Icebreakers

• “Pin yourself to the map”

•Guess the Google

Overview of Tools

here are three other good free ones (nb. dimdim is also free)

•ooVoo•http://www.yugma.com/•whizIQ

And some of the more expensive tools do offer options to try out their software for small groups of users. Some of the better ones;

•Adbobe connect Pro - the best on the market in my opinion•Elluminate•Wimba live classroom (also plugs into Moodle to create a seamless link with your VLE). I attended a demo

of this the other day, and must say it's got some very good features.

Practical considerations

• Check system compatibility & test early & often (with presenters)

• Use good quality audio only if video/bandwidth is an issue

• Rate of delivery – 100 WPM – don’t cram too much in

• Keep the session focussed (about 30 min’s)

• Provide adequate support (joining instructions)

• Ensure you have a contingency plan, i.e. another platform or even a discussion forum!

Pedagogical considerations

• Allow for plenty of varied interaction, this is not a platform to broadcast. Use a podcast/vodcast if you want to just talk at delegates.

• Plenty of scaffolding (Gilly Salmon 5 stage model could help here)http://www.atimod.com/e-moderating/5stage.shtml

• Allow time to reflect (Q&A)

• Introduce peer activities

• Hand over control periodically

• Use appropriate supportive media / link to pre & post reading
