How we can help the environment with
grade 3/4
For our Inquiry Topic ‘How can we help the environment?’ We decided that our main focus was ‘How could we inform our local community to help reduce their use of plastic coffee cups and plastic straws?’ As a part of our ‘Taking Action’ phase of Inquiry we wrote an email to Frank Green (The Sustainable Cup company).
We were hoping they would come out to talk to us and inform us how we can help educate the Richmond Primary School Community on stopping their use of single use plastic coffee cups. We were lucky enough for Frank Green to come out to educate us with some interesting facts and explain their companies purpose. We learnt some great facts and are inspired to continue our action against single use plastic coffee cups in the Richmond Community. Dean was even inspired to get one of these Frank Green cups for his daily coffee habit!
As a special thank you to Richmond Primary School and to show support to Domino and Austin, Frank Green have provided a discount code for anyone who is wanting to think sustainable and purchase a Frank Green reusable cup. Let's work together to no longer use non-reusable coffee cups at Richmond Primary School!
Just visit https://frankgreen.com.au/collections/reusable-cups
The code is: fgxrps10 which you enter at the checkout and gives you 10% off your purchase.

June Reports
The Semester 1 Reports will be sent home with students next week. These documents are an important tool in support of your child’s learning that aims to strengthen the partnership between teachers, students and their families.
The purpose of the June Report is to give an overview of your child’s learning for Terms 1 and 2 (which make up Semester 1) and also to give recommendations for learning into Semester 2. It is part of the ‘package’ we offer to families about the tracking of students’ learning. This year we have been using the online portal ‘SeeSaw’ to also share learning progress through the posting of student work achievements with families at home.
The format of the written June report is designed to give students and their families a snapshot of their current learning based on these classroom achievements and assessed learning progress. The first section gives an overview of the curriculum that is aimed to be taught based on the expected learning for the grade (or Year) level of your child. We are implementing the Victorian Curriculum as our Learning Framework from Prep to Year 6 so the list of skills and concepts included in your child’s report relate directly to your child’s Year level in this framework (please visit http://victoriancurriculum.vcaa.vic.edu.au/ for more information.)
Next in our report format you will find the Summary Page. This has a chart that shows a series of dots indicating the level of achievement for your child based on their Year level against the Victorian Curriculum. (i.e. F corresponds with Prep, Level 1 = Year 1, Level 2 = Year 2 and so on.)
You will find a yellow band in this chart that covers half the area for your child’s level. This indicates that we base the report on the expectation your child will have achieved half of the requirements for the year with the report covering the program up to June. This will see the ‘Expected’ level dot to sit at this half way mark. A dot on the line to the left indicates progress 6 months behind Expected levels, a dot on the line to the right indicates progress 6 months ahead of Expected levels. Corresponding dots beyond these lines sees achievement 12 months or more ahead or behind.
The last section of the report gives written information about the learning that has been achieved; the learning goals for the future; and what the school and families can do in support of further development. We hope there will be lots of useful suggestions in these boxes to help support the Home Learning for each student. A further opportunity to discuss this content will be during the Teacher Interviews which will be conducted in week 3 of next term. For our students in Grades 1 to 6 these will take the form of a Student Led Conference running for 10 minutes, with 5 minutes left afterwards for parents to have an optional one-on-one discussion with the teacher. This will be a chance for these students to share the learning highlights form their SeeSaw accounts and to present their learning goals for the rest of the year. If you have a pressing need to discuss any matter from your child’s report with your child’s teacher you are welcome to make a time with them in the weeks before the Student Led Conference is held. Please contact them after you receive the June Report or when we return from the holiday break to book a before or after school time. The Student Led Conference bookings will be co-ordinated through Signmee, opening next term.
Supporting Reading
The reports are full of great ideas to support future learning. Here is a suggestion taken from the Reports about ideas for supporting your child with their reading. Hopefully you will find it helpful for when you are helping your child:
When your child reads to you, use the Pause, Prompt, Praise strategy. When they stop at a difficult word, remind them to pause and give them about five seconds to think. If they can’t figure out the word on their own, prompt them by reminding them to use one of the strategies their teacher talked about e.g. say Try that again, or ask them a question about the meaning of the sto-ry, or ask them to think of a word that makes sense. If they don’t know the word after they have tried it twice, tell them what the word is. When they try hard, praise them and tell them something good you noticed. You might say; “I like the way you tried to work that out” or “I’m glad you noticed that didn’t make sense/sound right/look right” “I saw you checking the picture. Good idea!” “I like the way you skipped the word and then went back”

INQUIRING INTO SUSTAINABLILITY
The students in FLAG have been learning how soft plastic can have a negative impact on the environment and ways people can reduce their use of it.
Ava in 5/6C has taken the action of using the Recycle bins at our local supermarkets. Shed like you to do it too!
Reduce Reuse Recycle ♻️
Did you know… All of the plastic ever created still exists!
Lots of Australians still use plastic bags to shop!
By 2050 there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish!
Most plastic bags are non-biodegradable!
Worldwide more than 2 million plastic bags are used every minute!
Coles and Woolworths have soft plastic Recycle bins please use
them!!!
PLEASE help save the environment!!!
