy partners who will process the electronic prescriptions and deliver the medication to patients. We aim to replicate this in other Asian markets as soon as possible.

Another platform we recentlylaunched is eZTracker, the first blockchain-based application in Asia that allows users to trace a product’s origins and authenticity by scanning a code on the packaging. A BBC article highlighted a rising trend of counterfeit medicines due to COVID-19, posing a major threat to supply chain integrity.

With eZTracker, Zuellig Pharma and the medicine’s manufacturer are immediately notified if an unregistered product is detected and can bring this up with the relevant authorities. This app is currently available in Hong Kong and as part of our response to COVID-19, we have accelerated its launch in the Philippines to help support the country’s mass vaccination programme and track up to one million flu vaccine doses.

Our wholly-owned subsidiary Klinify, Malaysia’s largest cloud-based medical digital assistant for doctors, has also added several features to provide up to date information and insights about COVID-19 trends, helping doctors to improve pa ent outcomes.

In addition, we are working closely with several of our other digital partners – MedAdvisor, Docquity, Reach52, and Sensely to help them scale up their solutions in the markets we serve. All these digital start-ups have developed digital health solutions that help tackle COVID-19 and will help improve patient outcomes.

Since the early onset of the pandemic, our teams have been firmly committed to preventing any disruptions to the supply chains, while taking precautionary measures to protect themselves. Our Business Continuity Plans have been tested in real time and have held up well.

In Taiwan, our team worked closely with the Taiwan Center for Disease Control, and in Malaysia with Ministry of Health, to implement measures that minimise the risk of virus transmission within our premises. This includes comprehensive safe-distancing measures and regular communication with employees to ensure compliance. In Myanmar, we passed a rigorous inspection conducted by the Ministry of Labour and Immigration and Ministry of Health and Sports who visited and inspected our warehouses to ensure that we are following official guidelines. The COVID-19 pandemic is unprecedented, and it is still highly uncertain how it will evolve. However, with the measures we have put in place, jointly with our customers, clients and partners, we believe that we are well-placed to see this through.
