What Is Social Media?Social media are Internet sites where people interact freely, sharing and discussing information about each other and theirlives, using a multimedia mix of personal words, pictures, videos and audio. At these Web sites, individuals and groupscreate and exchange content and engage in person-to-personconversations.They appear in many forms including blogs and microblogs, forums and message boards, social networks, wikis, virtualworlds, social bookmarking, tagging and news, writingcommunities, digital storytelling and scrapbooking, and data, content, image and video sharing, podcast portals, andcollective intelligence. There are lots of well-known sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn,Twitter, YouTube, Pinterest, Instagram, Snapchat, MySpace,Flickr, WordPress, Blogger, Typepad, LiveJournal, Wikipedia,Wetpaint, Wikidot, Second Life, Reddit, Lulu and others. 7. How Facebook Got StartedFacemash, the Facebooks predecessor, opened onOctober 28, 2003. Initially, the website wasinvented by a Harvard student, Mark Zuckerberg, and three of his classmates Andrew McCollum,Chris Hughes and Dustin Moskovitz. Zuckerbergwrote the software for the Facemash website whenhe was in his second year of college. The websitewas set up as a type of hot or not game forHarvard students. The website allowed visitors tocompare two student pictures side-by-side and letthem choose who was hot and who was not.In January 2004, Mark Zuckerberg began writing thecode for a new website, known as 'theFacebook'. Hesaid in an article in The Harvard Crimson that hewas inspired to make Facebook from the incident ofFacemash: "It is clear that the technology needed tocreate a centralized Website is readily available ...the benefits are many." 8. How Twitter Got StartedTwitter began as an idea that Twitter co-founder JackDorsey had in 2006. Dorsey had originally imaginedTwitter as an SMS-based communications platform.Groups of friends could keep tabs on what each otherwere doing based on their status updates. Like texting, but not.During a brainstorming session at the podcastingcompany Odeo. Jack Dorsey proposed this SMS basedplatform to Odeo's co-founder Evan Williams. Evan, andhis co-founder Biz Stone by extension, gave Jack thego-ahead to spend more time on the project anddevelop it further. In its early days, Twitter was referred to as "twttr". Atthe time, a popular trend, sometimes to gain domainname advantage, was to drop vowels in the name oftheir companies and services. Software developer NoahGlass is credited with coming up with the original nametwttr as well as its final incarnation as Twitter. 9. How YouTube Got StartedYouTube was founded by Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim, who were all early employees ofPayPal. Prior to PayPal, Hurley studied design at IndianaUniversity of Pennsylvania. Chen and Karim studiedcomputer science together at the University of Illinois atUrbana-Champaign. YouTube's early headquarters weresituated above a pizzeria and Japanese restaurant in SanMateo, California. The domain name "YouTube.com" wasactivated on February 14, 2005, and the website wasdeveloped over the subsequent months. The creatorsoffered the public a preview of the site in May 2005, sixmonths before YouTube made its official debut.Like many technology startups, YouTube was started asan angel-funded enterprise from a makeshift office in agarage. In November 2005, venture firm Sequoia Capitalinvested an initial $3.5 million; additionally, Roelof Botha, partner of the firm and former CEO of PayPal, joined theYouTube board of directors. In April 2006, Sequoia and ArtisCapital Management put an additional $8 million into thecompany, which had experienced hugely popular growthwithin its first few months. The first YouTube video wastitled Me at the zoo, and shows co-founder Jawed Karim atthe San Diego Zoo. The video was uploaded on April 23,2005, and can still be viewed on the site. 10. How Pinterest Got StartedPinterest allows users to save images andcategorize them on different boards. They canfollow other users' boards if they have similartastes. The evolution of Pinterest is based on theshared interest of its users and relies on itsmembers to produce the content. OnAugust 6, each Google+ member had 150 invitations to giveout until September 20, 2011, when Google+ opened toeveryone 18 years of age or older without the need for aninvitation. It was opened for a younger age group (13 yearsor older in US and most countries, 14 or older in SouthKorea and Spain, 16 or older in the Netherlands) on January26, 2012. Google+ is available as a website and on mobiledevices. Before the launch, Google referred to Google+ as GoogleCircles, a name alluding to its emphasis on organizingfriendship information.
