How To Stop Church Gossip
Mildred, the church gossip, and self-appointed monitor of the church's morals, kept sticking her nose into other people's business. Several members did not approve of her extra- curricular activities, but feared her enough to maintain their silence.
She made a mistake, however, when she accused Frank, a new member, of being an alcoholic after she saw his old pickup parked in front of the town's only bar one afternoon. She emphatically told Frank (and several others) that every one seeing it there would know what he was doing! Frank, a man of few words, stared at her for a moment and just turned and walked away.
He didn't explain, defend, or deny. He said nothing.
Later that evening, Frank quietly parked his pickup in front of Mildred's house
...... walked home ......
and left it there all night.
(You’ve got to love Frank!)

Reverend Margaret
From theClergy
It is with pleasure that I have to announcetwo new members to our village.
Firstly, in calendar order, we will be welcoming theReverend James Robertson
thon Tuesday 26 July in a Service of Institution by the Bishop of St Albans asRector of St Katharine's, Ickleford and St Peter's Holwell
and Vicar of St Mary's, Pirton, the three villages which make up our Benefice.
This service will necessarily take place in St Mary's Pirton because of the numbers due to attend, but we, in St Katharine's, are looking forward to a service on Sunday
st31 July when Rev'd James and his wife Barbara will be with us to have our own institution without the Bishop, but with the same intentions.
Everyone is obviously welcome to attend this servicestat 9.30am on Sunday 31 July.
Secondly, we are very happy to welcomeMrs Susan Dury
as the new Headteacher of Ickleford Voluntary Controlled Primary Schoolin the September term, the beginning of the new school year.
Putting the words ‘Voluntary Controlled’ is by way of explanation that Ickleford Primary school was built by the Church of England in 1848, and as we all know has gone from good beginnings to great strength - for the last 17 years under the exceptional leadership of Mrs Pat Salmon, who announced her retirement in September last year. Not only do we owe a great debt of gratitude to Mrs Salmon for years of hard work and for everything she has done to help give our school the title of 'Outstanding' in the last OFSTED inspection, but also for continuing to help by introducing Mrs Dury at every opportunity, in a very welcoming manner, to the finer points of our school.
We wish bothRev'd James and his wife Barbara
and Mrs Susan Duryvery many happy years with us here in Ickleford.
The last three months has seen varying progress with many of the current Parish Council projects, as for numerous reasons we are dependent on other organisations for responses to our prompting for action, and these often take time.
However, we do have some positive news regarding 'Little Park', as the Lottery have agreed in principle a grant to part help fund the work necessary to establish the allotments, and subject to their conditions being satisfied we should then receive the funding in the next few months. The balance required is being sought from North Herts District Council by further grants and hopefully if these can be obtained, then the legal formalities involving the transfer of the land to the Parish Council can move forward, and the clearance work can proceed in the coming months.
The Hyde Mill project continues to generate enthusiasm from the group involved and following clearance of the shrubbery from the site this has allowed further investigative work to take place to indentify the actual footprint of the former mill. The Drainage Board from Bedford are providing assistance in re-routing part of the river that has broken away from its main source over time to the rear of Laurel Way, and Countryside Management Services are also offering assistance with further work that needs to be undertaken.
Hertfordshire Highways have finally provided information indicating the results of the traffic calming which appear to demonstrate that the reduction in speeds throughout the village has been achieved, and this information can be found on the Parish Website.
On the Cadwell Bridge situation we are still awaiting Highways to come back with answers to the various questions raised as a result of their initially providing various options to possibly solving the problem.
The Police will be circulating the village during May with details of a new property marking system that they are encouraging all residents to take up as a means of protecting their possessions. With the summer months fast approaching the Police are again reminding residents to protect their property by locking doors and windows when going out.
The Parish Council is entering the 'Village of the Year' competition this year, given we have various new projects now complete for the judges to see. The Annual Parish Meeting will now take place on
thThursday 26 May, the April date being moved due to the forthcoming Parish Elections, and by the time this publication is circulated a new Parish Council will have been elected. Three of the former Councillors decided for various reasons not to stand for re-election and I should like to thank James Carlyle, Glenys Palmer and Tim Stephenson for all their hard work during the time they were members of the Council.

