how to prepare for your first marathon
TRANSCRIPT
Too many people go into marathons with the wrong attitude. There are lots of people who have a go for fun, don\'t train, and encourage you to do the same.
Marathon\'s are great money raisers for charity, and they can be really fun, but it\'s of paramount importance that
you train for them, whether you care about your race time or not. Even taking it steady can be too much of a strain on
someone who hasn\'t trained. Amateur runners die on marathons regularly, especially in hot weather.
With the scare briefing over with, you need to know how to get into a routine that will see you through the event. There are plenty of different approaches, but basically if
you\'re running hard, long and fast most days you\'re doing it right. There\'s nothing like running for improving your aerobic fitness is a really short space of time. Try to
assign different distances and techniques to different days. So two days a week fast and short, three standard
distance, and one long distance, with a nice day off to rest.
It is all too easy to get stuck in a rut with training after you\'ve been doing it a while, and find it hard to improve your distance and speed. For this there are lots of tricks.
Running with a partner who knows what they\'re doing is a big help, so look out for running clubs. Using fartlek and
circuit training as well as you\'re standard routine will force you fitness into a higher level. Also choose
interesting running routes - there\'s nothing worse than eight hours on a treadmill each week.
You\'ll need to think about diet to get into shape for marathon running. Complex carbs are great for building up energy stores so get lots of those in the run up. It\'s also a good idea to drink a lot of water, even when you\'re not actually running, as this will generally help you run faster
and longer.
A marathon takes a serious commitment, whatever your skill level and engagement with it. So make sure you get in
as much training as you can.
