CASE STUDY
• RQ 1 – Perceptions about Nursing Shortage Severity
The first RQ examined how stakeholder perceptions differed regarding the severity of the p p g g yICU nursing shortage in Oman. To explore these perceptions fully, stakeholders were asked about various dimensions of the problem. Five interview questions collected insight about RQ 1: Q1 adequate number of nurses Q2Q1 adequate number of nurses, Q2 nurse/patient ratios, Q3A reasonableness of workload, Q3B manageability of workload, and Q4 effectiveness of deployment (see Table 3).

• Interview Question #2: Describe your personal decision-making that prompted your use of complementary modalities.
This interview question prompted discussions on treatment selection and the process of selecting complementary therapies for
nursing intervention. The variable of time availability was a predominate theme in this part of the discussion. Keywords that
emerged from the discussions included: Knowing and Feeling reflecting an intuitive nature of treatment selection; Management of
symptoms or medication use or failure. The concept of symptom management required further analysis as the participants
described specific symptoms such as headache, nausea, stress, aggressive behavior, crying, pain, and agitation. These terms were
presented in a summative percentage representation in addition to the broader keyword, all symptoms. Comparison of the
percentage of keyword frequency identified in the first group to the second group demonstrated saturation of data for this
interview question.