Las Vegas Churches accept gambling chips.
This may come as a surprise to those of you not having visited Las Vegas , but there are
more Catholic churches than casinos. Not surprisingly, some worshippers at Sunday
services will give casino chips rather than cash when the basket is
passed. Since they get chips from many different casinos, the
churches have devised a method to collect the offerings. The
churches send all their collected chips to a nearby Franciscan monastery for sorting
and then the chips are taken to the casinos of origin and cashed in.
This is done by the chip monks.

2011 should prove to be an exciting season for Ickleford. The club is really thriving and there is much to look forward to.Firstly there is the new second ground at Kimpton Hoo which is a
thwonderful location. The first game took place on May 7 which was adebut victory for the third team. Then there is the challenge for the firstteam playing in the Saracens Herts League Division 2, their highest level formany years. To this end Ickleford have taken on an overseas player for thefirst time. Harsh Melita has settled in very well and is also helping the coltswith his coaching.
As far as the colts are concerned the new under 10 side has made a promising start winning their first game and this is an important step forward for the club. Another new venture for Ickleford CC is our first season in the mid beds league and many new grounds to visit.
th thProof of the strength of the club came on the weekend of the 7 /8 May when four sides were fielded on Saturday and two sides on Sunday. It is many years since Ickleford fielded six sides in a weekend.
Off the field a successful auction night was held in April to help the club's finances while once again thJas Bowman's are sponsoring the cricket balls for the season – the 26 consecutive year of this
particular sponsorship – while vice president John Binks has also provided generous support for the cricket club with Hitchin Motorcare Ltd sponsoring the colts section.

Villagers wondered what was happening on Thursday 21st April when they saw so many well dressed ladies complete with lovely hats all entering the Village Hall.
As our speaker for the evening happened to be a Registrar and the Royal Wedding was just a week away, it seemed appropriate to mark the occasion accordingly. Members enjoyed a "Wedding Tea Party" with a loyal toast to the happy couple and to the Queen as it was her birthday that day as well - a very enjoyable evening.
We have an outing arranged for August when members can visit both Clarence House and Buckingham Palace or just the former if they wish. There are all the usual events organised for the summer months - mainly involving eating, so things are as busy as ever.
We have been pleased to welcome three new members during this year.

Never Lie to a Woman ... !!!
A man called home to his wife and said,
" Dear, I have been asked to go fishing up in Scotland with my boss & several of his friends.
We'll be gone for a week. This is a good opportunity for me to get that
promotion I've been wanting, so could you please pack enough clothes for a week and
set out my rod and fishing box, we're leaving from the office & I will call by the house
to pick my things up" " Oh! and please pack my new blue silk pyjamas.”
His wife thinks this sounds a bit fishy but being the good wife she is, did exactly what her husband asked.
The following weekend he came home a little tired but otherwise looking
good. His wife welcomed him home and asked if he had caught many fish?
He said, "Yes! Lots of salmon, some grayling and a few trout.
But why didn't you pack my new blue silk pyjamas like I asked you to do?”
His wife replied, "I did. They're in your fishing box ...”

ckleford's Litter Collection Day will this year be on Saturday 25 June - the day before Open Gardens . Bearing in mind that visitors may find themselves in almost any part of the village I would Iask you to look up and down your road some time that week to judge how large the total task of
clearance on the day might be.
If in doubt do come to the Village Hall from 9 am on the Saturday with a pair of stout gloves to register for the prize draw and collect a bag. The more people who join in the easier the job will be for all.

Marie Curie - Yosemite to San Francisco Cycle Challenge
London 2012 say the Olympics are an
opportunity for all of us to take on a fresh
challenge.
So as a journalist who reports on 2012 every
day, I have decided to set myself the goal of
raising cash for Marie Curie Cancer Care with
a 400km bike ride across Yosemite National
Park to San Francisco.
We are doing this as a small group over five
days in October 2011 and there's going to be
plenty of uphill stuff. So I've bought a new
bike and started training with a couple of
friends. I'm also taking crucial cycling advice
from an experienced "Ironman" competitor.
I'd be delighted if you could support me in this
pre-Olympic challenge with any donations.
Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast
and totally secure. Your details are safe with
JustGiving – they'll never sell them on or
send unwanted emails. Here's the link:
Once you donate, they'll send your money
http://www.justgiving.com/Adrian-Warner
directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every
eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it's the most efficient way to
donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
With many thanks for your support, Adrian Warner.
Like other years I am appealing to the community for 2nd hand books. This is for our
book sale at V.R Jennings Funeral Service
that will be held on the
"Open Gardens Day,”
plus the week before,
starting on Monday 20th June,
all are welcome.
All the monies raised will go to
St Katharine's Church.
I am happy to make any local collections.
Many thanks Susannah.

Activities and Opportunitiesoffered from St. Katharine's to the community.
SUNDAYS Three Services to choose from8.00am EUCHARIST (the word Eucharist means Thanksgiving)
9.30am FAMILY SUNG EUCHARIST, generally the second Sunday in the month.
9.30am SUNG EUCHARIST (with time for children to take part in a suitable learning activity in the sound proofed room) on the other Sundays.Coffee is served on the fourth Sunday of the month after the service.
6.00pm EVENSONG at St. Katharine's.
MONDAYS 2.00pm – 3.15pm MUMS AND TOTS. A time for young Mothers/Fathers, churchgoers or non churchgoers, to meet in St. Katharine's, bringing their small children for a sociable hour.
3.30pm - 4.30pm KATS KOOL KIDS. With its usual mix of fun and Christian learning for the ages 7 - 11.
4.30pm – 5.30pm CHOIR. Currently we have fifteen children in the choir aged 7 to 16. Choir practices tend to be fun with the occasional piece of hard work – and the results are quite amazing because children nowadays are so musically talented. The results of these talents can be heard on Sunday mornings. There is only one strict rule and that is that no child may be unkind to another child in any way.
8.00pm ST. KATHARINE'S SINGERS. A time for musically inclined friends to meet and rehearse anthems and carols and generally enjoy singing in a group. The 'Singers' please us on Festivals, which would not be the same without them, and at other times when they have rehearsed suitable anthems – and also of course at Christmas at the 'Carols by Candlelight' .
THURSDAYS 9.10am. On Thursday morning we have a said Eucharist which provides about 30 minutes of time for quiet prayer and reflection as well as a celebration of Holy Communion. All are very welcome to attend.
FRIDAYS SOCIABLE SOUP LUNCHES 12 noon – 1.30pm held in the Church on the first Friday of the month. This has proved to be a time when newcomers to our village have discovered the Church and have been made to feel welcome, as well as regular friends who enjoy a really good soup, roll, drink and a chat.
REGULAR COMMITMENTS BYCHURCHGOERS AND NON CHURCHGOERS
Every week the brass in the Church is polished, the Church is tidied and cleaned and beautiful arrangements of flowers appear. One could say, 'as if by magic'! However, how wrong one would be because we have extremely dedicated and generous friends who work to rotas on the upkeep of the interior. The churchyard is mown and the paths are swept and the gutters cleared of pine needles – again by people who are willing to give of their time and energies. If you feel you would like to join in, in any way, with the activities on offer, please feel free to do so. If you don't know who to approach, please ask me!
Reverend Margaret: Telephone 01462 432794**********
Did you know that there is a weekly Newsletter in St. Katharine's which you are welcome to take, giving information of Services and Events? Did you know that there are beautiful cards and sometimes crafts for sale after the Service on the 4th Sunday in the month all at very reasonable prices?Did you know that we are the only Church in Hertfordshire which has bells that are unable to be rung?

WATER AND SANITATION CRISIS
MAKE LIFE FLOW
Imagine carrying a 20 litre jerry-can filled with water—or alternatively a bag of books which weighs roughly 20 litres.
Imagine putting it on your head and climbing up and down stairs a few times, or round the garden several times.
This is a little taste of what it is like for 900 million people who do not have access to clean water. Instead of turning on a tap they must walk to a communal tap, well or spring, fill their cans and walk back.
A staggering 40 per cent of peoplealive today lack access to basicSanitation - they have no water towash their hands after using the toilet.
The result? Three children under 5 years old die every minute.
TEARFUND have been workingin this region for 20 years.
But, to respond to this growingcrisis and save lives,
they need more resources
They have therefore launched an appeal.
WEST AFRICA FOOD CRISIS
IN WEST AFRICA, MILLIONS ARE DESPERATE FOR FOOD
Bad harvests over a number of years mean staple foods like grain have shot up in price by as much as 43%. At the same time, the value of cattle has plummeted.
Families would normally tradetheir cattle for food - but nowthey are not worth enough.
This means they have no money, and many people are eatingjust one meal a day.
So, if any reader wishes to make a donationtowards helping
TEARFUNDin their work in West Africa
then pleasesend your contribution to

and if you are able please tell Michael that you wish the Church to reclaim tax on your
donation to be sent on to Tearfund also.

Ickleford Preschool is set in the friendly village of Ickleford and consists of a Nursery and a
Playgroup offering opportunities to all. We welcome children from two years and six months
up to four years and nine months, and follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum.
We would like to give everybody a very warm welcome to preschool and hope you all had an
enjoyable Easter. Our topics this term are relationships and emotions with ourselves and
others. We will also be looking at music, movement and dance, as well as being busy in the
garden, in preparation for open gardens in June.
We are still collecting Sainsbury and Tesco vouchers. We received some wonderful
equipment last year, and this year's collection is doing well. So please do keep collecting and
sending them into preschool.
thBags 2 school is booked for collection on Monday 9 of May at 9am. They accept clothing,
paired shoes, curtains, bedding, soft teddies and handbags. For every kilo that is collected a
monetary percentage is donated back to preschool. If you have any items you would like to
donate then please drop bags off in the preschool car park, by the steps. They will also accept
large sacks and bin bags.
Finally, if you are interested in a place for your child at Ickleford Preschool and would like an
application form or to come for a visit, please contact Stephanie Woodhead via the telephone
number or email address at the top of this page.

We Live In Troubled Times
A vicar had been on a long flight between church conferences, when a warning was given to “Fasten your seat belts” because a little turbulence was expected. Then the storm broke and ominous cracks of thunder could be heard above the engine noise and the plane was tossed about on terrific currents of air.
The vicar confessed that he shared the acute fear with the other passengers, some of whom were praying, all wondering if they would make it through the storm. Suddenly the vicar noticed a little girl sitting quietly reading, sometimes dozing, but with no fear or worry and he was amazed by her calmness.
The plane landed safely and the vicar asked the little girl why she had not been afraid. She answered “Because my daddy is the pilot and he is taking me home”.
There are many kinds of storm that buffet us;physical, mental, financial, domestic
and many other storms can easily and quickly darken our skiesand throw our plane out of control.
We have all known such times. It is easier to be at rest when our feet are on the ground
than when we are being tossed about by a dark sky.
Let us remember – Our Father is the pilot.

The real Green Deal... please stand up
Is grant support for home insulation soon to be replaced by loans? The government's latest proposals
certainly imply this.
The Green Deal proposes to spread the cost of new home insulation across future energy bills associated
with a property. It is hoped that this will remove any obvious barrier to getting the work done. A guiding
principle is that insulation installed must save the householder more money than the extra charge on their
bills.
However, we don't yet know how much loan interest repayments will add to the cost. Currently cavity wall
and loft insulation cost under £100 each in some areas thanks to Council grants. The Energy Saving Trust
estimates households can save £115 each year with cavity wall insulation. This is a remarkable return on
investment.
Get insulation installed in 2011 and you'll benefit from a grant. Beyond March 2012, when energy supplier
grants are up for review, this is much less certain. So, for householders with savings, no intention of moving
home and no desire to pay interest on a loan, today's best offers arguably represent the real green deal.

In particular, no children are ever allowed to use collecting boxes in the Church’s name – for such a purpose or for any other charitable cause.

The price of gas in France
A thief in Paris planned to steal some paintings from the Louvre.
After careful planning, he got past security, stole the paintings, and made it safely to his van. However, he was captured only two blocks away when his van ran out of gas.
When asked how he could mastermind such a crime and then make such an obvious error, he replied,
“Monsieur, that is the reason I stole the paintings.’
I had no Monet
To buy Degas
To make the Van Gogh.”

GENERAL PLAN OF THE CHURCH
Entering the Church by the Porch, the visitor is advised to stand for a moment in the centre of the Nave and look around.
The Nave is the earliest part of the Church and was built about 1150. To the east is the Chancel and thSanctuary built early in the 13 century, as was also the Belfry at the west end of the Church. To the south
this the Porch which was constructed about the middle of the 15 century, and also the South Aisle and Chapel which were added in 1859 when extensive alterations were made under the direction of the well known architect of that time, Sir Gilbert Scott, as a memorial to the Ryder family.
To the north in the Chancel is the Vestry which was another part of the 1859 enlargement and improvements.
From this brief survey it is clear that the original medieval building must have been a comparatively simple structure consisting of a long aisleless Nave and a short Chancel.
thIt is doubtful whether the existing Chancel can be regarded as the 12 century one, however, because it is neither quite central with, nor exactly in line with the Nave. Indeed from other indications, particularly the
th13 century window remaining in the north wall, there is reason to suppose that the present square ended
thChancel is a 13 century re-building of an earlier one just as so many of the existing old Chancels are.
In that same century, perhaps about the same time, the Tower came to be added at the other end of the Nave. thThis must have involved the removal of the 12 century west wall, which till then may have carried its own
bell turret. The tower arch, which is two centred, and the narrow lancet pointed-headed window in the thsouth face certainly afford in their design the evidence of 13 century date.
thThe chief piece of 14 century work remaining in the Church is the three-light window in the north wall of the Nave. Doubtless it came about early in that century in response to a call for more light and more translucent colour. It may be pertinent to note that this window is on the men's side of the Nave where the Lord of the Manor would have had his place in the Church.
thThe Chancel Arch spanning the full width of the Chancel is almost certainly of the 15 century. It must of course have superseded an earlier one whose span may be taken to have been about one-third of the external width of the Nave, thus giving abutments of solid walling on either side, equal in depth to the span of the arch whose thrust they had to resist. On the foundation of these pieces of solid walling, Scott may

have set the bases of his arch – the third Chancel Arch – that the Church must have possessed in its time.
With the Chancel Arch goes the Rood Gallery, the staircase of which remains but the exit has now been blocked.
A Piscina of the Decorated Period can be seen in the north wall near to this staircase.
In the Middle Ages a small Nave Altar would have stood beneath the rood loft, corresponding no doubt to another on the south side.
thThe Nave Roof is also of the 15 century and replaces an earlier one which was of steeper pitch and was portably pushing out the walls, since it can be observed that the north wall has a considerable outward lean.
thIndeed this 15 century roof with its tie-beams may have helped along with the contemporary buttresses to save the walls from collapse. The wall posts of the roof tresses rest upon stone Corbels which form many interesting heads and figures.
In 1859 Sir Gilbert Scott replaced the south wall by three Arches of Victorian Norman design which were introduced to support the new South Aisle and the Chapel of All Souls. The pillars are of stone and are short, massive and circular, with simple decorated capitals. At the same time he added the large pointed Arch between the Nave and the Chancel which is richly carved with numerous symbols of the Christian Faith.
thThe 13 century large single window at the east end was supplanted or improved by the present window with its three narrow lancets and filled with stained glass representing Our Lord's Passion. The small lancet window which was found bricked up on the north side of the Altar was re-opened and filled with stained glass depicting the Last Supper.

Last year Ickleford lost one of its popular residents; Jon Lawson.
This year several of Jon's friends from Ickleford and further afield are organising and/or completing a number of fund raising events in his memory to support both The Lymphoma Association and Garden House Hospice. The Lymphoma Association provides information and support to anyone with lymphatic cancer and their families, carers and friends; and as a local charity we all know of Garden House Hospice and the great work that team of volunteers undertake in Letchworth.
thThe team will drive up to Fort William in Scotland on Fri 10 June for an 8:00am start on Saturday morning to climb Ben Nevis. Less than five hours later they will set off to drive down to the Lake District to begin the climb up Scafell Pike, and less than four hours after that they will set off to drive through the night to Pen-y-Pas in Wales to climb Mount Snowdon, returning to the car park less than four hours later.
Several of the people taking part have never climbed one mountain before never mind three in 24 hours, so this is a major undertaking for them but they are all really enthusiastic about thechallenge. You can read more and support theirfundraising efforts online atwww.justgiving.com/JonLawson
In September two members of this team will be takingpart in The Great North Run as a further fund raisingevent and we are also hoping to run at least one socialfund raising event but details of these are still to befinalised.
Any support you can give in the form of sponsorship will be greatly appreciated, and if you would like to help us run these, or additional, fund raising events then we would also like to hear from you on 01462 438730 or by email to [email protected]
